I will be Gamemastering a session in the near future where my player's will be fighting a character that used to be part of the party. While the character's shouldn't realize that their fighting one of their former comrades until the end of the encounter, I would like to play a piece of music during the encounter itself.

the music should rather obviously be sad, and preferably instrumental. Any Suggestions?

At the moment, the soundtrack of Hero comes to mind. Some very sad moments there.

The music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPngawdDa_c) at the end of the old Hulk TV series, where Bruce Banner is walking down the road.

There is no comparison. Especially at 2:52. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYIAfiVGluk)

Mozart's Requiem. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqkMbk8eX6Y#t=0m50s)

I think my work here is done.

Or maybe something from the (fantastic) BSG soundtrack:
Battlestar Sonatica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vcFFf9aa7k).

If you want something you can play during the fight too:
Gaeta's Lament. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff2GeDvjgtQ)

Samuel Barber's first Essay for Orchestra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RziM1ZfOI4k) seems pretty close to what you want. Moody, subtle, undertones of regret, and the modern style that most of us associate with cinematic music.

You know that song when Mario died in SMB1? Find a symphonic version...

I find Sorrowful Goodbye (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vor1zSgfY4) from the Okami Soundtrack to be rather bittersweet, if that's the feel you're going for.

Kind of - "Goodbye, and thanks for all the good times we had..."

I don't have a link for it, but the music from the beginning of Conan: The Barbarian. Specifically the parts when Thulsa Doom's army is riding through the snowy forest (you know, the part with the vocals). Very suspenseful.

Then after the enemy bites it and the party finds out who it was, you should play the sad music.

EDIT: Here it is. What is best in life? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUyOJc3V9Wk&feature=related) Look for it to start around 2:12.

I'm hijacking this thread since I have a similar question and don't feel like creating a new thread.

I like having music playing in the background of my games and soon one of the PC's will be forced (by the council of mages that he is a part of) to locate, capture and bring the rest of the PC's to trial (he does not realize he's doing this while locating them and will himself only find out when they read the "message" he's been ordered to bring them).

I'm looking for music that fits the betrayal/shock/capture (battle) feel of things.

I would suggest the music that was played when Commander Riker ordered to fire on the Borg Cube at the end of Season 3 of TNG. The first 10 seconds or so of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CN0fui9Nmg

As far as "battle" music, how about classics such as the scene where the Millenium Falcon fights the Tie Fighter ("Great kid, don't get cocky") or
Kirk vs. Spock (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyhhFzE5O5U)

It's overused in Hollywood, but Moonlight Sonata would work well.

I second Conan, Orphans of Doom/The Awakening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4SXng8EtF0) is also fitting imo.

There are some Babylon 5 episode soundtracks out there... the one for Z'ha'dum should have some appropriate tracks.
