What are some of the music (be it songs, orchestral themes, general composition et al) that moves you, inspires you, motivates you, saddens you, gladdens you, uplifts you, exults you, edifies you?

It can be any language. I believe music is universal and can touch people irrespective of language or culture. It is the music itself that is so powerful.

I've been listening to ethnicity folk songs of China; there are 56 different ethnicities and each is gifted in music. It's astounding.

Here is a selection. Hope they move you too

The power of hot-blooded epic music emerges!

Rap is a Man's Soul! We Kick Reason to the Curb to Make the Impossible Possible! Open up Your Ears and Listen to Our Team Dai-Gurren Theme!! And then there's Brawl's soundtrack. There's some epic epicry in there.

90% of songs performed by JAM Project or one of their singers. Just click the link in Lord of Rapture's sig.

Also, this vocal version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxquOGtG8iM) of "Fight! Alkaiser!" from Saga Frontier. I've never played the game, but that song is awesome.

The Battle Moon Wars mix of Arcueid's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3J24BeGVTw) from Melty Blood

While on TYPE-MOON, there is of course "EMIYA" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUs8FEsDUZ4) and "Sword of Promised Victory" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tkR_97yF1o) from Fate/stay night (BMW has a good rock remix of the latter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ6hKctXKNE)). The anime adds "Pride of the King of Knights" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr7LzL1Inpk).

The ending theme of Kamen Rider Decade, "Ride the Wind" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho6nmoGd2IM). Gets used as a Theme Music Powerup within the series. For that matter, the opening of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a8nzFZhGW8) (a season of Super Sentai which was never adapted into a season of Power Rangers), which also makes a great Theme Music Powerup (I was introduced to both series through the crossover episode :smalltongue:).

GAIKING THE GREAT! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg-mZTnqhcY) (that song oozes triumph)

I'd just like to say that this thing was the final nail in the coffin to all my self-esteem problems.

I just have to mention my favorite song of all times: Moskau (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQAKRw6mToA) (also, in Karaoke! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA5G_ZJfvBc)). No other song is even close in my opinion.

"The Great Sea" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6f1YDwcH84) from Wind Waker really makes me feel like I'm surrounded by rolling waves. Then there's "Curse of Night" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFNpESjWL3k) which mixes it with Ganondorf's theme.

All the Mongolian in the original post brought Blue Mark (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdkqVK0AzEk&feature=PlayList&p=E3BA15BFC52407F0&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=8) screaming to mind for me.

There's that song from Requiem For a Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2Ma4BvMUwU), of course.

For rage and moral indignation, nothing beats Clenching the Fists of Dissent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NitYVpCLPWg). And for sorrow developing into moral indignation, nothing beats A Farewell To Arms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu9w04PFQ98).

There are a lot of great metal songs about general epicness, but Valley of the Damned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUWCrCXiVpA&feature=PlayList&p=1FEB6F12F8EC1103&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=92) stands out for me.

Last of the Wilds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrIz0KCq1YA) is all kinds of beautiful. It's the only song that I've ever thought had the best possible name to summarize its contents.

Shine Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5H6K_2Nw-QU) is a great uplifting song.

Reject Yourself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrhIbX-uDjQ), Unbroken (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lObjLbM3p_U&feature=related), and Take This Oath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhFQE2aRBaU) are excellent go-forth-and-be-moral songs. And Rose of Sharyn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV511ZxioNg) is my favorite upbeat love song by a large margin.

My favourite song ever, "Shine on you crazy diamond" by Pink Floyd. I actually prefer the version in Echoes, but I can't find a link, since it's very long (17 min for the Echoes version). It always mnages to emotion me, expecially the instrumental part at the beginning.

Protest songs uplift me, expecially our old partisan songs (from the Italian Resistance)

A la Volonte du Peuple (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu1eyEvcEG0) - Les Miserables - The original french musical. A song of freedom, sacrifice, and the People's will.

L'Attaque de Notre-Dame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRVeyvg2808&feature=related) - Notre-Dame-de-Paris. This song is a Final Showdown of Final Destiny, it has many great moment, and.. an undertone about immigration, people belonging to their new land.

