For years I thought it was Pokémon. And then I learned of the first giant robot anime ever created, Tetsujin-28 - it's English title seemed quite familiar - Gigantor (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Gigantor).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhbhQioqLK8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AtSHp35xUg

Openings above are from the 80s version of Tetsujin and the English version of the 60s series. The one I had seen was the English version of the 80s series, "The New Adventures of Gigantor" - it had the same song, but prefaced with some clips of the old Gigantor and a narration going something like "Scientists realised that with new advances in metals and technology they could create a new, even stronger Gigantor!"

It was on a short-lived channel called TCC (The Children's Channel) alongside Earthworm Jim, Swamp Thing and The Bots Master (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bots_Master).

And then there was tokusatsu of course... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME90KROrSTc)

I think it would have been Thunderbirds 2086 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbirds_2086). If there was something earlier, I can't remember it. After that, it would either be Akira or Pokemon.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, followed closely by Pokémon.
Granted, I only saw the first episode of NGE at that time and didn't come back to it until very recently. But still, NGE was my first contact with japanimations and it was pretty cool, I thought.

I never really had much interest in anime, but the first one I watched all the way through was Princess Mononoke. After that, I was introduced to Excel Saga, Read or Die, and Tenchi, the latter of those I only watched a handful of seasons.

Beyond that, I've not had any interest in anime.

Definitely Pokemon, unless Sailor Moon commercials count. Digimon was a close second, though.

I forgot which one was the first exactly, so let's go with the only one whose name I still remember - Daimos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVHJ0Xs3Fcc), when I was still a very little kid. It felt very nostalgic to have it in SRW @3. Then I stopped watching anime for a long, long time, until I started watching Dragonball in middle school. I started to get seriously interested in anime only in high school.

Laputa, Castle in the Sky iirc. But a few of the kids cartoons I watched growing up were definitely anime influenced, from Thundercats to Jake and the Wheeled Warriors (don't worry, you really don't need to know).

I'm actually one of the few Israelis who didn't watch it when they were a kid.
There's a rumor that's been going around that the boy (In hebrew he's called Snufkin, I don't know if that's his name in Nordicland or wherever it is it came out) wakes up in the finale and he's in a concentration camp.
Is that true?

Princess Mononoke. I remember it fondly but don't think I'll ever watch it again.

The last I watched was Naruto. The first 20 episodes were awesome. Then they did some tournament for 60 episodes, most of which was rehashing previous episodes. And I couldn't marathon it either! I had to watch one ep a week over the course of a year. Turned me off to anime.

When I was five about five years old a much older friend of the family brought some dragonball vhs tapes home from Japan. I got ahold of one and watched it over, and over, and over, and over, even though I couldnt understand a damn work and there were no subtitles. I watched that vhs on repeat for about a year. Eventually it all came out in American and I watched it for about five years and lost interest. Then GT came out in America and I got into that for awhile, definitely prefer it to Z.

First anime I saw was Pokemon. I tought it was just another Saturday morning cartoon with weird art style and I hated it. Also that one hypnosis- themed Pokemon (the one with a pendulum and periodically shrinking eyes) scared me out of my mind, giving me one of the few nightmares of my life and a phobia of hypnosis I´ve since gotten over. I was like four of five at the time, so don´t look at me like that:smallsmile:

Technically Voltron, but I was very young.

The first one I was a fan of was definitely Lupin III. I still love that show.

I can't remember exactly the first anime I ever saw, but some of the oldest that I can remember were:

Lensman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt4XU2OQJrU)
Saber Rider & the Star Sheriffs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA9NPIoOZKM&feature=related)
and Captain Harlock (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuxgU2RMGiU&feature=related) (Seriously... pirates in space... it doesn't get more badass than this!)

As well there is a relatively obscure anime called Kabamaru no Iga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGiJ12nK93U&feature=related) which has gained cult status in Greece due to its horrible translation and even worse voice acting. A lot of people my age used to watch this cartoon.

Though I'd say I was first aware of a cartoon being anime while watching Dragonball.

