Der Rulez

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

And here, linked for your convenience, are the previous incarnations of this thread.

I recently discovered Andrew Jackson Jihad through the rate a song thread (although the person who rated it gave it a low score, funnily enough), and I'm now kind of addicted to them. Something about the singer reminds me of a slightly more manic version of John Darnielle.

...you may not continue with your regularly scheduled banter. :smalltongue:

Many forums alternate the color of posts, so it's harder to use ninja text. But we have a different ( and better, IMO ) layout, so white just vanishes into the post.
I've often wanted to write in white in between words, instead of using spaces, but it's never come up.

I'm the exact opposite. I do spend too much time on the computer, and my grades fall because of it. Having someone restrict my time would probably be better for my grades. However, if that were the default and I made a bet that if I fail anything I have restricted computer time, my grades would still fall. There's a lot of room for a mediocre student to fall before they actually fail.

It's mid-November in central New York.

We're not supposed to be this warm in mid-November Central New York.

You know how the weather is in certain places. In Milwaukee, for example, you might get one nice day followed by eight days or was it weeks of snow.

The same might apply for New York, only without as much snow.

So, here's what I just emailed my writing professor.

Oh dearest professor, I fear I bring you bad news

I mean no offence, and I know it’ll leave my grade slightly bruised

You see, for the past four days I’ve been disgustingly sick

And take my word, it’s not that I’m lovesick

The computer screen makes my head want to explode

I have a scratchy throat, and there’s a funny feeling in my nose

I’m writing this now with my screen dimmed all the way down

And cotton in my ears to block out my little brothers’ sounds

Right now I just don’t think I can finish that essay

I even opened up the document, but my brain wouldn’t cooperate

I was writing about linguistics, my mother’s favourite field

And I think I managed to not go off on some weird spiel

I loved the subject, I had lots more that I wanted to say

And I may do so for myself, just on a later date

But I’ve spent all of today either asleep or reading Poe

It’s the 200th anniversary of his birth this year, you know

And MWA* put out this great anthology

I snatched a week ago when I was at the library

Maybe it’s just my slight fever, but I don’t find him scary this time around

Even though at twelve, he made me jump at every little sound...

...Where was I?

Oh, yes.

I’m sorry for the lack of essay this time around

Please don’t judge me too harshly, (though I know you’re contractually bound)

But hey, here’s something you won’t have to deal with tonight

And that’s my comma abuse problem, which I hear is quite a fright

So with that thought, good professor, I leave you to rest

And hope I don’t puke in class tomorrow, since that would make a mess

*Mystery Writers of America

I'm lucky though, he drops our lowest 2 grades, so it's not that big a deal. But this prof's got a good sense of humour, I hope it'll make him laugh.:smalltongue:

Bah. I still have to write my modern lit response paper (not a real essay, just a short unpolished piece of writing discussing basically whatever we want). I'm talking about the executed Irish Republicans in Yeats' Easter 1916 being "reborn" as they are memorialized.

This is kind of odd to read actually.
I currently live with PhoeKun and I used to live with Midnight Son... 2 months ago. And I stayed a couple days at Alarra and Zebs only 3 months ago.
I've also been talking with FdL a bit more lately.

I'm living on the opposite side of the playground nowadays. :smallconfused:

That is a bit odd. Even the people who decamped post--what-was-that-site-called--migration* liked to stay in touch with slightly more personal media than the Playground and its measure of anonymity. 'Course, that does leave the remainder to wonder. . .

(steps out, applies more deodorant, returns)

'Tis not all bad though. Look at this page and how many well-met people here are new.

Fredthefighter arrived, rose, and left again during your hiatus. CurlyKitGirl has nearly disappeared under the demands of Oxford (yes, she's now fulfilling her destiny). RabbitHoleLost has acquired an offline life and, while she posts at the same rate while here, those are now special occasions instead of daily. Jibar is here now, just coming off of a hiatus, possibly to detox from all things Internet. PhoeKun returned, sulked, and left. Ego Slayer stormed off and FdL faded away. Alarra's busy with life but I'll let Zeb the Troll tell you the details. Midnight Son rode off into the sunset, and we lately found out that fire he drove towards was actually phoenixinoehp. Brickwall was banned. . .

That should mostly cover it.

