View Full Version : So... Power Attack...

Yesterday, I was talking with my friend about a build of his.

Him: "And then my Cleric Power Attacks at -15 for +30 to damage!"
Me: "You can't do that, it caps at -5."
Him: "I'm pretty sure it doesn't."
Me: "I'm pretty sure it does."

So I looked it up today, and it mentions nothing about capping at -5... I could have sworn it did though, and can almost remember hearing such being said on this very forum. Am I insane, or am I missing something?

Combat Expertise caps at -5 and is widely decried for that fact(among others).
Stone Power, which is similar to PA also caps at -5.

Combat Expertise caps at -5 without additional feats, Power Attack is capped only by BAB.

Might cap at -5 in NWN.

You might've been confused with Combat Expertise (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#combatExpertise).

Gonna get ninja'd...

EDIT: ...Yikes.

Power Attack [General]
Prerequisite
Str 13.
Benefit
On your action, before making attack rolls for a round, you may choose to subtract a number from all melee attack rolls and add the same number to all melee damage rolls. This number may not exceed your base attack bonus. The penalty on attacks and bonus on damage apply until your next turn.
Special

That is the only cap I see on the power Attack

Edit: I KNEW I was going to get Ninja'ed

I get that at my table a lot. I basically ignore them and use the correct numbers anyway.

Might cap at -5 in NWN.

Nah, NWN uses Pathfinder's Power Attack structure with a fixed penalty for a fixed bonus.

Huh, guess I owe my friend a dollar or something. Thanks guys (I think. I really need that dollar! :smallannoyed:)

He would need to be at least 15th level to pull that off though.

Yes, it was fixed at -5.

Yes, it was fixed at -5.

Higher than level 15 if he's a cleric. Level 20 cleric to use power attack trade off of -15 for a +30 damage. And tell him to use two-handed weapon!

IIRC, DDO Power Attack also capped at -5.

Yeah, NWN not only took it from Pathfinder, but they used it seven years before Pathfinder even existed. Whoa. :smallamused:

Hah. Yeah, I know, it was just faster than actually describing how NWN did it.

I'm not sure where it came from either, but in my current group I'm playing in, I had someone say the same thing that it's maxed at -5. I had assumed they were thinking of combat expertise.

3.0 and it's derivates (D20 modern, third party books released at the same time) also had a -5 cap.

It's always the worst when someone gets their 3.5 and 3.0 mixed up. We had a player who was convinced Haste gave an extra standard action, in one of my groups.

This is not correct. The only cap on Power Attack in D20 Modern (and to the best of my knowledge D20/3.0) is the base attack bonus of the character.

This is true. It was like that in IWD2 which I think confuses a lot of people. From D&D 3.0 SRD (http://www.opengamingfoundation.org/srd.html):

Power Attack [General]
Prerequisite: Str 13+.
Benefit: On the character's action, before making attack rolls for a round, the character may choose to subtract a number from all melee attack rolls and add the same number to all melee damage rolls. This number may not exceed the character's base attack bonus. The penalty on attacks and bonus on damage applies until the character's next action.

Divine Power, but yeah.

At least he isn't using DMM cheese (because we don't have Complete Divine(?)). :smalltongue:
