Hello all.
This thread was designed by Lucky originally for the purposes of coordinating and maintaining all the werewolf games and variants. It has become a great tool for us. This is where you come to place a claim on running your own Werewolves or Werewolves variant game. It can also be used to develop ideas and gather interest for your own version of the game.
Whatever you're looking for in regards to werewolf games should be found on this page.
Maybe not in this post, but somewhere on this first page.
Everything from start dates to active games, rules (and optional rules) to games archives can be found here along with tools designed to make your game run smoother.
If there’s something useful you think is missing, mention it. We will immediately eventually spring lurch into action to sort it out.

--Playing--

--How Players Should Use This Thread-- If you need to check the basic rules, they are in this post.
If you have a query about the general/basic rules, this is the place to ask. Questions about a specific edition/variant should be directed to the narrator.
If you want to know when a certain game is starting, the schedule is in the second post.
If someone mentions a past game which interests you, someone here may well remember it and be willing to elaborate. Or, you can check the archives.

--Basic Game-Play Overview--The game is played in turns that consist of two different phases.
There's a day phase that happens from dawn ‘til dusk in game. This period typically lasts 48 hours. During this time all the players try to decide who the bad guys are by voting for them. Votes are done in red text. You may change your vote if you wish, in which case, you should edit your previous post and strike-through your previous vote. Once the day has ended, whoever has the most votes is removed from the game (Lynched). In the event of a tie, common practice is to lynch whichever player reached that number of votes first.

The 25% Rule: Part of the original rules, but not all narrators use it now. By this rule, a lynch only occurs if at least 25% of the players vote for the same person. If no 25% majority is reached, the mob cannot gather sufficient numbers to lynch anyone.
Additionally, if a 50% majority is reached, day may optionally end early at that point, if the narrators want it to.

Auto-lynches: If a player fails to vote for a certain number of day phases (Usually 2), they will be auto-lynched. If you will be unable to get online to post in your games for some period of time, you should notify the narrator(s) in advance, either in-thread or via PM.

The next phase is the night phase, which lasts from dusk ‘til dawn. This phase typically lasts 24 hours. During this phase, anyone that has a special action to perform during that time does so via PM to the narrator(s). This is the phase of the game where the wolves would tell the narrators who they would like to kill.

After time's up, the narrators will post the opening of the following Day Scene and it starts all over again.
This continues until either A) all of the Wolves are destroyed by the Villagers -or- B) the Wolves reduce the total number of non-wolf players to equal their own.

This is just a brief overview of the basic rules. Specific games may have variant rules which will be detailed in the game thread.

--Basic Role Descriptions--Once a game has closed recruitment, the narrator will randomly assign roles and PM all players with their role. Traditional roles are as follows:

Team Villager
Villager: You are a villager. Your job is to stay alive, and ferret out the werewolves.

Mason: Your job is to ferret out the werewolves, and to protect your fellow Mason(s). There will always be a minimum of 2 Masons in a group. The masons are told each other’s identities.

Seer: Each night phase, you may PM the Narrator and co-Narrator to look into the heart of one other player. When you select a player, the answer given to you will be villager, fool, or werewolf. Seers see the Devil as a Werewolf.

Fool: Thinks he is a seer. Is told that he is a seer. When a fool gets his foresight in the evening, he gets a random chance as to what he sees when he points somebody out. When he points to the Seer, he will always see the Fool, and vice versa.

Baner: This person is the carrier of the wolfsbane. Each night he may protect someone he believes is a villager, from the werewolves’ night-kill.

Team Werewolf
Werewolf: Each night phase the werewolves choose among themselves who they want to kill, and send this in to the narrator(s).

Devil: Is basically the seer for the werewolves, however gets more precise results (Specific role rather than just villager, fool, or werewolf).
Note that other than villager and werewolf, none of these roles have to appear in any given game, and there are other roles which may be included. The narrator has the right to include whatever roles s/he wants, and alter them as s/he sees fit.

Victory Conditions:

For Team Villagers to win, the villagers must lynch all of the werewolves.

For Team Werewolf to win, they must simply reduce the number of villagers (Including special roles on Team Villager) to equal their current numbers.

Finally, if anyone has any other ideas as far as what to put in this thread, feel free to voice them here or PM them to me.

--Narrating--

--How Narrators Should Use This Thread--In addition to the ways players should use Central, narrators can:
Post the rules of games you’re planning, for balance advice, and potentially to garner interest in advance.
Look for a co-narrator.
Book a place for your game in the schedule.
Let us know when your game is recruiting/starting/ending.
Share fun stuff you've created, such as Korith's games spreadsheet.

--Interesting and Important Notes by Lucky--A couple other things to note when running a game of Werewolves:

A) Having a co-narrator is highly recommended. This is to assist with the flow of the game, and just makes it easier on the narrator.

Rules on cheating:

The SMBG stance on cheating applies to all of these games, and cheaters will be punished as dictated by the SMBG rules.

However, after the culprit has been punished and s/he has served his time off from the werewolf games, it will become forgotten history. No one is to speak of it further, and any concern will be PMed to the narrators of that game, not posted in the thread.

--Scheduling your game--
We've all decided amongst ourselves that we should only have one game starting in any given week. Exceptions are made for small games (<20 players) and well-known games which have no problems attracting players whenever (Though we still try to keep those spaced out).

Please PM me or post here if you're planning on starting a game, so that we can coordinate everything properly.
This will ensure that every game gets the attention that it deserves and will make every game more enjoyable.
Thanks in advance.

Just as the Three Post Rule is usually enforced by ourselves rather than getting Mods involved, so too should rules that we've created for ourselves be so enforced. Please politely direct anyone starting a game out of turn to this thread.
As this is not a forum rule, this can only be enforced by us.
A little common courtesy goes a long way.

A note on posting Recruitment/Game Threads:
Threads created in the Structured Games subforum have to wait to be approved by a mod (Alarra)
If you need a second post to open your game, simply put that in the Title of your thread so that your players will not post as soon as it goes up, like I did for this thread.
Then change the Title when you're ready to play.

Recruitment and Game Schedules
Note that the date listed is for the Game Thread to go up,
not the recruitment thread.
Begin recruitment at your leisure.

--Co-narrators--
Advice from Atreyu the Masked Llama:
The co-narrator serves many purposes
1) It can help with sending out the opening PM's to players.
2) it can give the narrator someone to talk to about the game and how its going
3) It is someone the narrator can plot with about any changes to make (but that's not relevant in classic)
4) if the narrator cannot fulfil his duties for any reason, the co-narrator can cover his back and make an update or two.
5) OOOOH, writing descriptions is good too.

If you want a co-narrator, ask here in Central. It will probably help to say what your game will be like, though some people will narrate anything.

Claims on Specific Editions/Variants:In general, a WW variant someone runs is considered specifically theirs. If you want to run another one of it, you must ask them nicely to let you co-narrate.
However, there is nothing to stop you doing something similar, which you can devise for yourself. If you’re uncertain, ask here in Central.
The exceptions to this variant ownership are WW Classic and Simply Werewolf, which get passed around. If you want to run one of these games, just ask and we’ll dig out the rules for you.

--Optional Rules--
RecruitmentIn some games, rather than, or in addition to, killing the villagers, the wolves may instead recruit them. The targeted villager becomes a werewolf instead. Power roles are typically immune to recruitment, and recruitment may be refusable, at the choice of the narrator
ScryingIt can of course be played that the Seer and Fool get specific roles in response to their scries, rather than just team allegiance or Fool.

