View Full Version : Why does Redcloak frown at Jirix's resurrection joke?

I've been trying to figure out that panel of #703 but I'm not really sure why he frowns. Is he jealous that Jirix got a laugh? Does he feel like the laugh is at his expense?

Redcloak tends to take things seriously. This may be a part of it.

Because Jirix isn't taking the whole thing seriously, that's all.

Okay, I laughed.

And yeah, Redcloak has always been the serious one.

The situation in which he rezzed Jirix could be reawakening the wounds of the situation that caused it.

Because redcloake framed it as a miracle directly from their dark lord. Jirix made it sound like any old spell. In redcloaks point of view that cheapens what it is that he actually does.

Well, Redcloak probably either
a) Doesn't have a sense of humor,
b) Objects to the holy magic of the Dark One being joked about,
c) Doesn't like the joke,
d) Thinks that Jirix is acting like an uppity underling,
e) Is annoyed by the reminder that such a low level character will be in charge of his beloved nation, or
f) All of the above to varying degrees.

+ he really wants to stay but has to leave with (under the command of) the Monster He Created.

I suspect that he just takes this very seriously and objects to Jirix cracking jokes during such a solemn occasion, but I don't think that he views it as such a big deal that he'll remember it once the whole announcement is over. He and Jirix just have different styles of public speaking--Redcloak is more eloquent and lofty while Jirix is casual.

not a frown. just not a smile... all other goblins and hobgoblin mouths are in that position when not making any expression.

He's got the furrowed eyebrows though to go with it.

I think I've occasionally seen that flat (or very slightly curved) brow with a smile- usually a somewhat evil-looking smile.

Without it, the expression does look somewhat frowny.

You can't blame it on the lack of redcloaks sense of humor. He has proven it in the past:

It is the combination of both, frown and mouth, which gives out the idea that Redcloak is, at the very least, annoyed.

Because nobody likes a joke when they're dead serious.

The more important question is why all the hobgoblins in the third panel, except for the first three, are all apathetic about the departure of their Supreme Leader. :smalltongue:

Looks like they were audience plants. All the rest of the crowd were just anxious to get done with the speeches and get to the barbecue.

He says it was a blessing from the dark one and then Jirix says it was ressurection.

I figure it was just because it reminded Redcloak that Xykon allowed him to rez Jirix--actually, ordered him to--but wouldn't let him regenerate his own eye.

Accentuated by Jirix's wink, to boot.

A better question would be how does Jirix stretch his arms so far? His hand is on Redcloak's shoulder.

The answer is in another thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141065).

I suspect it's a combination of these. It may also be that he doesn't like his personal space being invaded (Jirix has a hand on his shoulder and Redcloack may be the type not to like physical contact)

Or he wanted to give the Dark One some no-intermediary-miracle attributes to rally faith between the hobbos.

Yeah, it would have been much better if he had said "I didn't mind the Raise (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0370.html), either."

Ok, ok, I'm sorry.

These two reasons for sure.
Jirix's comment was really untactful. (tho he may not have realized it)

Also, those who have read Start of Darkness can think of at least one situation where Redcloak was prevented from Resurrecting someone who was a LOT more important to him than Jirix is--prevented by Xykon, more or less, who all-but-ordered Jirix's raising. Making light of it probably rubs Redcloak the wrong way, therefore.

THe general was at the center of the explosion, in the courtyard. There probably aren't enough peices of him to put together for a ressurection

I guess the latest strip (#704) answered my question. Redcloak thought Jirix was treating the matter too lightly. He didn't like the "cornball" humor.

Well, that's because he's got a stick up his... well, anyway, let's just say he has some traits in common with the erstwhile Miko.

He has perhaps far more in common with Miko than he would care to admit.

One can always pretend that Redcloak regenerated his eye anyway, and the eyepatch is there solely to fool Xykon.

Or she would.

Interesting question, that - who is more offended by the accusation, and which one will kill me first?

Gosh, I hope so, but Xykon's a bit of a bastard, he might randomly pop up at all hours to make Redcloak flip up the eyepatch just cuz he's bored and hoping he can kill something.

Redcloak is very serious by nature and takes the subject matter of the Dark One very seriously. He is annoyed and a bit off-put by Jirix's jibes, but I don't think it is a big deal for Redcloak. I think Jirix is in the position of shouldering a lot of responsibility as a figure-head but at the same time he and RC know that RC is the brains and chief leader. So Jirix, I think, is playing the role of the charsimatic care-taker president who won't ever challenge Redcloak as the respected figurehead. If Jirix is craftier than he looks he could be laying the ground work for a possible socialist upheavel later on by 'making up' the story about the Dark One talking to him, granting himself symbolic power. If Redcloak seems to be going in the wrong direction and Xykon and the other power players are out of the picture, Jirix would be the next rightful leader.

Actually, I was thinking he is very similar to Roy in terms of humor. I suppose he is right between Roy and Miko. Oh, and Redcloak will kill you first. Miko is too slow, for all her crazy.
