Random Banter

Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

New and improved, what a delicious new RB this is turning out to be.

[EDIT: Migrating the discussion since a new RB was created as I wrote.]

Watching a film from the '60s or so about the aftereffects of the nuclear war, with its subtle rebuke of those authority figures it places on screen to speak about "a just war" and "moral authority" and "learning to live with the nuclear bomb, but not to love it" amid the mortality projections, the facts and figures of burn radii. They haven't spoken to a single individual whose answer hasn't been small, or petty, or bloodthirsty, or dehumanized. It's a fine piece of propaganda but it demands the intelligence of the viewer to make the connections--it wouldn't have been widely viewed today, or seen as effective.

But the piece was made for its time, was it not? It has no need to remain relevant over time, as long as it was watched then.

My ear is attuned to its age, shall we say. When they say "weapons of nuclear power", I have been filling in "weapons of mass destruction". . .and the film remains relevant in its message. Styles of film-making change, though. The modern equivalent would probably be United 93, the informative/speculative mockumentary, without the soothing voice-over of authority yet with authentic scraps of multi-media evidence.

I went to bed at 12:10 and fell asleep by 12:20 (didn't sleep through the night because I never do, but it was still a victory).

And we've got slush on the ground and it is going to rain. Or that's what the waether report says - the sky looks bright bright blue to me!

And I had a yummy breakfast. One egg omelette with no cheese but a touch of imitation crab meat.

The end.

Interneted for a few hours then I went to bed before midnight too.

Rather predictable really.

I used the internet, watched the Twilight Zone marathon and went to bed.

The whole spectacle loses its mystique once you're staying up till 1:45 anyway. Also, once you get a good grasp on how time zones work, and can easily get in contact with someone for whom it's been a new decade for hours.

Mauvey, my browser was still loading the page when I hit the "post reply" button and instead of clicking on it I hit "report" at the bottom of your post. :smallamused: Good thing there's no automatic reporting system, huh?

I ate not much too much last night, to my surprise, but this morning made up for it with some apple twist bread just now which isn't very good (my mum bought it for some charity or cause thing or another, probably with my grandmother's church, because all the money we spend on bizarre baked goods seems to be for Grandma's church) but which smelled wonderful so I had to have a piece though I wasn't hungry after my egg. Ah, well.

The whole spectacle loses its mystique once you're staying up till 1:45 anyway. Also, once you get a good grasp on how time zones work, and can easily get in contact with someone for whom it's been a new decade for hours.

I send you messages from the future. About five hours in the future. Woooooo.

That was the noise a ghost makes at the end, but if you read it as the sort of party whoo that you make when you're partying on down then that's okay too.

Yeah. My last (and only) RB was #92, so I have to wait till #142. :smalltongue:

Heh... so it's actually only possible to have had two RB threads. Doesn't seem that much when you think of it like that.
It does seem like much when, taking the average post to be 50 words, and the average thread to be 1 500 posts, that means there have been 10 125 000 words of Random Banter.

The actual sun or the newspaper?

Oh, and I did very little for New Years except get called for brief drunken chats by The Boy who mostly just made me talk to the people he was with. Most of whom I've spoken to for all of 5mins previously. I turned my phone off and went to bed at midnight. I'm a crazy party person.

Had fun new years party with old friends and new. Got my new years kiss. Woke up with Chinese writing on my arm that my friend claims says I'm an, "intellectual." Little bit of a headache, a little dehydrated. But overall doing just ducky. Went over to my 'rents house today and came in to see my dad playing Dragon Age. XD

I do believe this is the fiftieth RB I've ever posted in. Happy Anniversary me!

The New Year was less interesting than most nights. I only really stayed up 'til half one; and that was just because I was reading a story.
Frankly, when one's stayed up past one or two o'clock for a significantly large number of nights staying up past midnight, even for a New Year and a New Decade is . . . uninteresting.

I'm also watching the repeat of part two of that Doctor Who special. Meh. There are cactus people. And the Time Lords look like Cardinals. Except some of them who have freakily large collar thingies.

Oh, did I mention cactus people? And how can an old WWII veteran intuitivey make leaps of logic that takes the Doctor quite a while?
Why are the cactus people neon-green?

