It's the approach of caution - same thing with the "save the whales" thing. We only know of a certain population of them, but there could easily be more. If we wipe out that population, and there aren't more, then another species has died off. If we preserve them, and then find another population of them, it's sort of a relief that they're not as bad off as we thought.

Also, it takes a while to explore the ocean, which means a lot of funding that would have to be taken from other (more important) programs.

We'd never see a live one anywhere near the surface. They live 800 meters (~half a mile) below sea level, where the pressure is roughly 875 times that of what's surrounding you right now, or about 12,860 pounds per square inch.

Okay, so help me out here. The picture on the wiki of that sculpin looks like a normalish fish. The first picture looks like the thing exploded or somehow otherwise got itself turned inside out.

When I see the first pic, I want to destroy the thing--not just kill, but burn the carcass and bury it deep deep underground--because it's hideous and triggers that part of the brain that wants to preserve my body from harm. If that's their poster child, the cause is DOOMED. Now, if they'd just show the wiki picture (still not attractive), there'd be a lot more support I imagine, or at least a lot less, "ewww, my gawd that's hideous! What is that, some kind of proto-shoggoth?" reactions. Jellyfish inspire less disgust, and I've been stung by one of those (small ones) before.

I know my face looks kinda weird, but I'd like to chime in. I have something to say.

My dad is an ichthyologist who believes that the blobfish isn't facing extinction at all. He says that it's just a way for the ecologists to raise an alarm and stop people from gathering fish. Blobfish just barely can actually be found in any ship's nets, because they leave so deep down the seas. Nobody is also hunting for them because they're not edible.

Lobsters are in a bigger trouble than blobfish. Blobfish are found sporadically, lobsters are being gathered en masse. My father compared it to a man who finds a member of endangered species inside his net inside which were 300 tons of an atlantic cod - when only 100 tons are permitted to be fished at a time according to the rules. Which one is the bigger problem to you? :smalltongue:

Here are some basics of a case that bears some similarities with the current one:

Dad told me that certain species of a Harbour Porpoise have been endangered not because they're being fished for - they're not, at least not on the Baltic (where they sometimes breakthrough from the North Sea and the Atlantic). They're not fish, they're mammals - they have way too grown brains to be caught in nets because of their sensory capabilities. The cause of their death might be a roaming ship, or, lately, because of some idiot blew up a ton of TNT nearby the Porpoises' nest and their acute senses simply went crazy from the explosion, rendering many of them getting caught in those nets. But they're not, in fact, in danger of extinction, yet all sorts of expeditions are being halted just because some people believe that they are.

European Union keeps thinking that Poland is murdering Porpoises and they're under heavy danger. They're supposed to keep track of them through certain scientific means when they catch them. But the number of Porpoises caught by Polish fishermen. So they, logically, simply can't do anything about it. Yet, Poland is, apparently, the greatest murderer of Porpoise of all time, although there haven't been any Porpoises caught lately so Polish ichthyologists just can't do anything about the norms put on by the EU.

Of course, I can't deny that it's also against my father's interests, because his job often involves working on the seas, on a boat, together with fishermen, where he mostly examines the catched fish. So, when ecologists raise a turmoil, it's kinda robbing him away from certain profits that those expeditions bring in. However, in general, the place he works at is not amused, because the blobfish incident is seen as just yet another one of those ecologist tantrums that gets in the way of future fishing endeavors - which is srs business, because, after all, a lot of people eat fish, and we examine them scientifically.

tl;dr: Blobfish aren't endangered. A few cases of them being caught does not an endangered species make. There are certain reasons that make their apparent extinction overlooked.

Of course you do so when you think about it cooking a species(Not beef,chicken,turkey,salmon,bacon,ect) who has done nothing to you and looks sad all the time is none other then plain evil. I don't own an ugly sweater, so, instead, I wore a normal sweater and pinned a picture of a blobfish on the front and back, along with the text "Save the Blobfish!" and "It's so ugly, it's cute!!!" I was asked about it all day! :smalltongue: At least I brought awareness to the plight of the Blobfish! :D
