This is a more character specific class than the last one I made. Feedback welcome!

Heart of Arcana

"I learn about magic, so I can learn about myself."

While the wizards and their kind study formuli to understand magic, sorcerers are naturally gifted. Although many take their gift at face value, some sorcerers become deeply interested in the arcane arts; enough that they wish to study magic in the way a wizard would. For the Heart of Arcana, learning magic is a journey to understanding their own nature, and better harnessing their own powers.

BECOMING A HEART OF ARCANA
The Heart of Arcana begins by studying the basic skills of magic, such as Spellcraft. The most important step for them, however, is to learn to stop relying exclusively on their feelings, and to intellectualize the process of magic use.

Weapon Proficiencies: The Heart of Arcana gains no additional proficiencies.

Arcane Science (Su)
The first step in the study of magic for the Heart of Arcana is to learn to use magic without relying on their natural instincts, but to instead learn the rational principles of the wizard. The Heart of Arcana can cast spells in a way similar to wizard, using their Intelligence to manipulate magic. The only difference is that the magic they are drawing upon is from their self. The Deep Ritual draws upon reserves of magic the Heart of Arcana did not know they had, and can be used to cast any spell up to a maximum level equal to the Intelligence of the caster minus 10. The Deep Ritual can not be used to cast a spell the sorcerer would not normally be able to cast using their Charisma.

The Deep Ritual can be performed on any spell that would normally take a full-round or less to cast, and requires no special components beyond what the spell normally requires, except time. The caster must have a spell slot of the required level available to them. The ritual requires a round per level of the spell to cast, plus one round, and it requires absolute concentration from the caster. Any interruption that would prompt a concentration check automatically causes the ritual to fail as if the concentration check failed. If the ritual is completed, then the spell is cast, and they make a Spellcraft check with a DC equal to 10 + twice the level of the spell. If successful, they cast the spell without using up any of their daily spell slot allowance. If they fail, then the spell slot is expended. If the spell uses multiple spell slots, each is rolled for individually.

Spell slots must be available or else the ritual can not be performed. Meta-magic feats may be applied freely to spells if they are possessed or if the caster possesses a magic item that grants them. The Heart of Arcana can also use the ritual to cast spells that come from other sources (such as a runestaff or knowstone), as long as the spell draws upon their own spell slots, and not charges from item (such as with scroll or wand).

The Heart of Arcana must have a high enough intelligence to cast the spell (Intelligence must at least 10 points higher than spell level) and Intelligence is used as the spellcasting attribute for everything dealing with the spell, including DC. The caster is still considered a sorcerer, however.

Arcane Tradition (Su)
The second step in studying magic for the Heart of Arcana is to begin learning the beliefs and traditions of wizards. The way wizards think reveal an entirely new world-view and idea about how magic works. By learning the imperfect formuli by which normal wizards manipulate the forces of creation, a Heart of Arcana becomes more able to cast spells as a wizard would. A Heart of Arcana's spell diary works similarly to a wizard's spellbook, but is magically enchanted and very personal to the sorcerer, as the process of writing in it requires them to mix small amounts of their own blood into the ink. The prices involved in keeping a spell diary are the same as those for keeping a spellbook.

Upon getting their first spell diary, the sorcerer may add all the spells they know to it. They may also copy spells into it from scrolls and other spellbooks, and wizards and others spellbook users may copy spells from them. They do not gain spells for free when advancing in level as a wizard does, but when they first gain this ability they can copy a number of new spells to their diary equal to their Intelligence bonus.

Unlike a typical spellbook, a sorcerer can cast a spell directly from their spell diary, but only by using the Deep Ritual. In this way, a sorcerer can cast many spells they do not know in the traditional sense, though they still must appear on their spell list. A spell may be added to the diary even if the Heart of Arcana is not intelligent enough to be able to use the ritual to cast it. The Heart of Arcana can keep multiple diaries if they have the necessary funds.

Arcane Beauty (Su)
The next step in the learning process for the Heart of Arcana is to learn about all forms of magic, and become more adept in the skill of using it. Here they start applying their knowledge of magic to focus their feelings about magic. The result is a rational feeling of magic, and an intuitive sense of the flow of magic even when they don't understand it fully. The Heart of Arcana can apply their Intelligence bonus to their Use Magic Device skill (in addition to their Charisma bonus) and can apply their Charisma bonus to their Spellcraft skill (in addition to their Intelligence bonus).

