So I saw a thread about a grapple mage using an octopus familiar. How exactly does that work on land, or does that have to be a aquatic campaign?

Keep it in a jar of water. Seriously, an Octopus can squeeze into very small containers thanks to it's anatomy.

Air breathing spell helps. Then they breath air and are basically amphibians for duration (2 hrs/level, 3rd level Cleric/Sorceror/Wiz/Druid).

Fins to feet spell give the familar human legs.

It's just as well - you want your familiar to be tucked safely out of combat anyways. :smallwink:

Will it be able to breath?

Change the water daily and it can breathe just fine.

...It's aquatic by nature, The worst you'll need to do is change the water every day (depends on jar size). Failing that, Portable Hole or Ioun Stone.

Buy a golden, bejeweled tank and hire a team of naked men/women (to taste) to carry around your beloved octopus.

Best case scenario: at room temperature, a small octupus (250 g) uses 17.5 ml/hr of oxygen. 7 ppm is a bit high oxygen content for water, we'll use that (again best-case scenario).
So if you put the octopus in a 4L tank (thus 10 lbs total if your tank is fairly light) you will not need to change your water once per day. You will need to change your water 625 times per hour.

If you want your familiar to die every time someone dispels magic, by all means carry it out of the ocean.

It takes the same amount of time for a mouse to suffocate in a bag of holding type IV as a human in a type I, leave your realities out of this.

OOTS solution: Your octopus pops in and out of existence at your convenience.

4th edition solution: Your octopus is a splinter personality magically given corporeal form instead of an actual creature. Overlaps with above, as popping in and out of existence is an explicit ability of 4th edition familiars.

Mundane solution:

Keep it in a jar of water.

Magical solution: Air breathing spell or ioun stone.

Win solution:

Buy a golden, bejeweled tank and hire a team of naked men/women (to taste) to carry around your beloved octopus.

Easy solution: get your dm to ignore the aquatic subtype and declare that one species of octopus is amphibious.

Hmm... How can we build Domingo (http://www.fantasyanime.com/shiningforce/sflist.htm#domingo)? Now THAT would be handy.

You might have trouble convincing them it's not that sort of job.

That's what Diplomacy is for.
They won't care if it's "that" sort of job.

Just refer your DM to the tree-climbing octopus featured on this website (http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/). It's a known hoax, but maybe he won't know that.

+1 to this.

But yeah, incorporeal octopus are scary as hell as they float around as if they were still in water (squid and jellyfish have similar reactions), you'd be shocked at how effective this is at unnerving people.