I was little when I saw my first anime (7,8 years old?), so it was a toss-up between Pokemon, Sailor Moon, or Card Captor Sakura.

After that, it was Escaflowne followed by Rurouni Kenshin.

The First Anime I saw may have been Sailor Moon , depending on if it came before Pokemon in Canada , in which I think it did . However , CardCaptors was also on the air at the same time so it could have been any one of the three . Most likely Sailor Moon though , I think that one came first .

The first anime I ever watched was Ghost in the Shell, it was earlier this year actually. I'd pretty much avoided all anime like the plague, I was under the impression that they were all about things that i thought were foolish (giant mechs, super magic ninja powers etc.) but my uncle introduced me into Ghost and I really liked it alot more than I thought I would.

Possibly Voltron with my older siblings... That I remember some of the movies they showed on Sci-Fi in the early 90s: Vampire Hunter D, Project A-Ko, and well the one I can remember (came out in 94 I think) was the OVA remake of Casshern or as the English version of the OVA (presented as a movie) was called Cashan Robot Hunter. Also Demon City Shinjuku.

I'm not sure these were the most appropriate things for a 4~6 year old to be watching.

It was so awesome...I remember seeing some great stuff though I don't know what they were called. One was about some news reporter on a Mars colony and there was some sort of rebellion, and another was with some sort of group on a planet (maybe earth?) being attacked by crazy bug monsters (not blue gender, this was before that!). I only saw that one once and I have no idea what it was called, all I remember is a scene with these flying bug monsters attacking a caravan and theres like giant mushroom plants.

From what I can vaguely remember (it would been around the mid-80s):

* Voltron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltron) (mostly Lion, though I also saw a bit of Vehicle as well)

* The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wonderful_Wizard_of_Oz_%281986_TV_series%29)

My first anime ever was Magic Knight Rayearth, and ironically I only managed to see Season 2. Hooked me for life. Since then, I saw the usuals as they aired in Finland; Pokémon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, etc. And then some of the cream de crop as the people importing them started to read reviews; we got Evangelion and Last Exile and Cowboy Bebop and Trigun and so on.

Though at that point, I was dling it all myself online since I hated being constrainted by the TV companies, and now I've seen...a lot. Also allowed me to see the first season of Magic Knight Rayearth (that I had missed) and the whole of Sailor Moon (they only aired it to the end of Romance in Finland) and so on. And I don't know why I'm going so far off-topic. Ending now.

It's a good show for children and young teens I'd think, sure it's not that great as far as story but it entertains.. that said I prefer Dragonball, or just the manga.

My first anime was either Sailor Moon or "Cardcaptors". I don't quite recall as I was quite young at the time. Dragonball Z and Gundam Wing were definitely some of my earlier ones as well.

The first anime I saw was one called Slam Dunk. It's funny, I initially thought, how ridiculous, an entire animated series about basketball... and then I ended up watching 101 episodes of it. Heehee, to this day I still can't believe I sat through the whole thing.

As for Gundam Wing, I used to have great feelings of nostalgia for it. Then I tried to watch it again a year or two ago. Good lord that show is needlessly confusing. :smallannoyed:

What did you expect? They had to put in a recap episode half way through the series just to explain things.

Another reason I prefer G-Gundam: You come for the Giant Robot fights and stay for more Giant Robot fights. The humans are just there to pilot the robots.

From what I hear, while Hikaru no Go has ancient spirits advising people on how to play board games, the world is not obsessed with it and Go players are treated like they normally would be. There may or may not be games of Go that determine the fate of the world.

Actually, kite-flying is quite a popular activity in certain areas of the world, such as Afghanistan (especially when times were different), parts of South East Asia, and China... I suppose maybe not in Japan, and therefore no anime. I totally believe there could someday be, though. Super Saiyan is an exaggeration, he just looked like one.

The one where he traveled back in time was true though. It's actually a plot point later on that bread can retroactively change space/time. The bad guy uses a "reverse bread" to use its.. magic.. power to reverse the score of a cooking duel gameshow.

The main bad guy is under mind control from sentient evil bread that he wants to spread to the rest of the world to take it over.

