My first attack of the game and I land a crit on a mounted charge. That's a whopping 261 damage there... I can't believe it!

Edit: and then the DM had to spoil the fun.

Move along, nothing to see here.

On a successful attack for that much damage, I would have just said:
"You slam your lance so hard and fast into the Ogre that it explodes. Make a Reflex Save."

What was the dm's justification/reasoning?

Aren't you supposed to roll more damage dice for a crit, not multiply the one roll you made?

What am I missing here?

The ogre zombie is undead, and thus, immune to critical hits. Still, BooNL, that was a good solid hit. Well needed too, as it looks like your team is getting cut to pieces.:smalleek:

I'm not clear on how you got to 261 from what you posted there, if you had crit.

I think he misapplied what gets multiplied in a critical. He multiplied the 29 total damage by 3 for a spirited charge with a lance, then *3 again for crit.

I had a twig blight (minor monster) roll a triple 20 roll on the NPC cleric just as the party was in need of major healing during the boss battle. As it turned out, the Druid who was a few levels above the players presented less of a challenege then the minons. I'm almost ashamed to call myself a DM.
On the bright side, the players did make an all out effort to save the cleric before taking out the boss, I was very proud.

D&D math is wonky. 3x for spirited charge plus x3 for a crit with a lance would be x5, not x6 (which you effectively did).

You multiply everything together at once, and the forumla for adding is

X + (Y-1) + (Z-1), where X, Y, and Z are all crit multiplier values.

Thus

3x + (3x -1x) = 5x multiplier.

It was *9, actually.

Wait, how's that work? The crit is times 3, so the damage would have had to been 87. Explain your build and attack.

Yeah, the ogre was undead, and I multiplied x6 instead of x5.

29 base damage, x3 from charge, x3 from crit.

Too bad...

That's not x6; thats x(3x3) = x9.

Plus multiplication only tells you how many times to roll the damage and add it up. The multiplication only applies to the dice rolling directions, not to the results of those rolls.

You should have rolled your damage 5 times (assuming it wasn't immune to critical hits) and added it all together.

Yeah, I kinda did x3x3 there...

As mentioned before, nevermind this thread. I was just excited to see big numbers!

I thought you didn't multiply adittional damage in crits (Like from sneak attacks or the flaming property) and you were supposed to roll the damage again a number of times equal to your crit modifier (Continuing to add the damage modifier)
