Ok, I would like help with some minor optimization. I am trying to join an 18th level pbp game. I would like to play some sort of wizard. I have access to the SRD and Crystal Keep, so while other things are allowed, I don't have access to them. I don't want it to be too cheesy, but I'm going for a mostly support character. More Batman than Blasty McBlasty, but I want an actual mechanically interesting character. LA is allowed, with buyoff in effect.

My stats:

18
14
14
17
17
15

These can be arranged in any fashion.

The main issue here is that I've never played at this high of level, so I have no idea how to go about this.

Thanks for all your help.

I don't know about anyone else, but those stats just scream gish. search google for some of those builds.

Another option is a bard/sublime chord, which gets all the sweetness of inspire courage for buffing, and spells galore. maybe the two could be combined...

Hmm, Wizard. Luckily, they don't "need" much in the way of splat power, something like Wizard 13/Archmage 5 is perfectly viable.

With LA buyoff, Tiefling as a race is very nice.

Uh, regarding what is important to have...
You want defenses (this means walking around buffed, and more importantly, Divination), to have the action economy on your side (Quicken Spell is mandatory, how much more depends on the optimization level of the rest of the party, I guess) and... something to do.

Regarding the last part - is there a particular trick/style you find attractive? You'll have 18th level Wizard casting, you can have any trick you want. :smalltongue:

There's not necessarily any one trick I'm interested in, plus, I don't want to simply spam the same trick over and over again. That's boring.

Also, I just mean caster of some kind. It doesn't necessarily have to be wizard exactly.

Id need to see the rest of the party, but if you want the "Spell Artillery" Guy, then id say focus on an area of damage that few (if any) monsters are immune to. My suggestion:

Domain Wizard (Force) [Run by DM of course!]10/Argent Savant 5/Master of the Unseen Hand 3

basically, shove and lift till your little heart's content. and be some race thats almost inconspicuous. Like NO ONE'D expect that little gnome to be able to fling the Giant 200ft into the air, then giggle with glee as he becomes paste on the cobblestone road...

Have you looked into the War Weaver yet? Buff the party as a move action and lay BFC as a standard, with a swift left over as needed (such as a quickened blast potshot, and technically an immediate left as well for celerity if an enemy mage requires special "attention"). Other nice dovetails to that are Legacy Champion 5 to get 9th level spells into the tapestry and Spellguard of Silverymoon 4 with the feat Magic of the Land, to basically allow any spell period to go in the tapestry. SGoSm is ok to 5th too, since they get +1 Spell Power, and that'd offset the loss of caster level from War Weaver. You'll lose a second one from Legacy Champion, for an endgame CL of 18, but that's still 9th level spells, and you can carry over spells put into the tapestry from the day before, since it lasts 24 hours and you only need 8 hrs of rest to prep more spells. Hopefully Doc Rock sees this, he's the one that turned me on to the power that is the War Weaver. To quote his summary, "You're not GOD, you are Legion, the thousand eyed titan who laughs at the sky. Dare them to stop you!"

didn't see the book limit. if you are going for more of a support character, look here (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/datafind/feats.shtml) for feats, here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060802a&page=2) for the warblade, and google for the maneuvers. you can go bard 4/warblade 14. but that's probably not what you are looking for. if you want to be a gish spellcaster, you might want to try the swiftblade. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070327) If you are going epic, take nine levels, so that you can get 9th level spells, and take level 10 at level 21. the only reason it isn't one of the best prcs in the game is because it looses a few caster levels. but it is still worth it. take something like gray elf focused specialist (get rid of another school for more spells per day from your school) tranmuter (or domain wizard if possible) wizard 6/swiftblade 9/archmage 3, finish off with 2 more levels of archmage, and then the last level of swiftblade. cast haste on your party members (free action 1 per round), cast an extra spell each round

My personal build for gishes is Fighter 1/Wizard 5/Eldritch Knight 9/Abjurant Champion 5. This will net you 18th-level spellcasting and a BAB of +17, and it only requires one splatbook (Complete Mage).

They can be combined. Bard gishes can work quite nicely.

Bard 7/ Eldritch Knight 1/ Arcane Archer 2/ Sublime Chord 2/ Abjurant Champion 5/ Eldritch Knight 3 (requires Elf with the Militia (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Militia) or Otherworldly (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Otherworldly) feat) - 9th level spells 17 BAB

Bard 7/ Fighter 2/ Eldritch Knight 1/ Sublime Chord 2/ Abjurant Champion 5/ Eldritch Knight 3 - 9th level spells 17 BAB

Bard 6/ Crusader 2/ Jade Phoenix Mage 2/ Sublime Chord 2/ Jade Phoenix Mage 8 - 9th level spells 17 BAB

18 int, 17 con, 17/15 dex, 15/17 wis, w/e for cha and str. Search forums for spell selection tips (e.g., google with "site:www.giantitp.com"). That's 90% of your build. I'd still tack on a blasty spell or two since they have their uses, like maybe a fireball. For gear get a billion low level utility scrolls, maybe a wand or two, pearls of power, ability score boosters, staff(s), etc. i.e., spells, spells and more spells.

OP stated that (s)he only has what can be found on the internet as books/sources. that's why sublime chord doesn't work, nor does abjurant champion, or almost all of the prcs that aren't in the srd. that's why I suggested swiftblade.

In that case, I'm going to second the Wizard/Archmage suggestion. Become Batman and go to town.
