The Doctor (Doctor Who) would be really fun to play. Time Traveler who somehow can get through any situation on the seat of his pants.
Harry Dresden (the Dresden Files) would also be fun to play. Modern day wizard-detective.
Sanjuro Tsubaki (Yojimbo) traveling super-samurai/sword for hire.
Or the Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood, A Handful of Dollars, the Good the Bad, and the Ugly) see above but with a gun.
Conan (book version) I mean come on, he rocked.
The Gray Mouser another character people have been imitating for years.
Turjan (the Dying Earth) the original Vancian caster, he could create life itself.

The Joker would be the best to play as... lethal yet non lethal and can pull stuff out of nowhere just as good as batman

oh come on who doesn;t want a gun that shoots a giant boxing glove or a gun that when you shoot it a flag comes out that says bang!

Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly (although really all the main firefly characters would be fun)

Bester from Babylon 5

Rico from Starship Troopers (NOVEL, not movie!)

Phillip Fry from Futurama (delivery boy is an awesome career in the 31st century)

Rorcharch from Watchmen

Xelloss from Slayers Next (Polymorphed) Greater demon hanging around an adventuring party occassionally lending a hand but usually just enjoying the chaos that spreads in the PC group's wake. Assigned this duty by a demonic god because the party sorceress discovered a spell that can summon the overdeity of the demonic pantheon to the material plane.

Anyone form Lupin III

Vimes is pretty awesome, agreed.

Other options, though?

Well, being Captain is always nice.

Mal Reynolds or the Nextwave member.

(Heck, any Nextwave member. Aaron Stack would be very fun.)

Phineas Flynn, from Phineas and Ferb. Great intelligence, random mechanical stuff that can be built in day... He must have 20,000 ranks in craft.

Phineas Fogg, from Around the World in 80 Days. See above, but slightly changed.

Bloody hell, amazing statement. Couldn't agree more.

I'd love to see Rincewind as a PC. Luggage as his familiar.

Item familiar as it is meant to be?

I would have fun as Dexter (tv show, never read the books) in a mortal only WW type game or NPC class only for D&D.

A doll from Dollhouse could be amusing.

Lancre Witches would be fun as well, but you would need 3 players. No more, no less XD

Susan from Prachett would be good (can't remember her last name)

Susan's last name (well, technically her title) is Sto Helit.

Books kick the show's ass. Although the show is amazing.

And Roland Deschain would be pretty awesome.

I was planning on picking em up. However I was sadden to be told supernatural elements started popping up as of book 3.

Also I would like to add the blades could be fun from The Kings Blades (http://www.amazon.com/Gilded-Chain-Tale-Kings-Blades/dp/0380791269)

I've actually not read book 3.

Let's toss Grand Admiral Thrawn into the mix, shall we? (Star Wars novels)

I'd like to vote for all three main Mistborn characters from the Mistborn trilogy: Kelsier, Vin, and Elend. And as long as we've gotten that far, how about TenSoon? And Breeze, one of the best social-rogue type characters I know. And Ham.

And of course that leads me to think of other Brandon Sanderson books. Denth and Tonk Farr (sp?) would be great fun in the right kind of party. Galadon is perfect for any party that needs a grumpy geezer. Uncle Kiin in his glory-pirate days, maybe?

I once played a character based on the Tom Sawyer character from the League of Extraordinary Gentleman. (fighter/rogue, high CHA, dual hand crossbows w/ rapid reload)

To play along, another guy played an Alan Quartermain. (old, ornery, heavy crossbow, always a woman-hating witty comeback ready)

Seconded on Chev Chelios

Also:

Lawrence Talbot (obviously)
Philip Marlowe
Mad Martigan
Green Suit (massive props to anyone who knows the character)

PS: I couldn't help but notice people mentioned Constantine, Hellboy, Bond, Batman, and Rorshach... so this seems like a perfect time to plug my badly in need of PEACH homebrew (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129650) for 4E, the Private Eye, which has either build options, paragon paths, and/or epic destinies designed specifically to let you be exactly those people :P

Anton Gorodetsky/Gesser/Tiger Cub/Zabulon/anyone else from Nightwatch (movies or books) they're all amazing characters.

Sir Didymus from Labyrinth (I've actually played this one as a goblin lancer build)

Finch from the novel of the same name (reading it now. amazing)

Riddley from Riddley Walker (12 year old ranger/barbarian who's "dog friendy")

Will Graham from Red Dragon. (factotum anyone?)

That's the thing, he's not a classic "stick up the ass" Lawful Stupid Paladin Wannabe.... but he still believes in the importance of law, in the continued functioning of society, and in doing the right thing even if it's tough.

I agree with ^. Nothing defines LG to me more than Lord Samuel Vimes, Commander of the City Watch, Defender of thee Kings Piece.

As for suggestions, any character from anything done by Alan Moore.

Spider Jerusalem would be fun...

That would be awesome, chaotic neutral/good as it's supposed to be. A crazy bard that brings down kings with his scathing songs while snorting all manners of magical drugs. Is there a bard spell that mimics a bowel disruptor?

Lockso, the Warlock clown.
Needless to say, he does liquid pain, li-li-li-li-yeah..../powerslide.

Vampires from 30 days of night are obviously unarmed sword-sage vampire lords.

John "Jigsaw" Kramer, has to be a trapmaster.

A friend of mine has what he calls his "Han Solo" build. It's a fighter/rogue, heavy on the DEX, wielding gnomish dart thrusters.

He has a really high initiative, of course.

My opinion of the PotC movie (the first, at least) is that it was being run as a solo-campaign with a DM and player with a flair for improvisation.

Shortly into the campaign, a second player joins, and takes over the nearest character available, hence the reason Will suddenly switches sides.

All the convoluted dealing makes a whole lot more sense when you think of it as a player trying to bluff his way past the DM without remembering the exact details of the deals he's already made, as well.

Quite a bit of awesomeness inherent in the movie, when you think about it that way.

any of the main or secondary characters in gurran lagaan since they seem to all have a new crowning moment of awesome every episode...

heck i'm almost done with my gurran lagaan build, but i just need to find a way to make a warforged fuse with other constructs and take them over... can anyone find out how to make a warforged a chaotic evil outsider?

But I can't help but think that half of those stunts would fail spectacularily if someone just took a step to the side.

But they don't for a simple reason. They're too shocked to move.

Typical henchman thought process:

"Heh. Guy wants me to give him his elephant back? Nutjob."

"HOLY @#%^, DID HE JUST DO THAT?!"

"OW, MY FACE!"

In that order, but much quicker.

That's the thing, he's not a classic "stick up the ass" Lawful Stupid Paladin Wannabe.... but he still believes in the importance of law, in the continued functioning of society, and in doing the right thing even if it's tough.

Bonus points for having a henchman (guy in his command, anyway) who is a Lawful Stupid Paladin and gets away with it. Much dm fiat is needed to keep those charisma/diplomancy/bluff checks working, so don't expect this to carry over.
