Just out of curiosity, the rules page state that threads not posted to after a month and a half constitute "thread necromancy"

Is this a hard and fast rule, or open to interpretation?

Hard and fast rule. Necromancy is not allowed and will get a thread locked.

Edit: When did it get reduced from 3 months?

Mael -- you've only mentioned half the rule. Here's the rule:

Thread Necromancy
Bringing a thread back from “the dead.” If a thread has fallen to page three and hasn’t been posted in for a month and a half, don’t post to it. Start a new topic if you want to discuss the subject.

Both pieces work together to determine if an action was necromancy or not. If there's a thread that's two months old, for example, but still resides on the second page then it's OK to post to that thread. Now, granted, I don't know if any of the forums around here has slow enough traffic that could cause that condition. But it's theoretically possible.

But what if it is 1 month old and fell to page three because of a large number of recent posts?

Getting to page three takes at least a few days. If no-one's posted in that time they probably aren't going to. And if they are, then ideally you start a new thread and link to the old one.

That doesn't implicate the rule, which is conjunctive. If it's both older than six weeks since the last post and on page three or farther back, it's too old. Make a new thread and link to or quote parts of the old one. Or, if you really need the old one back, PM a mod.

We tend to allow you to continue an old thread if it's a PbP coming of hiatus or your homebrew, which you now want to add to. But ask first.

This is a pretty straightforward rule, and you can safely assume that all of our Forum Rules are hard-and-fast rules.