Optional Predetermined "Fool's Scry" RolesYou may wish to randomly generate a second role distribution to be used for Fool scries, rather than randomly generating the result of each scry. This will ensure the Fool’s scries are consistent (Can’t scry the same person as different roles on separate occasions) and save you work.
Of course, if you give the Fool specific role results, you’ll have to decide what result they get if the role the Fool should scry is already dead. Obvious solution is to change said result to a basic Villager or Werewolf.
The DevilIt can be played that the Devil and the Werewolves do not start the game knowing each other (This is the case in WW Classic). This can potentially make things rather interesting, as it’s harder for everyone to know who to trust...
Helgraf's Scry Interference Rule
Under Helgraf’s Scry Interference Rule, any attempt by multiple scryers (Seer, Fool, Devil, etc.) to scry the same target on the same night will result in ‘interference’, i.e. no result.

--Additional Roles--Here are some more roles which you may see/use in a game of WW:
Team Villager:Day-baner: Each night, this player may choose someone to protect. The following day, that person cannot be lynched.
Not Team Specific:Disguiser: Each night, this player may choose a target and a role. If someone scries that target, they will see the chosen role rather than the target’s actual role (What this does to Fool scries is up to the narrator).

Voider: Each night, this player may choose a target. That target will be unable to use their own night action (If they have one)

Transmuter: Each night, this player chooses a target. The narrators randomly select one of the abilities usable in the game and use it on the target.
Team WerewolfBeast: When this player is lynched, one of the people who voted for him will also die. This may be chosen by the player, randomly selected, or the last person to vote for the beast.

Alpha: Alpha can have three possible meanings – either the Alpha scries as a villager, or they get to choose their own team, or both. This should be specified in the rules of any game where the role is used.

--Narrating Tools--Zeb's explanation of how to use the BCC system:
When you go to send a message, underneath the box where you type in the recipients is a link that says BCC. Click it and add your five people there. Like you said, it cuts down greatly on sending out the Villager PM's because you can send to groups of 5 anonymously instead of each individually.

PM Box filling up too fast?
Check out the Offline PM Viewer! (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53603)

Korith's Excel Spreadsheet. (http://hg.missingworlds.com/WerewolfGMTool.xls) - A great tool to assign all the basic roles. Also includes an option to add up to 10 custom roles, making it also useful for almost any other werewolf variant.
Instructions are included inside.
This appears to be gone. Ask here and someone may be able to email it to you.

The only concern that we've found with Korith's wonderful tool is that in some circumstances you may need to use it twice with slightly different configurations each time in order to get a fully randomized role distribution.
This will come into play when you're running an Alpha Game or when you have possible secondary roles that could be in addition to the player's primary role (such as lovers, feuders, etc.).

--Songs and Poems--

From Memesville:
The Lolrus and Anonymous
took all the memes aside.
"O Memes, do come and walk with us
And I will be your guide
I haz a shiny bukkit
In which some of you can ride."

The little memes all hurried up,
Quite eager for the treat:
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,
Their shoes were clean and neat--
And this was odd, because, you know,
They hadn't any feet.

The Lolrus and Anonymous
Walked on a mile or so,
And then they rested on a rock
Conveniently low:
Where all the little memes were standing
Waiting in a row.

"The time has come," the Lolrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of pirates--ninjas--bukkit thiefs--
Of internets--and memes--
And why did raiser b1ade confess--
And why Rick Astley sings."

"But wait a bit," the memes all cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"
"No hurry!" said Anonymous.
They thanked him much for that.

"A loaf of bread," the Lolrus said,
"Is what we chiefly need:
Pepper and vinegar besides
Are very good indeed--
Now if you're ready, dearest memes,
We can begin to feed."

"But not on us!" the memes all cried,
Turning a little blue.
"After such kindness, that would be
A dismal thing to do!"
"The night is fine," the Lolrus said.
"Do you admire the view?

"It was so kind of you to come!
And you are very nice!"
Anonymous said nothing but
"Cut us another slice:
I wish you were not quite so deaf--
I've had to ask you twice!"

"It seems a shame," the Lolrus said,
"To play them such a trick,
After we've brought them out so far,
And made them trot so quick!"
Anonymous said nothing but
"The butter's spread too thick!"

"I weep for you," the Lolrus said:
"I deeply sympathize."
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.

"My dear memes," said Anonymous,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

From Tales of Kyou II:
If I played werewolf long enough in Kyou (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrjePH49Aq0)
I'd find a way to believe that it's all true
I'm not saying that you lied
straight-faced while Llama died
Still I look to find a reason to believe

Someone like you makes it hard to lynch
Somebody else
Someone like you is easy to lynch
You should point at yourself

If I gave you time to change my vote
I'd have to actually read the stuff you wrote
I know I just picked
your name off the list...
Still I look to find a reason to believe

If I played werewolf long enough in Kyou

The Murska Constant:

Hungy Like the Wolf[/B] by Duran Duran (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv6Cr5LZStE)]
(Ha ha)
Dark in the village, night full of desire
Steam in the kitchen, go put out the fire
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
Wolfy you want me, I hope I’m baned
And catch my edits while we’re going insane
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
In touch underground
I'm on the hunt I'm coming after you
Who made that sound, I'm lost in a crowd
And I know Murska is a wolf
Straddle the line, parody and rhyme
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Mind is alive with juices like wine
And I know Murska is a wolf

Stalked in the forest, too close to hide
I'll be upon you by the moonlight side
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
Better start running, you know that I’m right
Leading the mob by pitchfork and torchlight,
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
In touch under ground
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Don’t come around, it’s you that I found
And I know Murska is a wolf
Strut on a line, parody and rhyme
I bring the village after you
Mind is alive all running inside
And I know Murska is a wolf
-
(Murska is a wolf
Murska is a wolf
Murska is a wolf)

Burning the ground I break from the crowd
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Don’t come around, it’s you that I found
And I know Murska is a wolf
Strut on a line, parody and rhyme
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Mind is alive with juices like wine
And I know Murska is a wolf

Burning the ground I break from the crowd
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Don’t come around, it’s you that I found
Strut on a line, parody and rhyme

From Jack the Ripper:

American Pie[/B] by Don McLean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHvDTUSd1Ws&feature=related)]
A long long time ago
I can still remember
How that wolf games used to make me smile
And I knew when I joined in like Fin
That I could help the villagers win
And maybe they'd not lynch me for a while
But Day three made me shiver
With every point that I'd deliver
Bad news in the game thread
I found out that I was dead
I can't remember if I lied
When asked about my team's side
But something touched me deep inside
The day the Goof has died
So...

