Two feats in Cityscape (both on page 61), Favored and Primary Contact, allow you to obtain 1 bonus rank in a single skill.

Additionally, the Codex Anathema from Lords of Madness 214 grants bonus ranks in Knowledge (dungeoneering, arcana, the planes), and the spell Leech Ghost Skill grants you all of the skill ranks of target ghost for a long duration.

That restriction does not apply if one of the two creatures is carrying the other, according to the official FAQ. In that case, I think treating it more as a rider/mount situation is more appropriate, at least for size and space sharing concerns.

No, Monkey grip lets you use a larger weapon in the same manner the meduim (or small if you are small) weapon was wielded.

Greatswords are 2 handed, large Greatswords are 2 handed for the feat.

Use a Large Longsword to use a large weapon 1 handed.

There are no feats that do that.

Q99:
How much would it cost to have a +1 to Wisdom on a Headband of +Int?

The rules discourage odd stat modifiers, as it is difficult to price them accurately (as they either confer the equivalent of +0 or +2 stat depending on whether it is even or odd).

MIC does have provisions for adding stat boosters to existing magic gear at no extra cost though. Simply pay the base gp cost. So it would cost 8000gp to add +2wis to that handband of int.

From Player's Handbook, page 53:
A master and his familiar can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the familiar’s type (magical beast).

Can Faerie Fire (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/faeriefire.htm) reveal creatures hidden by fog, such as Obscuring Mist? It claims that it defeats "similar effects" that provide concealment, after listing a few examples. Do we have any proof one way or the other than fog is or is not something that faerie fire can get past?

For what it's worth, the quick listing says that it "Outlines subjects with light, canceling blur, concealment, and the like." We all know that text trumps table, but when the table says something and the text sort of says the same thing... well, it's debatable. Anyone have evidence for either side?

The language of the spell seems to indicate that the spell causes plants to tangle up people in the spell's area [whether or not plants were in the area to begin with], but the note at the end, saying that the DM may alter the spell based on the nature of the entangling plants, which seems to indicate that there must be something in the area for the spell to work on, and the spell is transmutation to boot.

The continuous benefit of Slippers of Battledancing function while in a (land-based) Dervish Dance, as they boost the wearer's land speed. However, Dervish Dance is an augmented full attack, which is a full-round action. The bonus movement permitted in a Dervish Dance is not specifically a move action, and only an actual move action can activate the "true benefit" of Slippers of Battledancing.

The strict RAW reading of the combination of spells says this won't work.
While the spell closes mortal wounds and repairs lethal damage of most kinds, the body of the creature to be raised must be whole. Removing 99.98% of the original creature's body with Shrink Item makes it ineligible for Raise Dead.

A 120 No.
You move at your normal speed even when wearing medium or heavy armor or when carrying a medium or heavy load (unlike other creatures, whose speed is reduced in such situations).
Fly

A creature with a fly speed can move through the air at the indicated speed if carrying no more than a light load. (Note that medium armor does not necessarily constitute a medium load.) The Savnok tooth of Dahlver-Nar only works when the load or armor would reduce your speed for that movement mode. A load heavier than light does not reduce your fly speed; instead flying is disallowed.

I took that line to mean it must basically be in one piece, not sliced and diced into tiny peices. And even if so, there's still the effects of Resurrection and True Resurrections to consider. And isn't there a spell that revives the recently, within one round, dead without level loss or con drain?

The order is not be-all end-all.

For example, a Monk1/Druid4, while leveling again in Druid, can choose Natural Spell as a 6th level feat. As far as I'm aware, only the 'Choose Class' part being first is set in stone, nothing else.

You are able to shrink one nonmagical item (if it is within the size limit) to 1/16 of its normal size in each dimension (to about 1/4,000 the original volume and mass).

A medium character has 8 levels of monk, Imp. Natural attack, Superior Unarmed strike, and then gets 1 level of Fist of the Forest.

Monk 8 lvl -> 1d10

His unarmed attack does 3d6 (as it is) or 3d8 damage (raises)? Or something else?

Although it does not appear on the ranged weapons ability table, nothing in the description says it applies only to melee weapons (assuming the SRD and DMG don't contradict each other). Using the rule of "text trumps table", there would be a solid argument to allow it on a ranged weapon.

Does wounding contain text similar to this?

Bows, crossbows, and slings so crafted bestow the lawful power upon their ammunition.
Because I'm pretty sure abilities that work on ranged weapons do...

Strictly RAW, making a bow Wounding might work, but it only applies when you whack something with the bow.

