Doing some work on my pantheon, trying to think up titles for a Deity with affinities for Ice.

Any suggestions would be helpful and loved.

Nice suggestion, but I mean Titles, not Names.

For example, Boccob is the Uncaring One.

Doesn't that depend at least partly on the diety. I wouldn't give the same title to a CG Ice diety as I would a NE Ice diety...

Hm. The Glacier strikes me as a good title. Neutral, implacable, the glacier isn't good and evil, it simply -is-.

"Cryonax" of the Infinite Cold

What is the name of the deity? It would help figure out a title that flows.

I have not actually decided on an "official" name for her. All I have is her mortal alias, which of course is simply Winter.

Because I like stealth lulz.

There is Auril, the Frostmaiden. Uhh Cryonax, Prince of Cold (Lame). There's the Pale Prince of the Long Night from the 4e court of stars article. I can't recall his name.

I can't think of originals right now.

A very small, frail looking, beautiful woman. Pale, short white hair, eyes that are kind of mirrorish so that they change through all colors depending on the light. Has the dress and bearing of a mage, and wears lots of jewelry in colors that stand out against the snow. Her primary colors otherwise are silver and blue.

In terms of class, she's primarily a druid.

... the Unending (attaching Snow/Frost/Winter/Blizzard/etc. optional)
... the Forth Season
... the Frozen One
... the White Death
... the Snowweaver
... the Cold Hearted

Though some of those might be more fitting of an evil deity, I figured that since winter is generally considered to be a harsh season that one needs to steel themselves to face they might fit a neutral one too.

"She who stills the blood"
"Lady Hoarfrost"---use a homonym of "hoar" if you don't like her. :P
"The Blizzard Rider"
"The Winter Queen"
"The Mistress of the Frozen Solstice"
"Frostbiter"
"Mistress Snowcowl"
"Soulchiller"

DragoonWraith
2009-12-06, 11:14 PM
"The Box Lady"

And when she freezes someone solid, she can say "I've put you in a box. How does that make you feel?" possibly while reclining on a couch.

Sorry, this is an inside joke that all of like four people in the world, none of whom read this forum, would get, but I couldn't resist.

Depends on your deity's morals, for one thing. For example:

Good:
<Name>, Seamstress of Snow. This deity might stand for the bringing of frost and snow to cover the sleeping land the way a blanket covers a sleeping babe.

Neutral:
<Name>, the Relentless Winter. This deity might stand for the harshness and unforgiving nature of the world's frozen wastes.

Evil:
<Name>, the Chilling Death. This deity might stand for the chill of death upon the living.

Lawful:
<Name>, the Frozen Absolution. This deity might stand for the clockwork-like way that winter sets upon the land.

Chaotic:
<Name>, the Pounding Frost. This deity might stand for the rapid transitions between the freely falling snow and the harsh, heavy blizzards.

Personalitywise, she's mostly indifferent towards the perils of mortals, but enjoys their company. She's something of a storyteller and a bit of a jokester. More of the kind of person you'd expect to own a cabin in the mountains than being a deity.

Sort of like Flarlaghan.

The White Queen.
The Ice Queen.
The boop Queen. Which you call her depends on how many fingers have fallen off so far.

Mother Snow.
The Night's Blanket.
The Cold Embrace.

Just off the top of my head.

Despite you already having a title, I really think you should go with one of these:

Old Cold
The King of Icy Sting
Rigid-Frigid
The Shivermeister
The Benumbed Baron
Ol' Nippy-Nips

Fortuna

Dredging up my knowledge of Latin, I suggest Gela, Algora, Algida as names. Hiberna could also work, although it is less awesome. Glacialia is a tad obvious, but I like it.

The Pure One
The Eternally Pure
Lady of Winter's Sleep
The Hibernating One
Lady of the Chill Wind
Lady of the North Wind
The Frozen Breath
The Clinging Frost
The Frozen Rapier
Bearer of the Thaw
The White Soul
The White Star
Rider of the White Bear
The Preserver

The Lady of Temperatures Below the Freezing Point of Water at Standard Temperature and Pressure

Okay, looks lke you chose a title already. As well. As for a name, my ice mages are normally named Celian, so I'll suggest Celia.

yes- official titles can be fixed, but it might be fun to have a variety of modes of address- florid compliments, so to speak.

"Your Supreme Iciness"
"O Lady of Exquisite Chill"
"Great Freezing One"

etc.

Oh, I am sure I will find a place for most, if not all of these. I was just looking for common titles. On that note, The White Star is also nice, nice enough that I got it on my own.

:P

Reading the names now.

Read Pratchett's Wintersmith, Moorcock's Ice Schooner and Rohan's World of Winter. All these starred supernatural powers of ice and cold, many of which were referred to only indirectly.

Tolkien's Morgoth could also be held to be an exemplar of cold and darkness (Angband was in the far north and all...), as could Lovecraft's Ithaqua (obv.). Steal some of their epithets and titles...

Possible Epithets:

The Great White
The Wailing Night
The Preserver
The Chill Song
The Taker of Flesh (because, well, frostbite)
Tither of Warmth
The Clear Sky
Lord/Lady of The North
He/she Who Walks On Snow/The Wind
He/she Who Freezes The Breath

For names, check baby name websites and books... http://www.babynamesworld.com is where I go when I'm stuck. You can search by origin or do an advanced search for meaning.

There are a lot of names out there that are strange by North American standards, so it's good to find baby name books that highlight foreign names.

And if you're worried your friends might be a little weirded out by the baby name books, well... blank book jacket.

To her face:
-the Pure

Unofficially and somewhat blasphemic:
-the Barren

Both in regards to this cold goddess' infertility, somewhat a sore spot for her, though mostly accepted as part of her. Taunt her about it and you will be hounded by blizzards until dead. Then reanimated as a frost zombie or something.

Pronounceable

A shame you can't go with Frostfather. Not very original, but would be alliterative. Alliteration is good.