The Heart of Arcana also learns to sense magic more easily. They may detect magical auras at will as if using the Arcane Sight spell, but with the limitation that they must concentrate and their range can not be greater than their normal range of vision (maximum 120'). In addition, by concentrating and examining a magic item in their possession for 1 minute, they may learn about it as per the identify spell by making a successful Use Magic Device check at DC 25. Failure means the Heart of Arcana can not try again via this method until they gain a character level.

Arcane Body (Su)
At the half-way point in the Heart of Arcana's journey, they begin to turn the attention inward to the magic potential within their body. This begins with them tapping into new reserves of magical energy in their flesh and blood. They may now add their a bonus equal to their Intelligence bonus to their charisma for determining bonus spells per day. In addition, they may now use level 0 spells at will.

Arcane Mind (Su)
The Heart of Arcana soon turns their attention to their mind, and sharpens their understanding of the powers within. They gain a number of bonus 0 level spells known equal to their Intelligence bonus. In addition, they gain a bonus spell known at each spell level from level 1 up to a maximum equal to their Intelligence - 10 or level 9, which ever is lower. These bonus spells operate as normal sorcerer spells.

Arcane Soul (Su)
As the Heart of Arcana unlocks more power within their self, they realize that they have no real limitations to their magic, just limitations to what they know. They may now prepare spells as a wizard would using any spell in their diary, provided they have an Intelligence equal to at least the level of the spell + 10. Spell slots used for prepared spells can not be used for spontaneous spells, and any number of spontaneous slots may be used for prepared spells. The Heart of Arcana can prepare a number of cantrips equal to the number of spell slots they would have if they didn't have unlimited cantrip casting.

The Heart of Arcana now qualifies as a spontaneous and a prepared caster for all purposes, including prestige class requirements. When a spell is prepared, it uses the spellcasters intelligence for determination of DC. Spells can be prepared with meta-magic effects, but at casting time they still require the sorcerer to take a full-round action to cast, unless they have an ability that allows them to cast normal spells with meta-magic effects without extending casting time. They can also prepare spells that were previously limited to wizards, including those spells that influence prepared spells such as Mage's Lucubration, or any other spell that was limited to wizards. Those spells must be prepared, and can not be among of their known sorcerer spells.

The Heart of Arcana can now perform the High Ritual. With their spell diary in hand, the Heart of Arcana can cast any spell listed in their book as a full-round action, requiring both the standard action and move-action of the Heart of Arcana, but not actually taking until the next round to complete (similar to how sorcerers cast meta-magic spells). Using this ability raises the spell level of the spell by 3 levels, so that it uses a higher spell slot in the same way a meta-magic spell would. This is not a meta-magic feat, however, and abilities that affect meta-magic feats do not apply to it. The High Ritual remains difficult to cast, and any distraction automatically causes the ritual to fail. At the end of the High Ritual, the Heart of Arcana must make a Spellcraft check against a DC of 10 + twice the level of the spell. If successful, the spell is cast. Casting spells this way uses spell slots, whether the ritual is successful or not.

PLAYING A HEART OF ARCANA
The Heart of Arcana is interested in learning about magic, which is often a good reason to go adventuring. Self-discovery is vitally important to them, but they learn to use magic for many purposes, not simply those involved in adventuring and combat.

Because the journey of a Heart of Arcana is a journey of self-discovery, where they are on their journey tends to influence who they are. The journey is divided in two triumvirates, the Triumvirate of Magic and the Triumvirate of Self, which make up the 6 levels of this class.

During the Arcane Science part of their journey, the Heart of Arcana is busy trying to figure out how magic works. They will also spend every spare coin they have on equipment and strange ingredients. At the DM's discretion, the Heart of Arcana may be required to use spell components as a wizard would through this stage of development.

While learning the Arcane Tradition, Hearts of Arcana become greatly interested in meeting normal wizards so that they can ask them long, involved questions. They will begin hording books and information, more than they will actually get the chance to actually read. They will often spend long hours experimenting with magic, and it is not uncommon for them to start screwing up very common magical tasks and very simple spells, as they try to use new methods to do very simple things. At the DM's discretion, the Heart of Arcana may have a 1 in 12 of miscasting (and losing) any spell they attempt to spontaneously cast during this period of their development.

As the Heart of Arcana learns to perceive Arcane Beauty, they become extremely distracted with all the magic in the world. They tend to act aloof and slightly crazed as they study seemingly random objects. Mirrors, in particular, fascinate them, as they see the magic coming from their own body. At the DM's discretion, the Heart of Arcana may experience a -4 penalty to spot and listen rolls during this period of time, and they are always surprised.

Halfway through their development, the Heart of Arcana embarks on the Triumvirate of Self, and learns more about who they are.

