The air surrounding you fairly hums with the residue of magic, an aftereffect of the spell that brought you to this place. A quick glance reveals that you are in a small room, devoid of any life save for yourself. The sound of dripping water can be heard faintly, and the stone walls are slick with moisture. In complete defiance of logic, a torch is already lit, resting in a sconce near the room's single door.

There is a door at C-4, south side.

I'll pull out my 10ft pole and attempt to set off any traps that might be on the door. After that, I'll pull a copper coin out of my belt pouch, invoke Darkness on it, and put it back in the pouch.

Then I'll attempt to open the door.

No traps. What are your vision modes?

The hall goes east (probably beyond sight) and south.

East: 10ft into the hall there is a split north and south. 20ft beyond that there is a door on the northern side.

South: 20ft down there is a split east. 10ft beyond the hall is T-ing east and west.

theterran
2010-01-12, 07:26 AM
Normal Vision / Darkvision 60ft.

I'll head east, then north to the door, checking for tripwires and pressure plates along the floor with my 10ft pole.

At the door I'll check the door for traps using the pole.

Once it's clear of traps, I'll Cast Mage Armor on myself. Then I'll step back 10ft, cast Mage Hand, and use Mage Hand to open the door.

Sliver

The door is at the eastern hall, northern side.

At the split the hall goes 20ft north before turning east, and south 20ft before turning west. 15ft down the southern hall is a door at the eastern side.

Your poking reveals a pit 10ft beyond the split.

theterran
2010-01-12, 07:32 AM
Is the pit on the northern split or the southern split?

Better?

theterran
2010-01-12, 07:40 AM
So much better!

So I didn't actually Cast Mage Armor or Mage Hand yet...

At the split just before the pit. I'll head south, checking for traps and such with the pole, and check that door with the pole for traps.

Then, standing 10ft back, I'll Cast Mage Hand to open the door.

Sliver
2010-01-12, 07:42 AM
Right beyond the split south another pit is revealed..

theterran
2010-01-12, 07:54 AM
Bah!

Fine, I'll take the northern split then...checking the floor for tripwires, pits, and pressure plates...

(Why do I get the feeling there's going to be another pit...)

Sliver
2010-01-12, 07:59 AM
Fear the DC10 (with no running start) Jump check!

After turning east, the hall goes 10ft then turns north for 10ft before T-ing.

To the west it goes for 20 and 30ft before splitting and turning north (ends there)

To the east it goes 20ft before splitting north, another 10ft before having a door on the southern side, and another 20ft before turning south. At the turn is a door on the northern side.

theterran
2010-01-12, 08:05 AM
I'll try going east, toward the door on the southern side, always checking for traps and such...

I'll wait and see if I can actually make it to the door before I post anything else!

Sliver
2010-01-12, 08:14 AM
10ft down the hall the floor falls again. You really fear crossing pits huh?

theterran
2010-01-12, 08:25 AM
My Jump check is -2, and with my luck with dice...well...let's just say i'd fall... :smallfrown:

I'll take the North split and see where that takes me...checking for traps as I go.

Sliver
2010-01-12, 08:30 AM
So you go back and west to the first northern split?

theterran
2010-01-12, 08:36 AM
You know what..

I'm going all the way back to the beginning and taking that south route.

Sliver
2010-01-12, 08:38 AM
Sure, I assume you are poking 10ft ahead of you all the time so..

5ft before the first split you trigger an acid trap, targets your FF touch ac:

[roll0]
[roll1]

theterran
2010-01-12, 08:40 AM
ouch :smallannoyed:

Before I go any further, I'm casting Mage Armor...

Then, I'll continue on...poking as I go...

Sliver
2010-01-12, 08:44 AM
You reach the split. It goes east for 40ft before turning north. 35ft in there is a door on the northern side with what looks like a bullseye painted on the floor in front of it. To the west it goes 10ft before turning south.

theterran
2010-01-12, 08:46 AM
I'll head west and south. still check for traps w/ my pole...

Sliver
2010-01-12, 08:49 AM
It goes south for 10ft and turns east. It goes east beyond sight. Before even stepping into the hall, another acid trap is triggered (FF, touch.. Which doesn't care for mage armor)

[roll0]
[roll1]

theterran
2010-01-12, 08:50 AM
...

