Is there any complete list of monsters that have innate spellcasting (like the Naga or dragons) and which books they are from?

Not to my knowledge. Sinfire Titan might know; lists are his thing.

Well if not and no one else plans on making one, anyone object to turning this thread into such a list?

Note that was just a serch of the SRD for "spells as", 1.may have missed a manifesting monster or two 2. don't intend to do anything more.

Well, Not all people see Psionics and Magic as the same thing. ^^;

Though I will now go through all the books I have on hand and start making a list.

I know the Spellweavers(MM2, IIRC) cast as a sorcerer with level = to their HD.

They are also awesome for having 6 arms that allow them to cast up to 6 levels of spells in a round(THAT'S LIKE 1000 MAGIC MISSILES!)

Sure, I'll help. From the Expanded Psionics Handbook:

Mind Flayer, Psionic (9th level Psion (Telepath))
Unbodied (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/unbodied.htm) (4th level Psion (Telepath))

There isn't anything that acts as a caster or manifester in Complete Psionic, though. Actually, the creature list is kind of pathetic. (Well, the whole book is...)

[EDIT] I know Ethergaunts (Fiend Folio) are arcane spellcasters.

Pixies only have SLA to my knowledge. Sylphs on the other hand..have some good IC if they have enough HD.

The Hobgoblin Warcaster and Warsoul from MM5 count as well, since they do not have levels in a casting class. Warcaster is as Wiz 4, and Warsoul is as Wiz 9, IIRC.

Ethergaunts from Fiend Folio, Each variety has different levels of wizard.

Oooohh.. no one remembered Driders? :smallcool: They get to choose whether they want to cast as 6th level clerics, sorcerers, or wizards (though presumably only female driders would be allowed to be innate clerics, assuming that driders are only made from drow that failed Lolth in some manner. Or were just in the wrong place when she was P.O.'ed... Lolth is not very nice.)

Driders aren't counted because technically they took 6 levels in that class prior to becoming Driders. Thus, it's not innate, it's from a class.

So Lolth only ever converts 6th level Drow? The class levels aren't reflected in their stat blocks, only the 6 hit dice of Aberration, which gets them 6th level casting innately. Also, though there must be non-caster drow who displease Lolth, all driders cast spells, so they must gain the ability as part of the conversion process.

I'm pretty sure, though it's been a good while since I read the Drow fluff that had mechanics next to it, that Driders are created when 6th level Drow characters fail a special test. The Monster Manual even says in the fluff box that they were 6th level Drow before becoming Driders.

EDIT: Now, the Pathfinder Drider looks like it might actually have innate spellcasting. It has 9 Racial dice and I don't believe any of the Lolth fluff exists or will exist in PF.

The epic Neh-Thalggu (Brain Collector) (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/nehThalggu) casts as a sorcerer of level equal to the number of brains it has eaten to a maximum of 13. I think that makes everything for true spellcasting in the SRD.

Yup, they have spellcasting as an Ex ability.

Added to the list and I totally forgot I made this thread >.>;

@Dspeyer: Added.

@Thurbane: Added all your list save Huecuva. They have no innate spellcasting.

Not to my knowledge. Sinfire Titan might know; lists are his thing.

1: AFB, so no go.

2: I do this out of posting style. I'm a poet by nature and I prefer this to paragraphs.

3: It takes me a while to do a list like I have in the Incarnum Handbooks.

I may be good about finding CR appropriate encounters, but that's because I'm capable of judging the approximate strength of my players and their characters fairly well and because I have 2 years of optimization experience under my belt. The best I can do is provide potential source books. The MMs have been covered, but what about Lords of Madness, Heroes of Horror, Libris Mortis, or the Draconomicon? I know all three of those books printed monsters other than sample enemies, and the Draconomicon at the very least can provide you with more True Dragon types.

In fact, I think there's a CG monster in LoM that got casting advancement...

And some people do. Why exclude psionics, and by extension those people?

Because this is a list of Innate Spellcasting, not Innate Spellcasting and Manifesting.

@Sinfire: I'll go check those books in a few minutes. Though I'm saving Dragons and Naga for when I have a lot of free time since there are so many.

1) Some people see the difference as too insignificant to matter.
2) The type of people who would post in this thread are the same people who would post in a thread of Complete List of Innate Manifesting.
3) A list of Innate Spellcasting alone is less useful than a list of Innate Spellcasting & Manifesting.

FWIW, I totally agree with keeping psionics separate from spellcasting in this case. Despite the transparency, they are different systems. Same goes for incarnum, invocations, supernatural abilities etc.

I think that it would be more convenient to make separate lists for different sorts of abilities, but also that it would be even more convenient to have all of the lists in a single post.

Just a thought.
