I'm trying to compile a useful, cumulative list of ways for an individual to escape detection, primarily for informative purposes.

LIST:
1.Invisibility (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/invisibility.htm): Obvious spell is obvious. Lump Mass Invisibility (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/invisibilityMass.htm) and Invisibility Sphere (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/invisibilitySphere.htm) into this heading.

2.Silence (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/silence.htm): Clanking around in invisible plate mail is of limited utility against creatures with more than one functioning sensory input source.

3.Greater Invisibility (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/invisibilityGreater.htm): In case you need to start thwacking the mooks who can't see you. Y'know, for laughs.

4. Darkstalker (LoM): For those few corner-case instances when your opponent has Scent or Blindsense and such. For instance, roughly 90% of foes above level 6.

Nondetection (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/nondetection.htm)

Mind Blank (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/mindBlank.htm)

Come to think of it, isn't this half the shtick of the Abjuration school?

Etherealness. Not only are you invisible (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0025.html), but you're also intangible.

Sculpt Sound (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/sculptSound.htm) is a bit more flexible than Silence, so could be more useful in some cases (in particular the zone of silence that accompanies you when using a Silence spell might occasion suspicion if you needed to get close to someone). It's Bard-only, though.

Illithid Slayer level 6, for immunity to every device, power or spell that reveals location except Metafaculty.

Martial Study (Cloak of Deception) for hide as a class skill and bursts of Greater Invisibility.

Blindness/Deafness, for a more proactive form of invisibility.

Shadow Creature template: total concealment anywhere except in full sunlight. So you don't have to waste actions hiding.

Fiends of Possession can hide inside objects, among other nasty things. Plus they just have Ethereality they can turn on and off at will, so.

Bluff/Suggestion can duplicate "These are not the droids you are looking for," which can do in a pinch.

The Insidious Spell feat/Insidious Illusions class feature from the Gnomish Illusionist RSL that negates True Seeing/See Invisibility after an opposed CL check are very nice for this purpose.

...with Glibness on the top of the cake.

Spider Climb allows you to sneak in and out from high windows.

Dimension Door is a great for quickly teleporting to safety if you hear someone coming.

Silent Image is great. Create an illusory piece of furniture or bush in front of you as a hiding place.

Disguise Self goes without saying.

Cast silent Alarm spells behind you to alert you if any guards are coming.

Unseen Servant is useful for theft. Don't enter the trapped guarded room, have the servant invisibly glide in. Or if you're being cornered have it go around the corner and knock something over as a distraction.

Expeditious Retreat is handy to move faster than guards and patrols.

Cat's Grace boosts all your sneaky dex based skills.

Darkvision allows you to explore areas without carrying a light.

Clairvoyance/all scrying spells obviously.

Reduce Person will boost your hide check.

Summon Monster spells to create a distraction.

You've really got no shortage of options.

Dust of Disappearance, which is both core and gives you pretty hard-to-beat invisibility, but has a brutal nerf in the form of an incredibly short random duration (although it used to be 2d10 minutes, which is downright broken).

Dust of Tracelessness makes you hard to track and also makes rooms seem abandoned.

The Even More Hidden Book (http://www.giantitp.com/articles/LQrUU7ApBttgaXkOzts.html) by The Giant himself, if you're willing to allow online sources.

Ethereal Jaunt (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/etherealJaunt.htm). If you want to access it without magic, the Shedu Crown soulmeld bound to Heart Chakra (Incarnate 16, Totemist 17) gives it to you as well. The Displacer Mantle, Shadow Mantle, Worg Pelt, Kruthik Claws, and Unicorn Horn can each give bonuses to Hide and/or Move Silently when you invest essentia in them.

Also, there's the Adept of Darkness (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57352) trick. If you have the ability to produce Darkness as a spell-like ability (Drow, Warlocks, Dragonfire Adepts, and IIRC a few PrC) then you qualify for the Blend into Shadows feat (Drow of the Underdark) which allows you to make a Hide check as a Swift Action, even while being observed. It's essentially Hide in Plain Site, available at level 1.

Ring of Dark-Hidden (Magic Item Compendium)+No Light (cantrip, BoVD)=Invisibility to everything with Darkvision (AKA 90% of the MM).
