I remember hearing about this a while ago, although I'm not sure when it was originally noticed. The internet chipped in and sent him a care package of survival tools before the original turn-on date - stuff he could use to save the human race once the aliens inevitably came through.

Yes, there was a crowbar.

I had the opposite reaction when I first saw that picture way back when.

I was filled with great hope for the future. No matter what horrible abominations break through the space/time wound caused by our mad science, the one Free Man will be there to push them right back.
Mark your calendars. 2012 will be the year videogames become reality.

I always thought that Gordon Freeman was the kind of guy who was more of a fixer. He fixes by annihilating every obsta... dang it!

Actually, that photo with the crowbar was created when a game site online gathered money to buy the crowbar, the headcrab plushie and a half-life strategy guide and send them to the guy.

EDIT: Oh my god, I never saw that photo shoot before - that is HILARIOUS. They should totally name one of any new particles they may discover after him. Or Freema - wait, same guy, never mind.
