Just started a PBP game of D&D (4E, though it has little bearing on this conversation). One of my players is big on RP and asked me "Where might I find a listing of D&D songs to sing?" for when the situation calls for some singing outside of combat/rituals. I had to admit I didn't know.

So, any ideas on what bards sings exactly, or should I suggest that she just fudge it?

Look at gaelic folk music for starters.

I recommend telling him to just have a large music library and play any song that fits when he activates a bard song, anachronism be damned. Dragonforce for boss fights, etc.

That should do nicely. I personally recommend March of Cambreadth.

I like this scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USCXA_BkRdA) for boss fight music. :smallamused: But yes, this is a good suggestion.

Also, whenever something mind-numbingly stupid happens, play some Benny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnHmskwqCCQ&feature=related).

Half the fun of playing a bard is reflavoring modern songs and oldies to fit your setting. One of my most popular characters was a bard in a desert who has Queen's "Fat Bottom Girls" and NIN's "Perfect Drug" on his tavern song list.

The Rain it Raineth Everyday (http://www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/ben_kingsley/the_rain_it_raineth_every_day-lyrics-904730.html) strikes me as a good one for a Bard to sing.

The sound is a little funny here but the song is mostly in-tact: The Bard's Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_tORtmKIjE) (which also happens to be about bards songs :smallcool:) by Blind Guardian.

EDIT: Should probably have posted lyrics too (http://www.lyricsdownload.com/blind-guardian-the-bard-s-song-in-the-forest-lyrics.html).

Don't You Know you never split the party
Cleric in the middle to keep the fighters hale and hardy
Wizard in the back, where he can shed some LIGHT
and never let the damn thief out of sight.

I'm too lazy too look up the other verses, but he needs to sing this song.

i suggest doing it Elan-style:
Fight fight fight! Fight the evil bad guy!

i assume it would become hilarious when trying to buff a move silently check

Thank you, all, for the songs. I was a fan of Heather already-- play the March often-- and was steering the player in that direction, as well as in the direction of Battlelore (which was refused, alas).

You, sir, win the thread.

EDIT: The person who requests the songs seconds the motion. Most heartily seconds.

Make sure he uses the Mermaid Ancient Lyrics for his Song of Sleep

La-li ho la-li ho, la-li la-li la-li ho
La-li ho la-li ho, la-li la-li la-li ho...

If you can find it, the AD&D Bard's Handbook has a few songs as well as a lot of rp stuff.

Don't have any suggestions myself, but if the bard ever needs just music without lyrics, there's probably some stuff from Tohou Project that'd work.

For more humorous moments and maybe to introduce a bit of recursion into the game, try the one in my sig.

From an old Mad Magazine,

"We're off to kill the bad guys, and blow them out of the sky!
If we should miss then you can kiss all of our friends back there goodbye!
But you can be certain we'll kill the foe by striking the blow that lays them low,
Because because because I know! There's only one way to end this show!"

Well, from I believe it was Elfshadow:

"Ohhhh they're hardly sated after a raid,
Those men from Zenthil Keep.
They kill off all the women
for they much prefer the sheep.
But they never eat their ill gotten gains,
not a single one's a glutton,
Isn't it a marvel that they always smell of mutton?"

Can't believe 20 years later and I still remember that.

"We've come to mourn the paladin,
The best and noblest sort of man.
His way was clear, his will was strong,
But he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong!

Alone he faced the orcish hoarde,
And, dauntless, drew his mighty sword.
He did not flinch, he did not blink,
He surely did not stop and think!

The halls of Tempus opened wide;
Our paladin was led inside.
He shares with all his noble creed,
And frowns on wenching, feasts, and mead.

We cannot mourn this hero's death,
Though of his strength we are bereft.
If you must weep, weep for the god
Who now endures this tiresome sod!"

(From Silver Shadows. Ahh, Danilo Thann.)

Any of Zeppelin's folkier songs
"Over the Hills and Far Away"
"Bron Yr Aur"
"Bron Yr Aur Stomp", while we're at it
"Hey Hey What Can I Do?"
"Battle of Evermore"
"Ramble On"
and so on. I'd list more, but thanks to itunes I don't have my whole collection at my fingertips, and I'm not about to go through my cd collection to double check. Personally I prefer their heavier songs, but these are still awesome.
Almost forgot:
"Stairway to Heaven (duh)"
"Going to California"
"Tangerine"
"Gallows Pole"

Also, you probably mean traditional minstrel type bard with some sort of stringed instrument, probably in a european setting. I'ma think outside the box here though.

Bard with bongo drums:
Anything by Babatunde Olatunji
Anything by The Last Poets

Bard with guitar:
Anything by Django Reinhardt or Oscar Aleman
Any flamenco too. Check out Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Bard with bass:
Jaco Pastorius
Les Claypool

Too many people use stringed instruments. Drummers appear to be in short supply, despite the simplicity of crafting a drum over a stringed instrument.

Also, has anyone ever tried an all-bard party? like Josie and the Pussycats, except in DnD?
