Random Banter

Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

Anyway, aspects of life suck, and occasionally life will get its act together and suck tremendously, but if you're completely miserable or struck with bone-deep ennui you either live in a warzone or you're not trying hard enough.

Many people are irritating, seflish gits. Many people are stupid. Life does not often thrust exciting opportunities out of a vacuum. And despite this, many people are somewhat happy. Some of these people are very smart. Some of these people are very reclusive.

I can't give you specific advice. I don't know jack **** about you, beyond what you share in conversation. But I have the utmost optimism that life has not singled you out and conspired to remove every possibility of fulfillment from your existence.

No, seriously. The longer you stare at it, the more tired you will become. Especially if the site you're on has a lot of white space that is literally white. It actually hurts the eyes and causes you to feel exhausted.

Close your eyes for awhile and let them relax. Also, eat something and drink something. Even if it's just water. Heck, you should probably drink water anyway. Water is good for you. You need water.



So in my own personal life, I'm getting fingerprinted next week. Hopefully this will allow me to teach as a substitute at my local school, which is the only job I can have until I can get my license...I think I would've had a much easier time getting it if I had just gone and got it when I was still in High School. Shows me for being lazy. :/ I don't even like cars anyway. I just need to drive one in order to get any sort of job. Unless I finally DO get a web design job, or start living in a metropolitan city.

The course has been great so far. The halls are perfectly functional and comfortable, though not very homely. As for Bangor itself...

Small enough to walk around easily, the night life is pleasantly quiet if you go out during the week (which I tend to do). Be thankful that you are missing out on Bitch Hill.

Pity it wasn't practical for you come here. You'd have fitted right in at the Bangor Wargaming and Roleplaying Society (or BWRPS - which is far easier and funnier to say).

The play was sold out. We went to G&Ds (an ice cream shop) where I bought some raspberry sorbet (omnomnomnom) and golden chai tea (scrumptious) and then went to the horrifically ridiculous Odeon cinema.
£6.10 for a grown-up's ticket. WITH student discount.
We saw Invictus which is basically a political thriller about rugby and Nelson Mandela.
It was amazing.
I, Curly, who has great distaste for politics, political thrillers and sports loved this film. Even if the slow-mo scrums were stupidly homoerotic - they slowed down the sound! So silly.

Worst part of it?

That's a good question. I think you have to question the usefulness of each one compared to the level of effort/sacrifice that had to be placed into building each one. For the pyramids, I think it's pretty widely-believed that the work was done largely by unpaid slaves who carried massive stones on their backs and the ultimate purpose of these massive golden monoliths was...to bury someone underneath it. Usually with all of the accumulated wealth they had from their life. While we also have to understand that the Egyptian belief was that you would be able to take all of these things with you, the fact is that most burials were nowhere near this extravagant, with basically only the wealthy elite being able to afford them. This, without a doubt, is mere egotism.

Skyscrapers are a bit more difficult to place. Yes, the architecture is essentially made to tower over all others, and the recent trend in building new ones has been to build them as tall as possible to trump past attempts, but the original purpose could, by some measures, be considered an architectural triumph. Without these types of buildings, there would be no New York City, no Chicago, no Tokyo, no Beijing, and even the smaller metropoli wouldn't be quite as efficient in holding people as they are right now. Yes, they can be oppressive sometimes, and there are cities that get along just fine without them, and they essentially gave way to the overcrowding of apartments that still plague many metropolitan cities today, but the essential purpose and usefulness of the structure can outweigh some of the misuse of these buildings in the past. Besides, without high-rising buildings, we would have an even worse housing market than we do right now. (Just imagine how expensive it would be to live in NY City if you cut the number of apartments down by half.)

As for the space station, it is true that some of the reason for building it is pure egotism, but the end result would be a nation-neutral station of science. It is indeed an expensive venture, but the possibilities, I believe, are well worth it.

I loved every minute of it!
It actually finished a little after five, but I've only just now gotten onto my toplap.
The theatre was the same one I saw Macbeth in, but the layout was different. The stage was winged by two seating areas, so while there was some incidences of the actors having their back to the audience, they made sure to split it fifty-fifty so that each wing of the audience got the same amount of time.
The songs? Well, it's G&S, I loved them all. The 'Pretty Little Flower and Her Big Oak Tree' song was . . . disturbing, which is accurate; Mad Margaret's song was lovely, as was the madrigal-type song at the first wedding.
Oh, and there was a full orchestra, so while the instruments occasionally drowned out the singers, it wasn't too often. Best songs: 'It really doesn't matter matter matter', and well, all the songs apart from the opening song sung by the Professional Bridesmaids.
Best voices: Robin, Dame Hannah, Rose(bud?), Robin's Dead Uncle Whose Name Has Slipped My MInd, But I Believe He Was the 21st Baronet, one of the Chorus girls, Mad MArgaret and **** (but only my brother is allowed to call me that because we went to school together) and one of the Male Chorus.
I know there were quite a few cuts for this performance, and one major change: rather than being portraits of dead Baronets they were statues. Made the necrophilia of Pretty Little Flower really weird.
Best scenes: the ending (such a trite excuse for a Happy Ever AFter - classic!), the Dragging Dame Hannah In A Sack to RObin Scene, Pretty Little Flower, anything with **** (but only my brother is allowed to call me that because we went to school together), anything with RObin and the scene were the ancestors come to 'life'.

