Abandon hope, all ye who enter here...

...at least that's what the first part of the sign says hanging outside the shoppe of magikal delights called Quest Buy. The entire sign reads: Abandon hope, all ye who enter here of finding works not of the finest quality. Cute, really. The shoppe is located in a planar metropolis named The Hub, and is actually in the Nobles district. Therefore it should come as no surprise that, despite the simple decor of the store-front, the inside could only be described as posh. Everything from the jewel-encrusted lamps to the display cases made possibly out of walls of force just screams lavish to you. The carpeting is ornate, made out of who knows what exotic materials, and there is even an inviting-looking couch for weary customers to rest in.

An efreeti is behind the counter, willing to show all of the wondrous items hanging from the walls and laying within the displays. All of them quality, the efreeti assures you. There appears to be a tome floating about the place, examining some of the wares. A smaller version of an Ember Guard* communicates in a strange language with the efreeti. Pelor has instructed you to come to this gleaming metropolis to meet your counterparts...those you're supposed to work together with to achieve your impossible-sounding objective. You may or may not be the first one of the group there. If you have time, feel free to buy and sell anything and everything here.

Thoros stumbles into the shop, clutching his head.

"Drink! I need drink!" he moans, collapsing into a broken heap on the couch.

Goddamn hangovers...

After being dropped off outside by Faloriel, Zeth says goodbye and walks calmly into the shop, where he begins window-shopping. If he sees anything particularly interesting, he'll consider asking about it, but it's fairly obvious that he's killing time.

The efreeti's glowing blue eyes seem to linger for a few seconds over the drunken human sprawled out on the couch. "I do apologize, sir, but you appear to have stumbled into the wrong place. There is a temple dedicated to Pelor just down the street that is very good with...removing intoxication. Are you perhaps...looking for a temple of Pelor?"

Bloody odd place, Fritz thought, eying the shoppe before stepping over the threshold. His nostrils flare, sniffing the air. Alcohol. Bad alcohol. Fritz knew the good from the bad, and this was the scent of cheap, cheap stuff. He raises his eyebrows upon seeing the drunken beggar, watching the exchange with the efreeti with a mixture of amusement and contempt.

The drunken man stands up. After a few tries he manages to extract a holy symbol of Pelor from his belt pocket.

"I just came from the temple damnit! I don't want to get less drunk! I need more beer! More beer! In the name of Pelor, give me something to drink!"

Collapsing on the couch once more, he eyes the shop's other patrons.

"Trust me, if you'd been given the same assignment I've been, you'd want to drink too," he says, by way of explanation.

The genie with the brick-red skin, sall horns, and jutting tusks still presents a friendly and professional demeanor...for now. "The one things approaching the 'drinks' you ask for, sir, is the flasks of caustic acid that we usually to wizards for their experiments. Other liquids we have for sale are magical potions...for example potions that can cure one of Blindness/Deafness, or Disease, or Paralysis, or even...poison. Are you sure you're not interested in those instead? I'm sure whatever task you've been given can wait until after you've recovered."

When he reaches the counter, he pays for the 50gp worth of acid, and asks the efreet how much planar forks to the Nine Hells would cost.

Tall, red and incendiary over there behind the the counter is more than happy to take the fifty gold pieces, although it's less 'take' and more 'he passes his outstretched palm facing downwards over the pile of coins and they magically disappear.' As for the planar forks...

"They are forged from Baatorian green steel mined from deep shafts on Avernus. It has been blessed by the holy waters from Pelor's realm, as to ensure that no unholiness discomforts the owner. It is most useful for the plane-shifting to Avernus. Nornally these would be a bit pricey, but for today we have a special discount for these planar forks if you buy in sets of 4 or more, and for upstanding individuals affiliated with Pelor."

"I do believe that I qualify as an upstandin' individual associated with Pelor, displaying a wooden disk with a sun etched into it as he says this, "and as it so happens, I am also in need o' one o' them forks. Perhaps we coul' split the costs?". With that, he turns toward the elf and extends his hand. "Me name's Leon Abbot. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, mr...?

Fritz has much the same reaction as the efreeti to Thoros' claim. "You're a Gray Guard? he says incredulously. "Well, I suppose that the stories aren't all true." Still, thought Fritz, the man must be more than a simple drunk: he knew about the mission. Odd, thought Fritz; these other two fellows seem much more the type – they're sober, after all. Still, Fritz would need a fork.