General guidelines for such ad hoc traps call for a DC 15 Reflex save for someone to avoid the trap; see Dungeon Master's Guide II on pages 40 and following, and Heroes of Battle pages 35 and following.

Despite the physics being identical in our world, D&D generally imposes no damage for stopping abruptly at a wall -- even if going at the same speed as someone falling. It's falling specifically that causes the damage in D&D. If someone fails their Reflex save to avoid a falling trap, figure falling damage normally, including all reductions in damage from making Jump and Tumble checks. If they hit a wall instead, there's no damage; the penalty is merely that they can't get to where they want to be.

Probably much cheaper. As of MIC, you can add +6 enhancement bonus for str and con to existing magic items at no extra charge (beyond that they cost). While arms are not considered an associated slot for con, it still sounds feasible, so I assume your DM waives this limitation.

I am not sure how the price of the item is calculated, but if we assume 1.5*(1440000x2) = 4,320,000, this means the primary benefit is just 64000gp.

So the final cost should be 72000+64000 = 136,000gp, not enough to trigger epic pricing.

You can't make that conclusion. A size increase will have different effects on physical stats depending on starting and ending sizes. See Monster Manual Table 4-2: Changes to Statistics by Size (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#sizeIncreases) on page 291. A139 correction

Note that all items have prerequisites in their descriptions. These prerequisites must be met for the item to be created. Most of the time, they take the form of spells that must be known by the item’s creator (although access through another magic item or spellcaster is allowed). (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/creatingMagicItems.htm)

For the purpose of magic item creation, a spell is "known" if any of the people working on it know the spell, or even if the creator just has a magic item capable of casting it. In the case of using a magic item as the source, however, note that this consumes one use of the item for each day of crafting.

Q 141 I guess

So the increase of size bonus for the purpose of opposed combat checks is 64,000 gp?

Presumably.

+12 str and con each costs 1,440,000gp. I assume these benefits are added to the size increase feature (since there aren't any bracers of str/con) using the x1.5 cost pricing multiplier in the DMG (remember that ELH is quite primitive by today's standards, so it is hardly surprising to find yourself paying through the nose for abilities considered lackluster today).

Together, these two benefits would cost 4,320,000gp, leaving 64000gp left.

Of course, it helps that this formula also results in the cheapest price possible for said feature.

The alternative would be to use the most expensive feature as the base, and the rest x1.5. Which gives us 4,384,000-(2.5x1,440,000) or 928000gp. :smalltongue:

Q142

Does a character making a ranged attack with a bow lose the shield bonus from a buckler?

I know the buckler character can attack with a bow without penalty to the ranged attack, whereas someone attacking with a melee weapon in their buckler hand would receive a -1 penalty on that melee attack. But I'm unclear if the "no penalty with bow" part of the buckler also means the AC is kept. Cos losing the AC could also be considered a penalty.

Temotei

A 142

if you use a weapon in your off hand, you don’t get the buckler’s AC bonus for the rest of the round.

You do lose your shield bonus for the round because it takes both hands to use a bow. Both hands = primary hand + off hand. Since you're using your off hand, you lose the shield bonus to AC.

Alternatively, if you use a footbow, you don't, because it uses your feet and one hand.

So the warlock "Deceive Item" ability does nothing, then? I think you need to rethink your position, and read the warlock ability's text...
The Warlock's ability is specific to Use Magic Device and therefore implies that it also overrides UMD's restriction as it would otherwise be a nonsensical ability. A Rogue's Skill Mastery is a more general ability, and it neither mentions ignoring UMD's restriction nor requires it for the ability to make sense.

It's still specific towards allowing you to take 10 when you otherwise couldn't. And specific trumps general. Whether it's more general than Deceive Item or not isn't the point, it's more specific than the actual description of the skill itself.

Note that Deceive Item mentions being usable "...if distracted or threatened." Similar to the rogue's "adverse conditions" and "stress and distractions," no?

Also, RAW implies nothing, this is not a RAI thread. Either both can do it, or neither. And the "specific trumps general" points towards both.

Q161

Can a flying creature with the hover feat 5 foot step while flying? If so, in what directions?

Curmudgeon
2010-01-26, 08:15 PM
A 161

The answer depends on the creature's flying maneuverability, not just the Hover feat. If the creature had been hovering previously, any maneuverability will allow a 5' adjustment in a horizontal direction; average or better maneuverability will allow straight downward adjustment; and any creature can move in a diagonal downward direction. Only perfect maneuverability will allow a 5' adjustment upward. If the creature had not been hovering previously, only perfect maneuverability will allow a 5' adjustment in an arbitrary direction; good or worse maneuverability will allow a 5' adjustment in the same direction the creature had already been going; average or better maneuverability will allow a straight downward adjustment; and poor/clumsy will allow only a diagonal adjustment forward and down. See the table (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/movement.htm#tableManeuverability).

