Much simpler than my last pricing request. I'm playing with 2 different options, and I'd like some input on how to price them. The general concept is a ring that functions similar to a greater metamagic rod, but with limitations and/or drawbacks in exchange for more uses per day.

Idea 1: Element-specific Metamagic Rings
Idea 2: Non-specific Metamagic Rings
For both ideas, activating a ring uses a move action (essentially making casting a standard action spell a full-round action).

Idea 1:

Metamagic Ring (Maximize), Fire: Allows you to apply the metamagic maximize to any spell dealing with fire or light (regardless of whether it has the respective descriptor - for example, searing light qualifies for this ring) without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 5 points of fire damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Maximize), Water: Allows you to apply the metamagic maximize to any spell dealing with water or cold without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 5 points of cold damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Maximize), Air: Allows you to apply the metamagic maximize to any spell dealing with air or electricity without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 5 points of electricity damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Maximize), Earth: Allows you to apply the metamagic maximize to any spell dealing with earth or acid without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 5 points of acid damage per level of the spell to the caster.

Metamagic Ring (Still&Silent), Fire: Allows you to apply the metamagics still and silent simultaneously to any spell dealing with fire or light (regardless of whether it has the respective descriptor - for example, searing light qualifies for this ring) without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 3 points of fire damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Still&Silent), Water: Allows you to apply the metamagics still and silent simultaneously to any spell dealing with water or cold without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 3 points of cold damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Still&Silent), Air: Allows you to apply the metamagics still and silent simultaneously to any spell dealing with air or electricity without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 3 points of electricity damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Still&Silent), Earth: Allows you to apply the metamagics still and silent simultaneously to any spell dealing with earth or acid without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 3 points of acid damage per level of the spell to the caster.

Metamagic Ring (Extend), Fire: Allows you to apply the metamagic extend to any spell dealing with fire or light (regardless of whether it has the respective descriptor) without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 1 point of fire damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Extend), Water: Allows you to apply the metamagic extend to any spell dealing with water or cold without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 1 point of cold damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Extend), Air: Allows you to apply the metamagic extend to any spell dealing with air or electricity without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 1 point of electricity damage per level of the spell to the caster.
Metamagic Ring (Extend), Earth: Allows you to apply the metamagic extend to any spell dealing with earth or acid without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 1 point of acid damage per level of the spell to the caster.

Idea 2:

Metamagic Ring (Maximize): Allows you to apply the metamagic maximize to any spell without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 5 points of damage per level of the spell to the caster. This damage is fire for fire and light spells, cold for water and cold spells, electric for air and electric spells, acid for earth and acid spells, sonic for sonic and mind affecting spells, force for force spells, negative energy for death and fear spells, and physical that is not subject to damage reduction for all other spells.
Metamagic Ring (Still&Silent): Allows you to apply the metamagics silent and still simultaneously to any spell without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 3 points of damage per level of the spell to the caster. This damage is fire for fire and light spells, cold for water and cold spells, electric for air and electric spells, acid for earth and acid spells, sonic for sonic and mind affecting spells, force for force spells, negative energy for death and fear spells, and physical that is not subject to damage reduction for all other spells.
Metamagic Ring (Extend): Allows you to apply the metamagic extend to any spell without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. However, a magical backlash occurs each time, dealing 1 point of damage per level of the spell to the caster. This damage is fire for fire and light spells, cold for water and cold spells, electric for air and electric spells, acid for earth and acid spells, sonic for sonic and mind affecting spells, force for force spells, negative energy for death and fear spells, and physical that is not subject to damage reduction for all other spells.

Ones that have to be element specific regardless of which choice I go with:

Metamagic Ring (Substitution), Fire: Any elemental (fire, cold, electric, or acid) spell can be have the metamagic energy substitution (fire) applied to it 6/day. This causes a backlash of 5 points of fire damage.
Metamagic Ring (Substitution), Cold: Any elemental (fire, cold, electric, or acid) spell can be have the metamagic energy substitution (cold) applied to it 6/day. This causes a backlash of 5 points of cold damage.
Metamagic Ring (Substitution), Electric: Any elemental (fire, cold, electric, or acid) spell can be have the metamagic energy substitution (electricity) applied to it 6/day. This causes a backlash of 5 points of electricity damage.
Metamagic Ring (Substitution), Acid: Any elemental (fire, cold, electric, or acid) spell can be have the metamagic energy substitution (acid) applied to it 6/day. This causes a backlash of 5 points of acid damage.

Metamagic Ring (Admixture), Fire: Any elemental (fire, cold, electric, or acid) spell can be have the metamagic energy admixture (fire) applied to it without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. This causes a backlash of 7 points of fire damage per level of the spell.
Metamagic Ring (Admixture), Cold: Any elemental (fire, cold, electric, or acid) spell can be have the metamagic energy admixture (cold) applied to it without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. This causes a backlash of 7 points of cold damage per level of the spell.
Metamagic Ring (Admixture), Electric: Any elemental (fire, cold, electric, or acid) spell can be have the metamagic energy admixture (electricity) applied to it without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. This causes a backlash of 7 points of electricity damage per level of the spell.
Metamagic Ring (Admixture), Acid: Any elemental (fire, cold, electric, or acid) spell can be have the metamagic energy admixture (acid) applied to it without increasing the spell slot used 6/day. This causes a backlash of 7 points of acid damage per level of the spell.

And then, following the same rules as the ones above, what about a Metamagic Ring (Quicken) or Metamagic Ring (Quicken) that is element specific? That would have a backlash of 7 points of damage per level of the spell.

I would reccomend making the backlash variable, for example 1d8 per spell level.

Can the user negate the backlash with energy resistance or immunity? That could be an issue. And limiting it to one energy type doesn't seem like much of a disadvantage, since you can simply pick the ring(s) that matches the spells you have prepared. The main disadvantage seems to be that the ring takes up a ring slot. The main advantage is that it doesn't take time to draw or put away.

I'm tempted to keep things simple and also err on the conservative side: Price the rings like the rods, keeping them 3/day and so forth. Require a move action to activate the ring, to make up for the time it takes to draw or put away a rod. If this ends up being too much, so that no one ever wants a ring, then a price break of 10% may be reasonable.

Preparing spells all of one element on a given day may be a drawback in and of itself.
