Dust of Sneezing and Choking, Anklets of Translocation, Quaal's Feather Token(Tree), Wand of Lesser Vigor, many of the Weapon/Armor crystals, and IIRC the Artificer's Monacle.

At least to start. I could build characters at level 10 with no items costing more than 5K.

Could you specify the locations of the items (book-wise) if they're not in the SRD? Thanks.

A lot of the least and lesser weapon/armor crystals
Bracers of Arcane Freedom
Boots of Agile Leaping
Anklet of Translocation
Boots of the Battle Charger
Gloves of Object Reading (No fun at ALL for the DM, though...)
Ring of the Darkhidden
Some of the Chronocharms
Shiftweave
Dispelling Cord
Healing Belt
Blessed Bandages
Daylight Pellets
Silversheen
1st level wands

Glove of the Master Strategist is close enough to the price range to be mentioned. That one is in Ghostwalk, all the others are in the MIC or core. :smalltongue:

Wait, there is something usable in that book?

Are you absolutely sure?

I rather happen to like Ghostwalk.

Handy Haversack, hands down.

Some Lv 1 wands are really worth it at 750.

I am reasonably sure. I do not have the book on hand.

Gloves of Object Reading (No fun at ALL for the DM, though...)

Oh, your DM just isn't creative enough. I can tell you now that owning Gloves of object Reading(or manifesting the power) in my games will gross you out very quickly. :smallamused:

I'll second Dispelling Cord (MIC). Highly useful for a 2000 gp item. Useful at any level you'd have it, from 5-20.

Nobody has mentioned one of my favorites - the Ring of Sustenance. It lets me take a short nap, then be alert enough to watch over the party the rest of the night.

Feather tree tokens. Any problem can be solved by enough of them, used creatively.

Least/Lesser Ironward Diamond (MIC; DR 1/- or 3/- for up to 10 or 30 points per day. The lesser ones are good for switching out as you use them up.)
Least/Lesser Crystal of Lifedrinking (MIC; heal 1 or 3 up to 10 or 30 points per day whenever you damage an enemy with the weapon. Again, switch out as needed. In combination with the ironward diamonds, a very nice source of gratuitous hit points.)
Artificer's Monocle (MIC; identify items with detect magic.)
Goggles of Foefinding (MIC; ignore cover other than total cover. This is half of the improved precise shot feat for 2,500 gp.)
Anklets of Translocation (MIC; teleport 10 ft. as a swift action 2/day. Perfect for full attacks and flanking.)
Arcanist's Gauntlets (MIC; 2/day CL +2 on a 1st level spell. At 500 gp, low level wizards and sorcerer's should buy as many as they can run through in a day.)
Brute Gauntlets (MIC; up to 3/day morale bonus melee damage. Again, 500 gp, the perfect switch out item for weapon types.)
Empowered Spellshard (MIC; 3/day empower a specific 1st level spell. Wizards can sometimes afford these instead of an amulet of health.)
Healing Belt (MIC; lots of healing for 750 gp.)
Pearl of Power (DMG; more 1st level spells are always fun.)
Memento Magica (MIC; sorcerers love 1st level spells too.)
Handy Haversack (DMG; for those who always want to use something different.)
Efficient Quiver (DMG; for archers who need arrows of every special material.)
Metamagic Rod of Lesser Extend (DMG; because those pumped up 1st level spells should last twice as long.)
Wand of Lesser Vigor (DMG/SpC; because 11 hit points healed is always better than 2-9 hit points healed, even if it takes a bit longer.)
Eternal Wand (SpC; a bit lower on the list, but if you plan to adventure for more than 25 days, a pretty decent bargain. And remember, cure light wounds is an arcane spell because of bards, and thus the wizard can use it on the cleric.)

