If you think about it, that is a fairly large amount of people, anyway, if this site is right, the majority of us are 18-24 year old males who post from school. :smallconfused: .....I doubt it could be more wrong.

That sounds pretty accurate. GitP is a Google Rank 5 page.

I don't post from school, neither was I 18 when I started here.

I'm seventeen, and I never post from school. In fact, I very rarely use the computers at school, unless we're supposed to for an assignment.

It doesn't say that it's a majority, BTW. It says that those groups are overrepresented compared to the general internet population.

It might also be counting "from school" as from a school network, if people are browsing in dorms, say.

Same here. Maybe I should rebel against being a rebel and conform.

I think I saw some where on this forum The Giant saying that "he wished" this was correct :smalltongue:

That would give GitP ~300,000 viewers. That seems possible to me, if considerably higher than I'd expect.

If anything, Alexa usually underrates, due to the increasingly widespread use of browsers that don't auto-install the spyware it uses to gather its data.

I post from school, because it's the only forum my school doesn't block ^^

And I'm 17 (or close enough to), and female.

I think it's actually closer to 500,000, and Rich has said at one point it's in the strong 6 figures. Questionable Content webcomic is ~300,000 for comparison.

There's a good rule of thumb for the forums of a site. About 10% will look at it/register, 10% of that will bother to post, and about 10% of that will post semi-regularly, and 10% of that group will account for a good percentage of the posts.

The Giant has said that he gets around 300,000 viewers. 150,000 check daily, and 150,000 check regularly, as in every week or every other week or so.

that's 3 in every 20,000 people.

stats say we have 41K members...

which puts us at about 274,000 people. I don't know how many people read oots but arent on the forums, though, nor do I know how many people use the internet.

if this site is right, the majority of us are 18-24 year old males who post from school. :smallconfused: .....I doubt it could be more wrong.Note, however, that the posted demographics don't even mention those under 18 years of age, so, in my estimation, the largest percentage of posters aren't even represented on the age demographic chart.

It is true that there are a lot of students on this forum (not bad thing at all) and the majority is male so...could be.
The exact figure is another question but we do cover a lot of countries in here!

I'd again like to point out that the statistics also only show whether groups are overrepresented or underrepresented compared to "average internet users", not how many there are or even what fraction there are. Say people posting from school make up 1% in general, but here make up 2%. That would show the way it's displayed on the site, as massively posting from school.

People.... Alexa.com only tracks statistics from internet users who have the Alexa Toolbar installed in their browsers. There's no possible way for them to ever get any kind of "average internet user" statistics into their database. The ONLY people who contribute any kind of statistics data into the Alexa index are the people who have installed the Alexa Toolbar into their browsers and actively use it.

Who are the people who go to the trouble of having Alexa Toolbar installed into their browsers in order to contribute data? Well, you probably know them by several names, which I will not mention for fear of running afoul of forum rules. But yes, let's just say they are, by an extreme majority, males who are 15-30 years old, still in school/college, and very focused on computers and technology.

So yeah, one can clearly conclude that trying to interpret the Alexa index in order to get any kind of information that doesn't apply to this specific group of technology-minded young males is a complete waste of time. Never mind trying to pretend that it gives any kind of insight into the "average internet user". It doesn't. It caters specifically and exclusively to that particular group of users, and has never pretended to do anything else.

You know, there are incredibly simple ways around those filters. Heck, once it bled down, even the people who were barely able to use a computer could get on MySpace (back when you still needed a school email to get on Facebook)

Keep in mind this is probably mostly due to the comic, not the forum. So while we only have about 40,000 forum members, the amount of viewers is probably much, much more.

Glad I'm not the only one over 25.. was getting concerned until some of you (us?) chipped in there.. though you can tell from a lot of posts there are many many students on here, you can also find also people with real jobs.

Sighs... as I got made redundant recently I'm neither...

32 - male, both work and home.

As for the Alexa comments, yes it is skewed slightly in the "average" sense of the word, but one could argue that the 0.015 is valid, as most statistics are made up of samples of the population (see US Census), so in taking a sample of the population due to it's user-base, one could extrapulate similar results. :smalltongue:

I dont have a fixed posting place. I fit in the age and gender group though.

It's quite posible that this site has that much traffic, a couple of friends roams the forums while not beign users, pretty much every DnD related google search I've ever made led me to either the wizards forum or GitP.
Pretty much every roleplayer I know knows about GitP. So, if you consider all those gamers then the traffic number makes a lot of sense.

I don't know how many people read oots but arent on the forums, though, nor do I know how many people use the internet.

I think I recall Giant saying that 15% of the site's visitors are on the forum. He was moderating/enflaming/trying to end some kind of debate on whether or or not the traffic in the SMBG section was causing all the site lag back in the day.

And he said it didn't. Because only 15% of the people who read the comic visit the forums.