As they proceed through the trials of the Arcane Body, the Heart of Arcana begins spending long periods of time fasting and sometimes also blood letting. A fascination with body modification, such as piercings and tattoos, is also common. At the DM's discretion, the Heart of Arcana is weakened while on this level, and receives a -2 penalty to all fortitude saving throws. They may also experience an alignment shift towards the chaotic end of the spectrum.

As the Heart of Arcana begins to study the power of the Arcane Mind, they spend long periods of time thinking about things. Meditation is common, as is extreme curiosity. The Heart of Arcana has a sudden urge to try and organize everything in a way they can understand it, meticulous cleanliness is common. The desire - and inability - to understand everything is overwhelming, the Hear of Arcana is prone to bouts of depression when they can't understand everything that's going on around them. At the DM's discretion, the Heart of Arcana receives a -4 penalty to all knowledge skills. They may also experience an alignment shift towards the lawful end of the spectrum.

In the final stage of the Heart of Arcana, they realize they know enough, and that it's time to start using their powers for something more than figuring their selves out. In the final stage, the Arcane Soul is finally calm, and any penalties they previously received disappear. They're alignment returns to what it was originally.

Combat: Hearts of Arcana fight in the same way sorcerers and wizards do, often staying at range and using magic to buff allies or blast enemies.
Advancement: With the ability to cast prepared and spontaneous spells, the Heart of Arcana can effectively choose any other arcane prestige class to advance into. As their powers maximize flexibility, a good next step for such a character is to choose a class that will focus their powers on a specific task, as the burden of specialization will be greatly reduced by their powers gain in this class.
Resources: The best resources for a Heart of Arcana would be wizards. Another wizard in their immediate circle of allies can be an invaluable asset to them, and once they can record their spells in their diary, they can share those spells with those allies.

HEARTS OF ARCANA IN THE WORLD
"I saw a sorcerer casting a spell from a book once. Unbelievable! A sorcerer that can read." -unknown elven wizard

Few can tell the difference between a Heart of Arcana and a typical mage, and many don't even understand after the difference is explained to them.
Daily Life: The Heart of Arcana spends a great deal of time researching. Some of this may be in a laboratory, but often it involves personal discovery. Meditation is a common practice, but it is also common for the Heart of Arcana to explore a variety of activities, simply to find out more about their selves. Travel is also a common activity for Hearts of Arcana.
Notables: Some of the greatest sorcerers known have actually been members of this class, but never felt the need to advertise. They know who they are, and that is enough for them.
Organizations: When a Heart of Arcana reaches a level of mastery in their class, they begin to feel the desire to help others and join guilds to help support those making the same journey. These guilds are often hidden to prevent any interference by normal wizards, so sometimes object to their presence, mostly out of prejudice. It is assumed a decent student will find the guild without them advertising. For the teachers of a such a guild, the act of teaching helps solidify their own learning, and students often teacher newer students but once they have mastered the secret of the Arcane Soul, they no longer benefit from being in the guild, and most move on.

NPC Reaction
To most NPC's, the Heart of Arcana is just another spellcaster, but more traditional sorcerers and wizards have more varied reactions. While some sorcerers might be curious, many will wonder why they are bothering with all their studying. Wizards tend to go to extremes; either they embrace the sorcerer as a kindred spirit (though not necessarily an equal) or see them as pathetic imitators.

HEARTS OF ARCANA IN THE GAME
Hearts of Arcana combine the flexibility of casting that goes with the sorcerer with flexibility of choice that goes with the wizard. The result if a character who could be ready for anything, and has a good chance of having the exact spell on hand to solve any problem encountered.
Adaptation: The Heart of Arcana requires little adaptation, although how they are viewed by local mage guilds may become an important point.
Encounters: Hearts of Arcana are not often distinguished from typical wizards or sorcerers, and can be found in situations similar to what you would expect to find those classes in.

Fluff is decent.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
:Sorcerer Level 5
:Knowledge (Arcana) 8
:Spellcraft 8

Entry requirements are easy to make... no reason for a Sorcerer NOT to take this class... but then again Sorcerers need nice things. Still, not advancing spellcasting at first level MIGHT be called for especially given the presence of UMD.

Class Skills
The Heart of Arcana's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Knowledge (all skills, taken individually) (Int), Profession (Wis), Spellcraft (Int) and Use Magic Device (Cha)

All Knowledge skill is good... UMD may be too much.

<Snip>

Saves BAB etc are all fine. My congratulations on breaking the mold and making a 6 level class simply because that was how many abilities you had.