Bye, bye to a villager guy,
Made a posting, now a ghosting from up in the sky
Them good ole wolves were laughing deeply inside
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Did you write the rules of this game
And do you point at people for their fame,
If the wagon tells you so?
Now do you believe in reading it all?
Can the Goof's words save your mortal soul?
And can you explain why your point at Cristo?
Well, I know that Mordy's in love with him
'cause I saw them prancing with the nymph
They both kicked off your shoes
Said Goof, parody the rhythm and blues
I was a old school rhyming rappin' buck
With a game being played with Llama's and Duck's
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singing

Bye, bye to a villager guy,
Made a posting, now a ghosting from up in the sky
Them good ole wolves were laughing deeply inside
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Now, for two years we've played on our own
And the forum has slowed down to the bone
But that's not how it used to be
When the Goof sang parodies of Atreyu and Faerwain
In a coat he borrowed from Indurain :smallwink:
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh and while Llama was looking down
The Goof guarded his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And though Murska got pointed at by Jontom Xire
They both knew what was their desire
And winning was all that they aspired
The day the music died
We were singing

Bye, bye to a villager guy,
Made a posting, now a ghosting from up in the sky
Them good ole wolves were laughing deeply inside
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Holy moly with a roly poly,
They slipped one past the narrating goalie,
Speaking of how the game was going fast
Perhaps they were smoking grass
The wolves tried for a forward pass
With the Goof was on the sidelines in a cast
Now the half-time air was sweet as most
While Dirk Kris updated the daily post
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
'Cause the wolves tried to take the field
The villagers refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?
We started singing

Bye, bye to a villager guy,
Made a posting, now a ghosting from up in the sky
Them good ole wolves were laughing deeply inside
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Oh, and there we were all in one place
A gaming group who was lost in space
With no time left to start again
So watch out Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Ripper killed them hookers slick
Scrying is the devil's only friend
And I watched him dance about the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No I shouldn't be so cruel
I won't break the games rules
And as the wolves silently killed on in the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Jack laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singing

Bye, bye to a villager guy,
Made a posting, now a ghosting from up in the sky
Them good ole wolves were laughing deeply inside
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

I sat by, and I sang the blues
And I watched for updates with the news
But soon I smiled and turned away
I went werewolf central,
Where I'd made music years before
But Shadow there said the music wouldn't play
And in the streets the children screamed
The losers cried, and the wolves dreamed
But not a word was posted
The good guys all were ghosted
And the three people I admire most
Alarra, Indy, and Zeb the Troll,
They caught the last game with a role
The day the music died
And they were singing

Bye, bye to a villager guy,
Made a posting, now a ghosting from up in the sky
Them good ole wolves were laughing deeply inside
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Sooo bye, bye to a villager guy,
Made a posting, now a ghosting from up in the sky
Them good ole wolves were laughing deeply inside
Singing this'll be
the day
that
I
die ...

Well, you can tell by the way I still walk,
I'm a baner's man, now let's all talk.
Music loud and blood's still warm.
I've been killing wolves since I was born.
And now I'm all right, I'm O.K.
But I won't look the other way.
We can try to understand
The voting records effect on man.
Whether you're the Devil
Or whether you're the Alpha,
I'm stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Feel the wolves breakin'
And ev'rybody shakin'
And I'm stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha,
Stayin' alive.
Stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha,
Stayin' alive.

But I'll tell you whose team we'd prefer to be on

No one's been like Murska
A king pin like Murska
No one's got us all to give in like Murska
As a specimen, yes, I'm intimidating

From Spytrap V:
At first I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live with wolves on all my sides
But then I spent so many nights thinking how I voted wrong
And I grew strong and I learned how to play along
And so we're back
In cyberspace
I just logged in to find you here with that wolfy grin upon your face
I should have changed that stupid vote
I should have made you the lynchee
If I'd known for just one second you'd be back to 'wagon me
Com'on let's go
Use your red text
It's turned around now
Cause you're the one who's dying next

Weren't you the one who tried to kill me with a false scry
You think I'd crumble
You think I'd lay down and die

Oh no not I
I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to type I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my roles to live
I've got all my votes to give
I'll survive
I will survive
Hey, hey!

--Common Knowledge--

Murska Constant: Murska is always a wolf. ALWAYS.

The Rule of Shadow: If Shadow has not been night-killed by day three, he is a wolf. Lynch him.

What Hyozo has learned playing Werewolf:

-Murska is always a wolf.
-Murska is frequently not a wolf.
-All wolves point randomly.
-All wolves are bandwagoners.
-Only wolves like to keep a low profile by frequently missing days
-Only villagers get autolynched.
-Shadow usually isn't a wolf, I still shouldn't ever trust him.
-Using petty revenge to determine early votes is meaningless and likely to get me lynched.
-Using petty revenge to determine early votes is better than nothing and therefore a good idea.
-People who claim to be a villager never really are villagers.
-Sometimes people who claim to be a villager really are villagers.
-Wolves don't point at each other on days where it makes a difference.
-Wolves like to point at each other to make it look like they're not on the same side. Since changing points would make them look extremely suspicious, this means that wolves frequently start bandwagons against each other.
-When a wolf is likely to be lynched, other wolves join the bandwagon to throw suspicion off themselves.
-Wolves covet easily defended positions, the easiest of these for them to gain is "I was the vote that pushed that wolf bandwagon into the lead, clearly no wolf would do that."
-Whenever I have a theory which I believe to be worth telling people, it is probably wrong.
-Whenever I have a theory which I do not believe to be worth telling people, it is probably right, and I will probably die before I change my mind.

The first free spot is May 3rd? Can I grab that? I have an idea for a werewolf-style game that I would like to try out.

There are three teams, one good and two bad. Each bad team is called a "cult", but no cult member knows the identity of any other cult member (except for the leader, who starts out knowing one of their cult members). A cult wins when the other cult is eradicated and they equal the good team (drawing a blank for the name) in numbers. The good team wins by eliminating both cults. Each cult has the following members.
Leader: The leader begins with knowledge of one member of their cult of their choice (chosen by role). Once per night, the leader may choose a player: that player may not be lynched the next day. This ability may only be used once on any given player. The leader scries as a villager, except to their own plotter. (Alpha)
Plotter: The plotter may select one player each night. The plotter learns that player's role but not their cult affiliation (if any). (Devil)
Mystic: The mystic may, once per night, send a message to all members of their cult. This message is PMed to the narrator, and passed on at the end of the night phase: it may not openly reveal the mystic's identity. It may, however, inform the cult of the identity of another member. (special)
Novices: Each cult has three novices. They have no special powers. (Wolf)

Team good has the following members:
Sheriff: The sheriff's identity is openly known. If he is night killed, one person who voted to kill him is revealed.
Expert: The expert may, once per night, pick a player by PMing the narrator. Their choice is openly named, and the expert learns their identity. (Seer)
Plucky Kid: The plucky kid's identity is unknown, even to them. When the plucky kid would be killed, they are instead revealed to be the plucky kid. The second time that they would be killed, they die.
Big Guy: The big guy may pick one player each night (including themselves). That player is protected from night kills for that night. (Baner)
Townspeople: Just townspeople in the midst of the cultist menace. (Villager)

Day phase goes as normal. During the night phase, all night actions are sent in, and the cultists vote on who to kill. Each cult's votes are counted separately, and so two people are night-killed each night (unless they agree).

Thoughts?

Ok, quick comments:
The Mystic reminds me of Spytrap's infiltrator, who could freely send coded messages that no one but the wolves and a single good power role could decode. The Mystic as it stands, though, seems a little too prone to obsoleting itself – I can see the mystic sending a message to the wolves saying, "if someone sends you the following PM, they're me, so send them a PM with the word 'swordfish' in it", proceeding to send that PM to random people, and, once a wolf saw that PM, the two would get in touch and the Mystic could tell all the wolves to contact the second player. So, cool idea, but might need some work.
The Sheriff – Guh. Just begging to be broken. Protected by the baner every night, instantly in contact with the Seer… seems like a recipe for instant Team-Good networking to me.

