View Full Version : What kind of armor has Roy?

Is there any evidence in any strip of what kind of armor Roy wears? It's clear that Haley has leather, Durkon fullplate, V, Elan & Belkar not at all,but Roy?

It looks like medium armor but I don't have any evidence to support it... :smallsigh:

We can infer from the early episodes (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0024.html) that it's not heavy armour, or Roy would have been making as much noise as Durkon.

The Class/Level Geekery thread says it's magical medium armour. References: strip 5 (Elan outruns Roy), strip 666 (Roy repairing/cleaning his armour), strip 693 (armour registers as magic in V's Detect).

There's a bonus strip in Dungeon Crawlin' Fools (I think it is) where the monster guarding the Dungeon of Dorukan
hits Roy with a "2." Belkar is impressed - sufficiently impressed to abandon the idea of attacking it head-on - and refers to Roy's AC in a way that makes me think it's at least respectable.

If Roy's dex is good-ish (14, say, to think he has a chance of wielding a greatsword while on the back of a flying zombie dragon), and he's wearing a +1 or +2 breastplate, then he'd have an AC of 18-19. Not counting any Rings of Protection or whatnot that have never been mentioned. Very low for his level, I'd think, but it seems to work for him.

I am pretty sure he has medium armor. In order for Roy's carrying of Durkon to have any effect here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0004.html) I'm pretty sure that is the max armor he could have.

None. There is no armor that possesses Roy. Roy, however, does possess some armor.

The forum consensus seems to be that Roy possesses Medium armor, but I don't think it has ever been explicitly stated in the strip.

I'm thinking mithral breastplate, which the single most popular medium armor. Otherwise, he would be just as slow as Durkon, as they would both have 20ft movement EDIT: and there would be no point for Roy to carry him.

P.S.- Elan has a chain shirt (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html)

I just read through all the strips the past few days, and I could have sworn one of the strips mentioned Roy's armor being "heavy". Naturally I have no idea which strip that was :smallyuk: and it does seem a little odd given what has already been mentioned.

Also, Elan certainly had a chainshirt, but I'd venture the guess that he lost it when he was imprisoned, and with his new attire and not least of all new prestige class he's opted for regular clothes.

Till he became a Dashing Swordsman anyway, since then armor interferes with his class abilities (not sure anymore where that was said, but he said it somewhere)

Well. THIS (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0067.html) has always made me believe that Roy wears heavy armour. It doesn't say it out loud. But a mithril breast plate shouldn't really hinder him very much, now should it? He is a decently strong fighter after all. I think that he being able to carry Durkon while running could just as easily be explained by the power of comedy. But then again, the Giant DO tend to put a lot of thought into his work, so I guess that I can't be entirely sure about it either.

Calenestal, you have "http" twice, that's why the link doesn't work.

Unless it's just a joke.

Personally I see him as wearing Half-Plate, why? .. No clue, it just looks Half-Plate'ish to me.

Hey, YOU try jumping over a wall of ice wearing METAL ARMOUR.

Oh, and I'm fairly sure something is very wrong with your link. Seriously.

You can still run 4x your speed in Medium Armor, whereas you can only run 3x your speed in Heavy Armor. As such, there is a difference of 20 feet per round when taking the Run action.

Are you sure it’s “Heavy” as in Armor Category and not just “heavy” as in it weighs a lot?

Medium armor still has a significant Armor Check penalty for untrained jump checks.

Yes I know that it isn't easy jumping in ANY kind of metal armour (no, really, I KNOW, by experience). But it's also a feeling I get about HOW he says it. I get a... gut feeling, that it's some heavy load of metal that he's carrying around as a crude exoskeleton. :smallwink:

But I'm still convinced that were NOT talking about a mithril breast plate. For one thing those have no serious armour check penalties to speak of.
Secondly his armour would hardly be drawn/painted blue if it were. I would expect light grey or paladiny white.

Even more, the only thing in Roy's clothes that looks armourish is the shoulder pads...

Since I can't find the comic in question, I guess I have not way of being certain.

Judging by the fact that he can catch up and jump onto the back of a very large insect, I would say he has medium armor.