And that they will keep coming. No matter what you do. Close your borders if you want, it doesn't matter. They. will. come.
The best part is when they hum after Clopin's death

Tu Va me Detruire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5St9zF849o) - (also Notre-Dame-de-Paris)

Hellfire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRO-M4XyAbM) - The Hunback of Notre-Dame

These two songs are about the same thing, the same character. One is more irredeemable than the first. But.. still. Both of them as feeling the lust for Esmeralda destroying everything they ever held dear. They are feeling the flame of Hell, or what they see as Hell, coming to them, and they are not sure they want to turn away.

It's an ode about Men's lust, and how all your rigor, all your logic, all your discipline, can be cast away by your insane emotions. I know it may sound silly, but maybe this is what Vulcans feel everyday...

And, finally:

The World's Greatest Criminal Mind - French Version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv28m66Mi2M) - The Great Mouse Detective

Now this one is special. I am sorry, but it put the english version to shame. Find the translation option, and tell yourself that the automatic translator isn't perfect, so sometimes it comes across as less brutal than in french.

Ratigan is simply more violent, dark, and pure monster in the French version. He is also more class. In English, he brags about how he is a great thief. In French, he brags about how he is an horrible killer.

Oh, and he doesn't care you call him a Rat in French. But don't you dare call him a Scélérat (wretched). For him, it's not about a hyppocrit lie. It's about social standing, and criminal class... :smalleek:

He'd have made Nostalgia Critic's top 3 villain in French.

Moving music? I live for this stuff. If a song doesn't manage to work on my emotions in some way, it means it failed its purpose.
There's a lot of stuff I can link here, so let's give it in small batches. The spoilerific theme of the first one:
The great deaths of great characters!
Blue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03qBqP2I4p8) from Cowboy Bebop - incredibly sad and cathartic.

Pierce the heavens with your XXX! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GopzpFJm4LQ) from TTGL - this, on the other hand, is extremely uplifting.

More songs later.

Keith Jarret's The Koln Concert. It's been my official writing music for almost a decade now and still there are passages so heart-wrenchingly beautiful that I'm shivering just thinking about them.

This is number one on my Desert Island list.

Also, I can't do any linking as I'm at work. But it's on youtube in 10 minute fragments. And remember kids, when you listen, he's making it up as he goes along.

Celes' Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2Q_4X5X8eQ&feature=related) from Final Fantasy VI. It was the first game that ever hit me emotionally and it still does. This song in particular because it always reminds me of right after the end of the world when Cid dies and Celes falls into a horrible depresion and tries to kill herself. I know you can save him, but its just a much more powerful theme if you let him die. Even more so if you don't know how to save him and try to.

Word. I was kinda young when I first played Final Fantasy 6, so that song really had a strong impact on me. I didn't know stuff like that could happen in video games :smallfrown:

The song was awesome enough in the opera scene, in an "aww, look at them being all romantic" kind of way.
Then the developers use the same tune in the cliff scene. I really didn't know what I had done wrong, but the result was pretty obvious. Strong stuff for my younger self :smalleek:

As for happier songs, The Protomen always make me feel very energetic. The tunes are catchy and the story is, of course, hella awesome.
Might think of more songs later.

Disturbed land of confusion, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6KXgjLqSTg) managed to blow my mind when i was 10 years old and have loved it ever since

But the single deepest musician I have ever heard is Mr. Johnny Cash (God rest his soul) who remains the only musician to move me to tears

Used to move me to tears when I was going through the phase of my life of moving to another city to live on my own for the first time to study. Most of you won't probably understand the lyrics, but it is about lost innocence, etc. The singer tells about the time he spend in the country as a kid, about this one time he and a man from the place he was staying in were going to drown some kittens, apparently because autumn was coming and they didn't have homes, but they didn't drown them that time. Then, next summer he comes back and realizes that he'd much rather spend his summers in the city. The repeat tells how "we couldn't bear to killers, we remained innocent, but now things are all different". Yeah, I haven't excatly lost my innocence, it's more about the growing-up aspect of the thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgcoBKWTW14 Into the West - Annie Lennox
Well, I can certainly understand my mother listening to this and crying after her father (my grandfather) had died. It's just so sad and hopeful at the same time. And perhaps because of that connection, I would like it to be played at my funeral (which I hope is still a long time away), if I get anything to say in it.

If I think of something a bit more upbeat, I will post it. But sadness is easy to remember.