"Fritz Bluebottle, gentlemen. I find myself in need of a planar fork. My affiliation with Pelor is... recent, but I am most obviously an individual of the highest quality, and would be delighted to divide the costs."

"So, we're all here then? Isn't that...convenient." A momentary scowl darkens his face.Calm down, old man. I'm sure Pelor does no' want ye dead...even if everyone else does. "Really?"

Zeth considers. He had left the crew of the Beast of Burden under friendly terms when he was ninety-nine, which would make it about one hundred and thirty-four years ago that he had last seen it. The whole crew would probably be different - except, perhaps, for Captain Jea Riftkin herself. As an elan, there was no way of knowing how old Riftkin was and little to no chance that she'd expired of old age, but there was always an element of danger to planar travel, and the odds may have caught up with even the captain in the last hundred years...

But that assumes that 134 years has passed releative to the *crew*... In all of that planar travel, they could have wound up on a plane with an altered time flow. Zeth mused on that. Either way, it would be nice to see the captain again, if she's still in command.

"Do you know who the Beast of Burden's captain was, and their stated destination?" Zeth asks carefully.

Even as he hands over his money to the shopkeeper, Thoros remarks.

"You know people who routinely make trips to the Nine hells?"

Avernus only has one type of rain: Fireballs." He gives a polite laugh. "Well, at least I would if I were not already unaffected by heat like I am. OOC: Yeah, I saw after I posted. I fixed it, and I did have enough to buy the tome. With my clerical error, I had 32,485 gold to spend. Minus 250 for the fork (32,235) and 1,500 for the tome (30,735). Then, my mace cost 30,000 more than I thought, leaving me with (735). I was under the impression that the masterwork cost was factored into the enhancement cost, but if I'm wrong, that'll still leave me with (435). Avernus...the entryway to Baator. The scene that greets you is one of blood viscera. A nearby river is red, and almost appears coagulated thanks to the near-constant influx of blood shed by devils and demons. Overhead, there appears to be multitudes of meteors burning as they streak through the atmosphere. One of you land on a small lump that could be a marroon-colored rock or just a blood-coated skull. In general the landscape can only be described as desolate.

Although none of that really catches your attention at this time as there are other, more IMMEDIATE concerns...in the form of large, SCARY-looking demons and devils...locked in combat with each other.

On the devil side:A) A creature as big as an ogre, with a vaguely humanoid shape. Hideous scales sheathe its body. Huge wings and a snaking, prehensile tail add to its intimidating appearance. It wields a mean-looking spiked chain.

B) Cloaked in fire and as tall as two humans, this hulking montser spreads its batlike wings and cracks its whiplike tail. Great scales cover its body like armor. It has large fans that drip with a hissing venom.

On the demon side: A) 4 hulking (but Medium-sized) monsters that look at first like a powerfully muscled orangutan, yet the cruelty that burns in their theumy red eyes signal hateful intelligence. Their visage are dominated each by a pair of oversized fangs that jut from its lower jaw. Their fur are rusty red and matted with filth.

B) The fiend stands 12 ft. tall and wields a massive greataxe carved with jagged runes and a glittering red ruby set into the base of its shaft. It has crimson skin, clawed hands, and the head of a leering demonic hyena with silver eyes and great slavering fangs. A wirthing snake protrudes from the side of the demon'sneck, coiling and hissing menacingly.

C) A towering (Huge) figure strides across the blasted terrain, its splayed feet sending tremors through the ground with each step. Its overly long arms are thick as tree trunks, and it has a leering, demonic bison's head with forward sweeping horns. As it appraoches, it drops to all fours, lumbering over the ground on its knuckles like a building-sized gorilla.

D) A lithe and graceful woman clad in a chain shirt...or would be if not for the sharp talons, vacant white eyes, cloven feet, oh and the four writhing, ten-foot-long, sting-tipped tentacles protruding from her sides.
There are also corpses of a large number of various devils and demons strewn about. You guys are in the THICK of the battle. Please make a Will save everyone vs the fear aura(s). Just one roll from everyone is fine. Remember that you're all within 10 feet of a Paladin. Still waiting for Leon Abbot's init and Knowledge rolls as well.

For Fritz Bluebottle:All you manage to identify are the 4 Bar-Lguras. You know that they are standard Tanari'ris that often serve as scouts for other demonic forces. You also know that they can pounce on foes with great ferocity, clawing and biting before its victim can even react. You know that their DR can be overcome bu Good weapons or Cold Iron weapons, and that they do have some spell resistance.

