Hey, so I'm a knife collector and I wanted to get my dad a knife to replace the one he lost. Money's not really an issue (not to say it's no object, roughly $80 or less) and I've always been partial to Columbia River as I own several of those knives and they've always held up incredibly, mostly my current everyday knife which I've carried for about 5 years and put it through hell (not to mention saving my life multiple times, though not through fighting:smallsmile:).

I looking at the Tuition (http://www.crkt.com/Tuition), or the Graham Razel (http://www.crkt.com/Graham). Both of which look pretty good, I'm leaning heavily towards the Razel but I'm also thinking about the Mini-Griptillian (http://www.benchmade.com/products/555) which I haven't owned but I've only heard good things about.

It's going to be primarily Everyday Carry and he pretty much carries it on him everyday so I want to make sure it's important to have it be not too big (I know people have many definitions of big but I find aprox. 3" is good for EDC).

Well, you seem to know more about knives than I do. I always prefer to carry something with a useful point, which is a mark against the Razel, but that depends on your dad's preferences. The Tuition with partial serrations would probably be the most versatile, so it's the one I'd be inclined towards.

Personally I've always preferred the Tuition.

I could find you something better in that price range. I won't say more, since I'm a knife salesman for a particular brand, and may be a bit biased.

Personally, I love Tanto blades. I've been carrying knives for 16 years now, and got a SOG Trident Tanto (http://sogknives.com/store/TF-7.html) a year ago. It is by far the best blade type I've ever used, although I wish it was closer to a true tanto blade.

It may be a little out of your price range, though.
Considering the company you like, I'm thinking the Black KISS (http://www.crkt.com/KISSK) They also have a silver version if you like Silver KISS (http://www.crkt.com/KISS).

Just my 2 cents, from a guy whose work requires him to carry a knife and use it often.

I'd go with the Mini-Griptillian, simply because it has considerably better steel than the other two. It's also the only one of the three that I've actually held, and it did feel nice in my hand. In addition, you can get it with partial serrations if your dad would like that.

Personally, I'm a fan of Spyderco (http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/list.php?genre=knife&per_page=291) knives as well. Some people don't like the look of them, but there are enough models that you'll most likely find something that you like. Also, keep in mind that the prices on the Spyderco website are a bit higher than what you'll find in a good online store, like New Graham Knives (http://newgraham.com/store/).

why not get him a Victorinox swiss army knife, it's got a blade about only 2" but it has a shorter one, aswell as multiple other things including tweezers and snippers, good for getting out splinters and it sharpens easy on an oil stone or a grinder
P.S. do you have a bowie knife? awsome blades on them i got one, so cool!

I really like Kershaw knives. I have this one (kershaw leet (http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=3&brand=kershaw)) that has held up really good. It has smooth (and quick) opening action, a safety catch, and it is really light weight.

Whatever knife you go with just remember to think of exactly the knife that he would want. It can be hard buying something so personal for a person. You want it large enough to be useful but small enough to be able to be carried easily.

That's not a knife. This is a knife!

I'll second Crimson77's suggestion. I've had a very nice Kershaw (http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=61&brand=kershaw) as an EDC for years now and loved it. It's gotten admiring comments from electricians (I cut through wire with it) and police officers (I checked it in when I went to the city courthouse); it has two methods of assisted opening; the safety lock good; and it's designed to be usable one handed by righties or lefties.

ETA: plus, it is comfortably slim. I carry it in my back pocket and rarely if ever noticed that it's there, although I certainly know when it's not!

I would also comment that it is the only knife that i have ever been able to open and close with a single hand very easily.