How am I missing these traps? My pole not working?

(not doubting that I'm missing them...I just wanna know how )

Sliver
2010-01-12, 08:56 AM
I don't know, maybe it is because a wizard did it.. (acid splash traps, ya know..)

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:00 AM
Dirty wizards...

Anyway...I'll continue on...with my pole...

Sliver
2010-01-12, 09:04 AM
35ft into the hall you discover a pit. You see a door on the northern side 30ft beyond the pit.

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:09 AM
Alright, I'll head back to the door with the bullseye on it...checking with my pole as I go...

Sliver
2010-01-12, 09:11 AM
As you poke the bullseye, it rains gold! Nothing happen, you reach the door.

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:22 AM
I'll back up 10ft, pull out my copper coin, invoke darkness on it again, and put it back in the pouch.

Then I'll use a swift action to "Blend into Shadows"
[roll0]

Then cast Mage Hand to open the door from 10ft back.

(edit) Will that order work for what I'm attempting, or do I need to open the door before hiding?

Sliver
2010-01-12, 09:27 AM
Hiding hardly matters, as you don't have LoS into anything in the room and don't see anything that is in the room..

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:29 AM
Hiding hardly matters, as you don't have LoS into anything in the room and don't see anything that is in the room..

Well...how was I supposed to know there wasn't something on the otherside of the door :smalltongue:

Besides, I just wanted to try out my HiPS before I die :smallwink:

Sliver
2010-01-12, 09:30 AM
So you just stand there, hiding after you opened the door, or you do something? :smalltongue: (or wait)

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:32 AM
I'll slowly move forward toward the door and into the room (half speed).

[roll0]
[roll1]

Sliver
2010-01-12, 09:34 AM
If you move into the room you can't make a hide check, because you don't have cover against w/e it is in the room.. Do you still do it?

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:42 AM
alright...hang on...

I guess I should get your ruling on this before we go forward.

The feat Blend into Shadows allows me to make a hide check as a swift action, even if being observed, as long as I'm within 10ft of Magical Darkness (hence the darkness coin in my pouch). Now technically I'm within 10ft of magical darkness, even though the enimation is blocked by the pouch so the darkness is not visible, which really give me HiPS...

Now, do you agree with the above or are you of the mind that the darkness has to be visible? (If so, I can pull the coin out of my pouch).

For reference, Blend into Shadows is in Drow of the Underdark.

Sliver
2010-01-12, 09:48 AM
There has to be a LoE between you and the darkness..

Well, walking inside reveals the following room:
{table]|A_|B_|C_|D_|E_
1|||||
2||H|||
3|||||
4||||B|[/table]
There is a door at A-2, which you are just outside of, another at E-4, south side and another at E-3. There is a human wearing a chain shirt and holding a longsword standing behind a beast with patchy dark fur that covers its unhealthy shrunken black skin in some places. Open sores dot its hide and a feral, catlike head glances with it's blank eyes at the wall in front of it.
It doesn't see you.

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:49 AM
Ok, if there has to be LoE, I'll pull the coin out of my pocket so I have LoE and move in that way.

So I get a surprise round? :smalleek:

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:54 AM
Assuming this is a surprise round.

I'll move into A2, and unleash a 30ft cone of Cold, catching both of them.
Cold [roll0] - Reflex Halves, DC16

Doing this make me become visible. While I'm visible I will drop the coin in A2, then take a swift action to hide again.
[roll1]

Sliver
2010-01-12, 09:56 AM
Oh darn.. Didn't change (copy pasted from file..) You are at E4 south.. Changes anything? (don't reroll if not)

theterran
2010-01-12, 09:58 AM
Crap...I'm next to the beast? I guess I'll keep it the same...though I probably should have Color sprayed instead...:smallconfused:

Sliver
2010-01-12, 10:03 AM
[roll0]

The beast vanishes as soon as you breath on it, and the man quickly reacts with a color spray at the area of the opened door, as you didn't move after hiding, Will save.

theterran
2010-01-12, 10:06 AM
no initiative? :smalltongue:

Anyway.

[roll0]

Sliver
2010-01-12, 10:07 AM
Ready action.. Can you use swift actions in a surprise round?

