"Somebody in this camp ain't what he appears to be. Right now that may be one or two of us. By spring, it could be all of us."

---

Welcome to a variation on the classic werewolf game, inspired and based off John Carpenter's 1982 film 'The Thing', itself a remake of the 1951 classic 'The Thing From Another World'. This will be a werewolf game with two sides - the Researchers and the Thing. Roleplaying would be nice but is not mandatory, though you still have to choose an in-character name, just to avoid using profile names. Days will last approximately 48 hours and Nights will last approximately 24 hours. As usual, voting and lynching happens during the day and attacks happen at night.

ROLES
THE RESEARCHERS
The Researchers: Your job is to stay alive and defeat the Thing. Every day you must discuss among yourselves and choose a Researcher to lynch, by tying them to chair, dousing them in gasoline, and setting them alight. If a 50% majority is reached, the day is ended early and the lynching takes place. If no 25% majority is reached by the end of the day, the mob cannot gather enough numbers and no one is lynched.

The Doctor: You have the ability to protect a single player other than yourself. By watching over someone, the Thing will be forced to avoid them. Every Night phase, you may PM me with the name of one character you wish to protect from death. You do not want to make your position known however, or else the Thing will certainly attempt to take you down right away. During the day, you play things out as a normal Researcher.

The Rogue: You have stolen the facility's only flamethrower and have the ability to torch someone with it each night. You will and must kill the Thing by any means. It is up to your own judgement as to who the Thing is, but if you make your actions known, your fellow Researchers will certainly kill you for taking their lives without trial. During the day, you play things out as a normal Researcher.

THE THING
The Thing: You are an vicious alien creature with the ability to assimilate and imitate other organisms perfectly. Every night you have the ability to pick one Researcher to kill. The twist is that you have a chance to assimilate the person, but with each night that passes your chances grow smaller and smaller. When there are multiple 'Things', you still only pick a single player, but you may PM each other to talk between yourselves as to who you pick. The original Thing will then PM the decision to me. If you attack a player who is under the watchful eye of the doctor, your turn is wasted and no one dies from your hand..claw, or tentacle. During the day, you play things out as a seemingly normal Researcher, though you try to force the lynches asway.

1st Night: 100% chance to assimilate, 0% chance the researcher dies
2nd Night: 50% chance to assimilate, 50% chance the researcher dies
3rd Night: 25% chance to assimilate, 75% chance the researcher dies
4th Night: 12.5% chance to assimilate, 87.5% chance the researcher dies
5th Night & all Nights Following: 10% chance to assimilate, 90% chance the researcher dies.

RULES
Votes and unvotes must be bolded and in red, or they will not count.

Metagaming is frowned upon and PMing other players is not allowed, unless you are part of the collective consciousness of the Thing. If you urgently want to pass on a message to another player, you may PM it to me with the name of whoever it is directed to, and it may or may not reach them.

You may claim that your role is this or that, but this will usually result in a quick death, whether by lynching, flamethrower, or slimy clawed tentacle.

Players who don't participate for two days consecutively will be autolynched.

No editing, no quoting my posts. Three strikes and you're out.

When you die, you may choose to write a short epitaph that will be visible after your death. This is completely optional.

The game will start on a Night phase. This is to serve as a confirmation and roleplaying round, while the Thing picks its first 100% assimilation.

In-character discussions and roleplaying are recommended, but not mandatory. To play, you must however create a character by filling out the following information.

Name: Only a last name is necessary, like Childs, MacReady, or Palmer.
Occupation: This must make sense in the context of an Antarctic Research station. The most common examples would be biologists, geologists, oceanographers, physicists, astronomers, glaciologists, and meteorologists, as well as a slew of maintenance staff, such as engineers, doctors, and culinary staff.

I acknowledge that Face of Evil has ran a successful The Thing-based werewolf game a while back, and don't mean to try to replace or uproot it. We simply share the same inspiration from the movie, which is rife with werewolf-esque tension and paranoia. If you haven't seen it before, you'd be doing yourself a favor to go and view it as soon as possible.

Elder Tsofu
2010-02-05, 04:07 PM
Name: Pär Örjansson
Occupation: Chef

A 45 year old Swedish chef, specialising in canned meals - but is known to serve fermented Baltic herring when he miss home.
Coming from Norrland he's used to the 6 months of continuous sun and the 6 months with continuous night. He tries hard to find an assistant, but they never stay long.

Name: Lars McPherson
Occupation: Current unhappy assistant to Pär Örjansson, Lars is a budding chef trying to steal the secrets of Pär's miraculous canned food meals. Lars is a half Scottish/Swedish mix with the tendency for playing sad bagpipe songs after a failed meal.

lostlittlebear
2010-02-05, 05:30 PM
Name: Lee Chang (Last name underlined)
Occupation: Security Guard/Mercenary
Age: 43
Background: A former member of the PLA, Chang was denounced during the Cultural Revolution for being a vocal supporter of a discredited general. Fleeing the persecution he faced in his native land, Chang stowed away on a ship bound for America. He put his skills to good use in the West, eventually finding employment as a member of a shady private military corporation with ties to the CIA. Since then, he's seen service in El Salvador and Cambodia - fighting the wars that the American state never really wanted to acknowledge.