Fortuna
2010-01-19, 09:58 PM
Hm. You have a point about the Mystic: do you have any idea how to fix it?

As to the sheriff: How about instead I make him immune to lynching, don't reveal his identity, and keep the night-kill power?

Uncle Festy
2010-01-20, 07:05 AM
The Mystic? Two ideas: take a leaf from Spytrap and let him send unlimited messages to players of his choice but only let the wolves and a single good power role understand them, OR have there be both a good and evil version of the Mystic who can send messages to individual players (maybe unlimited?), but the reader doesn't know their source. Sure the respective Mystic can claim Role X, but the reader has no way of knowing for sure.
As long as the Sherrif looses the whole "confirmed at start" bit, he's fine.

OK, revised roles for my game.

Cults
Leader: The leader begins with knowledge of one member of their cult of their choice (chosen by role). Once per night, the leader may choose a player: that player may not be lynched the next day. This ability may only be used once on any given player. The leader scries as a villager, except to their own plotter. (Alpha)

Sheriff: If the sheriff is night killed, one person who voted to kill him is revealed. (special)
(Baner)
Medium: The medium may, once per night, send a secret message to each cult. These messages are sent the same way as the mystics' messages, and can be different.
Townspeople: Just townspeople in the midst of the cultist menace. (Villager)

Any more balance issues? I may come up with more roles if I feel like it.

Trixie
2010-01-20, 06:23 PM
Yes - in my opinion, you're doing it the wrong way. It doesn't matter what kind of roles your game has, they need to pass only two checks: A) Is the role fun? B) Is is destabilizing, is so, in what way, and what can you do to counter it?

Note that destabilizing roles are common, and are not necessarily bad - both baner/voider and seer/shadow combos are destabilizing, yet keep each other in check.

So, look at the big picture, think who can destabilize game in what ways, then add/cut as needed.

Note that even best balance can't possibly work, as the players themselves are imbalanced (better/worse). Say, in one *cough* recent game all the balance in the world, including a few hidden, deliberate checks didn't changed the fact that a certain strong player team rolled for one group almost effortlessly kicked the others even with subpar abilities because the rest didn't really felt like using tools being given to them :smallsigh:

Presenting The Gamers Werewolf

The Princess has been kidnapped by The Shadow. The Shadow? The Shadow! The Shadow. You have been set to rescure her, however, thanks to a lack of mins, everyone looks the same. Can the Heros save the Princess, or will a TPK happen?

Roles:
The PCs
Rogar: Baner Barbarian with the hits points to take a dangerous trap, but not the rolls to pull out a iron grate. 10 gold max

Nimble: Bandit Master Thief who like to see if he can do things. 20 gold max

Newmoon: Head Mason, picks the masons, The elf ranger with nice rolls. 10 gold max

Ambrose: Seer Mage with a fear of water. 10 gold max

Magellan: Backup Seer when Ambrose dies, Mage who is just like Ambrose. 10 gold max

Henchmen: Masons, the guys who do what the PC's tell them to do. 5 gold max

Villiages: Need I say more? 5 gold max

The Villians
The Shadow? The Shadow! The Shadow. BBEG, kidnapper of the Princess. Takes 50% to lynch. 15 gold max

The Bandit King: Devil Picks bandits 10 gold max

Bandits: Wolfs 5 gold max

There is of course a forest full of both gold and nothing, a.k.a the desert forest with a number of plots related to the number of players. There is also a store nearby.

{table="head"]Gold|Item
40|Mark the Red: Auto lynch of a villian, you pick a number of how many villians left, and that villian is lynched, fails on The Shadow? The Shadow! The Shadow. Only two.
30|Nice Roll: Banes. Only two.
20|Bastillia: Snipes. Only three.
20|Peek at Sheet: Scry. Only three.
10|Lucky Shot: +1 to point
5|Pants: Gives 5 more gold as max[/table]

So, does this look enjoyable?

Sounds fun. A bit of explanation vis-a-vis Nimble being a Bandit, but also being on team good.

In fact, some more explanation about all of the roles would be good.

Simple answer to that, go to Youtube, type The Gamers, and watch.

Long answer, the roles are those of the characters in The Gamers, using the different things do and gags as they happen.

The PC's, minus the henchmen and viliagers are the party: a thief, a mage/a backup character when the first one died who scries, a fighter who takes the hits, and a guy with a bow who knows more about the wildiness(aka the roles of the other)

The Villians goes with what they did in the film, which a few changes.

Games switched, labeled, etc. Changed the game start on Mafia to '????', since we don't know when Andre will be ready to do it, and I've put Thursday Next II down as cancelled, since we're well past when it was supposed to start (And Bookworm still hasn't posted the ending narration for the first one yet...)
I also remembered that a while back Paul Muad'dib asked for his game to be removed from the schedule, and no-one did it. It has now been done, leaving an open slot in the week of March 15. Anyone want to move up?

So my brain has been thinking up some more fun twists to try in a game. Feel free to take these and use them.

Moonlight - Every 4th day, the full moon rises. On that night, instead of a kill, the wolves get the chance to recruit a player.

Mad-Money - Game is played with money similar to bandits in YOW. Only rather then kills, players are eliminated when they run out of money. - The catch - the bandits can steal up to X amount of coins each night (X determined as 1+ average money player starts with). So if X = 5, and the bandits steal 5 from player bob, but bob has 6, then bob survives the night. If bob had 5 or less, he'd be removed from the game. Lynching works as normal. Can also work with multiple teams of bandits. And store is an option to better circulate money. Needs some fleshing out, but if you want to run with it please do.

There's a potential problem here that games should account for. If transferring money is allowed and there is a seer, the seer could go public and ask for most of everyone's money making it very hard to kill the seer. Anyone not giving money to the seer would be the first ones scryed. There are probably several ways to avoid this, its just something to keep in mind.

Hey there, I'm new to the Structured Games section of the GitP forums but I frequent the play-by-post area. I'm GMed a hefty amount of play-by-post games in a variety of systems and I've played in a few WW games back over at the Elder Scrolls forums, and now I'm thinking of running a small one myself.

It'd be 20 players or less, and it'd would be relatively simple. Only the Villager, Werewolf, Rogue (kill a player, on the Villager's side) and Doctor (protect a player, on the Villager's side) roles.

The theme would be John Carpenter's The Thing. The names of the roles would obviously be changed. Villagers would be Researchers and the Werewolves would be, collectively, the Thing.

The only rules twist that would need is that the game starts with only one 'werewolf', which I will now refer to as the Thing. The Thing chooses to assimilate someone every night. The twist is that the longer the game goes on, the higher the chance is that the person is just killed instead of assimilated. Assimilated players act like normal civilians during the day, and even though they are part of the Thing they still only choose one player to assimilate, they just must start coordinating. The goal is to, of course, kill or assimilate everyone else.
--1st night 100% chance Turn into a 'thing', 0% chance the player dies
--2nd night 50% chance Turn into a 'thing', 50% chance the player dies
--3rd night 25% chance Turn into a 'thing', 75% chance the player dies
--4th night 12.5% chance Turn into a 'thing', 87.5% chance the player dies
--5th night (and all following nights) 10% chance Turn into a 'thing', 90% chance the player dies

This would be my first time hosting a game of WW, and I don't exactly know what the forum etiquette around here is for doing so, so I'm announcing it here to ask for advice and garner attention/gauge interest. I've read the very helpful first post in this thread.

