See the tin? Read the tin.

For me I was struggling with making humans look decent in inkscape and went to finish Persona 3 and World Balance seemed like a simple enough thing to make (and more or less, it was).

I made it back when I first started here, and it's basically just me. Don't wear Hawaiian shirts as much anymore though. I'd probably make a new one, but I'm lazy and feel this has become somewhat iconic.

Also, my laptop hates the drawing software I have, which would make doing a new one really difficult.

Yes, that was a rather fun theme week (or rather, month) we had last March or April, as I recall. I think there's support for making it an annual event like Gender-Bent Week, but I'm not sure.

Because it's a stylized OotS version of me. DM, long hair, I actually own that cape, and wear it sometimes when I DM, my pi shirt used to be a sort of personal trademark (though it was really a hoodie, but that doesn't translate well), I own and use a machete, etc.

Used to be "cause it's awesome" for my old avvies. Man, I can't remember what my first long term avvie was. I had a zealot for a long time, then Jubal Early for a while (might've been the other way around?)...now it's Kairos, my character from a series of books I'm writing with a friend, and feels warranted. I've decided that all my avatars in the future, more or less, will be relevant to the Aviary books, so for now, I'm Kairos. Cave swiftlet.

Trog
2010-01-08, 01:23 AM
I had made the original Trog in OotS style as a paper counter for a DnD game I was planning to run after I had read that Rich originally began using stick figures for the same reason (before the comic) and I thought it sounded like a fun project to do on my own. Later, when I decided to join the forums, I needed an avatar so I decided I liked the Troglodyte one I made the best out of the ones I had and so I registered as Trog.

Original Avatar:
http://home.centurytel.net/jeffsjunk/avatars/Trog.gif

My current version of Trog was done for the winter. I wanted to have a Christmas-y version of him but decided that I'd get more mileage out of a winter one. Also he is done in Sinfest style not OotS.

I had just learnt how to make avatars in Paint. My first one was actually sort of alright. For some practice, I decided to make a Half-Orc Barbarian. I sat down, drew all the outlines, added Half-Orc features, then suddenly gave him a tie. Then I gave him glasses. I finished it off with a lightsabre, because what self-respecting nerd doesn't own a replica lightsabre? I fell in love with the character, and he has managed to go on to have four iterations, all different stylisticly (from left to right in my signature, the styles are: terrible, mildly less terrible plus shoulders, something bugs me and completely departed from OotS style). He has got progressively younger as the styles have moved on, owns a giant pencil and sleeps with a doll of himself.

All this would've been avoided if animated avatars were still allowed. I'd have used my standard one:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll78/De_ressurect/windowsfdanim.gif
Still doesn't really work with that one...

My avatar is of an American Football official, cause I'm an American Football Official IRL. Well, I'm only a football official during weekends, but it's easier to find someone to make a fotball official avatar than it is to find a tech support guy, and it's more original as well.

Right now, the avatar's on fire, though, for the ON FIRE! week.

Hm, well.

I had been switching through a lot of different avatars during my time here and never really got stuck with one.
But then I did a scene from "Reaper Man" by Terry Pratchett for our Local IA contest. And there I had to draw The Librarians head and part of his body - and I realised I liked that grin and "sacky" posture something awful.

So it is a character I liked, which turned out nicely and is different enough to stand out.

Current avy is dressed up as a roman senator for the WW game Rome (which unfortunately seems to have died/stalled).

My avatar is of a class-combination I found worked excellently whilst playing NWN2. He looks quite like me (Or, he does now that I've grown a goatee and cut my hair >.>) and he may, if I can find an avatarist who'll do it for me, end up slightly reminiscent of an older RP character of mine. ...I've sort of styled myself after my avatar, more than I've styled my avatar after me. ...Kinda sad.

Once I used that for a few weeks, I also realized it was instantly recognizable, and have only color avatars since then for two weeks at most. (When the OotS line art shirts were introduced, I was insufferable for a week.)

My first avatar was...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/macdonnell/ZohakAli.gif

He's called Zohak Ali and he's a villain in a children's book called The Magician of Samarkand.

