Well, the Depression Thread is depressing and nobody is PEACHin' my homebrew, so it's time to discuss something a little simpler.

Sandwiches!

If you regularly consume sandwiches (those who don't, you're all blasphemers), what do you put in/on them?

I, personally, enjoy pastrami, mustard, and muenster cheese on a sub loaf as a cold or hot sandwich. Also good is hot chicken, provolone, and onions.

Honestly, just onions. You can't go wrong with them. Like virgin's blood (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0625.html).

So, playgrounders. How do you eat sandwiches?

I would probably eat my own foot with enough mustard and pickles on it. Hot sauces and salsas of all kinds are also welcome additions.

In fact, I don't really care what else is on the sandwich if it has these things. Enough hot sauce makes everything taste the same, so who cares? If they made bread that already tasted that way, I'd just eat that.

Depends on what it's for. If I'm packing my lunch at school, I normally do a normal peanut butter sandwich, as it doesn't need to be refrigerated. Sometimes I'll toss some chocolate morsels on there as well.

I think my favorite sandwich is a fried wrap. That is you put whatever combination of lunch meat, cheese, and dressing you have laying around onto a tortilla roll, and in a frying pan that has some olive oil in it, sear until the bread's crispy. I think my favorite one thus far had to be Italian dressing, provolone cheese, corned beef, pastrami, and horseradish.

My top-rated sandwich would be a mature cheddar cheese on brown bread, with Branston pickle, a little mayonnaise and tomato chutney.

Close second comes a poached egg on brown, with a poor man's hollandaise sauce (mustard and mayonnaise).

Peanut butter and chocolate spread are good on white bread or an (English) muffin as a sweet sandwich.

Also, Nutella, peanut butter, marshmallow cream, and banana slices on white bread or sourdough. It's like a mouth orgasm.

I enjoy lots of types of sandwiches. My personal favorite is probably either a classic reuben, or a fully loaded sub from my local sandwich shop. The man behind the counter is not a mortal, he is a greek god of bread, vegetables, and meats.

The full thing is fresh french bread, salami, capricola, mozarrella, lettuce, tomato (grows em himself, none of the storebought cardboard), olives, onions, avocado, horseradish mayo, stone ground mustard, oil, vinegar, and some sauce he won't tell me what it is, but is sort of orangeish (not thousand island).

Actually, golentan, the sandwich that I've been eating regularly for a few months was inspired by you. I don't know if you remember, but it came from what you wrote in a vegetarian thread when I mentioned I was craving meat.

That one aside, which has become too precious to me to debase by describing (it is full of wonderful things), (real) peanut butter and sliced apple on a good wheaty bread is wonderful.

Two even slices of Pretzle Bread (soft pretzle in loaf form), toast till crisp but not yet browning. Slatther mayo on each piece, liberaly coating with favored hot sauce (the hotter the better, home made always wins out over store bought). Set pieces aside to cool.

Fry up two eggs. Break yolks and continue to cook untill no longer runny in either yolk or white. Place one egg each on one piece of bread. Add two slices of provolone cheese on top of eggs to melt off residual heat (you can use other cheese but keep in mind to use a mellow flavor so as not to confuse the taste buds to much). Once done, place pepperoni on both sides. Once finished, bring both pieces togather, eat and enjoy.

Yakisoba noodles in a hot dog bun covered in pickled ginger.

Quick Yakisoba recipe
One pack ramen. Cook untill soft. Remove and add three tb honey, a splash of vermouth (white) or sake and two splashs of soy (dark soy if you want a richer flavor. Light soy for a saltier noodle). Cook untill noodles are slightly hard, less then 6 minutes on medium heat or untill your preference has been met

One of my favorites is lox on a toasted poppy seed bagel with butter (no cream cheese!)

Another is peanut butter on dark pumpernickel raisen bread/roll.

I'm also quite fond of a turkey club, with lots of mayo built in.

I kind of separate out burgers and sandwiches in my mind. Buns don't count, only breads and rolls. Probably silly.

Hm, the delicious reuben I'm accustomed to is swiss, pastrami and sauerkraut on buttered rye, but to each their own I suppose. I'm a fan of tuna melts, tuna with pickles and all sorts of spices/mustards mixed in, melted sharp cheddar on top, delicious.

Instead of PBn'J I generally go for PB and honey on toasted California black bread. It's hard to find a sandwich that toasting doesn't make better

Personally, one of my favourites is lettuce (not iceberg) or spinach, capsicum, cucumber, cheddar and a touch of mayo, in real bread (actual type matters little, provided it doesn't come in a violently pink bag), toasted enough to make it warm but not enough to change the taste of the cheese. Fried eggs with the yolks intact and soft. Melt Colby jack cheese or mexican blend on top. Put on one slice toasted whole grain bread, salsa to liking and add the other piece of toasted bread. Now thats good.

For you balonga lovers: toast some whole grain bread and put two slices preferred balonga not that crap that tastes like hot dogs and then melt some colby or cheddar on it. Place jalapenos on top and then put a blend of brown mustard and mayo on the other slice of bread.

I usually prefer a sandwich from Subway or Quiznos, but homemade are okay as well.

Breads I like: Submarine sandwich shaped. regular whole wheat, herbs and cheese, honey, garlic. I also enjoy flatbreads.

Meats: Just about any. Favour goes to tuna or chicken/turkey breast. A well seasoned cold cut is also tasty.

Vegetables and fruit: Lettuce, plenty of tomato, apple, pear, strawberry cucumbers, bell peppers, avocados, onions, spinach.

Cheeses: Just about any. I haven't tried many cheeses, other than cheddar and mozzarella, but as long as it is semi hard, melts well and not too overpowering in taste it can go on my sandwich.

