From the SRD:

A rare bard might display a special link to nature and the mysterious world of the fey. Such characters tend to be more aloof and less inspiring than standard bards.

Gain
Animal companion (as druid), nature sense (as druid), resist nature's lure (as druid), wild empathy (as druid).

Lose
Bardic knowledge, inspire courage, inspire competence, inspire greatness, inspire heroics.

Obviously, a bard looking to enhance Inspire Courage wouldn't make this trade. However, I'm thinking of making a spell-oriented bard utilizing this variant. Going into Sublime Chord, I'd basically be a slightly weaker sorcerer in terms of spells, but I'd gain an animal companion.

Is it worth it?

SC doesn't advance AC. Just grab the feat Wild Cohort.

Wild Cohort (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) + Savage Bard (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#bardVariantSavageBard)
Get something with three attacks/round and maybe even get Obtain Familiar and Improved Familiar for a Krenshar. Without much effort you can buff them into the stratosphere, and get Melodic Casting and you can still cast spells without interrupting IC. You can still go into Sublime Chord unhindered and you'll be much better off.