Funnily enough I've been here and watched most these people rise in popularity and leave.
I never really left, instead migrating to Gaming (Other Games) for quite a while and hanging in the Steam thread making sporadic visits elsewhere. Me and Random Banter have an odd history.
I still talk to Ego, and the reasons she left still make me sad. I missed PhoeKun's brief reappearence (tell us how she is SweetRein!). I know Alarra is doing well, and her and Zeb seem happy together. Midnight Son never did update us on how his trip was going. Very happy for Curly considering it's everything she wanted. I never saw Fred leave, must've been when I was out of Friendly Banter. I know what's going on with Rabbit and she seems happy. Never did find out what happened to Brickwall.
And now where are Charity, Bosssmiley and Rawhide? Haven't seen them post for ages.

...I feel remarkably old for someone younger than that list of people.

PhoeKun is doing well, of course. Other than having a little bit of shared "cabin fever" due to being unable to get out (we lost our debit card on a bank account, which we need to pay for gas, it's being replaced soon). Mostly, playing console games it seems.

MidnightSon got his apartment, as he informed me not that long ago via phone. I do not know further than this.

Ah, but this is the thing. The reasons still stand, though I'm not going to divulge them. I feel absolutely no desire to go. I feel a lot of desire not to go. I have absolutely no reason to go other than to spare the feelings of my ex-girlfriend, who to be frank I should feel no obligation towards when it comes to making her not feel bad.

But, I'm going, because I can't stand a girl's tears. Goddammit.

God, this is what it feels like to finally drop off the deep end isn't this? This is insanity.

My internet is several broken right now. I just cannot use the web, and because I had this site open in a tab before the web fell down I can still use it, though external sources like avatars stored on photobucket won't work.
I try and tell my housemates something is wrong and they say they have no problems whatsoever. Because they're playing online games which is somehow still allowed. They say it's my computer. No. No it isn't.
I have done everything possible to fix this, and my computer savvy friends have no clue whatsoever about what could possibly be wrong. By all rights either nothing should work or everything should. I shouldn't be down on the web but still able to use Steam.
If I call my landlord and tell what's wrong since the internet connection is down in his name and what not, he'll call everyone else to ask them if they have any problems and they'll say no and then he'll ask me if it's my problem and I'll be right back at the start.
It's just insane.

I have mastered the fine arts of laziness and procrastination.

Some of you know I was gone for a week to Florida and as a result of the school I missed I now have a flood of homework that needs doing. At the beginning of this weekend I told myself I was going to get most, if not all, of it done even if it killed me. What I failed to remember was that I had recently come in to possession of two new and awesomely amazing video games, Dragon Age and Borderlands. It hit me the moment I entered my house, it was as inevitable as gravity pulling a thrown object to the ground, it was The Pull, I had to play them. Friday night I played Dragon Age until one in the morning at which time I was reluctantly forced to sleep due to the intervention of my parents. The next morning I awoke at nine and The Pull took hold of me immediately. I continued to play Dragon Age until my parents badgering to get to work on my homework became unbearable. I retreated to the basement with every intention of doing my homework, but I came across my brothers playing Borderlands and The Pull took hold of me once again. I decided that I would play for a little while just to try it, but I should have known that The Pull leaves no room for decision, only compulsion. Before I knew it the clock had struck midnight and once again my parents intervention forced me to sleep. On Sunday morning The Pull called to me with the call of a siren but there was no time for gaming, I had to go to church. Over those few hours The Pull grew and grew until it became unbearable. Upon arriving home I immediately rushed for the X Box and took up Borderlands. It was indescribable the relief I felt when I felt the controller in my hands and saw the flashing lights of the game, The Pull had been sated. Once again I played late, although it evoked the rage of my parents, and once again my homework lay forgotten. Now I sit here typing this and the pile of homework continues to grow, but something else is growing, something eternally hungry, The Pull.

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is the first installment of downloadable content for Borderlands. The content will include new quests, items, and enemies. The storyline takes place in an area known as Jakobs Cove. Dr. Ned had been in charge of keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, but ended up transforming them into abominations. The player will assist Dr. Ned in trying to cure the victims of his work. The installment will be released for the 360 and PS3 versions on November 24, 2009.