For Zeth:You identify all of them, although some you know less about than others.

Devil A is a Horned Devil. You know that it has standard Baatezu traits, DR that is only penetrated by a weapon that is Good AND Silver. You know it has regeneration that is only overcome by the same in terms of weaponry and spells with the Good descriptor. You know it has SR, various SLAs, a fear aura, and the ability to Stun enemies with its spiked chain.

Devil B is a Pit Fiend. You know that it has standard Baatezu traits, DR that is only penetrated by a weapon that is Good AND Silver. You know it has regeneration that is only overcome by the same in terms of weaponry and spells with the Good descriptor. You know it has SR, various SLAs, a fear aura and other nasties but you can't quite remember at the moment, given the fact that you're busy trying to make the save vs the fear aura.

Demon A are 4 Bar-Lguras [FC 1]. They have various SLAs in cluding Darkness, Cause Fear, Dispel Magic, See Invisibility, Telekinesis, Disguise Self, Invisibility, Major Image, and Greater Teleport. They can also see invisible foes, and unlike other demons, they can transport other creatures with its abduction ability, even if those creatures are unwilling.

Demon B is a Molydeus [FC 1]. You know they have standard tanar'ri traits, spell resistance, and some form of damage reduction. You know they heal at a ridiculous fast rate. They are comparable to the balors in power. Some serve as generals in Abyssal armies.

Demon C is a Goristro [FC 1]. You know they are among the largest tanar'ri and are used as living seige engines or battle platforms by other demons. Not only does a goristro possess the standard resistances and immunities of a tanar'ri, but also it heals its own wounds remarkably fast. They are capable of clambering along walls like a spider or floating up into the air using levitation. Against fors they still can't reach, they hurl massive boulders. They have DR overcome by Cold Iron OR Good, and they do have Spell Resistance.

Demon D is a Lilitu [FC 1]. You know that they are, in a sense, evolved versions of Succubi. Besides the usual tanar'ri traits, you know they have DR that is overcome by cold iron OR Good weapons. They have SR, although any sort of magic of a Divine nature has a better chance of piercing the spell resistance and affecting the Lilitu. You also know that lilitus can cast divine spells like a cleric can, in addition to their slew of SLAs. A lilitu takes great delight in corrupting priests into unknowing worshipers of demon lords. They have poisonous stingers that cloud the senses and leech away life energy.

Round 1:

Fritz is the only one who fails the save vs Fear. He is Panicked for 18 rounds and will run away from the Pit Fiend at top speed (unless someone suppresses or dispels the effect).

The Pit Fiend narrows its eyes, and within moments a fireball springs forth from his finger and crashes upon an area close to him, engulfing the 4 Bar-Lguras, the Molydeus, the Lilitu, and himself. The 4 Bar-Lguras scream in pain as the fire washes over them (26 damage each). The Lilitu just grunts lightly as she nimble dodges the worst of the wave (8 damage). The Molydeus laughs as the heat wave simply...disperses as it gets close to him.

Not done yet, the Pit Fiend continues its assault! It says a glutteral word in Inferno translating roughly into "Stun" and the Lilitu suddenly drops the unholy symbol it was wielding, and appears to be seeing stars.

The Horned devilmakes a flurry of attacks with its spiked chain and bite and tail slap against the GIGANTIC Goristro before it, but the Goristro's tough hide causes all but one of its attacks (a spiked chain attack) to bounce off harmlessly. The Goristro seems a momentarily shaken by the chain attack (24 damage), but shakes it off quickly.

Leon's turn!

Better the demons target me than my allies. After all, I'm a paladin and I signed up for this Thoros thinks, moving towards the most obvious threat. Grabbing a bottle of alcohol from his pack, he mixes it with a potion of enlarge person and downs it in a single swig. Even as he rapidly expands in size, Thoros yells out an insult.

"Look here, ya demons! Pelor's gonna kick your ass!"

Deliberately opening up his guard, Thoros hopes to lure the demons into a rash attack.

5-ft stepping towards the Goristro and using a standard action to drink a bottle of alcohol, a move action to drink a potion of enlarge person, as well as activating Rolibar's Gambit. Taking INT damage and increasing Dex by 4. (8 Alcohol Points)

I get one AoO if people hit me on an attack, and one AoO and one trip attempt if the Goristo misses. I'll be using all my AoOs to make trip attempts. If the opponent is prone already I'll just AoO him normally.