Also also: do you have any idea how surprisingly hard and annoying a little brother is to ignore? Supposedly, he's watching this for the first time, but during every single action sequence so far he's talked his way through.
Despite my cynicism and general inclination to mockery today, this isn't that bad. And he insists on talking through every action sequence. Oh, and why is a Super-Advanced Ship Thingy possessed of lasers whose design and calibration seem to be very similar to that of WWII Hurricanes?
Planes are being shot down by lasers over the Bay of Biscay (I think) and he's talking about books. Normally, I wouldn't mind, but he's the one who decided to watch Doctor Who before his comics. :smallconfused: Buh.

Ow. :smallannoyed:

My one was something like that. Only not really. There was only five of us because no one showed up for some reason. After being getting bored of watching telly, we went out at about 10, bought alcohol, got drunk, counted down to midnight, then headbanged to Lordi for an hour. We then did a lot of walking through streets and forests and stood in a lift for a while because my friend decided to put random parts of costumes from Anime expos together. It was funny because some girls ran away from us. Then we walked out again a couple of miles and stood next to a lake in a forset with cups of tea. I remember arguing with someone pver whether or not Keyboards should be used in Metal.
It was epic.
However, much like yourself, I woke up the next afternoon at his house with a headache and sleep deprived. Only difference is, we continued the celebration regardless until about 6pm.

I really don't feel very good.

Awesome! I saw them...*looks down at Metallica shirt being worn*...January 18 of last year. Almost a whole year ago. It was a very good show. For many Metallica shows, there's a shirt specifically devoted to that one concert. For example, mine has the seal of Boston on it and the words "Boston, January 18, 2009." Apparently I am a master of disguising myself under sleeping bags and blankets. I was mistaken for two of the smallest girls at the party, and two people put together as well! It was awesome.

What was less awesome was the fact that the new years thing we watched showed about 10 minutes worth of "yay, its new years! Quick everyone make out!" and then there were three couples at the party all looking far too adorable and not alone unlike me :smallfrown:

I had something similar happen to me the other day. the clouds made a wall as far as my eyes could see. Spreading a blanket of cloud across the sky, I could see the line where it ended. Straight line of clouds all the way across my sky.

Ahhh today was excellent. I went sailing for the first time around three years (WAY too long). It had a jib (small, second sail placed in front of the main one), which not I, my father, or my little brother who doesn't actually know how to sail knew how to use. So we figured we'd figure it out once we were on the water.

The wind wasn't too great at first, and I was still wrapping my head around sailing, since it had been a while. After a while, though, it all rushed back into me, in the period of about thirty seconds. It was the best feeling ever.

A minute or so later, my brother and dad realised what just happened, and made fun of me and the salt water returning to my veins, and cutlasses, and landlubbers, and that sort of thing. Then the wind kicked up, and it got FUN.

Apparently my jibes (turning the ship around with the wind from one side, then to your back, then to your other side - the more advanced way of repositioning your ship in relation to the wind) were way too fast for my brother and dad. They weren't fond of my turn-on-a-dime, almost-capsizing-along-the-way manoeuvres. :smalltongue:

Then it started raining, so it got even more fun. By the time we headed back in, it was dumping, and it was fun.

Ahhh, I am spectacularly happy right now.

*Group hug.*

Yeah. Rude can be funny and I have actually TOLD some of my friends that. I think it has something to do with growing up with three brothers - that's how we interact. It's great fun.

(You do have to know when to stop sometimes. Like, the one thing I can never take is people making fun of my physical appearance because I'm insecure about it. But you can call me dumb and ditzy, I can laugh it off because I don't think it's true. :smallamused:)

There can only be one! If she became Curly, then she'd have to enter into a duel with the original one. The winner would hold the title of Goddess of the Written Word and Koorlithulu, and the loser would be erased from the very fabric of the universe. Seeing as the original and current Curly has more practice being Curly and utilizing the powers of the Goddess of the Written Word, the Curly Formerly Known as Dragonrider would be at a distinct disadvantage in this fight.

Edit: The fight would be, of course, an English-ing contest of some sort.

Because I'm afraid the pygmy elephant would be terrified of my Demon Cat and would flee in righteous terror causing a substantial amount of property damage and therefore being quite annoying?
I don't pay attention to reality.
I've already decided that when I get my own house (and I mean house, not a flat, or anything (although I might be willing to house share. If they agree with what I'm about to say) I will genuinely fill every room in the house with as many books as possible.
Say, three or four shelves in the bathroom - actually, boxes would be better because of the damp - and possibly boxes and shelves for the kitchen. And then it's straight up shelves and shelves and cases and cases and boxes and boxes of books in every other room.
But if I'm lucky enough to have a shed I think I'll leave that place book free. Unless I get into mending my own books. But in all reality, it would be far too damp and dangerous for the books. WOuldn't want to risk mildew or spots. And then there's dangers to the binding.