You too? Man, I get that one all the time. :/ I get the feeling that some professors like to get things generalized for them and prefer things to be analyzed, rather than reported. The problem there is that a good analysis requires a through report, and sometimes they aren't entirely clear on whether they want more of a report on the subject, or an analysis of the content. :smallannoyed: This is why when I peer review, I always try to have something to say about every section of a person's paper. Eggy is still about, just a bit busy I think, he's always posted more in the Gaming subsection (which I don't really frequent) than anywhere else I think. Rawhide's just Rawhidin' HAWHAWHAW. heh. >_>

Almighty Salmon disappeared off to FFPR and I lost track of him, as did Kaelaroth, the dastards! Abandoning me like that! They're just so self-centred! :P

I left once. It didn't work out, partially due to Curly pesterin' me, partially cos I was bored.

Ugh, I have the "Total lack of constructive criticism" problem as well. I swapped my creative writing piece with a freind today, and she basically made no changes, whereas I covered hers in pen suggesting corrections etc.

Sometimes it just sucks to be good at stuff, I guess? At least I'm keeping up with the coursework despite the "Basically any deadlines for you are out of the window considering the home situation" exenuating circumstances.

Cobra: TOR (https://www.torproject.org/) will get around a lot of filters. I use it all the time. It slows things down, but better than nothing.

So I just got back from school, where I managed to avoid a fight. Probably a good thing, considering I'm sick and my hand's already busted up. Even so, it's annoying how confrontational people can be about their own mistakes.

See, I don't want to stomp on your teacher too much *Or DR's teacher, as it were*, but that sounds suspiciously like being lazy. "Oh, she's describing so much, but I can't be bothered to read all of it. I'll just summarize and say she needs to evaluate things a bit more".

I'm sure it's more complex than that though. ^^; Maybe they were looking for a deeper analysis on each individual covenant, rather than a summary of them as a whole?

The point is to analyze the text, but my "summary" was more of a reinterpretation - "hey look, people, there are parallels between these three covenants". I suppose it was less analytical than she likes - and she DID say that she wanted more analysis than description - but the line between the two is very, very fine, particularly in this case.

I think, at least for my peers, the fact that I write well and persuasively (I'm not tooting my own horn here, just that's always the comment I get back from them) covers up flaws in my actual treatment of the text. Which kind of leaves me stranded on things like argument v. summary.

I find that a good analysis, at least if you want it to look like one, always compares the "good" and "bad" aspects of whatever subject you're studying at the time...which is a profoundly stupid way to analyze anything, because it requires us to attribute positive and negative values to past events, when such values are merely subjective. Drawing a parallel between them seems like a better option. Though maybe you didn't include enough contrast between them? *Teachers are always looking for how things are different from one another, as well as how they are the same*.

Theodore Roosevelt was part of the Rough Riders, the first volunteer cavalry division in the United States. He led the charge up San Juan Hill. On that day, the cavalry division was without their horses. He led the charge anyway.

If you really want to read about manly presidents, this is the article to do it. (http://www.cracked.com/article_15895_5-most-badass-presidents-all-time.html) Though honestly, they don't do George Washington proper justice in just how awesome he was.

Theodore, on the other hand...well, this is what they have to say about him:

"Roosevelt received letters from army cavalrymen complaining about having to ride 25 miles a day for training and, in response, Teddy rode horseback for 100 miles, from sunrise to sunset, at 51 years old, effectively rescinding anyone's right to complain about anything, ever again. "

Swimming does tend to burn a lot of calories, prolly your body telling you that you did a good job. *nods*

I might've gotten into swimming if our school was not in central New York. D: Very hard to form a swim team with no body of warm water nearby and no budget for an indoor pool.

Finally, FINALLY done with the Moby **** unit. I had the test earlier today.

This week is brimming with all sorts of work for me. Preparations for the con is most of it, plus I have two more tests this week. I completed my Philosophy essay almost a week early just so I had one less thing to do this week.

Luckily, this will all pay off this weekend with Daisho Con. One of my favorite voice actors is going to be a guest.

I know the context for this is something completely different, but so help me, I can't not picture a cobra with shining glasses and inexplicable arms with gloved hands intertwined right under his snout.

I've never even seen NGE.

I believe it's the power supply, because there was an outage last night, and I suspect the subsequent power surge fried it all to hell. Needless to say, I am rather annoyed.

CurlyKitGirl has nearly disappeared under the demands of Oxford (yes, she's now fulfilling her destiny).

:smallfrown:
I miss here too, but Curly has been doing some discovering.
Eight week terms are really intense. Plus weekly essays.