It's better than it sounds... but maybe I am a sucker for cooking duels?

Edit: I actually read it, in case you couldn't tell. I also read everything else I listed, with the exception of Yugioh.

It was so awesome...I remember seeing some great stuff though I don't know what they were called. One was about some news reporter on a Mars colony and there was some sort of rebellion,
Venus my friend, they were on Venus. The anime you're thinking about there is Venus Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_Wars). One of my favorites.

and another was with some sort of group on a planet (maybe earth?) being attacked by crazy bug monsters (not blue gender, this was before that!). I only saw that one once and I have no idea what it was called, all I remember is a scene with these flying bug monsters attacking a caravan and theres like giant mushroom plants.
I think you're thinking about Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nausica%C3%A4_of_the_Valley_of_the_Wind_%28film%29 )?

It was captain tsubasa. This thread actually got me curious about other animes I saw when I was a child, before I was exposed the the most common animes.
Apparently, my second anime show was "Aku Dai-Sakusen Srungle" in spanish it was known as "Fuerza Especial Gorila" (Special Force: Gorilla) and my third anime was "My Neighbour Totoro". Untill 5 minutes ago, I had no idea how those last two shows where called, thanks google, and thanks wikipedia.

Those three where before I turned six, at that age I saw Kimba, the white lion and Speed Racer for the first time, then, when I was seven, I got cable and I saw dragonball for the first time.

I believe I started watching anime around 1990, when I was just like 4 years old. Along with other stuff from that era, I was watching Mazinger Z, Speed Racer, Candy Candy (girl cartoons, yeah!), Saint Seiya. After that, it was whatever Mexican TV brought from Japan (Which was a lot). I only knew of the concept of anime like around 1998, by 2001 I was personally looking for anime in many ways and I would say in 2003 I became an otaku when I started to sleep late downloading this cool anime called Naruto

Next were Samurai Pizza Cats and Mega Man (though I'm not sure either one counts, given that they were both written in America; SPC's a gag dub and I think there was some deal between studios or something with Mega Man).

My first would apparently be Vickie the Viking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicky_the_Viking), as it should be for pretty much every German my age, which is also based on a Scandinavian author's work, and which also noone ever knew was an anime. I only found out very recently that it was made in Japan, when Eiichiro Oda said that it was one of his major influences for One Piece. I do think it's strange they say that "the Japanese roots are clearly visible" in the Wikipedia article, what with the designs looking closer to Franco-Belgian comics to me than anything I'd usually expect from Japan.

My introduction to anime was Dragonball and DBZ. At the time, I thought it was great. Now, I make fun of the ridiculously long powerup sequences and how rarely anything really significant other than "look how much bigger this energy blast is than the previous record" happens in a fight.

At least Naruto has some variety in its absurdly powerful combat abilities.

More recently, Code Geass has become my favorite, though I'm sad that it's already over and was so short with only 2 seasons.

For me it was Voltron when I was 5 or so. After that, it was either Ronin Warriors (which I watched almost the entire way through over a summer and was the reason I got up at a decent hour) or Vampire Hunter D on TNT (back when they had Monster Vision) of all places. Then it was Dominion Tank Police from the SciFi channel. After that, it was a while before I came across Gundam Wing which was the next show I watched start to finish. I dabbled in DBZ too but eventually got tired of it. Thanks to Gundam Wing, I found the assorted UC series (which in my opinion are far better, story wise). Now I just watch what's on Cartoon Network on Saturday nights and occasionally buy some movies/shows.

My friend, while my first anime was Rurouni Kenshin, I'll have you know I watched Saber Marionette with my cousins when I was around twelve and liked it. Awkwardness is for the weak :smallamused:.

Anyway, as to the actual topic. As said, the first anime I really watched was Kenshin - I had caught a few random episodes of stuff around the networks, but Kenshin was the first I actually sat down and watched, and wanted to watch each day the same way I did for stuff like Ducktales. I clearly remember getting up at 6:30 AM every Saturday to watch it - to much chagrin of my light-sleeping father.