So, what do you think?

So it is possible to lynch the only wolf on the first day?

Perhaps he can choose one ally the first day? Well I was thinking that the game would 'start' on a night, which would also serve as a roleplaying/confirmation. Which is why there's a 100% assimilation rate the first night, so essentially yes, he is picking out an ally, but it's not completely at random since he gets to watch the players interacting with each other.

rakkoon
2010-02-04, 08:32 AM
Well that solves that problem. Rest looks fine to me but let someone with some rule-making experience comment further. Games up to 20 players are free to start anytime but it is friendlier to announce it here first.

You should send her two PMs - one detailing the thread, one asking for permission. An additional, motivational one is optional.

You might also want to remind her about if if it isn't approved right away. Two to three PMs a day work wonders, I hear.

In any case, the more you send, the less you'll wait, but sending more than six per day might be a bit of bad taste, though. In any case, trying won't hurt anyone. Send away!

I found narrating to be in some ways less taxing than playing. I didn't have to sit there for ages trying to figure out who was on which side, I just had to resolve the actions according to the rules, which I'd already written.
OK, actually writing the narrations took a bit more thought, but still not too much.
Admittedly I have a freer RL schedule than a lot of people, but still, personally I don't see how some people have so much difficulty with it.

happyturtle
2010-02-05, 11:25 AM
Yeah. And there's a dirty little secret narrators have - you can recruit players to do some of the work for you, like counting votes or working out who is in danger of autolynch. :smallwink: Heck, I even wrote some of the narrations when I was a player in Kyou and the narrator (Shadowcaller) ended up being bogged down with schoolwork. He just ended the day or night phase, told me who died and their role, and I wrote the flavor text.

To me metagaming is using knowledge from outside the specific game you're in. Things like "Murska is a scheming backstabber, so don't trust him ever" or "Moon Called always autolynches so no one would recruit her".

Darkcomet
2010-02-05, 09:43 PM

Interesting discussion, metagaming to me is using stuff like typing errors in role pm's to find the real villagers ( but that would never happen :smallconfused: ).

I mention it because when I first started here, I was warned that I could roleplay but shouldn't complain about others talking about the games itself (spreadsheets, counting, chats). GardenP is saying the exact opposite.
No problem for me, just a change.

Actually I'm joining the game. But then I have to stop joining. Really. I have no willpower :smalleek:

For me, roleplaying is playing as your character in the game, playing or 'gaming' is playing according to the rules of the game to win(such as outing yourself as the baner to create a network or claiming to be the seer as a wolf to find villager powerroles) and metagaming is playing according to the other players to win(such as looking at when people were online to see if they could be the wolf who missed a nightkill or noting that some people tend to target the wolf nightkills in a similar pattern than they've been targeted in this game).

I don't have a problem with any of these.

Mordokai
2010-02-07, 05:34 AM
Actually, by definition, metagaming is using out of game knowledge. Such as, player that and that did thing such and such in game then and then (yeah, I know, but I won't be using any names), therefore, his role is most likely...

I have no problems with metagaming and actually use it quite a lot. It has proven itself as quite a reliable tactic and it has uses. Nobody plays metagame free, much as they would like it. Some people just use it to smaller extent than others.

Not to be confused with vindicative nature of the players. The two are hardly the same, even if the later can prove useful too. But sometimes you just think people are out to get you. It's not (always) true. Sometimes they are just metagaming.

Mafia Update -

After - YOW finishes
WW Classic starts and goes through a few days of play - after the first three or four days and the first round of autolynches;
AFTER selecting 1 or 2 co-narrators (mandatory)

Then I'll put up the recruiting for the next Mafia game.

Anyone have the time and inclination to co-narrate?

AF ~
I really really really really REALLY wanna play in Mafia, BUT if no one else signs up as second co-narrator, I MIGHT be able to help.

That being said, I would really rather someone else do it, since I got killed on, like, Day 2 or 3 in the last one (*growl*) but I certainly don't want to keep EVERYone else from playing.

I had an idea for a Werewolf game on working on. It's sort of inspired by the movie The Departed/Infernal Affairs, but that wouldn't necessarily be the theme.

There are two teams, each headed by a Don. The Don for each team is known publicly, like the Joker from Arkham Asylum WW. As a public role, the Don is Untouchable, and cannot be lynched or nightkilled.

Each Don is given the identities of four Capos, who are, for all intents and purposes, his masons. However, the Capos do not know each others' identities unless the Don tells them. This is because the Dons also each have a Double Agent who is disguised as one of the opposing Don's Capos.

The game ends when one team manages to eliminate the other Don's three loyal Capos as well as the Double Agent within their own ranks.

There are a number of neutral roles who have abilities that could help either team. It's up to the Dons to convince them to help. Generally, villagers and neutral roles can win by surviving the game and allying with the winning team.

That's the basic idea. Any ideas/suggestions/problems/constructive criticism/previous games with similar ideas I should look into?

Call me crazy, but I've had a rather...unique idea for a Werewolf game that could either be extraordinarily great, or truly awful. I think it would at least be fun, if nothing else.

The name of this game is Politics. Everyone playing the game is given a team color, either red or blue. Everyone keeps their color throughout the entire game. Every two nights, someone is "Removed from Office" (lynched), and as soon as there is no more of one color, the other team's color wins.

The catch here is that even when a player is "Removed From Office", they are still allowed to vote on every lynch, right up until their final color is removed from the game.

Players are encouraged to try to manipulate others, and there is absolutely no rule that restricts players from outright revealing their colors to another, as the game starts out with an equal number of people on each team, and the color of a person is not revealed after they are removed.

Most importantly, there is no actual Werewolf in the game. Also note that while the Red/Blue dichotomy is set up to mimic American politics, RPers can choose to be any party they wish when playing as a color.

So to summarize the rules...

-Each player is assigned a color. Either Red or Blue
-Over the course of 2 days, players vote on who to Remove From Office. Highest number of votes gets removed, with ties going to the first person to be voted to that number.
-Removed from office players continue to vote, as the host keeps track of when players have been removed from office.
-Play continues until all the players of one color are removed from office. The opposing color wins the game.

Would anyone be interested in a game like that? Would anyone be willing to be a Co-Host for me?

I'm not sure about the night kill. 2 deaths a night, every night might be too much.

As for the neutrals, the idea is that one of the Dons is going to win, and the neutrals are basically villagers that need to pick a side.

Perhaps with a one-night cooldown?

Oh, and I've just thought of something. The Don's going to have to be very careful with his double agent, because if the other team's double agent finds out who he is, then they can tell the other Don.

@Introbulus: Nah, politics should be fine, but perhaps different colours? It should probably be fine as it is now, with just the colours and no actual party names, I'm just a little paranoid.

So I'm thinking up of doing Civilization III, maybe II and a half since the last one was never finished.

First off, would anyone still be interested in another Civilizations game?

Second, I'm thinking of taking an idea from the Stargate WW game, and have some sort of transport between Mars and Earth, and you can only vote to lynch people on your specific planet. Though this would involve people rather than countries unless expansion was re-envisioned to include mars. It would take some thinking. Any suggestions/comments on that?

