View Full Version : leShay the Coolest (Epic) Monster Ever?

He's definately my favorite. But then, I like rangers - fluffwise at least.

Reasons I like him?
1. The name. Who else gets to start with a lowercase letter? (I realize that may be because it's something french or italian, but still!)
2. He's a fey! A mighty champion of nature, but also (conceivably) a soft-hearted individual who cares about the planet, and other people. His gaze doesn't even kill - it just stops people from fighting.
3. He dual-wields the best 1-handed weapons in the game, without minuses. I know using a 2-handed weapon is better, but I'm personally a fan of dual-wielding, and that's just cool.
4.

Awesome.

d'Artagnan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D'Artagnan) laughs at your foolish fantasy names!

As for my favorite D&D fantasy character... eh. The only one I've really read about is Strahd von Zarovich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strahd), which is pretty impressive for a vampire but hardly the most awesome fictional character I've come across.

Genius Loci (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/geniusLoci.htm): Yes, the ground IS trying to eat you.

I like the Loci because I think there's a lot of potentially cool things to be done with the concept of a living earth - Loci spawning where particularly auspicious events happen, for example, imbued with abilities and alignment appropriate to the event.

I have to say, though, I think Phanes win the name battle. There's something really cool about that word.

Bah! leShay's are just elves except even more pretentious. Atropals are where it's at. A flying undead god-fetus the size of a house that automatically kills everyone under 10th level who comes near it? That's pretty hardcore.

Eh, atropals are a bit grotesque. I'm not too fond of leShay, but I think the OP has the right idea about fey. I just happen to prefer those like the Master of the Hunt (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM5_Gallery/102523.jpg), or the Hoary Hunter (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/hoaryHunter.htm): terrible, cruel, and majestic. They're not here to defend nature against the ravages of the civilized world; they're here to hunt you down one moonlit, foggy night and bear your soul off to far-off realms as a trinket. Or maybe let their dogs tear you apart for sport. You are not a worthy adversary to them. You're not even really an enemy. You're a game animal. There's something about fey that's very atmospheric to me—when they're evil, at least. Good ones all too often spring for flowers and butterfly motifs, and even when they don't it's hard to portray inhuman benevolence without waxing purple.

I also confess a certain fondness for the Anaxim (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/abomination.htm#anaxim). It slices! It dices! It staples (at a distance of 60 feet)! It shoots lightning out of its eyes! It's a mad invention-that-never-should-have-been, forged by a god one day after a particularly bad night of drinking or what-have-you. Really, how can you not like a creature whose full attack routines involve chainsaws and peppering their enemies with lightning and iron spikes?

(Plus, with a bit of creative refluffing you can turn it into a D&D version of Edward Scissorhands.)

I like the leShay as well. They seem like the Seelie/Unseelie sort of elves, powerful and mercurial.
A friend of mine is a huge fan of that giant that's got markings similar to a killer whale in stormwrack.
I also like the Shade template (FRCS) applied to most enemy, just because shades are cool with neat abilities.

I gotta say my favorite HAS to be the Xixecal
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/abomination.htm#xixecal

He summons old white dragons 5/Day, and he is a monster on his own. The dragons mine as well be parrots on this colossus. Also, does this not remind anyone of the "Earth Titan" that comes out of the Seal in the Hercules movie?
Or is it just me :P
(Sorry, fan of that movie.)

On another note.
Not as overwhelming as some obstacles, but just look at those abilities.
-Perma Dire Winter effect.
-Summons
-Perma Ability Drain
-300ft Breath weapon.

I once made a demilich who was just a ribcage. It specifies that a demilich has to a be a part of your body, it doesn't say that it has to be the skull.

The precious gems were imbedded between each vertebrae of the spine.

Then clearly, the best part to use would be a Demi-Lich foot, your enemies would laugh at you and you'd destroy them while they were distracted, plus you'd get to make all sorts of "kick your ass" jokes.

Why not get 216 demi-liches together and seem to be a be-jeweled skeleton? There are two large problems with this plan
a) Getting enough value in gems on the really tiny bones.
b) Getting 216 demiliches to cooperate.

Anaxim and Phane are quite likely the coolest of the abominations, folowed closely by the Xixecal.

But a monster that really holds a special place in my stand is the Lavawight. Just think about it, when he takes your hit points away, he takes them away for good. Sure, there is also the shape of fire, but it just isn't as cool as the lavawight.

It is though, when you think about it, a thoroughly bizarre concept. In order to create one you need to find the grave of a powerful caster and all Worms that Walk were created from the corpses of powerful casters. The example used in the SRD is of a level 23 Wizard! IMO, any 23rd level Wizard that got himself actually killed is not worth bringing back from the dead. Though, at least it gives him some pseudo-immortality that he was too stupid to figure out during his 23 levels of Wizardry.

When you consider most people don't get above 6th level, I'd say 23rd level (Which is Epic) is pretty darn powerful. Thats literaly world shaping power.

I thought of it as a riskier version lichdom. The (likely insane) wizard tends his own grave as instructed, and then gets a servant to cast the necessary spells for the ritual after he kills himself. Efficient? Not as much as a lich, but still better than dieing from old age eventually.

As for my personal favorite epic monster...hmm...Assuming we are barred from selecting unique beings it'd probably have to be...Huh...I can't remember it's name. It's an obyrinth from Dagon's layer. At least I think it's epic. (It certainly LOOKS epic)

Psion Uncarnate 10 in incorporeal, as so immune to all (Ex) attacks. You'll need to be something immune to death and ability damage (undead, construct) and give yourself immunity to fire.

So, about level 15.
