View Full Version : Sewing!

I've recently dived into the world of sewing... as of october I never touched a needle and thread for any serious project. That was until halloween was fast approaching and I felt a intense desire to make something. Being a simple guy, I'd usually just mix-and-match some random clothes and be a ninja or something. But this time I thought, I want a hat. In fact, I want a pikachu hat!

But also being a cheapskate, I wasn't going to buy a hat online, those are for....you know, rich dudes. Besides I don't have a credit card and online is a rather complicated business. So deviantart led me to a tutorial to making fleece hats! Long story short, I made eleven hats so far. (Only ten shown, the other one is well, a failed sandshrew...)

It's actually quite easy, while time-consuming. Purely by hand, my first pikachu hat took 12 hours from fabric to finish. (No experience whatsoever) A sewing machine cuts off a few hours to about 6. Then the whole "look at it and admire" part adds another hour or two. I spend a lot of time handsewing the smaller parts like the eyes and that takes a good chunk of the time as well.

One of the more satisfying parts? The fabric cost less than $3 for each hat! Beat that amazon.

Anyone else sew in the playground?

Awwwww! They're great

I just gave my baby nephew's fantasy mobile to my sister. She seemed to like it a lot. Forgot to get a picture of it first, though... I'll ask her to take one of it, and maybe of the night/day blankie-pillow, two terry cats and towel platypus I made them.
Next on the list: a leopard fur terry cat for my other nephew.

Wait, do you make stuffed animals/plushies? I have a desire for premade patterns, because I have to do trial and error for all of my hats... still experimenting with designs.

Yep. I used premade patterns for the platypus (really good, looks just like a real platy), the terry cats, and the phoenixes (used an easy and cute perching bird pattern, and added wings), and made stuff up for the blankie-pillow and dragons.

Wow Mr. Saturn! Those are pretty cool hats! You should so sell them on the internet (like eBay or something). I'm pretty sure people would be willing to pay at least 10-20$ for these!

Yeah. I have a HUGE hat collection (it's like a hobby, owning a fancy hat collection, and it's pretty cool to try to add hat every single kind of hat), and a Jigglypuff hat is one I DEFINETELY would pay to add to it. It's one of my favourite fighters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Even though wearing a Jigglypuff hat to school would probably make people thing I'm homosexual or insane. Not that there is anything wrong with those, but it's not exactly something I would like to have people think about me.

Still, what do I care what people think of me?

My sister, mother, and - most importantly! - my baby nephew all like my fantasy mobile =3 The latter will lie there staring up at it for ages...

@Onasuma: I guess I should create a paypal account for such occasions...

@Serpentine: Ummm, what's a fantasy mobile? Google search didn't bring up anything useful... Besides, post pictures! I'm all alone. :smallfrown:

And since winter break ended, I don't really have much time to make any new hats. Maybe I'll finish my projects this weekend.

A fantasy mobile, is in fact, a mobile with a fantasy theme.

Popular with parents of young children, as you can hang it above a crib/bed, and they can watch the pretty boats/kitties/dragons spin around.

Also, nice hats. I always like homemade things: they have a nice feel to them, and it's good to be able to spend time making things.

I've tried sewing... I just can't. I don't know why.
I had the same problem with crochet, it's like my brain can't process it. I'll do everything it says and then it will come undone, or the part they said to leave for turning inside out is too small and it tears when I try, or the parts aren't aligned like they should...

I do knit dolls so I do some amount of sewing with them, but it's different. For one things, it doesn't leave big holes when I decide "I'll actually sew from point B, not point A" and move my needle.
Plus, I don't need to cut anything and draw patterns and stuff, which I suspect might be when I make most mistakes.

Congrats though, it really looks great, and it sounds like it was fast (I can't imagine managing to knit anything whatsoever in only 12 hours).

As above, it's a dangly thing hung over cribs (or just used as decoration wherever), my fantasy one specifically with dragons and phoenixes.

Holy crap. Awesome hats!

If you start making more of these, I know I'd definitely buy some for my friends for their birthdays or Christmas. Silly hats + pokemon = WIN.

I was also thinking about making kits for people to make their own hats. Since I know some people like the satisfaction of making their own things, I could just cut out all the pieces and illustrate some instructions to make it on your own.

I'd charge less and I won't have to go through as much labor. HAND SEWING WORKS I TELL YOU! It's a nice time to chat with your friends or listen to some music/lectures/audiobooks. That's what I do. Although it's nice to have a sewing machine. But hand-sewing really doesn't take much skill; I had none when I started and made a pikachu hat.

On another note, I feel like making costumes now. I've always dreamed of having a hooded robe/cloak. And they are always so expensive. Instructables.com is my new best friend. When I have time...

Well, the mobile's a success - whenever Alexander's sooking and not going to sleep, they come in and knock it so it spins a bit, and he'll settle down. So's the "leopard" terry cat I made for my other nephew, except that its head came out kinda stoopid. Now, my boyfriend wants a sackboy. I can only find one sewing pattern, but it's not very good. Anyone have any idea where I could find one, or wanna make one for me?

I'm still hung up back on "what's a sackboy?"

Someone needs to propagate Australian terms so Serpentine doesn't require footnotes.

Serpentine

Not an Australian term :smalltongue: It's the character from the Little Big Planet game. I eventually bought the pattern for this:

In the game itself, he looks like this:

A free pattern maker (http://www.wildginger.com/products/wildthings.htm) for simple hats, slippers, and other goodies!

For all those people who can't ever find a hat to fit their head, look no further! The program seems to have no limit on head circumference (though, of course, the pattern pieces deform if you go beyond hypercephalic head measurements). It does assume you know how to assemble the pieces--no instructions are provided in this free program--but instructions are easier to find than patterns.

. . .man, could I have stood to find this slipper-making pattern awhile ago. Would've saved me trying to copy some very worn and lopsided ones.

I just have to say this before anyone else can:

But on a more serious note those hats are awesome.

I'm sorry I can't update the thread. I haven't touched my sewing machine for a month now. :smallfrown:

@Nevitan: Really? I didn't really like the colors that I had. But I suppose I can call it a shiny caterpie. XD

@Quincunx: Hey thanks! I would probably use that during the summer.

Once I figured out how to work a sewing machine I will make a hand puppet. But not like a sock puppet or something, Im actually going to try something real, like muppets-style. Well probably not the quality, but you know what i mean.

All i still need as materials is some foam to stuff the head with and some hair.

I could not ask that. And fifteen hours worth of work seems expensive. Although, it is soooo nice and would look so comfy and warm on my normally bald head...

Hmm...

How much would you want for one? I can offer to both straight out pay for it (Paypal would be preferred), or get you gaming merchandise online (having it shipped straight to you saves on shipping for me).