The roles would probably remain mostly the same.

@V: Yeah, I got the inspiration from that game, though traveling between planets might replace the one thing that makes my game really unique, so it's only a vague idea at the moment.

Rough Draft for Civilization III rules.

About a hundred years ago, Mars attacked Earth (Civilizations II). No one is sure what happened due to the massive amounts of people killed, but as always, life came back. Humans and Martians now live peacefully on both of their planets.

As in all Werewolf games, each player gets to vote for who to invade (lynch) during the day phase. How the voting goes is where Civilization deviates from normal Werewolf gameplay.

Each player has a civilization under its command. Each Civilization starts out with two votes that it can use to point at someone in red for that days invasion (lynch). When someone is invaded, the adjacent two Civilizations absorb the votes of the fallen Civilization, rounded down if needed.

There are also night invasions by the Evil Civilizations. The invaded civilization's votes are absorbed by the adjacent civilizations as they are during regular invasions.

There are civilizations on both Mars and Earth. The Civilizations on Earth vote for who to invade there, and the Civilizations on Mars vote for who to invade there. At the end of the day, the Civilization with the most votes towards them gets invaded. Only one civilization gets invaded every day.

The civilization is either a Martian Civilization or a Human Civilization. There are two classes of Civilizations. There are the Grounded Civilizations and the Space-Faring Civilizations.

Grounded Civilizations are either Martian or Human, and stay on their respective planets for the duration of the game. A grounded civilization only has land on one planet, and can only vote for invasions on that planet. A grounded civilization also gets 50% more votes when voting for who to invade on their planet.

A Space-Faring Civilization can change what planet their Civilization's leader is on during the night via PM. They have land on both planets, but only get the normal amount of votes that their land would get them. They can vote for who to invade only on their planet.

At the beginning of the game, a player is PMed with their Role, Class, and Species.

Maps of the Civilizations on both planets will be shown in the thread along with how many votes everyone has and what planet their civlization's leader is on.

Roles:

The Good:

Civilization (Villager): Just a normal civilization. Gets to vote for who to invade during the day on whatever planet the leader is on. Wins by eliminating the Evil Civilizations.

Spy Civilization (Seer): A Civilization that can find out what kind of civilization another civilization on their planet is during night via PM to the narrator. Wins with the elimination of the Evil Civilizations.

Diplomat (Can be Baner): At the beginning of the game, the Diplomatic Civilization can choose to either be immune to day invasions or to protect one other civilization every night from night invasion by PM to the Narrator. Wins with the elimination of the Evil Civilizations.

The Bad:

Evil Civilization (Wolf): During the Night, the evil civilizations can choose one person to night invade by PM to the Narrator. Instead of a night kill, the Evil Civilizations may chose to recruit one person to the evil side by PM to the Narrator. The Narrator will PM the person they want to recruit, and they may either accept or decline. If declined, the person they tried to recruit will NOT learn the identity of the recruiters. If recruiting is attempted, the night invasion will be lost. Wins when the amount of votes of the other Civilizations equals or is less than the Evil Civilizations.

Evil Spy Civilizations (Devil): Is an Evil Civilization that can also find out what kind of Civilization another Civilization is by PM to the Narrator.

The Ugly Neutral:

Switzerland: The Neutral Civilization. Wins by surviving to the end of the game. Also known as the Lamech Civ.

Terrorist(s) (Possibly Beast): The leader of this Civilization has the option of invading another civilization during the night, destroying itself in the process. If invaded during the day, an adjacent civilization is invaded at the last minute by the Terrorists. The Terrorist wins if it invades a power civilization.

I think that's it. Any suggestions and/or comments?

Doseki, Fin and Ranna ran a Stargate game...

Hmm, speak of the devil!

I have returned. First let me apologise if my mysterious disappearing act inconvenienced anybody, the important thing is I am back now. This is in fact the second of my triumphant returns however this one has nothing to do with tropical maladies affecting my significant other and much more to do with me getting a new job and life generally being very busy.

To all those that remember me, it is wonderful to see you again I missed you. To those that don't know me... Hello, my name is Fin and I used to play WW quite alot. The highlight of my WW career came during the LotR WW where I convinced the baner to protect me and then got attacked by wolves successfully proving myself a villager, alas for the Baner as I to was a wolf! :smallamused: My lowest moment had to be during Advent Children II where I successfully got Cristo Meyers lynch because I knew he was Sephiroth after a week long campaign, alas for me... He was not Sephiroth :smalleek:

So that just about sums up the returning cheer so let's get back to the WW

Questions.

Generally, when a Baner protects someone, does the protected person know the identity of the Baner? That is, by protecting someone, is the Baner's identity revealed to that person?

Also, upon someone's death, does the gamemaster generally tell them who is what, so they can watch the game with omniscience? Or do they have to wait like the players?

Somewhat related to the last question, are players generally allowed to freely PM each other?

Irbis

Generally, when a Baner protects someone, does the protected person know the identity of the Baner? That is, by protecting someone, is the Baner's identity revealed to that person?

As a rule of thumb, no.

Also, upon someone's death, does the gamemaster generally tell them who is what, so they can watch the game with omniscience? Or do they have to wait like the players?

Depends on the gamemaster/narrator. It happens, but it's not exactly common practice. But most players are patient enough to wait until the game is over.

Somewhat related to the last question, are players generally allowed to freely PM each other?

Yes. (why did Irbis say 'no'? :smallconfused:)
This allows for more sneaky behind-the-scenes dealings. It's a great boon, especially for villagers who can actually start secure, overarching, "secret society" networks rather than throw everything out in the open. Still, not allowing private messaging (such as in The Thing) is a nice change of pace and an interesting challenge to overcome. I'm not yet sold on the idea as a whole, but I'm not inherently opposed to it either.

Questions.

Generally, when a Baner protects someone, does the protected person know the identity of the Baner? That is, by protecting someone, is the Baner's identity revealed to that person?

No. Also, it's handled different ways in the narration by different narrators.

1. "X was targeted, but protected by the baner." (advantage team good, as baner knows who they protected)
2. "Someone was targeted, but protected by the baner." (no real advantage to either team.)
3. "No one died." (advantage team evil, as the wolves know if they targetted someone or missed a kill.)

Also, upon someone's death, does the gamemaster generally tell them who is what, so they can watch the game with omniscience? Or do they have to wait like the players?

Some do, some don't. Some dead players ascend to co-narratorhood as well.

Somewhat related to the last question, are players generally allowed to freely PM each other?

Living players can talk freely to other living players. Dead players can talk freely to other dead players. Dead players and living players should not talk to each other.