From there, it was Pokémon, Monster Rancher, and other such shows, until I got a bit older and started getting a bit more into anime proper.

Same for me with Wickie, the only ones who came close to his hero-status were Lucky Luke and Asterix. I did like watching Maja as well, though. And Nils and the wild geese as well.

Captain Tsubasa (not to be confused with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles)

Basically a science fiction story - Japan somehow always wins the World Cup in soccer thanks to an amazing player, the titular Tsubasa. :smallwink:

But hey, it had lots of awesomeness in characters like Tachibana brothers, Tsubasa himself, Kojiro and Wakabayashi (who practiced martial arts to become a better goalkeeper)

There were other good anime shows at the time, like Yattaman (that I mostly remember for that catchy opening theme. "Yattaman! Yattaman! Something something something! Yattaman! Yattaman! (I was born too late to watch Daimos or Tiger Mask)

True anime? I'm pretty sure my first experience was rented Voltron, then Sailor Moon a couple years later. I remember waking up early before school to watch Sailor Moon, haha. Parents bought a couple Dragon Ball movies (I'm glad they cleaned it up a bit from the manga). After that, it was a few years then I started watching Sci-Fi Network's Saturday Anime, and the first one was I think Record of Lodoss War. Continued watching it, saw Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Casshan: Robot Hunter, 8 Man Running, and a bunch of others I'm not sure about. After that, started getting my parents to rent some from Block Buster and eventually bought all of Record of Lodoss War on VHS then NGE. Gundam Wing was in there too. There's been a lot since then.

Really though? What caused it all was watching my brother play Dragon Warrior 2 on the NES. So many dog princess jokes...

I don't understand what you're talking about. There's no such thing as a TRC anime. There's the manga, and there's the OVAs.

It was probably Battle Beyond the Planets (or whatever it was called when it was shown on TV here) in the late 70s. I also devoured Voltron and Robotech when it was on TV, though I wasn't aware of their cultural origins until MUCH later.

The first Anime I ever truly WATCHED, knowing what it was, and such, was Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime to the purists) or Ninja Scroll...not sure which came first. I saw Vampire Hunter D about the same time.

First anime ever.... Dragonball and Saint Seiya the original and possibly Ranma 1/2 (also the first tv series/cartoon/anime/whatever to be banned in my house:smalleek:)

Curious thing it was until somewhat recently (about 5 years) I never understood or knew what was exactly anime. Now I am a die hard fan of it (especially of shonen over the top and ridiculous attacks FTW!!)

Hmmm.....this one makes me think. You know, I bet it was Cowboy Bebop, in college. Good times.

First anime that i was a fanatic about was Robotech.
First seen? probably one of speed racer/voltron/Star Blazers.

Pokemon would be awesome if it didn't have Team Rocket in it.

WHAT? Vicky and Maya were anime? OMG! OMG I say! My mind is blown! WTH!?!?

As for what I was exposed to first, no idea. Could be Genki, Jumaru, Voltron, Saber Rider, Robotech, Clementine, Viking Vicky or Maya... Once again, WHAT THE!? How can it be?!?!?!

As for first one I deliberately followed (on account of finally having a brain developed enough to grasp the concept) would be the one with a bunch of superhero guys in bird suits with a bird looking plane battling what I think was alien invaders led by a guy with a very weird purple mask and cape. Shame I remember so little.

Then there's Space Adventure Cobra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra_%28manga%29), which hasn't been mentioned AT ALL in this thread. I wonder why that is.

Shame I remember so little.Original title was Space Ninja Team Gatchaman (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ScienceNinjaTeamGatchaman), translated as Battle of the Planets and G-Force. Makes an appearance in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on the Wii, was parodied in Megas XLR.

Pokemon would be awesome if it was ONLY Team Rocket. They are the true stars of the show.

Transformers Generation 1 (that’s right the original TV show,)
Thundercats/silver hawks
Robotech/ Macross

That’s right, kickin’ it old school.

edit
there was a few other shows on at the same time like Gatchaman, voltron, speed racer etc. but i don't really remember watching them (well ok voltron vaguely).
