note: i'm not really going to make an OOC. anything you need, you can post it at the bottom of your IC post. To make it even more visible to me. Please use red. Red catches my eye color, so sorry no red speech. Also try to stay away from bolded since i'll most likely be using that.

Let us begin!

You all are enjoying your dinner. The king invited half of the town to celebrate his birthday and it seemed you got an invitation out of the blue. Not that you mind. Free food and entertainment for a night! Better yet it was free! Not wanting to insult the king, you went, and certainly, you are enjoying your time here. But as the night goes on, it seems that other people have different ideas of entertainment in mind.

Wanting a break, you go out into hall to get a breath of fresh air. You wander about the palace when you hear screams nearby.

MURDER!!!! MURDER!!!!! Rushing into action, you burst down the door to the King's room from where the screams came from. A maid flees out into hallway, her screaming continuing. You enter the room and see the King lying on the floor dead, a wound in his back. Some sort of string lies in the corner and the window is open.

Thus the group of five begins their adventure to figure out Who Killed the King.

What you can do: anything. You must actively make search, spot, listen checks or any other check you deem you want too. If you don't, then at the very end ill proabably secretly roll to see if you notice things you might not have noticed otherwise. Detect Good and Evil do not exist for this campaign. Good luck! :smallamused: Will you find the killer in time? Or will you fall victim to him/her one by one? Only time will tell. Skills such as diplomacy, bluff and sense motive will get a certain bonus (positive or negative) depending on how well known the character is with the palace, or if he she is the killer or any other circumstance bonus i might think of.

I make a perception check [roll0] to search the room for anyone hiding.

Thunderous footsteps approaching quickly herald the arrival of a young man, part of the King's entourage, known as Caron La'crotha. His eyes go wide at the sight of the dead king and he stifles an inwardly curse. He rushes over to the window on the off-chance he might still catch a glimpse of the killer if that had been his or her escape route, and then focuses his attention on the rest of the room.

Freshmeat:

As you look out the window, you see a humaniod figure running into the woods to the West. It's too far away and too dark to tell any more then that. It is currently snowing outside and there are some tracks in the snow but they might be covered up soon. Who knows how long.

Caron frowns as he looks outside the window, turns around with a slight grumble and motions to two guards who have just arrived what with all the ruckus.
"The King's been murdered." he says, pausing for a moment to let the grave news sink in, while being visibly agitated himself.
"Inform the Captain of the Guard and make sure no one in this room touches anything. Send a handful of your most trusted men to meet me at the base of this tower*. There's a trail of footsteps in the snow down below and I believe I saw someone running into the woods just now. At this hour... it might just be our murderer."

* ((I'm assuming that we are, in fact, in a tower))

With that, Caron runs off to his quarters, located in the same wing of the castle. He returns shortly afterwards with a grappling hook in his hands, which he attaches to the window to climb down.

"If any of you people want to join me," he says, addressing everyone else still in the room. "consider yourself invited."

V for Victory looks out the window and sees the figure runing into the woods. The shot falls well short, even at this elevated height.

By the time Cyan gets there, the figure is in the woods and out of sight. Mark offers his cryptic and sardonic answers as he checks out the string on the floor.

He doesn't know what it could be though. And doesnt find anything odd about it.

I attempted to give your King any medical aid I could attempt, but he was dead before I had a chance. I have not disturbed the scene of the crime in any other way."
"As to the identity of the assassin, you only have my word that it is not I. I freely admit that negotiations have not gone well, but any adviser will tell you these things take time and it will take longer with a dead king. You may consider that a motive for assassination, but for the trouble, I would not agree. These two," continues Cyan while pointing at Caron and then Jon, "claim to have seen a figure from the window fleeing, but I cannot not collaborate that story nor believe it proves anyone's innocence. I cannot recall who was in the room before I got here as my focus was on your King, however I give you my word that I was not the first and no one has left this room since I entered."

((Which way is the King's body oriented in relation to the window? I assume since you mentioned a wound in his back that he's lying on his stomach? Also, you mentioned string in the opening description. How thick was this string and would my character recognize it as a bowstring?

Also, congrats NPC Revolution on a successful forum roll regardless if it beats the DC or not.))

"I'll keep this short since Cyan covered most of the facts, but there is one very important thing he left out: one of the maids actually seems to have found the body first, as it were her screams that alerted everyone nearby."

Deathslayer7
2010-02-19, 12:52 PM
Those that work under the King/been here a while will know that this is the Captain of the King's Guard. He's the second highest ranking officer (there is a General) but most of the time the General is out of town doing some sort of military operation, so guarding the King has been left mainly in Captain Tucker.

also this is a bad picture but consider straight up north in this post. Then consider the window to the West (<----) and the King's body lays North to South (with the head being at the South). At the North is also his chair from which it looks like he toppled out of, about 3-4 feet away from it.

As to whether you recognize the string, we'll see. You have yet to examine it. :smallamused:

Note - Please put your character's name at the top of your post, so I know who is who without having to go look it up. Thanks.