The Abhorsen's Werewolf

Game rules/Using the Bells:

Only one bell per person with the exception of Sabriel/The Mordicant and Mogget.
If any person with a bell is night killed, the bell goes instantly to team evil.
If any person with a bell is lynched, it randomly goes to anyone.
If a Death Hand, The Mordicant, or Kerrigor who has a bell is lynched, it is given to The Abhorsen who can give it to any player he wants. If The Abhorsen is dead it goes to Sabriel, The Abhorsen-in-Training. If Sabriel is dead, then it randomly goes to a villager. The only exception is Astarael which always stays with Team Evil.
The Abhorsen and Kerrigor can hold on to multiple bells and do not need to give bells immediately away, but they are still limited to using the bell they start off with. Any extra bells they are holding onto are randomly assigned.
Once a person has a bell, it cannot be undone.
Kerrigor, the Mordicant, and Death Hands who have a bell start off knowing each other. Everyone else starts off blind, including the remaining wolves.
Once again, there are no Masons in this game.
Mogget the Neutral is an random variable in this game and is subject to most, but not all rules of the game. More information is listed under the role.
If Sabriel is night killed, and The Mordicant is still alive, he gets Belgaer and is able to scry a person's role and see if they are carrying a bell.
If The Mordicant is lynched and Sabriel is still alive, she gets Dyrim and is able to scry a person's role and see if they have a bell.
If either has both bells and are killed/lynched, then the bells split one to each team.
For all bells: If the original owner dies, then the new owner can only use the action once every other night. the exception is Mogget (See Role).
When a new person gets a bell, they are not put into contact with anyone.

Players:
The Abhorsen (Baner) - Father to Sabriel, he has come to help give his daughter a helping hand. Starts off with the bell Saraneth.

Sabriel (Seer) - Daughter to the Abhorsen and the Abhorsen-in-training, she is here also to help in the end. Starts off with the bell Belgaer.

Touchstone - He has been asleep for over 200 years and has just been woken up by Sabriel. Doesn't remember who he is. Starts with the bell Ranna.

Colonel Horyse - Leader of the Northern Perimeter Reconaissance Unit, more commonly known as the Crossing Point Scouts. Starts off with the bell Kibeth.

Charter Mages (Villagers) - Capable of using bells but not to their full extent.

Death Hands (Wolves) - normal wolves who can use bells, but not to their fullest extent.

Kerrigor (Beast) - The Greater Undead working to break The Great Charter. Starts off with the bell Astarael. If killed, he randomly takes someone down with him.

The Mordicant (Devil) - a summoned beast to hunt down Sabriel. Starts off with the bell Dyrim.

Mogget (Neutral)- A mischevious little white cat who loves to eat. A lot. He has grown rather bored over the centuries, so he has learned how to mess with people.

As such, his win condition is to gather 3 of the 7 bells. Once per night, he can scry a person to see if they have a bell. If they do not have a bell, he gets "no reading." If they do, the next night he can steal the bell from them. Astarael cannot be stolen. Once he gathers at least 3 bells, he can dissapear (leave the game) and take the bells with him so they can no longer be used.

If Mogget has one bell - he can use that bell on a target and have the bell's effect take place on that target as well as scrying them (the original target, and not say the target's target (from Kibeth the Walker). Usable once per night.

If Mogget has two bells - He can use both the bells on two different individuals, and scry both the individuals. Both of the effects of the bells take effect on the two different targets. Useable every other night.

If Mogget has three bells or more - he can either leave the game (win condition) or choose to remain. Should he choose to remain, he can either
a) use all three bell's actions every other night on three different targets.
b) scry three different targets every other night.

The Bells:
Ranna the Sleep Bringer - The lush tone of this bell puts one target to sleep for the night causing them to negate their point the next day. Given to Touchstone at the beginning of the game.

Mosrael the Waker - This subtle bell can bring the ringer into life and the listener farther into death or vice versa. Once per night it is capable of voiding a person's night action if they have one. Given to a Death Hand at the beginning of the game. Cannot be used on the same person consecutively.

Kibeth the Walker - Allows the ringer to control people. If the person of this bell knows another person that has a bell, they can change the target of that person's to another target of their choosing. While the action remains the same, the target switches. The person whose action is changed is notified to whom it was changed to, but not by whom. Given to Colonel Horyse at the beginning of the game. Cannot be used on the same person consecutively. No penalty if the person does not have a bell. But is not told if the effect worked or not.

Dyrim the Speaker - Allows a person to freely express themselves and tell the ringer of the bell the truth. Once per night, the ringer may either find out a person's role or if they hold a bell. Given to The Mordicant at the beginning of the game.

Belgaer the Thinker - Allows the ringer of the bell to read the thoughts of its victim. Once per night, the ringer of this bell may either find out a person's role or if they hold a bell. Given to Sabriel at the beginning of the game.

Saraneth the Binder - Can bind undead to the its will, once per night the person can choose to protect a person from attacks. Given to Abhorsen at the beginning of the game.
If he is night killed, Saraneth goes to team evils hands where it becomes a day baner. Must choose a target to use it on an the effects happen the next day. If succsessful, two night cooldown.

Astarael the Sorrowful - The most deadly of the bells, whoever hears it ring instantly dies. Kerrigor is able to overcome its effect and can use the bell every night. As long as Kerrigor is alive, the wolves have a night kill every night. The day he is lynched, the bell passes on along to a Death Hand, who is then able to send in the kill every other night.

Story/fluff-wise, it's fine.
Balance-wise, I don't know if I'm that great a judge, but it should work, particularly since of course the number of Dead Hands can be adjusted to keep it so.
Lack of masons is unusual, as is the fact most roles don't have actual abilities in and of themselves, just the bells.

The fact that the bells bind themselves to the user though, makes it like a special ability no?

We also thought adding masons would be a tad too powerful, trust me we talked for a while deciding whether not to have masons or omit them.

ah but that's the genius. You never know if you'll have an ability or not and other people who usually are stuck a villager might have a chance to gainan ability.

and the lack of masons i because if The Abhorsen is dead and Sabriel scries the Mason group, she can easily give them bells then you have confirmed team good bell users. If i were to add in Masons, the wolves would not start off half blind.

Thanks for all the replies. Another question.

Has anyone ever thought of doing day/night phases simultaneously? As in, someone gets lynched, but the special roles also get to send in their actions, and then the next entire day (day & night), everything would be revealed. Role of the lynch victim, who got killed, and so on. I think this was the norm for the WW games back on the TES forums where I started playing. Seems like it would make for a quicker game, with the one off-chance that the wolf attack target and lynch victim are the same.

Again, there is zero chance of that given even one intelligent player among them. And day/night seems great, until you realize that gives village less info and generally favors the wolves in most respects, like not giving seer time to think at all.

Maybe people would pay more attention to the game, tho'.

Thinking of starting a twenty players or less than game of werewolf after The Thing wraps up, themed during WWII. I feel that I've learned a lot by running The Thing, and have a better grasp on how WW games work, especially how the particulars change forum to forum.

So basic WWII-themed werewolf game, less than twenty players, with a splash of 'new' roles - the watcher, tracker, and the reporter. And perhaps a friendly neighbour or two, because roles make people happy. I was thinking that it would take place in a locked-down bunker or government building or some such. I think a fun twist would be if Team Villager were actually Nazi officials, and Team Werewolf were a team of Allied spies there to hunt down/assassinate these officials. Sort of a crude/crass play at history, but it's just a werewolf game.

Excellent. I just posted the thread, hopefully it will be approved soon. I don't want to take the time to sign up for a date and everything, seeing as everything soon-ish is booked, so it will be a small game of 20 players or less.

It's called Blut und Boden, and is about Nazi officials locked in a room with Soviet spies among them, and a handful of civilians as well. There are a lot of roles, and people will be more likely than not to receive a role of some sort.

I decided to go with Soviet spies instead of American, British, or even French spies because I think that we as Westerns often neglect and ignore Russia's role in defeating Germany. They did most of the pushing, the rest of us just helped.

