[4e] should the Polymorph be a familiar?

In one of the games I am playing the DM let my Druid find a shape changing Polymorph (think flubber) pet. The DM wants to make it, it's own race with stats and a PC sheet and it will gain levels. I am thinking that it should just be familiar.

So what do you guys think? Are there other solutions that I/we are missing?

Well, there's the beastmaster ranger's beast rules. You could base it on that.

Best way to keep it with interesting flavor but not increase the druid's power too much is to make it a familiar. If the DM really wants it to be like a npc with levels, though, I guess that's fine, but if it's level is more than 1 or 2 below the party, it will be at risk of dying a horrible death very easily.

DMG2 has a whole bunch of advice/numbers for making companion creatures. You should take a look at that if you have the chance.

Familiars in 4e are fairly weak. You can find information on them in the Arcane Power Manual.

Well the DM had a character sheet made up for the Polymorph, and "has something in mind" for the little guy. I don't know why but I am a little worried when a DM says I have something in mind.
