I take it from 53 views and no replies, there are no errors in my stat block? :smalltongue:

...anyway, feel free to post your own stat blocks people. It's always nice to have a fresh pair of eyes check it over for mistakes.

20 HD and only a CR 6?? Yeah it's just a mass of hitpoints, nothing especially deadly in terms of offense. But isn't that AC a little high for a CR 6?

If I'm reading the zombie template right, 18-20HD = CR 6. The creature keeps it's natural AC (+14 for a Ghaele), and adds +2 (for medium creatures).

Well, this is in the wrong area...that might be why you aren't getting any replies.

I'd comment, but I'm not a very good proofreader for this sort of thing.

Wrong area? How so...it certainly isn't homebrew. I can't see how it's any different than posting up a character build for critique?

well, it's pretty much strictly better than a Grey Render Zombie (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/zombie.htm), I think given that massive NA spike, it'd probably be closer to 7.

Using Vorpal Tribble's monster-CR-formula-thing gave me an 8ish-number. /shrug

It really depends on party composition and the circumstances they encounter it. That has really high attack and AC for a 6th level party. With the DR, it would be a bitch to take down, and its damage output is significant.

It's mindless, which means that it can be juked, and without any ranks in balance, a grease shuts it down handily.

Like most things in D&D, it's typically a little on the dangerous side for melee, and a cakewalk if there's a well prepared caster in the party.

Command Undead (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/commandUndead.htm). Encounter over.

*stats based on elite array (+1 CR)

That's the thing with generic templates, you are sure to find some anomaly which ends up being significantly stronger than its cr would otherwise indicate. Consider that the cr of a paragon half-dragon human commoner zombie is the same as a normal human commoner zombie. :smallamused:

As for your boneclaw, its str seems a little too high, plus elite array is wasted when you can have it free upon taking a class lv (which is why I did not suggest it in my earlier response).

Assuming you put 15 in str, that gives you 25str, plus how many of the 3 stats points you wish to assign there.

A bit dubious about elusive attack, though I suppose it is a good hedge against power attack (given your abysmally low AC).

Hmm...an advanced boneclaw seems a tad weaker than I had originally envisioned. :smallmad:

Thanks for the feedback Runestar.

Hmm, have to re-evaluate STR, I might have miscalculated. As a 22HD creature, it gets a total of +5 ability bonuses? Or do I only count the extra HD beyond 10 - is it assumed that the base creature already has these built in?

I'd rather not go with class levels in this particular case, for campaign reasons...although you make a good point.

Runestar

You count only those past 10 HD (any before is assumed to already be factored into its existing stat modifiers), so you get 3 more points (for 12, 16 and 20th lv).

But to be fair, no one is really going to know the difference.

On the first block, 20 HD and only one feat? :smallconfused:

On the first block, 20 HD and only one feat? :smallconfused:

That's because it is unintelligent and doesn't get feats (or skills) from HD. It gets Toughness because that is a bonus feat for Zombies.

Is there some kind of spreadsheet that adds up the numbers on the stat block for you? Maybe that could check these kinds of things. As for figuring out CR, average monster stats would be handy too:

hp init AC touch ff_ac bab fort ref will
CR 6
Avg 69.12 3.27 18.88 11.00 17.27 7.60 8.08 6.85 6.08
Max 133 13 29 29 24 12 14 12 12

CR 7
Avg 86.98 2.91 18.07 10.38 16.44 8.38 8.67 6.98 6.56
Max 152 13 25 17 24 13 15 19 12

AB isn't listed, but 10+CR or so is a good rule of thumb. Your zombie has a few immunities but not much in the way of special abilities or feats, and he's limited to 1 action, so maybe he could be slightly tougher than the norm. Your zombie seems roughly par except his HP and AC make him a beast defensively. Also checked his damage vs. a CR 7 hill giant and it about matches and has a higher AB. Those are probably still okay since he's so slow, but this is going to be a long fight. I'm going to guess CR 6 is correct. I'd agree with CR 8 if it weren't for zombie slowness and mindlessness.