1) You sure you want to do this? First of all, you don't threaten anyone right now. With your 5ft. reach, the Goristro can hit you with impunity and you can'tdo jack to him him back given his 15ft. reach.

2) I don't see how you'd get an AoO *and* a trip attempt. Usually you'd need a feat called Elusive Target or somethingto have that kind of ability right? Robilar's Gambit only makes them provoke once from you (which you CAN use as a trip attempt of course)

3) The Goristro is humongous and seems to be made of 110% muscle. You gather that trying to trip this guy may be a losing proposition.

And this is what you get for posting at 12 am in the morning - sleep addled retardation. I totally meant to drink a potion of Enlarge person using my move action, which, after moving a 5ft step SE, would have me threatening the Goristro. Of course, this also means less Alcohol Points... which means I'm editing my earlier post.

The extra trip attempt comes from Defensive Throw, it's on my char sheet and in CWar. Basically if your dodge target misses you you get a free trip attempt.

Did I not say Dodge Target? Gah, stupid stupid me.

EDIT: And about the 110% manliness of the Goristo, in that case I'll just AoO him, though Defensive Throw specifically only lets me trip him so I'll try anyway.

EDITED EDIT: I'm going off to sleep now, so in case this revised series of events still results in me doing something stupid, feel free to delay my initiative. Hopefully in the morning I will be less stupidz

The (now enlarged) drunken master enters into apparently an open posture, and insults the dim-witted and easily-angered Goristro.

The molydeus orders its dancing axe to strike at the Pit Fiend as it also wades in with its claws and bites. The Pit Fiend's tough hide makes all but one attack (axe) to glance off harmlessly! The Lilitu stands there, stunned.

The Goristro looks angry (when does it not?), and stoops down low to GORE the paladin! The first slam hits, and Thoros attempts to use the opening he created to take the huge demon down using leverage. However, he underestimates just how SKILLED the demon is, despite how dim-witted it looks. He fails to take the demon down, and that gives the Goristro another opening with which to attack the paladin!

Thoros, undaunted, manages to attack the demon back again, although this time it was a normal attack instead of one designed to take down the monster. The demon has one final attack with its horns, and once again Thoros whacks the demon back! Thoros is looking extremely hurt right now.

The 4 Bar'Lguras only attempt to touch the Pit Fiend for some reason.

OOC: Molydeus hits Pit Fiend for 14 damage.

Goristro performs a full-attack (2 slams) on Thoros:

The first slam attack hits for 43 damage. This provokes from Thoros who tries to Trip the Goristro. However, Thoros's Strength bonus + BAB + 1d20 can't beat the Goristro's Str bonus + BAB + 10 even on a 20, so Thoros fails, which provokes from the Goristro. The Goristro takes his AoO as a normal slam attack, and hits Thoros for 42 damage. This provokes from Thoros who decides to try a normal attack. It hits for 4 damage after DR (unless your attack counts as Good or Cold Iron).

Then the Goristro tries to gore Thoros with its second attack, and luckily that misses. Thoros hits back with an AoO, which does 6 damage after DR.

The 4 Bar'Lguras attempt to Abduct the Pit Fiend, who makes the saves easily.
To lostlittlebear: For the future, could you also put in your posts the damage you do after your size increases and all that so I don't have to calculate it myself each time? :-p Remember that Enlarge Person lowers your Dex by 2 and increases your Strength by 2 (which increases damage), and your 1d10 Unarmed becomes 2d8 unarmed thanks to the size increase. You should do 2d8+1d4+9 in your current state. Don't forget to update how many potions, HP, and booze you have left, etc.

Zeth flies back and up, and is now approximately 35 ft. up in the air and 35 ft. back from his starting position.

Fritz runs north, terrified (can he run 90 ft. a round? He is small so only has a 20move speed right? So Run is 60 ft. for him?

The Pit Fiend stares intently at the Goristro and the Molydeus. The Goristro ignores the stare, but the Molydeus appears to stare back and do nothing else...not even moving. The Pit Fiend fires off another ball of fire at the speed of thought, this time completely burning the 4 Bar'Lguras to crispiness. The corpses turn to cinder and goo. The Molydeus appears to not move at ALL to try to dodge the flames...and it washes over him, burning him a bit. The Lilitu, even though stunned, still manages to avoid the worst of the flames.

Then, surprisingly, the Pit Fiend shouts something out...in COMMON! "CUT OFF HIS HEAD. HE'S HELD! PLEASE! YOU'LL HAVE MY GRATITUDE." as he points at the Molydeus A normally proud Pit Fiend...desperately asking for help? All of you but Fritz can see that the devil is actually holding on to something that doesn't look like a weapon, but you can't quite tell what it is.