Arcane Ritual (Su)

A very good start... very powerful... but as I said, Sorcerers need nice things. Wait... is this or is this not limited to the spells they know? Because I initially assumed it wasn't limited, but the next ability makes it seem like it is.

Meta-magic feats may be applied freely to spells, but only if the caster is intelligent enough to cast a spell at the new level.

MIGHT want to make that "intellegent and charismatic" to close a loophole... then again, it might be a GOOD loophole.
DEFINITELY want to make it "...metamagic feats the caster possesses or can access through a magic item (such as a metamagic rod)..." so they don't get every metamagic feat in existence for free.

Arcane Writing (Su)
The second step in studying magic is for the Heart of Arcana to begin learning the formuli by which normal wizards manipulate the forces of creation. A sorcerer's spell diary works similarly to a wizard's spellbook, but is magically enchanted and very personal to the sorcerer, as the process of writing in it requires them to mix small amounts of their own blood into the ink.
The prices involved in keeping a spell diary are the same as those for keeping a spellbook.
Upon getting their spell diary, the sorcerer may add all the spells they know to it, and a number of additional spells equal to their intelligence bonus. They may also copy spells into it from scrolls and other spellbooks, and wizards and other Hearts of Arcana may copy spells from them. They do not gain spells for free when advancing in level as a wizard does.
Unlike a typical spellbook, a sorcerer can cast a spell directly from their spell diary, but only by using the ritual. In this way, a sorcerer can cast many spells they do not know in the traditional sense, though they still must appear on their spell list. A spell may be added to the diary even if the Heart of Arcana is not intelligent enough to be able to use the ritual to
cast it. The Heart of Arcane can keep multiple diaries if they have the necessary funds.
The sorcerer also gain the Scribe Scroll feat for free. If they have it already, they may substitute another item creation or meta-magic feat for it.

Not seeing hardly any advantage to scribing the spells they already know... guess it means they can let someone copy them, or retain them for other purposes even if they replace them with a different spell upon level-up (perhaps after leaving this class... can you replace spells using PrC levels?).

Arcane Reading (Su)
The next step in the learning process for the Heart of Arcana is to learn about all forms of magic, and become more adept in the skill of using it. The Heart of Arcana can apply their Intelligence bonus to their Use Magic Device skill and can apply their Charisma bonus to their Spellcraft skill. The Heart of Arcana also learns to sense magic more easily. They may detect magic at
will, simply by concentrating, and by examining a magic item for 1 minute, they may learn about it as per the identify spell by making a successful Use Magic Item check at DC 25.

Pretty nice in general...
Underlined a Typo... At the very least I wouldn't allow retries on that UMD to emulate Identify.

Arcane Body (Su)
At the half-way point in the Heart of Arcana's journey, they begin to turn the attention inward to the magic potential within their body. This begins with them tapping into new reserves of magical energy in their blood and bone. They may now add their intelligence - 10 to the charisma for determining bonus spells per day. In addition, they may now use level 0 spells at will.

Fun... this is another point in favor of this thing losing a caster level... maybe at class level 3 or 4 rather than 1 though... maybe not in point-buy games thought since this class has some MAD to it...

Arcane Mind (Su)
The Heart of Arcana soon turns their attention to their mind, and sharpens their understanding of the powers with in. They gain a number of bonus 0 level spells known equal to their intelligence bonus. In addition, they gain a bonus spell known at each spell level up to a maximum equal to their intelligence - 10.

Again... very nice, hardly world shattering, since most members of this PrC will already have all their non-combat spells that they gained after taking their last level in Sorcerer in their book by this point, rather than casting them in the usual way.

Arcane Soul (Su)
As the Heart of Arcana unlocks more power within their self, they realize that they no real limitations to their magic, just limitations to what they know. The Heart of Arcana gains the Arcana Preparation feat for free (or another meta-magic feat if they
have it already) and may now prepare spells as a wizard would using any spell in their diary, provided they have an intelligence equal to at least the level of the spell + 10. Spells used for prepared spells can not be used for spontaneous spells, and any number of spontaneous slots may be used for prepared spells. The Hear of Arcana now qualifies as a spontaneous and a prepared caster. When a spell is prepared, it uses the spellcasters intelligence for determination of DC.
The Arcane Soul also has the ability to perform a spontaneous ritual. With their spell diary in hand, the Heart of Arcana can cast any spell listed in their book. This is a full-round action, requiring both the standard action and move-action of the Heart of Arcana, but not actually taking until the next round to complete (similar to how sorcerers cast meta-magic spells). Using this ability raises the spell level of the spell by 2, so that it uses a higher spell slot in the same way a meta-magic spell would.

Wow... I LIKE it, but maybe should ALSO lose a caster level here...

Anyone know how this whole thing stacks up against Ultimate Magus?

All Knowledge skill is good... UMD may be too much.

Is UMD really that good a skill to have as a class skill? I wanted to include at least one skill that wasn't from the wizard's list, and it made sense to me: they are exploring the nature of magic. It also gave me something to tie their identify ability to later.

Saves BAB etc are all fine. My congratulations on breaking the mold and making a 6 level class simply because that was how many abilities you had.

Thank you, I always thought 6 was a good stopping point, because it's when attack and all saves go up a point. I might have to stretch it out to 7 if the class is too powerful, though.

A very good start... very powerful... but as I said, Sorcerers need nice things. Wait... is this or is this not limited to the spells they know? Because I initially assumed it wasn't limited, but the next ability makes it seem like it is.

It's limited to what the sorcerer knows at first, yes, it would be too powerful to get all at once.

MIGHT want to make that "intellegent and charismatic" to close a loophole... then again, it might be a GOOD loophole.

Yeah, that could be fun.

Not seeing hardly any advantage to scribing the spells they already know... guess it means they can let someone copy them, or retain them for other purposes even if they replace them with a different spell upon level-up (perhaps after leaving this class... can you replace spells using PrC levels?).

It's so they can swap with other casters. I'm currently playing a sorcerer in a group with a wizard, and he wants my spells SO bad.

Pretty nice in general...
Underlined a Typo... At the very least I wouldn't allow retries on that UMD to emulate Identify.

I'm really trying to avoid the level penalty, there are so few good full-casting PrC's for Sorcerers. Also, I'm trying to mirror Mage of the Arcane Order.

Unlimited Level 0 spells doesn't seem like a big deal to me. In Pathfinder it's automatic for all spellcasting classes, and the most commonly used one, Detect Magic, is already free. The number of spells gained will be roughly equal to the Intelligence of the mage - 10. Is that too many? Should I half it?

MAD is huge limitation of this class. Most Sorcerer guidebooks say that Int is a sorcerers 4th most important attribute after Cha, Dex, and Con.

Again... very nice, hardly world shattering, since most members of this PrC will already have all their non-combat spells that they gained after taking their last level in Sorcerer in their book by this point, rather than casting them in the usual way.

Yeah, this is very much a 'utility mage' PrC. It's not supposed to be extremely powerful.

Wow... I LIKE it, but maybe should ALSO lose a caster level here...

I'm trying to avoid losing caster levels. What if I chopped this into 2 levels? First, prepared spells. Second, rapid ritual. I can also make Spontaneous Caster a prerequisite, making it harder to enter the class and lowering the benefit of this by itself (they can already prepare spells, now they can do it from their book). Maybe Scribe Scroll should be a prerequisite as well, rather than a bonus feat? Both feats fit with the 'learning to be a wizard' theme.
Maybe it should be a 3 level penalty for the rapid ritual spell?

So, Arcane Ritual doesn't do anything at the level you get it. Next level, you can start using it, but at level 1 of Heart of Arcana it's just a slower way to cast spells you already know. That should be changed.

This class is easy to fall in to as a sorcerer, and it's certainly better than straight sorcerer. So the only real cost is the opportunity cost of not taking a different PrC... because I don't like that and want caster 20 to be a valid option, I want one of these six levels to not advance casting.

On one hand, this gives sorcerers what they want: more spells known, through various methods. On the other, it increases MAD, so it's not out-and-out crazy good.

tl;dr make Arcane Ritual useful or reshuffle abilities around, and maybe drop a caster level.

Arcane Ritual can be very powerful if you choose the right spells. All day buffing spells can be cast for free 65% of the time, and healing spells (like Undying Vigor of the Dragonlords) can give the character unlimited healing outside of combat. Transportation becomes free as well, and also the various 'shelter' spells (Rope Trick). Basically, all non-combat spell uses become close to free, which is a big deal.

I've move Arcane Preparation from a level six bonus feat to a prerequisite and added concentration 8 (which was supposed to be there before).

I really want to avoid dropping a caster level. What specifically strikes you as too powerful?

So I've cleaned up some of the language and some of the powers were toned down a bit. I also decided to add in some 'level penalty' options to represent the struggle of the Heart of Arcana as they proceed. Thoughts?

I removed the spontaneous caster feat prerequisite because it's a useless feat, and it is no longer made redundant by the high ritual (the original reason for including it). I made Scribe Scroll a prerequisite instead, rather than granting it as a bonus feat at level 2. Also, fixed some spelling mistakes.