Garnishes: Olives and capers are alright but they are not absolutely necessary.

Sauces: I usually go for light mayonnaise (or Miracle Whip) and Honey Mustard. Sauces and other condiments can really make or break a sammich.

Toasted? Not necessary, although it can make a sandwich better, especially if it has plenty of cheese that melts well.

Probably my favorite sandwich ever has to be from Subway; Italian herbs & cheese with cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, black olives and mayonnaise. No meat. No accompaniments necessary.

There's this place about at about a 15 minute drive away called Potbelly that makes some pretty epic sandwiches too.

For made-at-home sandwiches, I'm an eternal fan of BLTs. Nothing fancy, just bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on toasted bread.

While the Reuben sandwich remains my favorite sandwich of all time, it is made all the better by this one little Jewish deli outside of Philadelphia, as these people exchange pastrami for corned beef and a new modified sauce for the russian dressing. It is the best sandwich in the entire world.

Then again, the classic TF2 Sandvich is pretty delicious as well.

Toronto style smoked meat sandwich. Nothing better.

Step one: go to Caplanski's, and order it.

Take 2 slices of challa, which is a very thick Jewish bread. Take a HUUUGE hunk of smoked meat, smoked for days with the spice mix your great grandfather used when he came to Canada. Cut the smoked meat (the fattier the better!) into thick slices, and layer on challa. Slap on spicy, seedy mustard. Done. Serve with a pickle and cherry cola.

Unless I'm at subway, where I get: Pepperoni and salami, with pepper jack cheese, on Italian Herb and Cheese bread, with lettuce, tomato, mustard, mayo, oil, and vinegar.
But when i'm at home making a sandwich, its usually bologna and yellow (or possible white) american cheese, or salami and provolone. both go on white break with yellow or brown mustard and mayo.

My rules of sammiches:

1) All sammiches must be toasted. Even if eaten cold, they must have been toasted at some point to melt the cheese.

2) Real bread must be used. Preferably something along the lines of a baguette, challah roll, or bagel. Sliced bread from the market need not apply.

3) Cheese is a must. Usually cheddar or habenero jack.

4) Sauce is also a must, but this must be matched with the meat. Roast beef gets mayo, ham gets honey mustard.

I know I certainly couldn't eat a sandwich called a manwich without a very serious giggles fit before or while eating it.

But on topic sort of, another nice sandwich is a really old cheddar of other strong cheese, with sliced apples(sometimes cooked though fresh is nice too gives the sandwich a nice crunch) With a few slices of ham or turkey, or Canadian back bacon.

An apple grilled cheese with meat if you will. Bread is better toasted, alternatively it also makes a lovely panini

Hm, I'd forgotten about provolone. I have a love-hate relationship with that cheese, and thus do not usually stock it in my fridge. But when I was in college, I loved it on a sammich, so long as it was properly melted. Unmelted provolone is nasty!

mayonnaise & basil pesto (sort of spread so that they mix together), a few twists off of a black pepper grinder and a dash of Tony Chacere's Creole Seasoning (basically salt and red, white, and black pepper) on the two pieces of breads' mayonnaise-based covering followed by some cut romano cheese slices, sliced tomato, and some chopped up romaine lettuce makes a nice sammich.

Even better if you toast the bread enough and assemble it quickly enough that it's still got some warmth while you're eating it. Although, I haven't tried doing a little bit by melting the cheese on it to one of the pieces of bread and doing the mayo and pesto on the other..

I guess I'll just do that next then.

On cheeses: ...A nice sharp cheddar (aged up from what they sell in stores is a necessity here, needs to be at least a year old before you nom it, really) goes with almost anything from my experience.

And if you're not eating sharp cheddar you might as well be eating amurrican.

Smoked salmon, green pesto, rocket, tomato slices is a pretty good one. A bit of shaved parmesan helps too.

As far as basic lettuce + meat sandwiches go, my favorite is mortadella, iceberg, tomato and creme fraiche dressing. Substituting the mortadella for parma ham and artichokes is nice too.

And finally, you can never go wrong with roast beef, piccalilly and horseradish! A classic.

Usually, "tomato ketchup" is used to distinguish it from the types of ketchup that uses apples (or even bananas) as an ingredient to make it coarser/thicker. Or at least that's my experience. But no, I think all ketchup is tomato-based.

I like putting butter on one slice of Publix's White Mountain Bread (TM) and brown mustard on the other. Two slices of roast beef on each, and I throw the buttered half onto a panini. Put Teriyaki sauce (lots) on it, throw the other half on, and squish it panini-style. Delicious.
Alternatively, Mellow Mushroom's Steak and cheese hoagie, with just steak cheese and onions.

I believe before tomatoes were known to europeans, or at least before they were known to be edible (people thought they were poisonous like deadly nightshade), there were varieties of lemon and mushroom ketchup.

But yeah, banana ketchup is something quite popular with my best friend and his dad.

Does goat's cheese taste any better than goat's milk? I was given goat's milk and asked how it tasted. The person giving it to me responded "Like licking a goat," though she was merely jesting, as a vegetarian who absolutely loves goat's milk.

I've never had goat's milk, but I love me some goat's cheese. It's very strongly flavoured, usually quite salty, and has a different texture to cow-based cheeses. It goes very well with olives, peppers and aubergine, so I suspect that Zocelot's sandwich was eye-wateringly delicious.

I am currently in possession of melted cheddar cheese on toast with ham and pickle. It is heavenly. Only thing that would make it more heavenly would be more pickle and it being a toastie rather than just cheese on toast.