The Captain raises his hand to forestall any more arguments from Johnathon. Right now we need to calm down and take this by the book. You five are the most suspicious seeing you were here before us? How did you get here faster then my guards? And we are currently searching for the maid right now. he says, smoothly answering your guys' questions and expects answers in return.

Mark:
"look Cap'n, I was standing out in the hall when I heard the maid scream. I thought maybe his highness might be having one of his "special friends" over again. But then I saw all these people rushing into the room so I decided to check it out. I found these jokers."

He points at Jon, Galen, Cyan and Caron.

"And that's all I know about the subject, may I go?"

Freshmeat
2010-02-19, 04:50 PM
"Very well. I understand that the circumstances make us the most obvious suspects, although I'd like to add that the maid is perhaps the most suspicious of all, being the only one who wasn't just simply present at the crime scene before the guards arrived, but was present at the crime scene before any of us arrived, and actually left the crime scene to boot."

"With that being said, I was in the library in the West wing when I heard the cries that someone was murdered. I followed the direction of the sound, through the corridor that leads up to the hall just outside this room and ended up here. I didn't see any of the guards until these two men arrived."

Since I figured I'll be doing the following at one point or another anyway:

Knowledge (local) to get some basic information about my fellow suspects (namely, what is their function, do they live in the castle or were they just passing though -- basic things like that).
Take 10 for 11.

Hm, what should I roll to determine what I saw/remember from the maid? I assume I at least got a brief look at her (or I wouldn't know it was a maid). I'm not so much concerned with the look as is, but rather if there's anything I recall that might hint at foul play. That is to say, if I remember there being something 'off' about the maid's appearance that might hint at an illusion. Or, for that matter, a disguise.

I'd do the same for the Wood Man, but I'm guessing I'd get a -30 modifier because of the distance or something. :smalltongue:

"I was resting in one of the alcoves in the hallway when I heard a yell and came to investigate. Knowing what happens in this country among the court is part of being a diplomat. I do not know how I managed to arrive before any of the guards, but that is a question for your guards. I came upon the body of the king already slain. The wound in the back would suggest assassination. The manner of assassination, based on the wound in the back, the absence of a weapon, and the string on the floor would suggest a trap of some sort. If this is indeed the case, then we are no more likely to be guilty than anyone else."

Do we know Mark put the piece of string in his pocket? Failing that, are we aware that the piece of string we saw earlier when we came in is now gone? Because I doubt Caron would be okay with someone withholding evidence for as-of-yet inscrutable reasons.

((OOC: A battle grid or something might be handy, yes.))

Caron looks oddly at some of the hidden figures in the bush for a moment and recognizes the potential threat as he sees them reaching for what appear to be weapons. Whoever they were, they probably were up to no good, setting up this sort of ambush far removed from prying eyes.

While shouting a warning cry to his comrades, Caron draws his sword and immediately rushes forward, plowing through the snow, intending to stop them before they can take anyone by surprise.

Jon you have the option of attacking B1 or B2. I hope you can understand where you are at.

Z= Gaurds
B= Bandits
C=Colonel
Cy=Cyan
Ca=Caron
G= Galen
J=Jon
M=Mark

edit: there's a 1 on top of the J so its kind of hard to read. Sorry. I'll get rid of it when i do the next update.

Deathslayer7

Caron charges the nearest bandit and swings at him, but the snow slows his movement for the bandit to dodge the blade. Jon isn't as nice. Two arrows pelt straight into the bandit staggering him but not dropping him. He looks wounded though., badly.

As the commotion goes on up front, more commotion goes on in the back. From the side tracks appear in the snow but no people. There's crys of pain as guards are stabbed in sensitive areas and cough up blood. Two bandits appear out of thin air a moment later. Another bandit (B3) moves behind Cyan to help flank him and tries to go for a kidney but the snow also doesnt work in his favor.

The guard that got stabbed in the gut retaliates with a weak strike that hits but doesn't have much power into it. It's at this point that the Colonel shouts Ambush!

It is Goon's turn now.

and to keep things flowing, you may all post your actions so we're not waiting for everyone.

Galen and his animal companion charge the bandit and ironically the bandit is afraid of the monkey more. And with good reason as it lands a solid punch on the bandit.

The bandit fights back against caron and scores a solid hit on his arm leaving a wound (D:5). Another bandit appears out of thin air after stabbing a guard in the back and a cry of pain. The two guards retaliate one completely missing but the other hits.

Cyan attacks the leader of the group and successfully gets two kicks in with his horse before swinging and clipping him with his rapier as well.

A bolt whizzing past Jon's ear alerts him to a bandit in the trees above with a crossbow.

Mark's spell causes the bandit to **** his head to the side in slight pain. Two other guards retaliate against the bandits scoring hits on them as well. The leader tries to attack Cyan but fails miserably. Mark is not as lucky as a bolt strikes him in the back (D:17).

The last guard attempts to hit a bandit but it is deflected by his armor.

End of Round 1.