I entered this into the Eastern themed Iron Avatarist contest. I was quite confident as there were only 4 entrants. (And they all sucked.) But I was quite surprised to find that my avatar was chosen for last place.

So obviously I'd clouded my own judgement somehow. And Inner Animal Week was coming up... So I turned him into a crocodile. Or maybe a Zohak Ali-gator.

And when people said they liked him better than the human version I stuck with him.

Edit: Ahem... embarrassing...

Ever since reading... maybe not The Hobbit, but certainly Fellowship, I've always liked dwarves - their concept of communal society is so different from our own.

Which is weird, because, in real life, I'm probably as far from the Lawful Neutral-lean-Good mentality of the dwarves as can be.

Also, dwarven cities are just, frankly, badass. Hewn from the earth itself, glittering crystals, a magma waterfall (convection and sulfur aside)... hell, even golems are a pretty dwarven concept.

When my previous one had been obsolete for a while, I decided to change it, and had just made a new D&D character. I wanted an avatar of that new character (who will be starting in about a week). I posted a request, but I tried my own hand at it out of a combination of impatience and trying to make a suitable base image for people to know what I'm talking about. When it eventually looked ok, I kept it, and received enough advice on it to make it look good. Having made it myself, I think I'm a bit more critical of it than I otherwise would be, but I've always got the file on hand for when/if I find more things I can do to fix it up more.

The character is Cedarsting the Glowswarm. His data:

GP: 3600

Personality:
Hates aberrations, but is otherwise balance-minded. Except when fighting... Then he savors the violence. Usually uses Aspect of the Destroyer. Aspect has some slight effect on personality:

Aspect of the Ancients - A little more cautious
Aspect of the Destroyer - A little more aggressive
Aspect of the Hunter - A little more secretive

Appearance:
Cedarsting has green needles like a cedar tree in the summer with a contrasting brown bark. He wild shapes into a swarm of fey insects that glow brighter than fireflies and sting like bees. He always uses the plural to speak of himself and occasionally calls himself "The Glowswarm" as a sort of title.

Background:
Cedarsting had always been told as a sapling that Wilden came about to defend the Feywild and Natural world from the aberrations and madness of the Far Realm, but hadn't really believed that until he came across one of the places in the world where one could "look outside" (that is, to glimpse upon the Far Realm and tempt oneself of madness.) Being curious, Cedarsting took a quick glimpse.

After several days of meditation in the forest, Cedarsting's mind was not brought into madness, but he understood the need to fight to protect the Feywild and Natural world. He learned to channel the power of the primal spirits to become what he calls The Glowswarm, a swarm of brightly glowing insects who's light is soothing to his friends and who's stingers are painful to his foes.

Well, basically, it was my first attempt at an OotS-style avatar. It's a mix of myself (there are many things in there that are me, including the huge sword), my own homebrewed amphibian species, and a touch of D&D , as I made my avatar as to show a fighter/wizard multiclassed character.

I have been drawing an updated version closer to true OotS-style, and I might change my avatar shortly.

(I've been practicing, you can look at my signature, where I went wild.)

My avatar's my character, Soterion the Black, half-fiend paladin of Hextor. He looks durn snappy in his waistcoat and frock ensemble (no cravat, 'cause he's stylish like that). His Cuban heels didn't come out quite right, though. He doesn't wear armor because armor is for the weak.

My other option was to put up an avatar of Ned Ugsome, bard/barbarian and punk lutist, but I felt like Soterion was a better fit.

Huh? What? Sorta spaced out there for a minute. Sorry about that, got this really weird feeling all of a sudden. :smallconfused:

Anyhoo, I'm a bit of an ephemeral type and the idea of the master of masks sort of clicked with me in a way that meant I wanted to grossly reenvision it as something involving many, many more types of masks getting incorporated into its nature. I've since decided to try to incorporate the theme weeks into the mask scheme idea in order to subtly increase the number of masks.

This particular avatar is for the ON FIRE week, and, well, I had been dealing with books a lot at the time and somehow bookburning came up in regards to some IRL/political drama and so that's what I requested for the mask of my immolating self.