Curmudgeon

It's still specific towards allowing you to take 10 when you otherwise couldn't
if the prohibition is due to stress or distractions; Skill Mastery is not otherwise specific. The Warlock's Deceive Item has the same characteristics, but additionally is specific to override the general rule against "taking 10" with UMD.

That's enough for this discussion. If you want to continue the argument, please create a new thread.

Target or Targets

Some spells have a target or targets. You cast these spells on creatures or objects, as defined by the spell itself.

all designated targets within 30 feet that fail a Reflex saving throw and half that damage to creatures that succeed on the save. As defined by the spell, the valid targets for Wings of Flurry can make saving throws.
Saving Throws

Nonmagical, unattended items never make saving throws. Thus you cannot target nonmagical, unattended objects.

Q171
Do Meta Spell-Like Ability feats 'check' for spell level when the feat is taken only, or also when it's used to boost a SLA?

For example, say a 6th-level warlock takes Maximize Spell-Like Ability applied to eldritch blast. The warlock's maximum spell level to maximize is 1. Can he maximize a hellrime blast even though it's now effectively a 4th-level spell, since it's still the SLA he's taken the feat for?

Q172
Complete Arcane says that sudden metamagic feats can be used with SLAs because they "don’t require modified spell slots". Does this mean that a +0 metamagic feat which does not require modified spell slots, such as Energy Substitution, can be used in conjunction with SLAs? (it says later that "Except as noted above, metamagic feats can’t generally be used to modify spell-like abilities or invocations", which implies that there are some non-general cases where a non-sudden metamagic feat will work for a SLA)

The Complete Arcane feats that augment Spell-Like Abilities are specific to one spell-like ability, chosen when the feat is obtained. To apply these feats to other SLAs you must take the feat again.

Special: This feat can be taken multiple times. Each time, you apply it to a different one of your spell-like abilities.
Special: This feat can be taken multiple times. Each time, you apply it to a different one of your spell-like abilities. [This is in contrast to the feats in Book of Vile Darkness (like Empower Spell-Like Ability), which operate on all of a creature's SLAs and have daily limits for each.]

If you take Maximize Spell-Like Ability (eldritch blast), there is no benefit to hellrime blast. Hellrime Blast (a new invocation) produces a new spell-like ability.
A warlock’s invocations are spell-like abilities

Yes, you can take Natural Bond more than once. You just don't benefit by doing so.

Sudden metamagic feats work with Spell-Like Abilities; this is an exception to the usual rules. The reasoning for why sudden metamagic feats work with SLAs can't be extended past the specific cases in the rules. There may also be some cases where a non-sudden metamagic feat will work for a SLA; you'd need to find a specific rules statement for all such cases, just as there's a specific statement for sudden metamagic feats.

Unlike most Invocations, Hellrime Blast and other Eldritch Essences (and Blast Shapes) explicitly modify Eldritch Blast when used rather than being their own abilities. See pages 8-9 of Complete Arcane. By RAW the ability affected by each meta-SLA feat is selected at the time you take the feat, and the restriction on caster level is applied only at that time. When you use Hellrime Blast you are technically using Eldritch Blast modified by Hellrime Blast so the feat would still apply, and your caster level at the time relative to Hellrime Blast's level would be irrelevant.

Runestar
2010-01-27, 07:23 PM
The meta-SLA feats are limited by your spell lv, and less of caster lv.

So a 20th lv warlock would be able to apply an invocation of up to 6th lv to his eldritch blast and still quicken it.

rather than being their own abilities. No.

Example: Morthos, a 1st-level warlock, decides to make his eldritch blast attack into a frightful blast. Morthos’s eldritch blast is the equivalent of a 1st-level spell, while frightful blast is an effect equivalent to a 2nd-level spell. As the pages you reference state, the eldritch blast spell-like ability, when modified by another invocation, is a different SLA with a different name and different properties -- it's no longer an eldritch blast.

Certain spells with the [Light] or [Darkness] descriptors, such as Darkness or Daylight, mention how they interact with spells of the opposite flavor. Generally, it seems that the illumination (or lack thereof) created by the spell of higher level is in effect, and if the two effects are equal, then the natural lighting applies.

Is this rule ever explicitly generalized anywhere, or is it limited only to certain spell descriptions? If it is explicitly spelled out, in which book can it be found, and on what page?

Complete champion (CC) lets you swap out a domain for the corresponding devotion feat.