My preferred picks for casters:

Anklets of Translocation (1400 gp) - Everyone loves swift action teleportation.
Gloves of the Starry Sky (1100 gp) - Light, spontaneous spells, and stacking energy resistance if you pair it up with the other items from the set. I prefer these over Arcanist's Gloves.
1st-level wands (750 gp) - It's surprising how much use you can get out of these if you pick the right spells and don't make the mistake of being stingy with them.
Rod of Extend Spell, Lesser (3000 gp) - A little on the expensive side, but it'll stay useful for a very long time.
Handy Haversack (2000 gp) - Solves your carrying capacity problems if you dumped Str. Not that exciting, though.
Cloak/Vest of Resistance +1 (1000 gp) - no-one likes failing saving throws.
For melee:

Heartseeking Amulet (3000 gp) - Turn your full two-handed power attack into a touch attack 3 times per day. It's so good it's hard not to take it.
Anklets of Translocation (1400 gp) - just as good for melee as for casters.
Amulet of Tears (2300 gp) - It's a really tough choice between this and the Heartseeking Amulet for your throat slot. Heartseeking does loads of damage, but I've seen this keep PCs alive time and time again.
Cloak of Resistance +1 (1000 gp) - because failed saving throws are bad.
Bracers of Opportunity (2300 gp) - if you have Combat Reflexes, you want this.
Least Crystal of Return (300 gp) - The best of the augment crystals IMO. Buy one for all your primary weapons.
Mithral Chain Shirt +1 (2100 gp) - The default armour for any non-caster with decent Dex.

Ring of Sustenance and HHH are the two best items, hands down. First negates basic needs and allows you to do ridiculous things like hide out in a cave for long periods of time without eating. And the sleep thing is insanely useful too.

The haversack turns any character into batman. The number of mundane or low magic things you can stuff in it and access at any time just breaks the low level game. Ropes, tanglefoot bags, smokesticks, tree tokens, potions, scrolls, wands, vials of acid, holy water, and ten foot poles all just a round away makes you so much safer.

My rogue recently purchased a "Belt of Invisability." Casts Invisability 1/day via command word... 960gp. Great for getting an extra sneak attack in here and there and running the hell away.

Also, I'm also a big fan of the HHH and most level 1 wands (especially for healing). Potions of Enlarge Person are killer for melee characters.

I'll prolly edit in some more when I have access to my books tommorrow.

Basically, MIC introduced a TON of low level magic items that are useful, but not terribly over powered. It makes playing at lower levels much more fun because you can have 3-4 magic items, and not have all of your wealth wrapped up in 1 pair of gaunlets of ogre power. A lot of them require opportunity costs like body slots and actions that evenually make you grow out of them, but at low levels, they are fun and interesting and USEFUL.

May I ask, what does MIC stand for? I've got a bunch of players about to start playing low level characters, and I'd like to look into a couple of cheap magic items.

Quaal's Feather Token: Swan Boat (450 GP, DMG). If deployed properly 20d6 falling object damage, no save.

Quaal's Feather Token: Whip (500 GP, DMG). Fire-and-forget magic weapon that attacks on its own, a great low-level counter to DR/magic, and free grappling for the sneak-attackers in the party.

Collar of Perpetual Attendance (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fools/20030401c) (2000 GP, WotC website). Unseen Servant at will.

Amber Amulet of Vermin (500-1200 GP, MIC p. 68). Flying mount for 1 minute, 1/day.

Gloves of Object Reading (3000 GP, MIC p. 107). Infinite uses, most of them to drive the DM insane.

Pearl of Speech (600 GP, MIC p. 118). Give your familiar/animal companion/monstrous cohort speech, allows them to activate command-word items, possibly spell-trigger items.

Steadfast Boots (1400 GP, MIC p. 138). If wielding a two-handed weapon, automatically deal double damage whenever you get charged.

Glyph Seal (1000 GP, MIC p. 161). Put it on a pocket, activate any 1st or 2nd level spell as a free action.

Hammersphere (1500 GP, MIC p. 161). One of the best fire-and-forget items in the game, particularly vs high DR or incorporeal creatures.

Sphere of Awakening (1800 GP, MIC p. 186). 1/day, wake everybody up, or get rid of fatigue/exhaustion/sleep effects.

Talisman of the Disk (500 GP, MIC p. 188). Tenser's Floating Disk at will.

Clockwork Steed (2150 GP, MM4 p. 32). 6HD construct mount that you can upgrade with DR, trip, bull rush, trample. Great bargain.

Crown of the White Ravens, Novice (3000 GP, ToB). Actually, I'd take Shadow Hands (Cloak of Deception or Shadow Jaunt) or the Stone Dragon Belt (to get Mountain Hammer) before the Crown.

Heart of the Beast (2000 GP, Magic of Faerun p. 160). One-shot Divine Powah, eat your heart out Mr. Cleric!