The Horned Devil quickly adds, "Big human, kill the one just a few feet behind you. That demon's helpless! I'll deal with the Goristro." And with that he swings his spiked chain again at the Goristro, landing two solid blows and the last glancing off the tough hide. The amazing blows friom the cruel-looking chain appears to leave the Goristro seeing stars!

Pit Fiend: Standard Action to use Mass Hold Person SLA. Doesn't get pass SR of Goristro, but the Molydeus isn't so lucky and even fails the save. Swift action to use Quickened Fireball SLA, killing the 4 Bar'Lguras. Molydeus can't move and didn't roll a natural 20 so he gets burned for the full amount (30 after fire resistance). Lilitu makes Reflex save and only takes 10 fire damage. Pit Fiend spends Move action asking for help from you guys.

Horned Devil: Full-attack on the Goristro, dealing 18 and 21 damage. Goristro fails a fort save and is stunned for an unknown number of rounds.

Thoros's turn...which I'll do for him on the next post.

Thoros: HP 69/107 AC 30 (33 vs Goristro. Smite+Dodge) Fort 22 Ref 16 (-2 Dex from Enlarge Person) Will 17 SIX Alcohol points left.
I'll assume that Thoros will still spend 2 pts to gain 4 Str so that he'll be extra sure of killing the Molydeus. Oh by the way, don't forget that giving yourself Dex above 18 won't give you more AC, since your max Dex bonus is +4 with your armor.
Seeing an opportunity to end one large threat, Thoros carefully but quickly scuttles back a few feet and aims his broken bottle carefully. With extreme concentration, he JABS the bottle into the Molydeus's helpless neck with all his might! The molydeus spurts ichor from the HUGE wound for a second...and then his entire body melts into goo.

"HAH! Take THAT!" Turning around, he points to the Goristro, his bottle suddenly glowing with holy energy. "You're NEXT!"

The Goristro and the Lilitu still appear to be seeing stars, and don't do anything except try to clear their heads. Fritz is still too scared to do anything but run. Zeth's turn!
Thoros 5 ft. steps to get into position to perform a Coup-de-grace on the Molydeus as a full-round action. The Goristro is Stunned and can't perform an AoO to try to disrupt Thoros. Thoros power attacks for 12 and the attack is too much and the Molydeus rolls a natural 1 on the Fort save and DIES! Thoros then designates the Gorsitro for the target of Smite Evil.

ooc - not a crit. Improvised weapons have a 20/x2 crit range. Also, you need to read the OOC posts. You copied and pasted your previous info, which is wrong. Your HP, AC, AC vs Goristro, Reflex save, and attack rolls are wrong. It should be a +24 total bonus right now thanks. It *was* 23, but the fact that you're large drops it to 22. But you're flanking the Goristro, which ups it to 24. The Goristro is Stunned dropping its AC by 2 so it's easier to hit but that's on my end. But the most important part is: Where is your third attack? You get 2 iteratives you know with BAB 12.

Here's what your stat line should look like: Thoros: HP 69/107 AC 30 (33 vs Goristro. Smite+Dodge) Fort 22 Ref 16 (-2 Dex from Enlarge Person) Will 17 FOUR Alcohol points left.

The Pit Fiend nods. "Yes, you four will have to come with us to see Bel. If you can convince him that you're useful enough to be allowed to roam Avernus, then so be it, but we can't just let you wander off right now. Your performace here should cast you in a favourable light."

It takes several hours for you all to reach a...well...it can only be described a fortress, but you all feel this doesn't really do the compound in question enough justice. Those of you that make a DC 20 Knowledge (the planes) check know that this is called the Bronze Citadel, and it is an ever-expanding fortress that serves as the principal bulwark against demonic invasion. There are multiple work crews of least devils continually slaving to repair the citadel and build new walls and war marchines in concentric circles around the original citadel.

Urzguz the Pit Fiend siply looks at the other devils, and there seems to be a nod between them as they communicate wordlessly and let the mortals through without hassle. (This is all assuming that Fritz turns OFF his telepathy static interference like a smart little gnome. You probably don't want to show off that power unless you're in battle or need to prevent a devil from crying out for help). "Impressive, isn't it mortals? The Bronze Citadel has stood for untold eons against the endless demonic horde, just as the Dark Eight have been leading us victoriously in battle for the same period of time."