*blink*

I should stop rambling about my books.
Anyway!
Yes, that's on my List of Personal Wants. Along with several other things. Like a trip to Iceland. And one to Egypt.

I should ever work more on that constructed language of mine. Like, make some actual words and test to see how many mistakes have been made designing it.

anyways, I'm about to go insane. my great grandma came down from New York and has been staying at my house for the past week. I know I should be tolerant since she's 87 years old and hardly speaks any english (she speaks Sicilian, and my family is made up of either Northern Italians of Sicilians), but she's driving me crazy. she's completely taken over my bathroom and now it smells like old perfume, she wanders around the house looking for things that she left somewhere, and moves stuff around. and due to my partial obsessive need to keep things in spots where I left them, it annoys me to know end when stuff "magically" disappears. Normally she stays with my Aunt, but even she got fed up with dealing with her. on top of all this I have Exams to study for, and All-District Band Auditions next Saturday, and a whole bunch of other stressful things going on and just.... ughhhh... :smallyuk: :smallsigh:

As for my first name . . . six letters and zero vowels. (Well, there *is* a y that vaguely passes.) It has a higher batting average than my last name but still the odds are I'll get some bizarre mispronunciation. Combine this with being virtually un-nicknameable (I have lots of nicknames, some of which include my first name, but all of which make it longer), and things get wonky.

Cowboy Bebop. It's an anime that is recommended for almost everyone.

Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden) is like the Bourne Identity with humor. I liked this one a lot. In a sense, the action is like that of Death Note, in that there's not a lot of "action", but it can still hold your attention. I can't guarantee that you'll love it (it does have a few flaws, IMO), but it should be generally enjoyable.

Fixed that for you.

Ranma 1/2 or Slayers if you want something fun and not too serious but still actiony. Ranma 1/2 is martial arts romantic comedy (personally probably my favourite anime), Slayers is vaguely D&D-esque.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is good, but highly annoying occasionally. Also sometimes confusing. The ending especially.

You really think Phase would like Paranoia Agent? Hmm... Maybe.

Welcome to NHK is about Satou Tatsuhiro, a guy who dropped out of university three years ago and has been living as a hikikomori, that is, a complete shut-in who avoids going outside completely, ever since.

One day a girl comes along and says she can cure him of his hikikomori ways. He is understandably skeptical and the story goes from there.

I find it very relatable.

Possibly. No! It's Little Sister who's turning into a Miniature Thufir!
And I truly believe that my (extended) family is large enough to create a Playground microcosm.
The parents are clearly Mods. Mum would be Alarra because she makes great desserts; Dad would be . . . ummmm.

Not actually commenting on this, but DeeRee, I love your new avatar.

Animewise: my Elder Younger Brother has watched almost everything P_Z has recommended. Elder Younger Brother is also really cynical, slightly apathetic and has dark curly hair.
Just like P_Z (and avatar).

There can only be one.

Sound the drums of war. I am coming.

On anime:

The only anime that I have ever really liked was Death Note. Though there are a few that have been recommended that I haven't seen.

Two, counting Rutskarn.

Two, counting Rutskarn.

I told you already. He's my little brother from an alternate dimension. He's nowhere near as generally mean, callous or deranged as me.

And since he's both younger and less hateful that fits more than my evil twin. (An evil twin of an evil person is an evil evil person so the evils cancel.)

Thanks:  Said little brother is still sitting on the couch with me (we're running an Original Star Wars marathon) and while I was making it he commented, "She likes purple!" (Meaning the character in the avvie.) Yes, but I need to fix the flower, because right now it is sitting in an awkward place on her ear, which doesn't look like an ear at all.

[17:33:13] <Oni> Time's up! The answer was: green jacket grey pants

Wasn't I supposed to be your uncle or something at one point?

Ugh...back on the job hunt thing again. Thought I'd try to hold onto this one until the summer but right now the thought of that...yeah, no, I don't think that's going to work. Really wish I could just get over this.

You're our uncle because TwoBit is our father. :smalltongue:
