ENTROPIC ADEPT

"Sometimes, you need to look at what lies between. The great collection of madness that will overtake us all in time."

As spellcasters plumb the depths of divine power, some of the most advanced gain attunement to the great nothingness they say lies at the center of the universe. These students use this connection to develop strange powers, sacrificing some of their normal studies. Doing so requires magical energies that would otherwise be reserved for their spells, but they see their new abilities as worth the cost.

BECOMING AN ENTROPIC ADEPT
To qualify to become an Entropic Adept, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.

Skills: Knowledge (the planes) 5 ranks, Knowledge (arcana) 5 ranks, Spellcraft 5 ranks
Spells: Able to cast 3rd-level arcane or divine spells.

Class Skills

The entropic adept's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Heal (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (arcana) (Int), Knowledge (local) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Profession (Wis), and Spellcraft (Int). See Chapter 4 of the Player's Handbook for skill descriptions.

Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier.

Class Abilities:

Spell Energies: The entropic adept uses the spells he knows and has access to power their abilities. When a class ability makes reference to using the energies of a spell of X level, the entropic adept uses spells, as if he had cast them, whose levels add up to at least X. For example, if the entropic adept needed to use the energies of a spell of 5th level, she could sacrifice one 5th level spell, a 2nd and a 3rd level spell, or 5 1st level spells. Three 0th level spells count as one 1st level spell for these purposes.

Shard of Entropy (Su): As a full-round action, the entropic adept can, by using the energies of a spell of at least first level, create a shard of pure blackness. This tiny piece of pure chaos, the eventual madness that will overtake the whole of reality, is infinitely black, and sharp as any blade. Against objects, the shard deals 3d6 points of damage, bypassing the object's hardness. Against creatures, the entropic adept must make a ranged touch attack to hit, and if successful the shard deals 3d6 points of damage to the target (Fortitude half, DC 12 + the entropic adept's main spellcasting stat modifier). The shard appears in any square adjacent to the entropomancer when it is created, and it can be used to attack on the round it is formed. Attacking with a shard of entropy is a standard action. Moving the shard into a new square is a move action.

The shard of entropy lurches, jumps, and bounces around the square it's in. Any creature who passes through the shard's square takes damage as if the shard struck him (Fortitude half), as does any creature that's in the same square as the shard at the beginning of the entropic adept's turn.

Augments: The entropic adept can augment her shards with further spell energies. These are known as augments, separated into three categories: Adept, Expert, and Master by the amount of spell energies required to place them into a shard of entropy.

To augment a shard, the entropic adept must take a standard action, and the shard must be within her reach.

Spells per Day/Spells Known: Whenever the entropic adept gains a level, she gains spells per day and spells known as if she had gained a level in her base spellcasting class. If she had more than one spellcasting class before gaining levels as an entropic adept, she must choose which one to increase her spellcasting in.

Entropic Field (Su): As a standard action, an entropic adept can surround herself with a field of invisible, entropic energy. The field extends in a 5-foot-per-entropic adept-level radius, centered on the entropic adept. The entropic adept cannot cast spells while her entropic field is surrounding her. Once per round, as an immediate action, when the line of effect of a spell passes through her Entropic Field, the entropic adept can expend spell energies equal to the spell's level to counterspell the spell.

At 5th level, the entropic field becomes strong enough to warp the laws of probability. Once per round, as a free action, the entropomancer can force a character within the field (including herself) to reroll an attack, save, or check. The entropomancer demands the reroll after she knows whether the attack, save, or check succeeded or failed, but before the exact consequences have been calculated and applied. The result of the reroll takes precedence, even if it's worse than the original roll.

At 7th level, the entropic adept can use telekinesis, as the spell, as a standard action, targeted on anything within his entropic field.

At 9th level, the entropic adept can, once a round as an immediate action, teleport herself or another target within her entropic field up to 15ft.

Rapid Shards: There comes a time when the entropic adept may need a Shard of Entropy and need it now. His skill at manipulating the void has increased, so at the cost of more spell energy, a shard is always available when it is needed. By expending 3 levels of spell energies, the entropic adept can create a Shard of Entropy as an immediate action.

Control Sphere (Su): The entropic adept has the ability to control a sphere of annihilation (described on page 279 of the Dungeon Master's Guide) as if he were using a talisman of the sphere, and the entropic adept is personally unaffected by a sphere of annihilation, which passes through him as if his square was completely empty.