Fritz does not know anything more than has been revealed already.

Leon and Zeth know: You know that the complex sprawls across 600 square miles...last you had heard anyways. The place is constantly being expanded and magical relics being added to repel intruders.

Zeth also knows: The Dark Eight each maintains a household within the citadel, and Bel holds strategy meetings withing his inner court with them to discuss upcoming battle.

The walking takes...a while. And at certain points he hands you each a strange device...possibly a focus of some sort that is made with a material best left in the dark. Urzguz then leads you through portals, most likely to shorten the trip. Each time the item appears to be different, if similar.

During the journey, occasionally fireballs appear to crash down from the skies. The devils ignore such things, but those of you not heavily protected from fire had to scurry and find cover, much to the two devils' amusement. Finally you reach a grandiose and large (it has to be very large, in fact, to accomondate the size of the generals) antechamber that has a somewhat gothic feel to it. Gargoyle statues (you think) look down from pedastals up on the wall. Torches eternally lit line the wall at exact intervals of 20 feet.

"Sit here. I will make a request to see Bel." As the Pit Fiend flies over to the other end of this (huge) room, the Horned Devil adds, "We're lucky this business is so important. Normally it could take days for such a request to be granted even for high-ranking Baatezu. But for this, we might be granted an audience in no more than an hour."

Urzguz the Pit Fiend lands on the other end of the room in front a massive double-door which goes all the way from floor to ceiling and looks like it'd require a Titan to push open. Standing on either side of the door is a pair of towering (Large size) humanoid creatures that seem to be formed of brilliant lava covered with crumbling black crust. Flames leap out from the cracks in their crusty skin and wreathe their body in infernal fire. Everyone may make a The Planes check to identify said creatures.

Urzguz appears to converse with a medium-sized figure with feathery black wings. Those of you that make a DC 25 Perception check has good enough eyesight to make out a few details even at this distance.
The figure almost resembles an angel...or a dark version of one. She appears to have pale skin, red hair, and black eyes...and is completely nude.

Since you can make out the details, you can also make a The Planes check to ID this creature.

Zeth: You know that the attractive-looking angel-like figure is actually a Pleasure Devil a.k.a a Brachina, a baatezu seducer. They work to undo servants of the gods, and have a number of SLAs to aid them to this end. Pleasure devils can secret a poison that drives mortals mad. They have higher status than erinyes.

You know that they have regeneration that is bypassed by good-aligned weapons and spells, bu ttheir skin can only be pierced thoroughly by weapons that are good-aligned AND made out of silver.

You know that a brachina has the ability to temporarily gain control of a living creature, and to use its charm abilities to turn foes into allies. Once she has enough allies, a brachina likes to lob fire at the holdouts.

After a time of waiting quietly, Urzguz and the Horned Devil look up, as if hearing an invisible voice. A blacked-winged figure (possibly the same one from before) phases through the door and walks towards the group. At about the same time the two lava creatures start pushing the massive door open, making slow yet steady progress.

When the figure gets close, all of you can see that it is a woman...and very clearly so given her complete lack of clothes and her impossibly-curvy figure. She has pale white skin, long straight red hair, and obsidian-black eyes. Leon can finally see her clearly at this close distance, but he gets distracted momentarily and can't quite remember exactly what his seminary classes said about such a creature...or even the species type. All he knows is that she has an uncanny resemblance to an angel. When she stops next to the group, it is also obvious that she sports a pair of nipple rings, each adorned with a small gem of probably enormous worth.

She speaks, her melodius voice cancelling out some of the Inferno language's glutteral-ness. "Lord Bel will see you now. He awaits the good tidings you will bring. Please follow me." Her gaze seems to linger over Leon and Thoros for a bit longer than the others as her lips curl into a seductive smile.

As she leads you through the now open doors, you all hear Urzguz's voice in your heads. "Make sure to show Lord Bel the proper respects, mortals...if you wish to live. I would advise kneeling before him." On the other side is another large and tall cylindrical chamber. There is a round table easily 20 feet across seemingly made of some ancient stone, and covering it almost completely is one big map, with various markers on it.

Looking intently at one section of the map is a Large fiend, with crimson scales covering it from bestial head to clawed toes. From its backs spread great batlike wings. Foul green venom drips from its teeth, sending up streams of smoke whereever it falls. Cinched around its waist is a beltof a dozen shrieking angel heads (currently silent), their necks neatly severed by the massiveflaming sword the creature holds in its clawed fist.