It also allows the inquisition domain to be the equivalent of knowledge domain for this purpose.

So between these 2 rulings, a cleric can swap out the inquisition domain for the knowledge devotion feat.

Considering there are undead with the fast healing ability, I sure hope not. :smallamused:

But if you want a definitive ruling, it is there in the undead type entry in the MM.

Cannot heal damage on its own if it has no Intelligence score, although it can be healed. Negative energy (such as an inflict spell) can heal undead creatures. The fast healing special quality works regardless of the creature’s Intelligence score.

This is probably a copy-and-paste error.

The spellstitched template first appeared in MM2, where its sr was 15+cha mod (thus giving sr18 on a ghast with 16cha).

In CA, the sr granted by said template was reduced to 10+cha mod for some reason, but the designers apparently forgot to correct the statblock or plain overlooked it altogether.

As for what the formula should be, I think it is better to base it off cr instead, since undead (especially the higher cr ones) are notoriously for having tons of HD (which usually translates into near-spell immunity).

PHB II mentions something close to it, in it's Rebuilding section. (PG 196). In the case of rebuilding, does Monstrous HD gained through a template qualify as a class level?

Q184
Using the feat, Improved Familiar, what are the limits to selecting another creature?
According to the DMG 3.5:

The list in the table above presents only a few possible improved familiars. Almost any creature of the same general size and power as those on the list makes a suitable familiar. Nor is the master's alignment the only possible categorization. For instance, improved familiars could be assigned by the master's creature type or subtype.
Q184a
All of the creatures on the list are ~2 HD under the master's level at that time. Would it be a fair judgment to say that any willing creature that is at least somewhat close to the master's type/alignment would be a viable familiar (provided it is at least 2 HD lower)? If not, what would be? 3 HD? 4HD?

Not that I am aware of. Class lvs tend to be more useful than racial HD, so allowing this would not be entirely fair.

I suppose that if you were desperate enough, you could get yourself level drained, voluntarily fail the fort save 24 hours later and lose your racial HD in the process...:smalltongue:

However, a monster's abilities tends to become worth less and less as it levels, so I do not think it unbalancing to allow you to replace a point of LA with a class lv every few lvs (how often is up to the DM's discretion).

Very few templates add racial HD; Lycanthrope (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/lycanthrope.htm) is one of the few that do. In any event, there are no rules for switching out racial HD for (much more versatile) class levels.

A 183a

With DM permission, race rebuilding (Player's Handbook II, page 198) could let you swap one race for another. This would let you complete a quest to allow you to swap out weretiger (6 racial HD) for wererat (1 racial HD), though you'll never be able to remove all racial HD.

The DM is the arbiter of what Improved Familiar will allow. Other than those specific creatures tabulated, it's all a matter of individual DM judgment.

Level Adjustment Reduction is determined by a formula based on your current LA and ECL. If you've got LA +1 at class level 3 you can buy that off then. If you subsequently acquire LA +2 before class level 6 you can also buy that off at class levels 6 and 9. There's a completely different schedule for LA +3 buyoff, so it makes a great deal of difference if your inherited LA +1 combines with a further acquired LA +2 before or after class level 3.

Spell Immunity can have no effect on Antimagic Field because the level of AF is too high. Assuming you're actually asking about Greater Spell Immunity, there is a very limited interaction. Greater Spell Immunity essentially makes spell resistance infinite against the designated spell. Antimagic Field does not have any provisos for SR except when interacting with summoned creatures. Thus you could cast both Greater Spell Immunity (Antimagic Field) and Antimagic Field, but would be unable to cast spells, nor would your magical equipment function. However, it would be impossible for someone to summon you with a spell; you would immediately wink out from the summoning area and return.

A character casts Mage's Magnificent Mansion and enters. Another creature outside the portal:

Q111a) Attempts to cast Dispel Magic on the Mansion via the door. Can they do this?
Q111b) If a creature can Dispel Magic the Mansion, what happens to the occupants?
Q111c) If a creature stands next to the entrance with an Antimagic Field on them, what happens?

As per the spell description:
Mage’s Magnificent Mansion
Conjuration (Creation)
Level: Sor/Wiz 7
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: Extradimensional mansion, up to three 10-ft. cubes/level (S)
Duration: 2 hours/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

You conjure up an extradimensional dwelling that has a single entrance on the plane from which the spell was cast. The entry point looks like a faint shimmering in the air that is 4 feet wide and 8 feet high. Only those you designate may enter the mansion, and the portal is shut and made invisible behind you when you enter. You may open it again from your own side at will. Once observers have passed beyond the entrance, they are in a magnificent foyer with numerous chambers beyond. The atmosphere is clean, fresh, and warm.

