Sorry if there is a similar thread. I couldn't find one, but this doesn't mean there isn't. If there is - feel free to delete it. (they will probably do it anyway)

If (only hypothetically) someone was about to make a movie about OOTS and you were the producers who would you cast as the characters?

:xykon: Armin Shimerman (voice of (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If0oR9xolzY) Dr. Nefarious (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sflQAX9fgI)) I know he's supposed sound kinda like James Earl Jones according to SoD, but ever since Nefarious I've imagined pretty much all supernatural over-the-top villains with that voice (Plus, it kinda reminds me of Skeletor)

I agree with your choices for Elan and Belkar, but think Morgan Freeman should play Eugene Greenhilt while Samuel L. Jackson plays Roy.

I also imagine Christina Hendricks (Saffron from Firefly) would make a wonderful Haley.

V. would be the most difficult to cast (a live-action film would probably either have to make a big call on willing suspension of disbelief or choose a male or female V.) A female V would be done really well by Michelle Pfeiffer (see the film Stardust for why). A male V would be British in my head. Alan Rickman would do it beautifully, I think (especially the whole IFCC bit).

Durkon...hmm...no idea.

Nale: Use SFX to get him also played by Niel Patrick Harris.

Celia: Either Clare Danes or Reece Witherspoon.

Xykon: Voice by Mark Hamill (for his work as The Joker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4tWmL0OlvQ), not Star Wars).

Can anyone else picture John Malkovich being an awesome Thog?
That said, he'd be a better Redcloak.

Monster in the Dark: I have him voiced by either Ewan McGregor or Frank Oz.

Julio Scoundrél: Nathan Fillion, of course.

I've thought about this far too much...

Gift Jeraff
2010-02-09, 08:41 PM
I thought Julio Scoundrel was clearly Johnny Depp. :smalltongue:

Also, for Qarr, I'm split: The heroes were intimidated by his speech balloons (I imagine the voice for the Precursor Oracles in the first two Jak and Daxter games), but on the other hand, I imagine a squeaky voice for imps.
Also, I imagine Trey Parker's Satan voice for the giant devil Qarr summons. And for the Three Fiends, I imagine the same voice for all 3 but just different effects applied to each.

Morgan Freeman is over 70. Samuel L Jackson is over 60. At the risk of sounding ageist, the Roy in my head is considerably closer to Chiwetel Ejiofor (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0252230/) (The Operative from Serenity).

I still like the idea of Belkar voiced by Kelsey Grammar, but obviously Kelsey would also fail the age test if it's not animated.

animation vs live action would make a big difference. Of course the issue with a lot of these is A: they cast everyone who appears in the comic (which they'd likely never hit at least without a sequel or two) and put together a cast that would be way too expensive.

I'd prefer animated myself but there are better people than I to choose voice actors. I've grown too rusty to know all the good ones out there anymore.

Milla Jovovic as Haley Starshine
Halle Berry as Sabine
Danny DeVito as Belkar Bitterleaf

If it was animated, Vaarsuvius would have two voices (a clearly male one and a clearly female one) speaking at once, like when Baron Ashura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Ashura) spoke frontally to the camera.

I can't even begin to imagine how you see a "near-perfect" parallel between the two. About the only actual parallel I can see is that both have a superior that is completely evil and would be more than willing to kill them, despite a long time of service, if there was something to gain in it (well technically snape's real "superior" was Dumbledore, not Voldemort).

*Unclear if he is on the 'good' or 'evil' side
*The author gives the impression he is on the 'evil' side
*He is the right-hand man to the biggest threat the world has ever seen
*His motivations are based heavily on dealings with someone he loved that happened well before the story starts

For Vaarsuvius, Tilda Swinton did great work as the androgynous Gabriel in Constantine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-sFPLGwwYg). She and Peter Stormare were the only good parts of that film.

I like how everyone only knows one black actress and one Asian actress, which are the ones always trotted out.