In any case, looking forward to a good game.

If you're going for Soviet Spies, you have to include Agent J-23 and Agent Stirlitz!

And maybe Mueller and Brunner, too.

Side note - Soviet intelligence operated one of the largest networks of agents in III Reich, including Rote Kapelle (Red Orchestra), so it isn't ahistorical in the least :smallwink:

Max Otto von Stirlitz (Maxim Maximovich Isayev) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirlitz) and his Polish inspiration/counterpart - Hans Kloss (Agent J-23) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Kloss). Both are stars of very popular movies and TV series, depicting agents infiltrating secret centres of III Reich.

Stirlitz is also a popular victim of abstract Russian jokes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_jokes#Standartenf.C3.BChrer_Stirlitz).

Heinrich Müller (Mueller) and Hermann Brunner are their SS counterparts, providing tension by almost catching them several times (one of J-23's catchphrases, "That trick won't work on me, Brunner!" even entered the language as a proverb, despite, like "Beam me up, Scotty!" never fully appearing on screen).

Hey guys, so I've been thinking of running a series of WW games based on the Arthurian legends for a while, but I've never narrated before and would be unsure about my ability to run really big games. So I decided to try and test myself with a smaller 20 player game first.

Enclosed below are the rules I propose to use - please comment and evaluate! The recruitment thread itself will be up and running in a few days time once I think of teaser and opening narration.

THE RULEZ:
Team Camelot:
King Arthur (Alpha Mason) – Head of the Knights of the Round Table, and rightful King of Camelot, Arthur wields the deadly sword Excalibur. If he is night-killed, there is a 50% chance that he kills a random wolf in his death-throes. If he is lynched, the last person to join the lynch will be killed.

Arthur also has a one-off chance to send a PM to the narrator containing the names of Lancelot and Guinevere. If he guesses correctly, they are removed from the game, and Arthur gains the powers of a baner.

Arthur starts off knowing the Masons, and he scries as himself.

Knights of the Round Table (Masons) – As Arthur’s chosen, you have sworn oaths of chivalry and loyalty. Now, in Camelot’s darkest hour, you will be put to the test. They start off knowing each other and King Arthur.

Morgan Le Fay (Seer) – A powerful sorceress, you are the half-sister of King Arthur. Previously an enemy of the Round Table, you have been reconciled to your family and wish to see their success. Once per night, you may scry another player and learn their role. Starts off not knowing the Masons.

Knights (Villagers) – As the lesser nobility of Camelot, you may choose one person each day to lynch. Other than that, commit yourself to God and pray that you survive.

WIN CONDITION – LYNCH ALL WOLVES

Team Neutral:
Sir Lancelot and Guinevere (Lovers/Baner) – Your love for each other is so great that neither can survive without the other. If one of you dies, the other dies as well.

But as Queen and Royal Knight, your forbidden love is punishable by death under the laws of Camelot. Caught between two sides, you are faced with a dilemna – if Mordred succeeds, you will be put to death as Arthurian supporters, but if Arthur discovers your adultery neither of you can hope to survive.

Once per night, Guinevere may instruct Lancelot to protect someone with her royal writ. That person may not be killed that night, and all scries against the person will reveal no result. Lancelot CANNOT be the target of this bane, though Guinevere can.

Lancelot is also a Mason, and scries as one. Guinevere scries as herself.

WIN CONDITION – LYNCH ALL WOLVES, BUT ARTHUR CANNOT SURVIVE THE GAME.

Team Mordred:
Mordred (Alpha) – Pretender to the throne, Mordred is the illegitimate son of Arthur. He may choose his sworn knights that he uses to invade Camelot. If Mordred sends in the night-kill that kills Arthur, no wolf will die. Scries as a Wolf.

Mordred’s Knights (Wolves) – Recruited by Mordred, your job is to place him on the throne of Camelot. Each night, one Wolf may send in a night-kill based on a turn order randomly determined beforehand by the narrator.

Morgause (Devil) – Half-sister of Arthur, and mother of Mordred, Morgause wishes to place her son on the throne. Each night, she may scry one person and learn their role. Does not start off knowing the wolves.

WIN CONDITION – KILL ARTHUR AND HAVE NUMBERS EQUAL TO THE SURVIVING GOOD ROLES

That's a lot of roles for a 20 person game, which makes it harder for wolves to hide, but it looks interesting.

@Fawkes: Heh, Merlin was sacrificed for accuracy to the source material. The game is set around the Battle of Salisbury/Camlamn, by which time Merlin has already been sealed into his tomb by Nimue.

@Happy: Yeah, I thought so too, but with a Mason who is essentially a traitor, and a Baner who isn't really on Team Good, I was worried that the wolves might be too overpowered.

Lex-Kat
2010-02-28, 11:45 AM
Let's see....

So, you have King Arthur and his Round Table Knights, including Sir Lancelot. That's 5 Masons.

Morgan Le Fay and Guinevere. That's 2 more good power roles. Total 7, so far.

Mordred and His Knights. 4 Wolves. That's 11.

And then Morgause. That's 12.

That leaves 8 players to be the Villagers in a 20 players game. Personally, I think you should go for a bigger game. Recruit for two weeks before game begins.

Here's a question: Does Lancelot know who King Arthur is?

I think this is a well thought out game, and I will join if I see it when the thread comes up.

lostlittlebear
2010-02-28, 12:23 PM
Yes, the idea is for Lancelot to know exactly who King Arthur is.

I was thinking perhaps of cutting down one Mason and one Wolf, leaving 10 Villagers for the 20 player game - though in light of comments it seems that might be a bad idea. The only problem I have really with recruiting more than 20 players would be the need to reserve a free slot, the earliest of which is only coming round in May. Since this was supposed to be more of a test-game than the actual series, I was hoping to start it within the month.

Would I need to reserve a slot for a 25-player game? Or would cutting down the number of roles be a better idea?

Wait, so if I were bored, I could run a 20 player game without scheduling?

Uncle Festy
2010-02-28, 12:46 PM
@LLB:
Note that Lancelot is less of a neutral and more of a Feuder – someone allied with team good, but just wants someone else to die in the process. So Lancelot as a traitor? Not so much. He's not going to pull a face-heel turn and spill the entire mason list to the wolves. He'll probably just encourage Arthur to try and take out a wolf by being night killed. :smalltongue:

Wait, so if I were bored, I could run a 20 player game without scheduling?

Yep, I've done it a number of times.

Lex-Kat
2010-02-28, 01:11 PM
You could cut the Masons by one. That I think will balance it a little. But the Wolves shouldn't lose anymore players. There is already the chance of helping to kill their own Devil during the day and night until she finds them.

So from the start, they are at four players.

That is my only suggestion, if you wish to run it as a twenty player game.

At first I was afraid

But then I spent so many nights thinking how I voted wrong
And I grew strong and I learned how to play along
And so we're back
In cyberspace
I just logged in to find you here with that wolfy grin upon your face
I should have changed that stupid vote
I should have made you the lynchee
If I'd known for just one second you'd be back to 'wagon me
Com'on let's go
Use your red text
It's turned around now
Cause you're the one who's dying next

Weren't you the one who tried to kill me with a false scry
You think I'd crumble
You think I'd lay down and die

Oh no not I
I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to type I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my roles to live
I've got all my votes to give
I'll survive
I will survive
