Not sure if this has been done before, probably has. Anyways, post pics of your gaming table, or whatever else you game on. Should be interesting. Ours isn't too special, but I like that it doubles as our living room coffee table.

Unfortunately we never took pictures, but our "table" was actually a floor.

We put a piece of showerboard on the ground, laid down around it, and used it as surface to project upon with the projector we mounted (hung) from the ceiling.

It was pretty awesome. We used RPTools MapTools with my MacBook Pro to do the map, to move tokens etc.

Seeing other people's awesome game tables makes me want to cry. I wish I could afford/make one...
...
Do you have any advice on how to make/obtain a decent game table for... say... under 5 dollars?

Step 1: Enter Kitchen/Dining Room/Living Room/Wherever you keep your biggest table.

Step 2: Clear Table

Step 3: Play DnD.

Touche. Very, very touche (though, I'm not sure that's grammatically correct, there's no better way to point out how thoroughly that statement defeats mine).

I just used the kitchen table... or at college... we've rarely had a game mat and often used little mini-tables, the floor, and laptops...

I now wish I had a really cool gaming table.

I think a big kitchen table with a large grid mat like mine shown above under the glass overlay would be nice.

i want to see some pics people!

If you don't mind playing on the floor, our "showerboard" (literally the stuff shower walls are made out of) wasn't $5 but it was like $10 or $15 and functions as a white board (beyond fun :) ). It's a bit flimsy so you couldn't make it into a table (unless you attached it to something sturdier), but it's really quite awesome.

We got our table for free(practically), we *cough* acquired a table top and legs. We then purchased black and sliver paint, and painted the table black with silver lines and then put several layers of clear coat overtop to protect the paint.

Unfortunately to get the table home we had to cut it in two its 4'x7.5' when the two sides are attached. Although this does allow it to double as a two card tables during parties or as one smaller gaming table.

Ive been thinking about doing that myself. How does the projector work for you? And what does it cost to rent the room? Is it a university or community college?

Back in my freshman year of high school, one of friends had a badass table in his basement (big surprise). It was dark brown wood, circular, really smooth, and came with bucket seats with red leather cushions. It was awesome, but I haven't seen this friend in years and haven't played D&D with him since early high school, so I don't have any pictures.

Oh, and we walked to school barefoot uphill both ways and liked it.

the battle mat on the table is a 28x28 one just for perspective.

How to make the table.

Things you will need
plywood cut to the size you want
white Paint
3 or 4 pencils
pencil sharpener
a t-square (http://www.amazon.com/Empire-Level-410-48-Drywall-T-Square/dp/B000ETUNDQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1260380767&sr=8-1)
clear adhesive shelf paper
a sponge
a roll of tape (I like duck tape and never not have some in the house)

If you go to a HomeDeopt or Lowes you can get a piece of plywood for under $20, I picked mine up for about $15 and if 4x8 is to big they will cut it right there for you for free most of the time. I picked up the clear adhesive shelf paper at the same Lowes I got the plywood from for about $7. The white paint I got from the dollar store for like $2 from the craft section. So my new "gaming table" cost me $24 and I can slide it behind my couch when its not being used or my wife wants the living room table back.

I just dumped the paint on one side of the plywood (if you get the stuff in the big squeeze bottle it will make this easy) and used a damp sponge to spred it all over the table.

Once it was dry in like 3 or 4 hours I got out my t-square (if you don't own one you could buy one then return it when you done) And measured out the grid, then ran the lines still using the t-square. I had to reshapen the pencil after every line but I have an electric pencil shapener so it's not to bad.

Once I had the grid I took my time laying down the shelf paper. This is the hardest part IMHO since you have to go slow and be sure not to get any air bubbles. The shelf paper also did not sick as well as I would have liked thats why I used some duck tape on the edges. The plywood I used was 48" wide and the shelf paper was 18" wide so you can have a 3" over lap.

All told it took me about 5 hours to make not counting the time it took foor the paint to dry. I also picked up a pack of crayola washable markers, they can be wiped off with a damp rag.

Craigslist. $5 is pushing it, but you can find a lot of used furniture there for cheap. Just stay away from "casual encounters."

I had more, but haven't paid my flickr bill so I can't access them. Here are a couple from my Game of Thrones game. The PCs got sieged and the session was going long, so we took photos and reconstructed the battle from those two weeks later.

The table is my dining room table. It's about 6' x 4' and falling apart.

In case anyone's interested I'm trying out some new notation on the map. Building heights are indicated by a series of lines around the building. Each line represents 10 feet. The castle walls are double lined, so they're 20 feet high. The keep is quadruple lined. I think I did this because I had just played through a Link to the Past. It worked well, but took a wihle to draw. If you do your maps in advance I recommend it, but it's not worth the trouble for something you're winging.

Hrm, index cards for mook stats... why didn't I think of that?

Not just mooks and not just stats. All my NPCs go on index cards. One side is name/description/plot summaries. The other is mechanics.

If I'm running a complicated game cards are color coded according to what group the NPC belongs to.

If I'm running a complicated game and have way too much free time to write excessive amounts of plot, NPCs also get stickers added to their cards to indicate which plot(s) they're a part of. I haven't yet decided if this is a useful technique or just an excuse to give Officemax more of my dollars.

Game of Thrones d20. It added social, rank, and reputation mechanics. Combat was a lot more deadly. The book was poorly edited though, so quite a bit was left to group interpretation. There's a new SoIaF RPG out that looks like its own system, but I haven't picked it up.

the battle mat on the table is a 28x28 one just for perspective.

I remember that thread and that is what inspired myself and one of my players to play around with some table designs. Luckly he knows how to draft and build this stuff. But this was the most recent design.

You can always cycle through the pictures to see the progression.

I'm sure if anyone in the chicago land area wants him to make one for ya he would. I can't speak for him on how much it would cost or how much time it would take.

I don't have a special table, but what I use on it is special--LEGO! Most of the LEGO dungeon I made is back at college (my break ends tomorrow), but I do have the remnants of one battle here at home:

The final confrontation with a death knight and his minions from a bird's-eye view! (On the right; the rest is just random pieces to the dungeon.)

My group uses a two-screen system with a laptop and a projector showing the maps on the wall. One of the players is very near-sighted (I think) and so they watch the laptop screen everything is plugged into, while I and everyone else use the huge wall display.

Since I travel by bike/train to get to the house we play at and I DM, I can't bring lots of neat maps or boxes of miniatures. Instead it all just goes onto a 4gb thumb-drive and is loaded up when I arrive. Each player and foe is a layer in Photoshop. Each hidden door/pit is carefully masked by another layer and changes are easy to scribble in. Also, instead of having to worry about what happens to the table or miniatures if we have to stop in the middle of a fight, I can just save the image and load it up next time.

There are times I miss the make-shift miniatures where the chess pieces are the ogres, the blue mancala stones are the archers, the Totoro keychain is the Dire Weasel companion and the Yuan-Ti are the pike-men (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0413.html), but it's often just so much clearer this way.

We don't have much space, so not really a table... Well, my DM gets to sit in a rocking chair facing us with a low, small coffee table for his books and his rolls. We get to sit on the couch and floor and try to keep our books level enough to roll on.

It's... cozy. :smallamused:

Legos are awesome. I wanted to do that for my campaign, but didn't have the funds to start a collection from scratch. All of my childhood legos have long since vanished.