* Redcloak is difinitly evil. He might have a good motive for what's he doing, but he's clearly evil and many of his means are evil.
* Redcloak is on the evil side. Snape is not. Where's the common ground?
* A) We do not know that. We can assume it, but we don't know that. But even if that's true: B) So is Darth Vader. Or Saruman. Or any second-in-command of the Big Bad.

It wasn't a terrible movie, if you went in not caring if it was anything at all like Hellblazer (it wasn't). It wasn't great, but it was enjoyable as an action movie that had nothing to do with the comic books except for the main character's name and nicotine addiction.

Tilda is an excellent villain. White Witch of Narnia, come on!

Even in loose robes though, she might not be androgynous enough for V. Perhaps a really good drag queen?

Hmm I also think this movie would be way better being animated. It gives a completely whole world of possibilities.

So, taking this into account, we should choose the voices, but anyway, here's my cast:

Roy: (please anyone except Will Smith...:smallsigh:)
Belkar: Jack Black
Haley: That redhead chick from Lost, don't remember her name
V: don't know... some androginous guy ... David Bowie? lol
Elan: Ben McKenzie
Durkon: Danny Devito (compensating for not being Gimli)
Xykon: voice of James Earl Jones with a reverb modulator and a crackling effect, of course
Redcloak: Simon Pegg

EXTRAS:
Nale: also Ben McKenzie lol
Thog: Lou Ferrigno
Sabine: Lauren London
Lord Shojo: Sean Connery (I always thought of this)
O-chul: Vin Diesel
Julio Scoundrel: Sergi López (bad guy from Pan's Labyrinth, good actor)

I think the most tricky one to find would be V... it would probably have to be an actress, since I've never really seen an androgynous-looking guy who wasn't a j-rock singer XD
I'd say Kate Beckinsale, she looked slightly androgynous already in the "underworld" movies, and make-up can improve that...

But her voice is a dead give away. I mean, you can work some electronic effects on it to try to make that less apparent, I suppose. Not sure how else you'd get an equally androgynous voice. While we're on the subject of V, has anyone though of any possibles for the brief appearance V's mate, Inkyrius?

That was totally unintentional.
Let's say i'm not fond of football.

OK, no big deal. It's just that the usual format is like that, with the positions in columns and then the players next to them.

Charlie Sheen for... somebody.

I see him in a role of a goofy goody-goody two shoes paladin. If a character like this is introduced in the future, Charlie Sheen has to play him.

Dan Castellaneta as the Monster in Darkness.
That's the best idea I've heard so far.

And come on, we're talking about voice acting and noone has mentioned Jeremy Irons (Scar from Lion King) so far? He would make a damn good Kubota or Qarr. He'd be too sophisticated for Xykon though...

I really like Jackie Chan, but he looks a bit too nice to look as badass as O-Chul.
We need an asian-looking Samuel Jackson. Someone who embodies badassry. That you know he has 20 lvl in Badass just by looking at him.
My favourite choice would be a young (and alive) Toshiro Mifune. A man who is 1 m 75 tall and fill a room like if he was a Ronon Dex with steroid.

Though I'm a movie watching fanatic I really am bad at knowing actors until they are pointed out to me.

Leonard Roberts as Roy though? I'm gonna have to give a hell no to that one. I've always seen Roy as having like gentle eyes. He's a bad ass but a kind hearted one. An almost big brotherly fellow. Leonard Roberts has always come off as a complete di... err, trouser titan.

Maybe not even have him black but more like a very dark skinned Egyptian type? I know I saw an actor like that once. In my mind's eye he's more pharaoh-like in appearance than african.

Then there is Haley... Christina Hendricks if she was young enough to pass for an early 20 year old. I would so watch her in an action movie at any age however...

As much as I love Chiwetel Ejiofor, he's got too much gravitas for Roy. Not that Roy can't be sober, but he almost lost his ticket to the afterlife for his cheek (okay, not really, but still). Ejiofor would be much better as Horace Greenhilt.

As far as Roy goes, if we want to keep it Whedon-y, Richard Brooks (Jubal Early) would be fantastic. J. August Richards (Charles Gunn) would also work very well. Actually, he'd probably work better as a leader and fighter, but I still prefer the pure awesome of Brooks.

