If this is 3.5, Eberron Campaign Setting.

Alright, everybody here seems to have answered the where can the OP find it question, though only two have touched upon what an Artificer is.

I have relatively little experience with the 3.5 version, but the 4e version is one who is skilled in the manipulation of magical enchantment. Not necessarily a walking magic item factory, and more often the guy who can use magic items more often and better than anybody else.

Specifically, in 4e they serve a party in the Leader role, similar to the Bard, Cleric, Warlord, or Shaman, with a different power source to all but the Bard, and different enough mechanisms and fluff that it's distinct from the Bard. (The Bard inspires others through performance vs. the Artificer enhances others through impromptu alchemical creations or odd uses of magical items)

((Feel free to correct me where I'm mistaken))

You can find the stat block for the 3.5 Artificer and its Infusions on crystalkeep.

The Artificer can build any magic item (it gets all the core item creation feats as class abilities) with a suitable UMD check and it can make them 2 levels before a real spellcaster can. It gets a pool of experience that can be spent on item crafting each level.

The Artificer has several features that make it one of the most abusable base classes. On top of effectively doubling the party wealth and making every item imaginable available, it has Infusions and class abilities that allow free metamagic to be applied to wands. This can get ridiculous pretty quickly.

Basically, artificers can not only MAKE any item, but they're great at manipulating items and enchantments. For example, artificers have a spell with a 10 mins/level duration that applies any +equivilant enchantment to a sword (higher levels of the same thing give larger +s) so a decent leveled artificer can just say "for the next couple hours your sword is Vorpal, bro"

So, basically, an artificer can make everyone the best possible equipment, and then make that equipment function even better. Have an artificer in the party and mention you're going up against undead? Everyone goes into the dungeon holding Holy weapons. Dragons? Dragonbane.

Armor, too. I found out there's an armor enchantment that grants flight and the power to turn into a tornado. The artificer can toss this onto people at will (abliet as a temporary, but STILL)

Inspector Gadget!

Artificer is the guy who makes Inspector Gadget work. Gadget is the artificer's experimental do-it-all Warforged with too many embedded components. :smalltongue:
