My psionic powers revision (http://www.sendspace.com/file/gwjqj4) has time dilation that lets you use your Int score as your Dex score while you concentrate (but only if that's your manifesting ability score). Not exactly an official source, though.

ah, thanks. i wasn't aware of the lurk ability.

as far as i am aware though, factotum doesn't work. initiative is an initiative roll, not a dex roll, or a dex-based skill roll.

cool, but i want it *in addition to* dex. yeah, i'm being picky. thanks for the link though; there are some interesting things in there...

Thou art definitively wrong.

Initiative Checks

At the start of a battle, each combatant makes an initiative check. An initiative check is a Dexterity check. Each character applies his or her Dexterity modifier to the roll. Characters act in order, counting down from highest result to lowest. In every round that follows, the characters act in the same order (unless a character takes an action that results in his or her initiative changing; see Special Initiative Actions).

Kinda cut-and-dried right there. No real room for interpretation.

yeah, i just went onto the srd to check. that's what i get for talking before checking the source.

thanks guys.

also, i completely missed tyckspoon's response the first time through. good advice.

funny thing is that my npc already has factotum levels, and thusly, brains over brawns; but i was still under my disillusion concerning the status of an initiative roll as a dex check.

anyway, thanks all.

Swiftblades (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070327) add their casting stat to Initiative at level 4, though that's not likely a class you'd take just for that.

Factotum can enter Swiftblade, and lose little for it.
