View Full Version : Blade of Celerity [3.5 PrC] (PEACH)

Most fighters like to wade into combat in heavy armor shrugging off blow after blow. Others stay back firing from afar or sneaking around in the shadows. Surely there was a way to stay nimble at close range with the cutting power of a sword, but while still holding the monster's attention.

Blades of Celerity, rather than depending on heavy armor or keeping their distance, rush into battle, hoping to overwhelm the opponent with their speed and agility. Although they move around a lot, their net movement is relatively low, as most of the movement is used to circle and confuse their opponents.

Class Features:

A Blade of Celerity may not use any of their class features in medium or heavy armor, or if they are carrying a medium or heavy load.

Spring Attack(Ex): A Blade of Celerity receives Spring Attack as a bonus even if he does not meet the requirements.

Dodging(Ex): A Blade of Celerity moves so swiftly that they are able to dodge blows more easily and turn sure hits into near misses. At level 1, a Blade of Celerity receives a +1 Dodge bonus to his AC as long as he moves at least 5ft that round. At level 3 and every two levels after that, the bonus increases by 1.

Quick Steps(Ex): As a Blade of Celerity becomes more experienced, they learn how to use a combination of quick steps and strides to increase their overall speed. A Blade of Celerity adds +5ft bonus to their base land speed. At level 2 and every even level after that, the bonus increases by +5ft.

Concealing Steps(Ex): A Blade of Celerity can use a series of short shuffles and quick steps to conceal their movements. Beginning at 2nd level, a Blade of Celerity gains concealment if he moves atleast 5ft from his original space, but not more than 30ft away. At level 9, this increases to total concealment.

Eye of the Storm(Ex): The increased speed has heightened a Blade of Celerity's mind to near superhuman levels. A 3rd level Blade of Celerity may add their Int bonus (if any) to their AC and Reflex saves. Beginning at level 7, if his Dodging class feature has a higher bonus than the opponents dodge bonus, then he ignores their dodge bonus to AC.

Weak Point(Ex): By moving quickly and carefully watching for flaws in the opponents defenses, an experienced Blade of Celerity can exploit those gaps and widen them. Beginning at 4th level, a Blade of Celerity can reduce the Shield, Armor, or Natural Armor by 1 with every successful attack he makes (to a minimum of 0), as long as he moved atleast 10ft that round. AC is lost first from Shield, then Armor, then Natural Armor. An opponent may spend a full round action to shift their defenses to regain up to 2 lost points of AC.

Mirror Images(Ex): By now, a Blade of Celerity Moves so fast that he creates several afterimages when he moves. At 5th level, as a full-round action, a Blade of Celerity may move up to double his land speed and create a number of mirror images (as the spell) up his class level in any space he moved through. They do not need to occupy the same space as you, but they must remain the same increments apart. They last as long as you spend a move action to move somewhere. The images copy your movements.

Scatter(Ex): A Blade of Celerity has such quick reflexes that he may react instantly to danger and quickly move out of the way. A 6th level Blade of Celerity may move up to his base land whenever he makes a successful Reflex save.

Ghostly Speed(Ex): At this point, a Blade of Celerity is so fast that he is no longer stopped by physical barriers. Beginning at 8th level, whenever a Blade of Celerity takes a double move, he is ethereal (as the spell Etherealness) until the end of his move. However, he may not leave the ground (water's fine).

Dancing Blade Storm Assault(Ex): A true master Blade of Celerity is a force to be reckoned with, a whirlwind of blows one moment and a cut to the hamstring the next. No flaw can be hidden under his watchful gaze. At 10th level, a Blade of Celerity may enter a state of total speed and focus, causing the world to slow down around him. As a swift action, a Blade of Celerity may begin his Dancing Blade Storm Assault. During this, he may take 10 on Jump Checks and doesn't incur AoOs for moving within an opponent's threatened area. He may create mirror images as a free action if he runs a circle around the opponent during the initiation of Dancing Blade Storm Assault. Once per round as a free action, a mirror image may make a single attack. If it succeeds, the attack deals no damage, but the opponent is flat-footed for one round. A successful attack dispels one mirror image. The Blade of Celerity must keep circling the opponent to keep the images up. Everytime he circles the enemy, one mirror image reforms. Once per round, as a free action, even during the opponent's turn, he may instantly switch places with one of his mirror images. He may maintain the assault for up to 10 rounds a day.

So there it is. Does it look too overpowered or too hard for martial characters to qualify for? Is it too top-loaded? Or is the capstone too powerful?

Edit: Weakened Dancing Blade Storm Assault, weakened mirror image switching and moved it to be part of the capstone.

Spring Attack(Ex): A Blade of Celerity receives Spring Attack as a bonus even if he does not meet the requirements.

Reasonable.

Reasonable.

Reasonable.

Since you get faster as you go along, the range could increase. 50% miss chance is very, very nice.

Untyped int bonus to things and the ability to ignore opponents dodge bonuses to AC, both very nice.

Complicated and probably won't have a huge effect on the game because anybody hit enough for the AC change to matter should probably be dead.

As a free action, even during an opponent's turn, he may instantly switch places with a mirror image within his base land speed.

HOLY OVERPOWERED WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN BATMAN! Ok, I got that out of my system. This is insane. You get a ton of mirror images (possibly more than the spell) over a huge area, and you can shift with your mirror image to avoid attacks, as a free action, out of turn. Mirror images is one of the best wizard defensive spells and you manage to add huge benefits to that. You already have 50% concealment, now enemies need to hit 10 different you's first to hit you... each round.