Curly's schedule from last Saturday 'til this Saturday:

Sat morn and afternoon: Putting up posters and busking to raise publicity for The Mikado.
Sun: Finish reading primary and secondary reading for essay.
Mon: Two lectures, reading and more research. Eve: Choir rehearsal.
Tue: Lecture, more reading. Evening: Rehearsal for The Mikado. FINISH ESSAY
Wed: Tutorial, class, get next essay topic, do reading for it. Club debate in evening.
Thurs: G&S elections and unofficial rehearsal. Also, sectional rehearsal for choir.
Fri: Lecture, copy up notes, more reading; another club.
Sat: Full runthrough of Mikado.
And if you think that's crazy, next week's schedule is as follows (skipping out all mentioned above):
Sun: FINISH ESSAY. CHoir rehearsal with soloists.
Mon: Normal choir rehearsal, plus the usual.
Tues: Hand in essay, enjoy one day of nothing; excepting what's listed above. Oh, except the Mikado dress rehearsal.
Wed: First night of Mikado; plus everything lse listed for Wed above.
Thur: Second Mikado, plus everything else.
Fri: Third Mikado, plus everything else.
Sat: Afternoon: complete runthrough of Petite Messe. Evening:Last Mikado, plus everything else.

I still have an essay to do that week as well.
So pretty intense, but I still manage to lurk here, if not post.

Now for some reactions:
Wait, what. Charity's a teacher? A math teacher? Buh. Whu'?
Reina's back! *glomp hugs*

@Bath: You were missed dreadfully, and I'm glad you came back.

I miss Skippy. Does anyone else miss him?

Also; when did Fred leave?

@Jibbers: *hugs* Losing the internet can be really sucky.

Back to the essay. Wee. But it should be easy to do. And has to be done by seven so I can go to rehearsal.

. . .

Essay crisis! (I jest, I've had far worse problems than that. Such as a 2 500 - 3 500 word essay that was at 1 300 words at midnight when the essay was due in by half past eleven that morning.)
Nonetheless: Minor Essay Crisis! And they're fun too.

We do one a term. Last summer they even performed at the international G&S festival. It was Utopia Ltd., we got shown the DVD and it was really good. The play was a wee bit sucky, but they were good. Especially as they were the youngest amateur group there.
It'd be nice if you could come along, you can order your tickets by email (PM if you want it?), but if you can't, there's always Ruddigore next term, or any term after that.

Holy crap thats a crazy two weeks. I can't say I envy you.

You should. It seems like a lot, and it is, but we (at least, most Arts students (I pity the Mathematicians and Scientists with their crazy schedule of multiple lectures a day, labs and stupidly large amounts of problem sheets)) still have enough time for fun and parties and clubs and stuff.

EDIT:
And while this is going to be a crazy two weeks, it's only because both my shows (choir and G&S) are coming close to doing their productions, some weeks are downright lazy.

I withdraw my previous statement then.

I was actually coaxed out to a club last week. My first time at a club, I was quite excited as I was with friends and it was a cheap entry night.
When we got there it would have taken three-quarters of an hour to get to the front of the queue. And it was raining on and off rather heavily.

I went home. As did most of my friends actually, but they had a major panic when they realised I wasn't with them (I'd stayed back to talk to a friend willing to wait) even though I'd told Waiting Friend what I was doing and asked her to tell the others what I was doing.
Waiting Friend got in a lot of trouble for making them worry.

So ends my abortive Attempt At Being An 'Ordinary University Student'.

We only do one actual G&S show a year, in late february, and then something smaller for a summer show (Last few years they've been things our director wrote, using songs from G&S and similar shows, but changing the words).
It would be nice, but I remembered what I'm doing that night - going to see the Gosforth G&S society here. I could go a different night, but

Yeah, her reasoning behind wanting them (besides being pretty awesome) is that there was a production (or film?) in c. 1992 that had them and she loved it.
I don't know for certain if they'll have them just yet, but we should find out on Saturday.
Hope you do come, but like I said, there's always another production next term.

I might come up and see your Pinafore then, late February should be easy to manage, middle of term, just a day or so. I'll definitely think about it.

I ran out of bread today. And biscuits. Yet I have sandwich meat, butter and jam. This upsets me as it means do sweet course.
So for dinner I made do with one of those packets of instant noodles, you know the kind where just put them in a saucepan and heat up the water 'til done, but in my room.
Armed with a kettle, a bowl and a fork. It works really well, sure the noodle don't take on as much flavour, but there's still the water and treating it as soup made for an excellent dinner.

The most difficult part of writing is always convincing myself to actually do it rather than staying on the internet. And then the first few sentences. Once you get going it flows.