Urzguz and the Horned Devil immediately go to one knee upon entering the chamber proper. Urzguz says, "My lord Bel, I have returned triumphant with a portion of the portable lab."

You have a chance to react however you wish before the fiend responds.

Zeth takes a knee and shoves all thoughts of the groups long term goals to a back corner of his mind. Bel can likely read thoughts the way we read tavern signs... I hope the others have sense enough to take precautions. Zeth is working on a spell that should keep his mind safe from such intrusions, but it isn't ready yet. In the mean time, the only defense he has prepared is formidable willpower - which he doesn't expect to stand up for long against a real effort on Bel's part. Then again, it's entirely possible Bel just doesn't care enough about hired muscle to go probing, which is our best bet...

The large fiend referred to as Bel takes a look at each of you coolly...and then speaks in a baritone, rumbling voice. He commands simply (in Inferno of course), "Report..." and his presence can be felt deeply as his voice reverberates in your bones.

Urzguz and the Horned Devil remain kneeling as Urzguz says, "My vassals and I infiltrated deep behind enemy lines and slew a foul demon to successfully obtain a portion of this small laboratory. To my dismay, I discovered that the lab hasan enchantment placed upon it tht prevents teleportation of any sort. I fought my out back out, and wisely employed these mortals to assist us in beating back the demonic pursuers. As you can see, the decision is wise as I bring you the lab unharmed." Urzguz presents to Bel an object that looks surprisingly small for a lab. It fits within the palm of his hand. Perhaps it is a collapsable lab?

Bel opens his mouth to speak once again, and some green venom from his mouth drips to the stone floor, causing a brief sizzling sound. "Good. These mortals are useful then?"

Urzguz responds, "Yes, Lord Bel. In more ways than one I'm sure."

Shifting his gace once more on the group, Bel asks, "Your assistance is appreciated, mortals. Now tell me...why have you come to Baator? Are you here to offer your services to fight the demonic horde?"

Remember that if you're telling the truth, then you need to roll Bluff. Telling half-truths just means the enemy has a harder time figuring out the lie. But remember, just because someone might know that you're not telling the whole truth, it doesn't necessarily mean he'll pursue it further if he doesn't particularly care.

Right now, Thoros is trying to pretend to be an uneducated twit who works primarily for treasure. This will require a Perform (acting) roll or a Bluff roll.

Leon Abbot probably speaks a lot of truth within his words, so while he needs to roll Bluff as well, Bel's Sense Motive will have some penalties. (Please roll, both of you)

Note to all: You remember that while Pelor says he's got the demon side handled in terms of what altering the Pact will do, he did NOT specify that in the meantime, before you get the pact, you should try to destabilize the devils' ability to fight the demonic horde. Now, you CAN if you want to, if you think that helping the demons overrun each successive layer of Hell will get you the distraction you need to get the Pact. However, that is exceedingly risky...and there no guarantee that you can get to the pact before the demons have overrun everything.

Those of you that wish to roll Knowledge (The Planes) and/or (Religion) about Bel may do so for information.

The large, intimidating archduke of a fiend scrutinizes each of you again for a few second, an incalculatable look on his face.

"I think you can definitely be of use to me. I will be busy studying the lab that Urzguz brought back, and there are many tasks which needs to be done. For now, I give you two choices, since your group seems to have the capabilities of handling either."

Bel makes a gesture with his hand, and a semi-translucent image (probably illusionary in nature) appears above the large circular table. It shows the unending nearly unstoppable demonic horde. Mass after mass of demons march or fly in one diretion. "We are running short on time. The demons have launched a major offensive, and we can use all the help we can get to delay or inconvenience them until we ferret out their secrets. You four can act as part of a surgical strike team, going behind enemy lines to take out key leadership. Or...you have option two."

With another gesture, the image changes. This time showing some rocks overlooking a polluted, oily river. On said rocks are bedraggled, rubbery-looking individuals...many of them humanoid in shape and appearance. They appear to be moaning. [DC 20 Knowledge (Religion OR The Planes) to identify them as Soul shells] "There are other problems which impede the well-oiled machine of the Baatezu. Lately, I've gotten reports from my bureaucrats that my operation has been receiving less souls than it should be. Gesturing to the pretend-redneck paladin, the imposing fiend says, "Well, it looks like none of you have much of an opinion except this one, so I take it HE's the leader of the group? Well, pitiful though they be, they are indirectly aiding the demons by weakening our battle-readiness. *sigh* So, it looks like you will be striking at key enemy leadership. What I need for you to do is to launch a surprise attack by teleporting into their midst, killing some important demons quickly, and then teleporting back out before you get overwhelmed. Do you think you can do that?"

