Hello all

A while back whenever I made new D'n'D characters I would use an online fantasy name generator (the name of which now escapes me). Now that I have a new comp, I forgot to copy the favourite over, and now I'm without it.

Can anyone recommend any good fantasy name generators? Specifically ones which list any meanings behind the names.

Not a fantasy name generator, but a historical name generator is over at Behind the Name (http://www.behindthename.com/random). I use it alot for names of human NPCs.

The two main sites I use are Seventh Sanctum (http://www.seventhsanctum.com/) and Serendipity (http://nine.frenchboys.net/). Both have more than just fantasy name generators. There was a third, but I either ran into the same problem you did or it went off-line.

I have a couple, though none really give you a meaning:

http://chaoticshiny.com/namemix.php

I second the recommendation of Seventh Sanctum. He has some awesome stuff there.

This guy's lets you choose by race: http://donjon.bin.sh/name/

Tons of name generators here: http://nine.frenchboys.net/

I also recommend Seventh Sanctum.

I've also gotten some good names out of these two

This is what I use, but the names are more realistic then fantasy.

My random tables site (www.apolitical.info/webgame/tables) has lots of name tables (in the 'Personalising Characters' section). You have to roll 'by hand', but you can pick the table that best fits your campaign world. Some tables have the meanings and some don't.

Have you considered automating your tables? The coding isn't too hard.

In general, I really like Yafnag - Fantasy Name Generator (http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&ved=0CAgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdicelog.com%2Fyafnagen&rct=j&q=yafnag+name+generator&ei=7NFbS-qzE4_i7APaxOT-Dw&usg=AFQjCNF4vBptX2T90eiSBc9ctJvpg6ZCsQ).

There's a great list compiled over at Enworld (http://www.enworld.org/forum/plots-places/203309-name-resources-those-who-have-trouble-naming-their-rogues-villians-heroes.html), too.

I thought about it, but automatic tables (like those at www.random-generator.com) are usually much more elaborate than ones that are meant to be used by hand.

I just did a table inspired by part of your 'Tavern Tables' by the way.

Cool! Glad to see people are enjoying it.

My first generators weren't any more elaborate than dice tables. But once I realized what the code could do, they started getting more and more complicated. I think you'll find that to be true if you start automating yours. Whether that's a benefit or a downside to you, I don't know.

Another reason is that I know some people use tables as lists, picking something that appeals to them.

I went to a book store. Looked in the reference section and found books about writing. Found a name book.
