Earlier someone had asked about the origin and power sources of Warforged and I jokingly replied something about Gnomes creating Battle Mechs with them inside. Well... I was wondering if it was actually possible to do in 3.5.

How would one go about creating a Large Effigy Humanoid creature in which they could climb inside and attack with? I've never used the Effigy Master before but I always thought I would at one point give it a chance since it was like the Pet Monster Trainer from BESM, at least to me anyway. But then I wrote that joke and BAM! I thought well why wouldn't it be possible.

So the Effigy Master, what is the lowest level I would have to be in order to take the class?

Could I simply dip into Wizard from a Gish combo and still qualify since I require Simulacrum to be on my list, though I don't need to know how to cast it?

Since I'm planning on a Gish combo (Say Duskblade or Favored Soul/Ordained Champ = idea here is to channel spells into the weapons of the mech) and I'm inside the Mech could I use my own BAB or do I have to use the Mechs?

I've never used this class before or heard of anyone ever using it so I'm not fully sure how the creation of the Effigy even goes.

BtW, what do you guys think of the idea?

Anyone got any ideas on this at all?

You don't have to dip into the ffigy class, you could just take craft contruct feat, although that may not be worth it. As for being inside the effigy, I'd rule it could be hollowed out and loses 25% of its health as a result but can now hold a creature one or more size catogories smaller.

I've not dealt with Effigy Masters before, but I feel it's worth mentioning that gnomes and suits of armor aren't exactly unheard of (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/cw/20070212a).

Yeah, an Effigy isn't the best way to go about this, because an Effigy is an autonomous creature. Actually, there really isn't a good way to go about it, unless you can find some rules specifically for battle-armor.

If you're just looking to make an Effigy, the lowest level you need to enter the class is Wizard 7, as you need 10 ranks in several skills. Thus, you can start crafting Effigies at Wizard 7/Effigy Master 1. You can apply it up to 8 HD creatures at that point, so you just need to find an appropriate monster. Megaraptor (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/dinosaur.htm#megaraptor) and Dire Lion (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/direLion.htm) come to mind, with Behir (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/behir.htm) and Bulette (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/bulette.htm) becoming available one level later. (Although a Wizard 7/Effigy Master 2 can craft up to 10 HD)

I don't see how it couldn't work though since I'm not actually wearing the mech. Its controlled by simply speaking to it. It holds its own weight and moves on its own. All I'm doing is, if it were the Dire Lion riding on its back, but instead I've simply created a harness on the inside of it.

At worst I could create the Effigy at the cost of a size Huge but since I'm inside it have its HD and Damage dealt at size Large if the DM doesn't like the idea.

To create a robot to ride around inside you'd likely need some sort of combination of Craft Wondrous Item, animate objects, continual flame and some ranks in Knowledge (architecture and engineering) (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/WondrousItems.htm#apparatusoftheCrab).

Just a hunch. :smallwink:

(Alternatively, carve a statue with a seat inside that you can climb into and cast animate objects on it. Done.)

(If you want to be really cool, make it permanent and cast awaken construct.)