A few seconds later, you all hear someone walking behind you, yet the heavy, loud doors certainly did not open, since you had not heard it open (it was rather loud when the two lava figures opened it earlier). The nude and statuesque winged-figure that led you in earlier walks straight past all of your kneeling forms, and presents a large stack of parchments to Bel. They stare at each other for a few second before she takes a knee momentarily as well. Then, she rises, and walks back out...phasing through the door completely.

"It looks like you are in luck. You have approximately 6 hours to make your preparations. Urzguz will give you the details after escorting you to a barracks. Serve me well, and you SHALL be rewarded." He stares at Urzguz for about a minute, and then hands him some of the parchments before making a gesture with his hand. Urzguz gets up and says, "Time to go. Follow me quickly."

The MASSIVE double-doors are opened once again with loud creaks and groans, and Urzguz leads you through the maze that is the Bronze Citadel. Fifteen minutes later, he deposits you all in a spartan-looking (as in minimally decorated) barracks. It is very warm, but not to the point where you would be too distracted to rest. "I will give you an overview of your task. There is a Marilith general named Chzzeupit coordinating and directing demonic forces to assault the outer wals of the Bronze Citadel. She is but one portion of a vast army, but she does play an important role: She is coordinating one part of the seige engines and the forces that support such endeavors."

He takes a deep breath and then conjures up some illusionary images of various demons. "Here are the demon forces we expect to be accompanying the general and will be found nearby: Glabrezu, Vrock, Retriever, Bebilith. and of course the ever-present and wretched Dretch." The image hanges to whatever demon he speaks of. "You may not have to fight all of those as you teleport in, and after your 5 hour rest and preparation of spells, I will return and begin to scry on that Marilith. When the Marilith has the least amount of troops protecting her at the time, THAT is when you will use your Teleportation spells and go to her, slay her, and return here. Kill her as quickly as possible, or her troops will respond and overwhelm you. If she falls, the seige forces under her command will not be able to organize in time for their assault."

He then even takes the time to go over the battle capabilities of each demon type mentioned. "These are the capabiities of a typical demon of its type. The ones you actually encounter may have slightly different abilities." The information that the Pit Fiend gives you is detailed enough that you are all fairly familiar with the defenses and offenses of the demons by the time Urzguz is done 20 minutes later.
His details explanations basically gives you all the information in the Monster Manual about said demons.
"Any questions before I let you rest?"

Leon thanked Urzguz for the information. Afterwards, he turns to his comrades. "Would any o' ye like ta join me in a feast? It'll take us abou' an hour ta get through it all, but it's a very fortifying meal, blessed by my patron ta strengthen us in our hours o' need. Some o' us may need it more than others-" He glances at the gnome and pauses briefly. "-but we coul' all benefit from it. And besides, it's very tasty." He begins to pray, and in ten minutes time, a magnificent table appears from the air. If you look closely at the table, you just might be able to make out a sunburst underneath the plates of food piled on the table, but the food looks so good that Leon isn't looking at the table. He sits down on the chair next to the head of the table and digs in.

Heroes Feast. As it turns out, I DID have it prepared! Everyone who chows down gets the following effect.

Every creature partaking of the feast is cured of all diseases, sickness, and nausea; becomes immune to poison for 12 hours; and gains 1d8 temporary hit points +1 point per two caster levels (maximum +10) after imbibing the nectar-like beverage that is part of the feast. The ambrosial food that is consumed grants each creature that partakes a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and Will saves and immunity to fear effects for 12 hours.

The hours you have to rest pass by relatively peacefully. Even the random rashes of fireballs upon the fortress can get comforting after a fashion. The feast invigorates you all, and you sleep well. 5 hours pass, and Urzguz returns. "I hope you all are rested. Prepare your spells well, for even the general alone is a formidable enemy. I will begin the scrying shortly. Any last minute questions?"

Urzguz looks itently at the scrying mirror. "The lieutenants of the general appear to be moving eslewhere. Quickly, try to finish your magical preparations within the next minute or two! I believe you have your chance. When the Marilith is dead, you may teleport back to this room. I will leave a beacon in this room that you can lock on to. It also serves as a signaling device to me when you press this indentation here, telling me that you are back."

You all poof more or less on destination. Go ahead and roll initiative! I'll get the map up later.
