As a DM, do you try to make encounters that fit perfectly and make sense for that exact location? Or do you just throw whatever wherever?

My players are about to go through a large forest and I want several encounters, but I'm running out of foresty type creatures in their level range to fight. Is there a place that shows what type of creatures would be in what type of environment?

Aren't the random encounter tables in the DMG organized by environment type?

I try to stick with stuff that's got the right or at least very similar environment. I'm slowly building my homebrew world, and as I'm going I'm determining which creatures live precisely where, so when I'm done I'll have an easy list for each part of the world.

But when in doubt go with the old fail-safe: Deinonychus on hoverboards.

Even if you go solely by the charts there can always be a "sub-species" of a creature that favors a different environment but uses the same stats.

Arboreal scorpions
Amphibious fungus
Jungle dwelling bugbears

Use your imagination! :smallwink:

Edit* Dengar in a dumptruck?

Well we're playing 4E now and I didn't see that in the DMG. But now that you mentioned it, I'm pretty sure there was something like that in 3.5 DMG and I'm pretty sure I could use that as a starting point.

I like how Barbarians are a race now.

They prefer the term "Human".

Bah, they can't read, just tell them that they are classified under "human".

Sense? That's what I force the players to make of the lunacy that gets thrown at them. I have enough to think about without bothering with this 'sense' you speak of.

(hey, if they want to go tromping around the mythic underworld made manifest (http://www.philotomy.com/#dungeon)...)
