For starters, you could try this excellent guide

http://www.trazoi.net/tutorials/inkscape/oots/

It's for Inkscape, not Illustrator, but the principle should be the same.

edit. Also, I found this in the stickied thread http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8742. It should have some tips for Illustrator as well.

I think we all know that Sodipodi is the one and only true option for making avatars.

I started out with pens. Then regular mspaint. Then very eventually, inkscape, but only because I'm cheap. Illustrator is way better.

Inkscape is decent, but Illustrator is the way to go!

Inkscape rocks. But then again, my only other attempts to make an avatar were in MS paint.

Inkscape is very good.
Easy and fun to use.
However it is prone to crashing if theirs to many items in the file.
It also lacks fancy [see subsection lazy] features.

I use PowerPoint. Don't be so quick to judge, I find it actually works better than Inkscape.

No offence, but while you may think it works better, it looks much worse, and actually doesn't work better.

Meh, "to each his own" I guess.

I myself use Inkscape, but that might be because I don't have to money to get Illustrator. I don't know.

I use Paint.NET

My advice on learning how to draw OotS? I'm gonna hate myself for saying it, because its the answer my father always gives me and I hate it, but Practise.

Don't try any snippy comebacks. They won't work, I've tried them.

People might think I'm a bit silly for saying this, but I actually suggest you start with Paint and Irfanview. Chances are that you know how Paint works, but Inkscape's nodes and stuff are a bit complicated. They were for me. I started out with Paint, and once I got down the technical side of how an OotS avatar is constructed, after much nagging from a few members, I switched to Inkscape. So what that the majority of my Paintatars sucked? It was good practice.

EDIT: Plus you get the super bonus of making the switch and thinking "oh my, I can actually edit curves more than once this is so much easier".

I own both inkscape and illustrator. I like inkscape, but it crashes often. Learn to save every time you do something, during the making if it's that detailed. I can't figure out illustrators layers and I accidentaly exited out of some windows that had cool features, wich I can't find.

The latest version has timed auto-save, so that's not a problem anymore.

Inkscape sucks:smalltongue:, illustrator pwns:smallcool:.

I guess if you want to spend 600 dollars for three extra features and fewer bugs.

someone must have forgotten to tell that to my InkScape.

If I recall correctly, auto-save is off by default (for some reason).
I have inkscape version 0.47 and the timed auto-save is under inkscape preferences under "save"