You can create any floor plan you desire to the limit of the spell’s effect. The place is furnished and contains sufficient foodstuffs to serve a nine-course banquet to a dozen people per caster level. A staff of near-transparent servants (as many as two per caster level), liveried and obedient, wait upon all who enter. The servants function as unseen servant spells except that they are visible and can go anywhere in the mansion.

Since the place can be entered only through its special portal, outside conditions do not affect the mansion, nor do conditions inside it pass to the plane beyond.
Focus

A miniature portal carved from ivory, a small piece of polished marble, and a tiny silver spoon (each item worth 5 gp).
...the spell creates an extra-dimensional dwelling with an invisible entrance. The spell does not give any information regarding what would happen upon spell duration. It must be assumed that nothing occurs to inhabitants upon the duration ending, though it would be reasonable that over prolonged exposure, they would eventually run out of air (several days later).

A111a Per Dispel Magic
"An inter-dimensional interface (such as a bag of holding) is temporarily closed." Dispel Magic would merely prevent object or people from entering, and POSSIBLY exiting (see below).
A111b The occupants remain inside, blissfully unaware of the events occurring outside, unless they choose to exit (see below).
A111c Anti-Magic Field is a more sticky spell, but per the spell, it merely suppresses the magic, but does not dispel it, meaning that, if anything, it would have a lesser effect than dispel. Furthermore, the spell SPECIFICALLY says, "outside conditions do not affect the mansion, nor do conditions inside it pass to the plane beyond".
(below) This would lead one to the conclusion that an anti-magic field does not suppress the mansion itself, only the entrance. Just like dispel, it would, effectively trap the occupants inside, unless escape could be found via other magical means.

A GM might also rule that only the entry to the mansion was dispelled, not the exit.

If you had clicked the link to the image of the battle titan in the post you linked, the URL has "mmiii" in it, indicating the Monster Manual III. Looking through the book confirms that.

Does the spell Girallon's Blessing let you use four weapons? It just states that you can't mix claw attacks and weapon attacks with the spell. If you can, I'm assuming Multiweapon Fighting would be a good feat choice if you intend to use this spell a lot, or persist it.

Q193 What other ways can a character gain multiple limbs?

Discussion on just this (http://www.enworld.org/forum/d-d-3rd-edition-rules/193822-extra-arms-template.html).

Off the top of my head: Insectile, abberant limbs.

Q194 If you are using point-buy and someone is playing as a construct or other race that has a "-" in a stat how is it handled? Do they get the normal amount of points and just spend it on 5 stats instead of 6?

Q194b

And what about rolling for stats, do you roll for 5 or 6 stats?

I guess if the answer to b is 6, then i would allow the points to be used for the other 5 abilities.
If the answer to b is 5, then it seems Warforged get an advantage simply because Point-Buy is used, as a DM i would force the player to put 2 points in Constitution, and even then it is an advantage.

Warforged get a bonus to Constitution--they don't get a -- like most constructs.

The question is relevant, but the rest of the post isn't, to be frank (no, not Frank ). This is RAW, not RAI or DM fiat.

Then good for you, you have 1 less stat to focus on.

I think the default without spending points is an 8, so treat the cost as an eight (i.e., no points spent).

What source do you need? Point buy essentially gives you a certain amount of stat points to distribute amongst your stats as you deem fit. If you have 5 or even 4 (if you get to play an incorporeal undead like a shadow), then you simply assign them amongst that many stats.

The closest I can find is libris mortis (page 34), which tells you to roll for con normally for an undead race, but treat it as not having a con score. Not sure what the point is.

Lacking a con score is not without drawbacks of its own (low hp, crap fort saves), so I don't see it as particularly overpowering.

Ah, well, i can see the point in that. It means you can roll 6 stats and put the worse in con (assuming that is how you assign abilities). If it said you are not allowed to roll for your con ability you would only have 5 rolls i suppose.

The wording seems to suggest that you roll for each stat in that order and are not allowed to switch them around, though I suppose yours is not an unreasonable interpretation.

Nor would I say no to anything which improves my odds of better stats. :smallamused:

Does the armor check penalty(ACP) reduction from mithril stack with the ACP reduction from magical armor?

Magic armor does not reduce ACP unless it is a specific enchantment that does so. (I'm assuming you mean enhancement bonus)

The ACP reduction for armor being magical comes from the need to be masterwork before it can be enchanted. Mithral must be masterworked so you would use the Mithral bonus to ACP.