Jet Li could work for sure. I just feel, totally subjectively, that he has not enough gravity for O-Chul.

This is exactly Leonard Roberts in the first season of Heroes IMHO.

Maybe not even have him black but more like a very dark skinned Egyptian type? I know I saw an actor like that once. In my mind's eye he's more pharaoh-like in appearance than african.

You may be thinking to Oded Fehr (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004912/), seen notably in The Mummy. He is a talented and charismatic actor indeed.

Then there is Haley... Christina Hendricks if she was young enough to pass for an early 20 year old. I would so watch her in an action movie at any age however...
I really like Christina Hendricks, she is charming. I think myself that she hasn't the typical physic of the sneaky rogue. She's not as young and as thin as when she played in Firefly.

ThePhantasm
2010-03-28, 08:51 PM
OOTS would not work at all as live action, so here are some voice ideas:

Note: Some actors in dual roles.

:roy: Samuel L. Jackson (Unbreakable)
Jackson can be both funny and a badass. Perfect for Roy.

:nale: Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda)
I can see Jack Black being an over-the-top maniacal villain as Nale, while at the same time being naive as Elan.

:redcloak: Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings)
Dourif could give Redcloak the sofistication and subdued anger that he needs, while at the same time playing Vaarsuvious, whom he fits well with his androgynous voice.

:belkar: Mark Hamill (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm)
Hamill is probably the best voice actor on this list, able to pull off a variety of voices from the Joker to Solomon Grundy. This is why he would be a perfect choice for the killer jokester Belkar while at the same time playing a naive but powerful MITD.

:durkon: Mike Myers (Shrek)
Mike Myers, with his scottish accent, would be a great Belkar, and I have no doubt he'd pull off a funny Thog as well with a different, deeper voice.

:xykon: Kevin Conroy (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm)
Conroy is sofisticated, wryly humored, and menacing enough to be Xykon easily.

:elan: Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda)
See above about Nale.

:vaarsuvius: Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings)
See above about Redcloak.

:haley: Dana Delany (Superman: The Animated Series)
Dana Delany can be spunky, feisty, and also naive and vulnerable. A perfect Haley in my opinion.

:thog: Mike Myers (Shrek)
See above about Durkon.

:miko: Yuunjin Kim (LOST)
This is probably the casting I'm least confident in. Kim can pull off an emotionless voice pretty well though, which would fit Miko's coldness, and can also yell pretty loud, which would fit Miko's temper tantrums.

:sabine: Bonnie Hunt (Cars)
Someone with past voice experience, who could pull off a deceptively innocent voice that would be great for Sabine.

:mitd: Mark Hamill (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm)
See above about Belkar.

:roach: Gilbert Gottfried

You know something? He usually plays "pest villains" like Quark or Principal Snyder. Well, Ok, maybe not "usually..." but those have apparently been his career highlights. But even just from those two roles, let's see what he's projected.
Intelligence? Check.
Dogmatic stubborn-ness? Check.
Enough charisma that, when the script makes him out to be sympathetic, it plays? Check.
Enough "irk" factor that, even while doing the above, he still gives the impresion that, actually good guy or not, he is not charismatic to those around him? Again, check.
Stature that can pass for eithr Small or Medium, depending on the viewer's insistance? Boo yah!

Armin Shimmerman might be a hell of a Redcloak. He's used to working in heavy prosthetic makeup, that's for sure, in the impossible event of a non-animated version.

Hey, I know there's about 80 million of these threads... has William Shatner come up yet as Captain Scoundrel?

ETA: I just checked out that Dr. Nefarious link. I get where the endorsement for Xykon comes from.... but I can't hear that particular over-the-top voice handling any of Xykon's more serious dialogue. If we're using the "actor doesn't have to sound like reverb" rule, which seems like pretty much a given, since not only is Xykon human in the prequal scenes, but it takes a budget to make him look like a skeleton anyway... then I'm still solidly in the Jack Nicholson camp. Alter it to be deeper or don't. Either way, he's got the attitude and inflections and perfect blend of apathy, annoyance, and confidence that makes for a perfect Xykon.

