View Full Version : Neverending Dungeon - Marcus

The air surrounding you fairly hums with the residue of magic, an aftereffect of the spell that brought you to this place. A quick glance reveals that you are in a small room, devoid of any life save for yourself. The sound of dripping water can be heard faintly, and the stone walls are slick with moisture. In complete defiance of logic, a torch is already lit, resting in a sconce near the room's single door.

There is a door at C-4, south side.

This time I think I'll be more... thorough. Marcus starts by searching the room for traps, taking 10 for a total of 19. This should take approximately 1 minute. Then he will proceed to take 20 on his search check of the scone and the torch. Free gifts are always suspicious.

EDIT: He will also search the door for traps, taking 10.

Your investigation bears no fruit. Nothing special. What are your vision modes?

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 03:11 AM
Darkvision out to 30 ft.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 03:13 AM
Deciding to disdain the revealing light of the torch, Marcus opens the door.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 03:16 AM
The hall continues east beyond your vision. 10ft into the hall there is a split to the north and west. At the edge of your vision you see a door on the northern side.

To the south continues for 20ft before splitting east, and after another 10ft there is a T intersection going east and west.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 03:24 AM
You know, I'm going to do something radical here.

Marcus is going to search every area he can reach without opening any doors. He will take 10 on search checks for traps for every square for a total of 19. He will not attempt to disable the traps, but he will mark their spot mentally and avoid them in the future. If he happens on a trap that he has not discovered by searching - in other words, he triggered - he will take 20 on studying the trigger mechanism of the trap.

That may give him a way of triggering it without suffering from it. Pause if he steps on a trap, regardless.

Marcus will start by heading east. He will take lefts at intersections, to start with, and if he returns to paths he has already traversed, he will follow them and take rights.

Oh, and he will take 10 on Move Silently checks for a total of 11.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 03:31 AM
You move 10ft east and reach the intersection. To the south it goes for 20ft and turns west. 5ft before the turn there is a door on the eastern side. To the north it goes for 20ft before turning east. From your position you don't see the end of the eastern hall.

If you turn left, which is north:
Reaching the bend, you turn east. The hall goes for 10ft before turning north. You take the turn. It goes for 10ft before reaching a T intersection going east and west.

To the west: It goes beyond your vision. 20ft into the hall there is a split north. 30ft into it in the edge of your vision there is a door on the southern part.

To the east: It goes for 30ft. 20 and 30ft into the hall there are turns north.

You have found nothing by searching the floor yet.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 03:38 AM
Marcus takes the left to the north, and then the intersection to the north. On the next intersection, he will take right. Continuing the search and move silently while at it.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 03:43 AM
You go west and then the first turn north? If so:

The hall extends 20ft north and turns east. Then it goes 10ft before turning north. At the end of that hall there is a door on the eastern side. If you approach the door you see the hall goes north for 10ft before turning west.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 03:46 AM
Marcus follows the hall north, taking the turn to the west, staying on the move until happening on another intersection, where he will take the left turn.

Search yadayadayada.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 03:49 AM
The west hall goes for 20ft before turning south. The hall goes for 30ft south and turns east. If you go down the hall:

You fail to find it, and the floor below you fails. Roll reflex

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 03:53 AM
Marcus goes down the hall and...

Floats gently to the bottom of the pit. Vestigial wings. He will then use his grappling hook with silk rope, taking 10 on Use Rope for a total of 15. Then he climbs out, taking 10 for 12.

He will follow the hall onwards.

EDIT: I'm so not playing fair this time. :smallwink:

Sliver
2010-01-01, 03:57 AM
:smallmad:

Reaching the end you see the hall goes east beyond your vision. 10ft down the hall there is a split going north. Another 20ft down the hall there is a split going south.

Whenever you want a map, just ask.

Now might be a good idea, although I'm fully intending to explore the whole map before engaging any enemies.

Here it is:

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 04:26 AM
Alright. I'm not perfectly sure of Marcus' current location, but he'll follow the northern hall - going east - and take the turn at the first intersection to the north. Searchin', movin' silently. For sake of speeding, he'll take the right at the next intersection, if there'll be one. (heading east.)

Sliver
2010-01-01, 04:36 AM
You go north 10ft. The hall turns east and goes for 10ft before turning north. At the end of the eastern hallway there is a large red note card hanging from the wall.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 04:40 AM
I guess I can't resist that. I just pray it doesn't read "I prepared Explosive Runes this morning." Marcus searches the card and it's surroundings, taking 20. If he finds no traps, he picks up the card and takes it to the torch at the starting room to read.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 04:42 AM
Examining the card for 2 minutes reveals it is indeed trapped.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 04:46 AM
Marcus backs away until he is behind the corner, and summons a bat swarm. Concentrating on it, he commands the swarm to pay a visit to the card. (E.g. disturb it enough to hopefully trigger whatever trap is on it.)

He waits for the boom.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 04:49 AM
Nothing happens.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 04:52 AM
Hmm. Care to elaborate on the method of trapping? A wire, attached to the card? Something magical? Pressure plates?

Sliver
2010-01-01, 04:55 AM
Magic, probably related to reading. :smallwink:

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 04:59 AM
Marcus dismisses his swarm, goes to the card, picks it up and attaches it to the far end of his 10-foot pole.

Then he retraces his steps to the main northern hallway, and continues east. At the next intersection, he'll take north, if possible, or continue east if not.

He keeps the card pretty much 10 feet away from him.