Scatter(Ex): A Blade of Celerity has such quick reflexes that he may react instantly to danger and quickly move out of the way. A 6th level Blade of Celerity may move up to his base land whenever he makes a successful Reflex save.

Fair enough, though with his base speed as high as it is this provides even more mobility.

Noclip. At least it's not noclip combined with the mirror image, and you can't attack afterwards without some specific items.

[QUOTE]Dancing Blade Storm Assault(Ex): A true master Blade of Celerity is a force to be reckoned with, a whirlwind of blows one moment and a cut to the hamstring the next. No flaw can be hidden under his watchful gaze. At 10th level, a Blade of Celerity may enter a state of total speed and focus, causing the world to slow down around him. As a swift action, a Blade of Celerity may begin his Dancing Blade Storm Assault. During this, he may take 10 on Jump Checks and does incur AoO for moving within an opponent's threatened area. He may create mirror images as a free if he runs a circle around the opponent. These mirror images copy the Blade of Celerity and each attack is real. Any non-purely mental action the opponent takes while surrounded by the mirror images provokes an attack of opportunity from each of them. The Blade of Celerity must keep circling the opponent to keep the images up. He may maintain the assault for up to 10 rounds a day. The images may only take one AoO each per round. During the Assault, you and your images gain the benefit of the Stand Still feat.

Ok. I'm assuming that "does" is actually doesn't. I'm assuming that, since you didn't specify, you get as many mirror images as your class feature would give you, 10. You can switch with them as a free action and probably run a circle around two people with a double move. That's 20 of you with their own attack routines and taking AoOs for doing anything, and if you are *ever* at risk you can switch with one of the duplicates.

This needs to be entirely rewritten. The class wasn't bad before that, besides the "I can dodge pretty much anything as an out of turn free action" but... 20x full attack routines? That's nuts.

Also, this should probably have evasion, because, well, it makes sense.

Wow. The capstone is ridiculous. Ten freaking mirror images that get an attack of opportunity just because the opponent made an action? If your class doesn't end in combat in one turn with that capstone the player is doing something wrong. Other than the capstone the only thing that needs to be fixed is the free action to auto dodge an attack. At least make it an immediate action.

Actually it's only 10 (mirror images are still limited to a max of class level) spring attacks as he has to keep circling the opponent (about 8 squares for a medium creature) and can't make a full attack (barring Belt of Battle), but you're right. Also, unless he's using a spiked chain or reach weapon, only 8 can attack at a time.

How about limiting the mirrors to only 1 attack each per round. So they can choose to either them only for AoOs or only for spring attacks.

Also forgot to add "Dancing Blade Storm Assault cannot be used with two-handed weapons." Would this be too much of a nerf or sorely needed.

Also, this should probably have evasion, because, well, it makes sense.

Sure, but I have to decide where to put it first

10 attacks is still absurd. Seriously, remove the capstone entirely. Rework it. Something.

Changing the amount of mirror images you can make per day is pointless. The problem is with the "I can immediately dodge any attack as a free action" part. Making it so he can only get to dodge 10 attacks 5 times per day won't make it less broken.

I'm not sure I want to remove it entirely, but perhaps a change would be better, such as:

Dancing Blade Storm Assault(Ex): A true master Blade of Celerity is a force to be reckoned with, a whirlwind of blows one moment and a cut to the hamstring the next. No flaw can be hidden under his watchful gaze. At 10th level, a Blade of Celerity may enter a state of total speed and focus, causing the world to slow down around him. Right changing mirror image dodging to an immediate action then.

My mistake, didn't word it correctly. I meant to write that only one mirror image can attack a round. So the max attacks per round is 1 from Mirror Image, and 1-3 from the Blade of Celerity depending on whether he took the feats from PH2 or not.

Still seems a bit overpowered. If I understand this, you can't create more than 1 mirror image a round yes? If that's the case this might be ok. It might also make sense to give a penalty to the mirrors' attack rolls.

Equal to the number of images created maybe?

Equal to the number of images created maybe?

Does it need to be that high? I mean, you aren't going to get 10 images unless you spend 10 rounds doing this, right? How often does combat last that long?

Actually, I didn't read through it well enough. The way it's written now, he can make up to 10 by circling the enemy. Which is ridiculous.

The new version makes it so you create up to 10 images when you first use the ability. Then each following round, you can regain a number of images equal to the number of times you can circle the enemy.

Ex: BoC vs Medium monster

Round 1: Starts DBSA and circles the enemy (8 squares) = 8 images
1 image hits with flatfoot attack... success! it disappears = 7 images
Monster full attacks with BAB 16 = 4 all hit = 3 images
Round 2: BoC circles once = +1 image = 4 images and Drinks pot of Expeditious Retreat = Speed = 90ft now. AoO pops 1 image = 3 images
Round 3: BoC circles twice = +2 images and uses another move to circle twice again = +2 more = 7 now...
and so on...

Yeah that's right (although if he's quick enough, he can make more), I've edited my post above to show an example.

Note that the images attacks don't inflict damage; they only cause the opponent to be flat-footed.

That... needs to be specified. It's much more balanced if they just make him flat footed, but there is no reason to read it that way.

Hmm. I'd put Mirror Images as the capstone, maybe with pounce or something.

Edited it:

The Dancing Blade Storm Assault images now can only make attack 1/round total. It doesn't deal damage, but renders the opponent flat-footed for 1 round.

Switching with a mirror image is still a free action, even during the opponent's turn, but now limited to 1/round and moved up to level 10 as part of Dancing Blade Storm Assault.