Was it worth it? It was Gilbert & Sullivan. I love Victorian Melodrama and Victorian Gothic, I love the songs, the acting, the plot, the wit. All of it.
Do I wish I was in it? I believe I do. I'd have only been a Professional Bridesmaid at best, but it'd been nice to be in it. However, as this was the first G&S show I've seen, I'm glad I wasn't in it.

Funniest thing about the casting. Robin was played by the old G&S President (he finished his run last term) and he acts rather camp and I believe he might be a homosexual, and yet it's his foster brother who acted very camp and 'manly' as befitting a British tar.

The only problem I see with immortality is whether you age or not. Eternally young? Bad. Eternally just out of youth and approaching adulthood? Good. Eternally growing old? Very bad.

Depends on what sort of flavor of immortality as well. I mean, is it Tolkien's Elves' immortality where you're only there until the end of the world and then just cease to exist along with it, with no true afterlife? Maybe. Depends on whether there would or wouldn't be an afterlife otherwise and by what definition of the world ending. I mean, at bare minimum it protects against having to be around after the heat-death of the universe or being part of another big crunch and big bang.

Is it like a vampire from WoD where growing older inextricably divorces one's self from humanity until eventually one's life is more dream and cruelty than living? If so, probably not.

Is it like certain sorts of fey or interpretations of elves which live youthfully eternally in the prime of their physical lives but with stress and world-weariness can grow old and waste away with the zest for life wrung out of them, depending upon how they react to such stimuli? If so, sure.

Does the immortality confer an immunity to death from other sources? Does it confer an immunity to being crippled or maimed?

If the yes to the former and no to the latter, for instance, then one could very well end up forever alive as a horribly burned lump of flesh that has no mouth but must scream. And that'd just suck.

But if you wanna get a better idea, my family's doctor recommended me to try quitting dairy cold turkey for a week and a half and then going on a very high dairy diet. Like drinking over a gallon of milk over the course of a day. I'm not remembering what he said perfectly mind, but I still find this amusingly odd advice to receive.

Is possible that you aren't intolerant and just had too much dairy, as even those with tolerance for it can have different levels and be overwhelmed. Usually fairly unlikely to run into that much dairy though. I mean, processed dairy has a lot less of the lactose in it still due to the various enzymes nomming on it.

It's only a guaranteed nuisance for other people, though. For you, a world of dream and cruelty could be infinite splendor! I think I would probably prefer not to live forever. Even given an eternal, youthful lifespan, and even if I were given infinite mental stability, it would mean that everything I know and love would become old and dated. My friends and family would die long before me, and any companion I pick up will eventually grow old and die, and may even resent me for my eternal youth.

Even the world would seem alien to me, with ancient trees falling and new ones sprouting into giants. I would even see my own children grow old and crippled. These are things that no man was ever meant to see. It would be a sad, lonely existence, and I don't think I would want it.

Except the problem with this is that there is nothing in nothing. If you think there's nothing, then when you die you won't be able to observe that nothing. Honestly, the only reason why nothing is unpleasant is because of your fear of it. Yet if you died instantly before you could realize it would happen, this nothingness would be unable to cause you any distress. I'd say a lack of distress instead of intense pain for all eternity is a good choice.

Which is why any concept of something other than oblivion is superior, since oblivion itself is merely the embodiment of mankind's fear of death. Yes, even more so than eternal torment. That's the main reason why it seems silly that the idea of oblivion should be a relief from the fear of death and the unknown, because by invoking oblivion you're admitting that we don't know what happens after death so we'll pretend it doesn't.

This sort of what I'm getting at. If you can simply accept oblivion as what happens, than it is nothing to fear, and in the end, the whole reason for the dislike of death is this fear of oblivion. Once you rid yourself of this fear, oblivion is a superior choice to eternal pain.

Also, can you really say that after a long period of pain, you won't prefer oblivion? You may fear death now, but pain can easily change people's minds. Now pain that lasts forever, that can change your mind without any difficulty. Instead of spending your normal lifespan being afraid of oblivion, and then passing onto nothing at all, you will spend an eternity in a state of misery, wishing for oblivion.

Cartoons were better when I was a young adolescent (and worse when I was a kid with no taste). Night-time drama is much better now. Comedy is more a question of geography than time--my tastes in TV funniness were and are British. Game shows peaked before TV was broadcast in color. Factual documentaries have been constant in quality. Adult edutainment* is new and fun. Reality TV exists now, and should not. It's a hodgepodge, and thanks to streaming video and inexpensive DVD compilations, we can sample almost all of it.

Pancakes were made. Pancakes were consumed. Pancakes did not lessen the sting of being old, but were tasty even with unflavored syrup.

Yes. My cousins and ex-fiance's mom had audio books of the harry potter series. I think they came out either simultaneously or about a month to three months later than their corresponding books.

Might want to check with your local library. They should still be popular enough that if they have a selection there's copies of them within the network of libraries that it lends to if not the library itself.

There certainly are Harry Potter audiobooks. I'm not sure if it's different for the US, but the UK's versions are all voiced by Stephen Fry's chocolatey tones. He's the same person that narrated LittleBigPlanet.

My little brother has them all. But they're done by Jim Dale, not Stephen Fry. :smallconfused: Now, why would they have ONE English guy do the British version, and a DIFFERENT one do the American? Thus depriving American audiences of Stephen Fry?

Though Jim Dale DID win some kind of award for his versatility of voice.

Also, I don't find Stephen Fry particularly amusing.