EDIT: Search, etc. etc.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 05:05 AM
I'm not sure I follow so here is a map:

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/1553/adumbration.jpg

Red is where the note is.

Also, I am unsure about the note so I will have to ask Tanaric about it. It will probably take some time before he answers..

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 05:07 AM
Ah, right, didn't realize the hallway continued north from the note. Marcus will follow that hallway, and take the western path at the end of it.

Tanaric
2010-01-01, 05:07 AM
You have questions, I have answers.

And insomnia.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 05:13 AM
That was unexpected... See PM Tanaric.. So yeah, you can do that.. How it will help you, I donno..

The eastern split goes for 30ft before turning south. 25ft into the hall there is a door on the southern part. In front of the door there is something painted on the floor.

The eastern hall at the intersection goes for 20ft before turning north.

The western hall that you take goes for 20ft before turning north.

Turning north at the western hall reveals the hall going beyond your vision. 10ft into the hall there is a split east. After another 10ft there is another split east and on the western wall there is another note card hanging from it. I forgot you can't see color in the dark..

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 05:18 AM
Search the card for traps, taking 20 for 29. If trapped by magical writing, leave it there. I already have one. If not trapped, just leave it there.

I have a feeling I should just burn these note cards.

Take the latter split to the east.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 05:22 AM
Not trapped.

The first hall goes for 10ft west, turns north. On the western side there is a door.

The second hall goes for 10ft west, turns south and goes for 10ft south. On the western side there is a door and the hall turns east back into the corridor you just passed.

Tanaric
2010-01-01, 05:23 AM
Oh, throw him a bone, Sliver. Give him the color of the cards. :smalltongue:

Yeah yeah, I know, Darkvision doesn't work like that...

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 05:25 AM
Map? I'll take the untrapped card after all. I'm a sucker like that. I'll go to the starting room and read the card. The one that is not trapped.

I have a feeling I'll regret this, but curiosity is a terrible thing.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 05:27 AM
The card is green. On the card it says “You've Been Poisoned. Have Fun.”

Map coming soon.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 05:38 AM
Grrr. A contact poison trap is CR 5, by the way. :smallannoyed:

Anyway, unless Marcus falls over dead suddenly, he'll head back to the place where he found the card and goes north, taking the right turn to east at the end of the hallway.

Head south at the next intersection, if possible.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 05:45 AM
The hall goes east for 20ft before turning north. 5ft before the turn there is a door on the southern part.

The hall goes north for 10ft before reaching an intersection.

To the north: it continues for 10ft before turning east.

To the east: It goes for 20ft before turning south.

Naw. Use rope, grappling hook, take 10 and climb up again. Head north, going west.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 06:07 AM
The hall goes for 20ft west and turns south. It goes 10ft south before splitting east. The split east: It goes 10ft east before turning south and returns to the revealed pit. Continuing down south: it goes for another 20ft after the split and turns west. It goes 30ft west and turns south. 15ft into the west hallway there is a door on the southern part. After the turn south it goes beyond sight. 5ft into the hallway there is a door on the eastern side and a large red and white bullseye on the floor in front of it.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 06:13 AM
Interesting. Marcus continues to head south.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 06:16 AM
After you move 20ft into the hall you see 30ft forward that there is a split west. When you are 10ft before the split you see the hall turns west. When you reach the split you see it goes for 10ft before turning north.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 06:18 AM
Marcus follows the split west, turning north.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 06:20 AM
The split goes for 20ft. 15ft in there is a door on the western side. The hall ends with a door on the northern part.

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 06:25 AM
So it's a dead end, in a way? Marcus will retrace his steps to the earlier intersection with the three options (he went west). This time he'll go east.

Sliver
2010-01-01, 06:27 AM
That means you are not exploring south of the split?

I think I've explored enough, for now. Time to get in some action. I'm going to go to this room:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9610/map1i.jpg

I'll use a rather unusual technique, however. Entering by the eastern door, by the way.

Marcus summons a bat swarm in the corridor before him. Standing slightly aside of the door - next to the door to the other room - he opens the door and commands the bat swarm to go inside and kill anything and everything.. Standard action to concentrate, move action to open the door.

Bat swarm statistics. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/swarm.htm#batSwarm)

Swarm damage to the gnome, I guess:

Adumbration
2010-01-01, 07:26 AM
The swarm goes after you, and you have to concentrate before it's turn. How are you doing that then?

Ah, I thought the swarm was already inside. My mistake. In that case... Move action to draw a scimitar, standard action to concentrate on the swarm.

Swarm moves inside, deals the aforementioned 5 damage, causes a bleeding wound and a DC 11 fortitude save against distraction. Did I miss anything?

Sliver
2010-01-01, 07:29 AM
I don't think so.. [roll0]

If so, 5-foot step back, use Summon swarm invocation to summon a murder of crows. Stats for those you can find in Tome of Magic, page 87. They are summoned to space AB-45.

Armor spell failure, due to shield (1-15 fails): [roll0].

Since invocations are a standard action to use, the swarm deals damage immediately: [roll1]

Also make a Reflex save DC 14 against being blinded and a fortitude save DC 12 against distraction.

Since the crows do not have the space to fly there, they are on the ground.

Darkvision 30 ft. Take 10 on search for a total of 19 on each square before stepping on it, that's about it. (Haven't had a reason yet to change this method.)

Marcus heads north, takes the turn west, and when he comes to the familiar intersection - I'm guessing - he'll take the north where he has not been yet.