The years have made him grow sick of violence and death, and he's been looking forward to his impending retirement. His latest assignment to guard an Antarctic Base seems like his dream job - after all, what potential thieves could there be in an arctic wasteland? Surely this assignment is just something dreamed up by a government official with too much paranoia and too little common sense.

Excellent, 5 players down, 15 to go. I hope I haven't scared anyone away with the in-character expectation. The forums where I used to play werewolf were always in-character, so it's the standard I'm used to. If we can't get enough players because of that though, I'd be willing to change.

Excellent, 3 more players. I'm making roleplaying optional so we can fill this up quicker, since it seems that roleplaying is non-standard in werewolf games on this forum, which is fine. You will still however have to pick a character name and job, such as Walker the Geologist, just to avoid using profile names.

Bookworm, you still need one of those. :smallwink: The Thing has always reminded of the shoggoths in the mountains of madness too though, hehe.

And if I may suggest, gardenphilosoph, that you just make Fleeing Coward a computer. They have those there, I'm sure. :smalltongue:

Also, two questions.

1. No editing? At all? What happens if someone was trying to vote, and they accidentally forget to add the red color to the vote?

I happen to edit a lot. I forget things as I type them and need to go back and edit into the post.

2. The first night, the Thing can assimilate their target 100%. Does that include the Doctor protected one?

If the doctor successfully protects his patient, does that count against the Thing's night? Or does he have a 100% chance to assimilate the next night?

Would like to get at least 18 players, but I'll give recruitment two more days. If we're still short by then, we'll just start.

How fast do recruitment threads usually fill up? Have I done something wrong?

Lex-Kat
2010-02-10, 05:56 PM
You're new. So it won't normally fill up fast.

Also, your rules may feel a bit restrictive to some here. Like the RPing requirement and maybe even the Editing one (which I chafed at, obviously). Some of us RP, others don't.

But the game over-all looks fun. And I can't wait to play.

Also, once you get going, and people start talking about how good you are, your next game will likely fill up faster.

My first game, Assassins, I only got 22 players. The 2nd got 31. And the 3rd got 38.

It's strange, the forums where I started out playing WW made RPing and no-editing a requirement, so it's just what I'm accustomed to. The roleplaying requirement has been lifted and makes sense, but isn't the no-editing rule necessary to ensure fair play? There's always trust, I suppose, hehe.

Anyways, thanks for the support. :)

The no editing and forced roleplay work much better in conjunction I think. It's not too hard to just add some coloured text and a view actions to pretty up your argument anyway.

Makes it closer to the proper feeling of paranoia, I think. You can't edit what you say out loud, can you?

Makes it closer to the proper feeling of paranoia, I think. You can't edit what you say out loud, can you? That's basically what I was going for. It also seems strange to me how WW games have a strong theme or setting, and you you vote to lynch fanboy11901 or some immersion-breaking name like that.

Lex-Kat
2010-02-10, 06:27 PM
I can understand the point.

But most here are not used to that.

As to not editing what you say out-loud, if I was saying what I was typing, out loud, there'd be no grammatical errors, I wouldn't worry that my character wasn't speaking in the correct color, or that I forgot to color the point red, or that I forgot to add something that I really wanted to say.

Of course, that last one can just be posted in a double-post.

Or, I could just select-all, copy, and then delete the post.

And then, reply, paste, and add the new information I forgot in the previous post.

If the doctor successfully protects his patient, does that count against the Thing's night? Or does he have a 100% chance to assimilate the next night?1. Alright, fine, you can edit, it should just be avoided. I tend to do that alot too.

2. Hmm. Didn't think of this, even though the odds are pretty low. On one hand I can have only the Thing act on the first night, since the game starts on a night, and on the other hand, I can just play it out regularly. Though this would mean that the rogue gets to kill someone the first 'night' too, and that doesn't make sense.

The first 'night' is meant to serve more as a confirmation plus the Thing picking his ally night, so the other roles won't get to start until the second 'night', technically. Hope that makes sense.

---

Okay all, we have 19 players, which is fine with me. I'll get a game thread up by the end of today. It will technically be a 'night', though only the Thing will get a chance to go, and that's just to assimilate a person so it won't be a 1-night lynch. I'll send out role PMs by today to.

Megathanks to lex-kat, who was extremely helpful.

gardenphilosoph

Role PMs are out, and I've posted the thread - it's just awaiting approval. Soon as it's up, feel free to post.

Remember, first night, no roles can do their thing save for the Thing, which picks out an ally to assimilate. The first night serves as a confirmation round, and to get a grasp of everyone's personality.

If you wish you can also start confirming here. I just need a confirmation to know if you're still in the game or not.

And I'm just confirming - if we lynch the Thing on Day 1 we all win, right? Game over?

This happened in my Monster Mash game, where 1 of the 3 factions was lynched on the first day before they could recruit on the night phase.

I had to reward the villagers by killing the faction, which bogged down the game - but thems the breaks you know.