Morgan Wick
2010-03-30, 09:30 PM
Among other problems with a live-action film, Xykon would probably be pure nightmare fuel, and it would be a lot harder for Redcloak to be a sympathetic character. Not that I wouldn't like to see someone turn in a good performance as Miko in 406...

You have both a keen eye for detail and a good memory. I've read the comic start to finish about five times and never noticed that. Color me impressed.

I now doubly support Davis for playing Belkar, just because it would tick him off.
I think that comic is a sign Rich associated Belkar with Davis.

:durkon: Mike Myers (Shrek)
Mike Myers, with his scottish accent, would be a great Belkar, and I have no doubt he'd pull off a funny Thog as well with a different, deeper voice.
I actually hear Durkon in my head with a really deep voice, while Thog sounds like Fozzie from the Muppets, so I have them backwards from you.

This. That would be awesome. I'd love to see Morgan Freeman as Eugene.

Morgan Freeman is way too associated with sensitive mentorly characters for the more amoral and impatient Eugene, I'm afraid. I could see Eugene with an even raspier, older voice than Morgan, one that allows him to come across as a bitter, broken man.

Oh, and it's been suggested in other threads but not this one: Tara Strong's Raven voice for Vaarsuvius.

So Cameron Diaz? I dunno. As a voice actor, yeah, she would work. Too old to play her live-action.

:haley: Amanda Righetti. I'm totally on board with that one.

:elan: On the surface he'd actually be really easy to cast. Just need a young, handsome guy. But you have to remember that the same guy would also be doing Nale, so you'd need a little more talent. That means Orlando Bloom is out. I think Alan Tudyk could pull it off, but it might be a stretch for him to play a guy 20 years younger. Leonardo DiCaprio actually might be a possibility.

:vaarsuvius: Well, Tilda Swinton has been mentioned and I could see that working, but I actually like Johnny Depp. An extremely versatile actor who does androgynous very well.

I agree with your choices for Elan and Belkar, but think Morgan Freeman should play Eugene Greenhilt while Samuel L. Jackson plays Roy.

So who gets to play Eugene's dad?

I also imagine Christina Hendricks (Saffron from Firefly) would make a wonderful Haley.

At this rate someone's bound to nominate Karen Gillan but if you really wanted it being developed today who would you choose?

V. would be the most difficult to cast (a live-action film would probably either have to make a big call on willing suspension of disbelief or choose a male or female V.) A female V would be done really well by Michelle Pfeiffer (see the film Stardust for why). A male V would be British in my head. Alan Rickman would do it beautifully, I think (especially the whole IFCC bit).

What's wrong with Johnny Depp?

Nale: Use SFX to get him also played by Niel Patrick Harris.

What's wrong with just having him don a goatee as Nale and not as Elan?

Celia: Either Clare Danes or Reece Witherspoon.
Yes I can see Reece Witherspoon pulling that off

Xykon: Voice by Mark Hamill (for his work as The Joker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4tWmL0OlvQ), not Star Wars).

Hmm I'd have gone with either Alan Rickman or Gary Oldman but since its going to involve cgi or makeup could they get someones else to do the physical side ala Sylar in early Heroes?

Can anyone else picture John Malkovich being an awesome Thog?
That said, he'd be a better Redcloak.

I was picturing Vin Diesel after all Thog is intimidating!

Monster in the Dark: I have him voiced by either Ewan McGregor or Frank Oz. Jim Carrey, perhaps not...

I've thought about this far too much...

Heck no this is only starting!

Imagining live action is just a little too restrictive, so here are a few suggestions for animation. It's really just a matter of who I hear in my head when I read the comic:

Qarr's Giant Devil-Trey Parker's Satan voice
Durkon-Billy Connolly
Belkar-John DiMaggio for the loveable sociopath three-peat (already Bender and Rico from Penguins of Madagascar)
Kubota-Jeremy Irons
Elan-Nathan Fillion. He's good at acting like an overgrown twelve-year old.
Nale-Likewise, Nathan Fillion, but in more of a bad guy mode.
