Today I got Don't split the party and read it all, it's good to have oots all in a book. It reminds me how much I love the comic, in a time when the online comic was losing some of his interest for me... Anyway, not the point.
I noticed a couple of things I didn't noticed before, and I've never seen reported.
1) In comic 564 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0564.html), second to last panel, Haley says that to go to the oracle they must go southwest, while for Azure City they should go shoutheast. Thus implying the oracle lies west of Azure city.
But in the end of War and XP we got a map of Cyan peninsula, where it shows that sunken valley lies east of Azure city. So Haley should have said the opposite, "we just need to head southeast rather than southwest".

2) In comic 629 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0629.html), V's house is depicted as having a white fence. When we see it later, in comic 636 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0636.html) and 639 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0639.html), the fence had turned dark brown.
I tought it may have been blackened because it burned, but it shows no marking on it that may support that interpretation, or especially justify that it get such a uniform and neat color. Flame would never do such.

I believe you dropped the 's' from your thread title. Unless.......you are intentionally being catty and left it off on purpose, though I think you would have made a more obvious mitsake.

Goes to show that errors happen to the best of us and Rich is no exception....... :smalltongue:

The fence is only white in an image spot. V's mate just painted (and gardened, while v was away. There, issue solved

The sunken valley location is interesting, though i don't have War and XPs to check.

2) Yes, because no one redecorates!

Note that the trees and the grass changes color as well, so I would blame it on the ABD and not an artistic error.

Haley is not in Azure city at the time. They are somewhere in the mountains. They could easily be Northeast of the orcale at this time. I don't see a mistake here.

I think the point he's making is that it would be difficult for them to be both north-east of the Oracle and north-west of Azure City if the city is WEST of the Oracle. Think about it.

Isn't the fence actually on fire in the first panel of #636 (next to the dragon, and also in the foreground at least)?

 whoops, I see whats going on. They are headed to Cliffport, which should be Northeast of their position, not southeast.

Have you seen the quote where the Giant talks about the limitations of his art style, and sometimes, things are just the way they are because it would be difficult to make them otherwise and keep the simple style?

Yeah. That.

Or, if you want to get nitpicky, just think that the fence has been subjected to acid breath. The acid changed the color of the paint.

Surprise!

The first is certainly a valid mistake, albeit not quite the mistake the OP indicates. Although Haley was actually referring to going to Cliffport, not Azure City, the map in War and XPs reveals Cliffport to be far north and possibly west of Azure City (off the map, but the direction to it is referenced with an arrow at the top of the map), and the Sunken Valley to be to the southeast of Azure City. Which means, assuming they weren't already north of Cliffport (which is laughably unlikely, as it would mean they had actually passed the city up already) or east of the Sunken Valley (highly unlikely given their destination was in the opposite direction), she should have said that they needed to head southeast instead of northwest.

The second could be explained by the simple art style, but is probably just a minor inconsistency. Some of the fence is on fire in one strip, but you'd expect that if the rest of it had been, it either still would be, or would have burned down completely, since there was nothing to put it out.

My guess: the world isn't a perfect flat plain, and there is some kind of impassable terrain that causes them to take a path other than straight "this way for this many miles". Perhaps "east, then north, then southeast, then northeast, then northwest..."

I dunno. Just my [crack] speculation.

The second is just to make the scene more grimdark.
Or maybe the ABD just couldn't tolerate a happy-looking fence and prestidigitation'd it to taste.

1) I don't know what map your talking about, but after Haley left Azure City couldn't it be possible from her current position that that's the direction they needed to go.

2) It was painted? I'm not sure both scenes take place at the same time. If you look closely at the background, the greens for the bushes are slightly different shades in each.

#629 is set at lunchtime.
#636 is in the evening, where everything is a darker shade.

Note that the cottage walls and roof, and the trunk of the tree behind it are also darker.

Well, rich is not immune to continuity errors...For example the half-orc-thief-guild-leader-who-I-shall-not-be-naming-due-to-my-confusion-on-the-subject <---that's 1 word... has a different second vowel in his name in the online strip/DStP vs. his first appearance in On the Order of PCs. :smallannoyed:

I want to point out that I'm not nitpiking nor blaming the writer, I'm just signaling this because I think Rich may care and made a correction in the next print of the book.
The reason I think (supposed) mistakes should be signaled.
Just it.

The whole scene is darkened by drama. If the fence still looked cheerful & white, Elan would be pointing out the error, and really, he's busy enough.