Initiative: [roll0]

(you saved)

theterran
2010-01-12, 10:09 AM
I have no idea...I've never actually used a surprise round before:smallsmile:

[roll0]

theterran
2010-01-12, 10:13 AM
Alright, the coin is on the floor in E4 (since that's where I was)

Eldritch Blast him (hopefully) FF Touch
[roll0]
[roll1]

Swift to Hide
[roll2]
and then move at half speed to E2.
[roll3]

Sliver
2010-01-12, 10:22 AM
Hit.

[roll0] if he beats your MS he catches you in a color spray, else he assumes you are at the same position.

theterran
2010-01-12, 10:27 AM
Alright, so Listen fails, what's he doin'?

Sliver
2010-01-12, 10:31 AM
.. Assumes you didn't move and color sprays same area, not catching you in it....

theterran
2010-01-12, 10:34 AM
Sweet.

I'll unleash another cone of cold

[roll0] Ref DC 16 Halves.

Then Hide as a swift
[roll1]

Then move at half speed to C4
[roll2]

Sliver
2010-01-12, 10:36 AM
He falls.. 150xp, chain shirt, longsword.

theterran
2010-01-12, 10:43 AM
Sweet...are we allowed to sell stuff to the vendors on the levels?

And if I leave it, can I come back and get it later (like after I clear the level, assuming I can) as this stuff will weigh me down (having an Str of 6 is a pain!)

Sliver
2010-01-12, 10:47 AM
You can sell it in the vending machines at the end of the level, I don't know if random encounters don't take the loot.

theterran
2010-01-12, 10:52 AM
I need a bad of holding or something...:smallannoyed:

I guess I'll take it along.

I'll move to the A2 door, test it for any traps, and continue on.

Sliver
2010-01-12, 11:11 AM
It opens to the hall south of the pit in the intersection..

theterran
2010-01-12, 11:34 AM
Alright, I guess my next question...is there any way that I have yet to go that doesn't involve jumping a pit?

Sliver
2010-01-12, 12:19 PM
At the T intersection to the north of the starting room there is a way west without a detected pit (the one with 2 turns north, 10ft apart)

theterran
2010-01-12, 12:32 PM
Lets head that way then...
(I assume you know where as I'm completely lost )

Testing with my 10ft pole as I go.

Sliver
2010-01-12, 12:41 PM
First or second turn?

theterran
2010-01-12, 12:42 PM
Well try the first turn first..:smalleek:

Sliver
2010-01-12, 12:45 PM
[roll0] +8, forgot the bonus..
[roll1]

You continue?

theterran
2010-01-12, 12:47 PM
sure, why not...

(I think my next character will have the search ability to find magical traps!)

Sliver
2010-01-12, 12:49 PM
It turns east and has a door, and turns north, then west. I won't give you the actual distances because you have no idea where are you so I will just give you a map later..

theterran
2010-01-12, 12:52 PM
I'll test the floor out up to the door, then test the door with the pole. Assuming everything is good to go. I'll pull my coin out, invoke darkness on it, cast mage hand to open the door from 10ft away.

Swift Action to hide and slowly move toward the door.

[roll0]
[roll1]

Sliver
2010-01-12, 12:56 PM
A humanoid figure, with wrinkled gray skin and claws, crouches low on the floor.

{table]|A|B|C|D|E|F
1||||||
2||||||
3||||||
4||||||[/table]

Doors are at A3 (which you are outside of) and F4 south.

[roll0]
[roll1]

theterran
2010-01-12, 12:58 PM
Well...he can hear me...:smallsigh:

Sliver
2010-01-12, 01:01 PM
He seems to ready an action..

theterran
2010-01-12, 01:06 PM
what square is he in?

Sliver
2010-01-12, 01:08 PM
Oh:smallredface: C3

theterran
2010-01-12, 01:13 PM
In A3, I'll cast Color Spray at him. (DC16)

then swift hide again.
[roll0]

Sliver
2010-01-12, 01:17 PM
As you cast the spell, he charges you (partial charge)

[roll0]
[roll1]

If you manage to cast the spell: [roll2]

theterran
2010-01-12, 01:18 PM
And I die...:smallsigh:

Those dumb traps did me in...

Back to the drawing board I guess...
